Temperature-dependent optical properties of some mixtures nematic liquid crystal.

ABSTRACT: The presence of optical anisotropy in liquid crystals (LCs) has caused these materials to have dual refractive indices: ordinary (n_o) and extra-ordinary (n_e). Many fundamental information about LCs can be found by looking at these refractive indices. In this work, the refractive indices of four mixtures nematic liquid crystal (NLC) have been studied as a function of temperature, and the relevant functions were then calculated. Subsequently, the order parameter of mentioned LCs was determined using three methods: Vuks, Haller, and the effective geometry parameter method. It was concluded that the obtained values are not significantly different and exhibit the same temperature dependence. The obtained results were evaluated in relation to the approach utilized.

Chiral nematic liquid crystal microlenses.

Project description:Nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) of achiral molecules and racemic mixtures of chiral ones form flat films and show uniform textures between circular polarizers when suspended in sub-millimeter size grids and immersed in water. On addition of chiral dopants to the liquid crystal, the films exhibit optical textures with concentric ring patterns and radial variation of the birefringence color. Both are related to a biconvex shape of the chiral liquid crystal film; the rings are due to interference. The curvature radii of the biconvex lens array are in the range of a few millimeters. This curvature leads to a radial variation of the optical axis along the plane of the film. Such a Pancharatnam-type phase lens dominates the imaging and explains the measured focal length of about one millimeter. To our knowledge, these are the first spontaneously formed Pancharatnam devices. The unwinding of the helical structure at the grid walls drives the lens shape. The relation between the lens curvature and material properties such as helical pitch, the twist elastic constant, and the interfacial tensions, is derived. This simple, novel method for spontaneously forming microlens arrays can also be used for various sensors.

Anomalous Lehmann Rotation of Achiral Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets Trapped under Linearly Polarized Optical Tweezers.

Project description:Continuous rotation of a cholesteric droplet under the heat gradient was observed by Lehmann in 1900. This phenomenon, the so-called Lehmann effect, consists of unidirectional rotation around the heat flux axis. We investigate this gradient heat effect using infrared laser optical tweezers. By applying single trap linearly polarized optical tweezers onto a radial achiral nematic liquid crystal droplet, trapping of the droplet was performed. However, under a linearly polarized optical trap, instead of stable trapping of the droplet with slightly deformed molecular directors along with a radial hedgehog defect, anomalous continuous rotation of the droplet was observed. Under low power laser trapping, the droplet appeared to rotate clockwise. By continuously increasing the laser power, a stable trap was observed, followed by reverse directional rotation in a higher intensity laser trap. Optical levitation of the droplet in the laser beam caused the heat gradient, and a breaking of the symmetry of the achiral nematic droplet. These two effects together led to the rotation of the droplet under linearly polarized laser trapping, with the sense of rotation depending on laser power.

Temperature-Dependent Optical Properties of Oxidized Graphenes.

Project description:In this study, we investigate how changing important synthesis-related parameters can affect and control the optical characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). These parameters include drying time and reduction time at two different temperatures. We obtain an understanding of their impact on optical transitions, optical bandgap, absorption coefficient, and absorbance spectrum width by analyzing these factors. Accordingly, GO has an optical bandgap of about 4 eV, which is decreased by the reduction process to 1.9 eV. Both GO and rGO display greater absorption in the visible spectrum, which improves photon capture and boosts efficiency in energy conversion applications. Additionally, our results show that GO and rGO have higher absorption coefficients than those previously reported for dispersions of exfoliated graphene. Defects in GO and rGO, as well as the presence of functional oxygen groups, are the main contributors to this increased absorption. Several measurements are carried out, including spectroscopic and morphological studies, to further support our findings.

Molecular heterogeneity drives reconfigurable nematic liquid crystal drops.

Project description:With few exceptions1-3, polydispersity or molecular heterogeneity in matter tends to impede self-assembly and state transformation. For example, shape transformations of liquid droplets with monodisperse ingredients have been reported in equilibrium4-7 and non-equilibrium studies8,9, and these transition phenomena were understood on the basis of homogeneous material responses. Here, by contrast, we study equilibrium suspensions of drops composed of polydisperse nematic liquid crystal oligomers (NLCOs). Surprisingly, molecular heterogeneity in the polydisperse drops promotes reversible shape transitions to a rich variety of non-spherical morphologies with unique internal structure. We find that variation of oligomer chain length distribution, temperature, and surfactant concentration alters the balance between NLCO elastic energy and interfacial energy, and drives formation of nematic structures that range from roughened spheres to 'flower' shapes to branched filamentous networks with controllable diameters. The branched structures with confined liquid crystal director fields can be produced reversibly over areas of at least one square centimetre and can be converted into liquid crystal elastomers by ultraviolet curing. Observations and modelling reveal that chain length polydispersity plays a crucial role in driving these morphogenic phenomena, via spatial segregation. This insight suggests new routes for encoding network structure and function in soft materials.

Controlling the Optical Properties of Transparent Auxetic Liquid Crystal Elastomers.

Project description:Determining the tunability of the optical coefficients, order parameter, and transition temperatures in optically transparent auxetic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) is vital for applications, including impact-resistant glass laminates. Here, we report measurements of the refractive indices, order parameters, and transition temperatures in a family of acrylate-based LCEs in which the mesogenic content varies from ∼50 to ∼85%. Modifications in the precursor mixture allow the order parameter, ⟨P2⟩, of the LCE to be adjusted from 0.46 to 0.73. The extraordinary refractive index changes most significantly with composition, from ∼1.66 to ∼1.69, in moving from a low to high mesogenic content. We demonstrate that all LCE refractive indices decrease with increasing temperature, with temperature coefficients of ∼10-4 K-1, comparable to optical plastics. In these LCEs, the average refractive index and the refractive index anisotropy are tunable via both chemical composition and order parameter control; we report design rules for both.

Designing Biological Microsensors with Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets.

Project description:Biosensing using liquid crystals has a tremendous potential by coupling the high degree of sensitivity of their alignment to their surroundings with clear optical feedback. Many existing set-ups use birefringence of nematic liquid crystals, which severely limits straightforward and frugal implementation into a sensing platform due to the sophisticated optical set-ups required. In this work, we instead utilize chiral nematic liquid crystal microdroplets, which show strongly reflected structural color, as sensing platforms for surface active agents. We systematically quantify the optical response of closely related biological amphiphiles and find unique optical signatures for each species. We detect signatures across a wide range of concentrations (from micromolar to millimolar), with fast response times (from seconds to minutes). The striking optical response is a function of the adsorption of surfactants in a nonhomogeneous manner and the topology of the chiral nematic liquid crystal orientation at the interface requiring a scattering, multidomain structure. We show that the surface interactions, in particular, the surface packing density, to be a function of both headgroup and tail and thus unique to each surfactant species. We show lab-on-a-chip capability of our method by drying droplets in high-density two-dimensional arrays and simply hydrating the chip to detect dissolved analytes. Finally, we show proof-of-principle in vivo biosensing in the healthy as well as inflamed intestinal tracts of live zebrafish larvae, demonstrating CLC droplets show a clear optical response specifically when exposed to the gut environment rich in amphiphiles. Our unique approach shows clear potential in developing on-site detection platforms and detecting biological amphiphiles in living organisms.

Co-revolving topological defects in a nematic liquid crystal.

Project description:A patterned surface defect of strength m = +1 and its associated disclination lines can decompose into a pair of surface defects and disclination lines of strength m = +1/2. For a negative dielectric anisotropy liquid crystal subjected to an applied ac electric field E, these half-integer defects are observed to wobble azimuthally for E > than some threshold field and, for sufficiently large fields, to co-revolve antipodally around a central point approximately midway between the two defects. This behavior is elucidated experimentally as a function of applied field strength E and frequency ν, where the threshold field for full co-revolution scales as ν1/2. Concurrently, nematic electrohydrodynamic instabilities were investigated. A complete field vs. frequency "phase diagram" compellingly suggests that the induced fluctuations and eventual co-revolutions of the ordinarily static defects are coupled strongly to-and driven by-the presence of the hydrodynamic instability. The observed behaviour suggests a Lehmann-like mechanism that drives the co-revolution.

An Optically Isotropic Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal (OI-AFLC) Display Mode Operating over a Wide Temperature Range using Ternary Bent-Core Liquid Crystal Mixtures.

Project description:We report on the synthesis and characterization of bent-core liquid crystal (LC) compounds and the preparation of mixtures that provide an optically isotropic antiferroelectric (OI-AFLC) liquid crystal display mode over a very wide temperature interval and well below room temperature. From the collection of compounds synthesized during this study, we recognized that several ternary mixtures displayed a modulated SmCaPA phase down to below -40 °C and up to about 100 °C on both heating and cooling, as well as optical tilt angles in the transformed state of approximately 45° (optically isotropic state). The materials were fully characterized and their liquid crystal as well as electro-optical properties analyzed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, dielectric spectroscopy, and electro-optical tests.

Temperature-Dependent Thermoelastic Anisotropy of the Phenyl Pyrimidine Liquid Crystal.

Project description:Controlling thermoelastic anisotropy of liquid crystals (LCs) is important for achieving reliable structural stability and efficient heat dissipation, especially for high-performance LC devices. A solid understanding of the thermoelastic anisotropy and its relation with the LC molecular structure is, however, still missing. Here, we studied the direction-dependent mechanical and thermal properties of 5-n-octyl-2-(4-n-octyloxy-phenyl)-pyrimidine (PYP8O8) in a wide temperature range, covering five phases (i.e., crystalline, smectic C, smectic A, nematic, and liquid), by Brillouin light spectroscopy and temperature wave analysis, respectively. We found that the mechanical anisotropy is much smaller than the thermal anisotropy at LC phases; both anisotropies show strong phase dependence, with the biggest change occurring at the crystalline to LC phase transition; and the anisotropy of the phonon mean-free path correlates with the structural anisotropy of the rigid core of the LC molecule. The analysis of the temperature-dependent thermoelastic anisotropy of LCs yields insights into structure-based phonon engineering.

Molecular reorientation of a nematic liquid crystal by thermal expansion.

Project description:A unique feature of nematic liquid crystals is orientational order of molecules that can be controlled by electromagnetic fields, surface modifications and pressure gradients. Here we demonstrate a new effect in which the orientation of nematic liquid crystal molecules is altered by thermal expansion. Thermal expansion (or contraction) causes the nematic liquid crystal to flow; the flow imposes a realigning torque on the nematic liquid crystal molecules and the optic axis. The optical and mechanical responses activated by a simple temperature change can be used in sensing, photonics, microfluidic, optofluidic and lab-on-a-chip applications as they do not require externally imposed gradients of temperature, pressure, surface realignment, nor electromagnetic fields. The effect has important ramifications for the current search of the biaxial nematic phase as the optical features of thermally induced structural changes in the uniaxial nematic liquid crystal mimic the features expected of the biaxial nematic liquid crystal.
