Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Morphology Control by Design.

ABSTRACT: Exerting morphological control over metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical for determining their catalytic performance and to optimize their packing behavior in areas from separations to fuel gas storage. A mechanism-based approach to tailor the morphology of MOFs is introduced and experimentally demonstrated for five cubic Zn₄ O-based MOFs. This methodology provides three key features: 1) computational screening for selection of appropriate additives to change crystal morphology based on knowledge of the crystal structure alone; 2) use of additive to metal cluster geometric relationships to achieve morphologies expressing desired crystallographic facets; 3) potential for suppression of interpenetration for certain phases.

Expanding the Design Space of Polymer-Metal Organic Framework (MOF) Gels by Understanding Polymer-MOF Interactions.

Project description:The fabrication of polymer-MOF composite gels holds great potential to provide emergent properties for drug delivery, environmental remediation, and catalysis. To leverage the full potential of these composites, we investigated how the presence and chemistry of polymers impact MOF formation within the composites and, in turn, how MOFs impact polymer gelation. We show that polymers with a high density of strongly metal-binding carboxylic acids inhibit MOF formation; however, reducing the density of carboxylic acids or substituting them with weaker metal-binding hydroxyl groups permits both MOF formation and gelation within composites. Preparing composites with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which does not bind MOF zirconium (Zr)-oxo clusters, and observing gelation suggests that MOFs can entrap polymer chains to create cross-links in addition to cross-linking them through polymer-Zr-oxo interactions. Both simulations and experiments show composite hydrogels formed with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to be more stable than those made with PEG, which can reptate through MOF pores upon heating. We demonstrate the generalizability of this composite formation process across different Zr-based MOFs (UiO-66, NU-901, UiO-67, and MOF-525) and by spin-coating gels into conformable films. PVA-UiO-66 composite hydrogels demonstrated high sorption and sustained release of methylene blue relative to the polymer alone (3× loading, 28× slower release), and PVA-MOF-525 composite hydrogels capably sorb the therapeutic peptide Angiotensin 1-7. By understanding the influence of polymer-MOF interactions on the structure and properties of composite gels, this work informs and expands the design space of this emerging class of materials.

Anisotropic MOF-on-MOF Growth of Isostructural Multilayer Metal-Organic Framework Heterostructures.

Project description:Isostructural MOFs with similar crystallographic parameter are easily available for MOF-on-MOF growth and possible to form core-shell structure by isotropic growth. However, due to well-matched cell lattice, selective growth in isostructural MOF heterostructures remains a great challenge for engineering atypical MOF heterostructures. Herein, an anisotropic MOF-on-MOF growth strategy was developed to structure a range of multilayer sandwich-like ZIF-L heterostructures via stacking isostructural ZIF-L-Zn and ZIF-L-Co alternately with three-, five-, seven-, and more layer structures. Moreover, these heterostructures with highly designable feature were fantastic precursors for fabricating derivatives with tunable magnetic and catalytic properties. Such strategy explores a novel way of achieving anisotropic MOF-on-MOF growth between isostructural MOFs and opens up new horizons for regulating the properties by MOF modular assembly in versatile functional nanocomposites.

Synthesis of magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) for efficient removal of organic dyes from water.

Project description:A novel, simple and efficient strategy for fabricating a magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) as sorbent to remove organic compounds from simulated water samples is presented and tested for removal of methylene blue (MB) as an example. The novel adsorbents combine advantages of MOFs and magnetic nanoparticles and possess large capacity, low cost, rapid removal and easy separation of the solid phase, which makes it an excellent sorbent for treatment of wastewaters. The resulting magnetic MOFs composites (also known as MFCs) have large surface areas (79.52 m(2) g(-1)), excellent magnetic response (14.89 emu g(-1)), and large mesopore volume (0.09 cm(3) g(-1)), as well as good chemical inertness and mechanical stability. Adsorption was not drastically affected by pH, suggesting π-π stacking interaction and/or hydrophobic interactions between MB and MFCs. Kinetic parameters followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and adsorption was described by the Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption capacity was 84 mg MB g(-1) at an initial MB concentration of 30 mg L(-1), which increased to 245 mg g(-1) when the initial MB concentration was 300 mg L(-1). This capacity was much greater than most other adsorbents reported in the literature. In addition, MFC adsorbents possess excellent reusability, being effective after at least five consecutive cycles.

Uptake and Intracellular Fate of Fluorophore Labeled Metal-Organic-Framework (MOF) Nanoparticles.

Project description:The uptake and the fate of Zr-based metal-organic-framework nanoparticles labeled with organic fluorophores in HeLa cells has been monitored with fluorescence detection and elemental analysis. The nanoparticles have been selected as a model system of carrier nanoparticles (here Zr-based metal-organic-framework nanoparticles) with integrated cargo molecules (here organic fluorophores), with aze that does not allow for efficient exocytosis, a material which only partly degrades under acidic conditions as present in endosomes/lysosomes, and with limited colloidal stability. Data show that, for Zr-based metal-organic-framework nanoparticles of 40 nm size as investigated here, the number of nanoparticles per cells decreases faster due to particle redistribution upon proliferation than due to nanoparticle exocytosis and that, thus, also for this system, exocytosis is not an efficient pathway for clearance of the nanoparticles from the cells.

Peptide assembly-driven metal-organic framework (MOF) motors for micro electric generators.

Project description:Peptide-metal-organic framework (Pep-MOF) motors, whose motions are driven by anisotropic surface tension gradients created via peptide self-assembly around frameworks, can rotate microscopic rotors and magnets fast enough to generate an electric power of 0.1 μW. A new rigid Pep-MOF motor can be recycled by refilling the peptide fuel into the nanopores of the MOF.

Electric Field-Controlled Synthesis and Characterisation of Single Metal-Organic-Framework (MOF) Nanoparticles.

Project description:Achieving control over the size distribution of metal-organic-framework (MOF) nanoparticles is key to biomedical applications and seeding techniques. Electrochemical control over the nanoparticle synthesis of the MOF, HKUST-1, is achieved using a nanopipette injection method to locally mix Cu2+ salt precursor and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC3- ) ligand reagents, to form MOF nanocrystals, and collect and characterise them on a TEM grid. In situ analysis of the size and translocation frequency of HKUST-1 nanoparticles is demonstrated, using the nanopipette to detect resistive pulses as nanoparticles form. Complementary modelling of mass transport in the electric field, enables particle size to be estimated and explains the feasibility of particular reaction conditions, including inhibitory effects of excess BTC3- . These new methods should be applicable to a variety of MOFs, and scaling up synthesis possible via arrays of nanoscale reaction centres, for example using nanopore membranes.

Configurational Entropy Driven High-Pressure Behaviour of a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework (MOF).

Project description:Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show large structural flexibility as a function of temperature or (gas)pressure variation, a fascinating property of high technological and scientific relevance. The targeted design of flexible MOFs demands control over the macroscopic thermodynamics as determined by microscopic chemical interactions and remains an open challenge. Herein we apply high-pressure powder X-ray diffraction and molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the microscopic chemical factors that determine the high-pressure macroscopic thermodynamics of two flexible pillared-layer MOFs. For the first time we identify configurational entropy that originates from side-chain modifications of the linker as the key factor determining the thermodynamics in a flexible MOF. The study shows that configurational entropy is an important yet largely overlooked parameter, providing an intriguing perspective of how to chemically access the underlying free energy landscape in MOFs.

Unexpected reversal of reactivity in organic functionalities when immobilized together in a metal-organic framework (MOF).

Project description:A mixed-ligand metal-organic framework (MOF) material composed of both amine- and hydroxyl-bearing linkers, KSU-1, was reacted with a variety of isocyanates. The hydroxyl groups reacted to a greater extent than the amines, in conflict with the previously observed relative nucleophilicities of these functionalities in the same MOF. When immobilized individually in monofunctional MOFs, the amine-functionalized linker was more reactive than the hydroxyl linker, indicating that the reactivity reversal observed in KSU-1 is due to the groups' mutual confinement within the MOF.

Size control over metal-organic framework porous nanocrystals.

Project description:Porous nanocrystals of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer greater bioavailability, higher surface-to-volume ratios, superior control over MOF membrane fabrication, and enhanced guest-sorption kinetics compared to analogous bulk phases, but reliable synthesis of uniformly sized particles remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we identify the smallest and most probable sizes of known MOF nanocrystals and present an exhaustive comparative summary of nano- versus bulk-MOF syntheses. Based on critical analysis of reported size data and experimental conditions, an alternate to the LaMer model is proposed that describes nanocrystal formation as a kinetic competition between acid-base and metal-ligand reactivity. Particle growth terminates when ligands outcompete metal-ion diffusion, thereby arresting polymerization to produce kinetically trapped particle sizes. This model reconciles disparate trends in the literature and postulates that minimum particle sizes can be achieved by minimizing the relative ratios of metal-to-linker local concentrations. By identifying conditions that disfavor small nanocrystal sizes, this model also provides routes towards macroscopic MOF single crystals. A universal "seesaw" relationship between nanocrystal sizes and the concentrations of acidic surface-capping ligands provides a roadmap for achieving precise synthetic control. Best practices in synthesis, characterization, and data presentation are recommended for future investigations so that MOF nanocrystals may achieve their full potential as advanced nanomaterials.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) hybridized gold nanoparticles as a bifunctional nanozyme for glucose sensing.

Project description:Inspired by natural enzymes that possess multiple catalytic activities, here we develop a bifunctional metal-organic frame-work (MOF) for biosensing applications. Ultrasmall gold nano-particles (AuNPs) are grown in the internal cavities of an iron (Fe) porphyrin-based MOF to produce a hybridized nanozyme, AuNPs@PCN-224(Fe), in which AuNPs and PCN-224(Fe) exhibit the catalytic activity of glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), respectively. We established that the bifunctional nanozyme was capable of a cascade reaction to generate hydrogen peroxide in the presence of d-glucose and oxygen in situ, and subsequently activate a colorimetric or chemiluminescent substrate through HRP-mimicking catalytic activity. The nanozyme was selective over a range of other saccharides, and 93% of the catalytic activity was retained after being recycled five times.
