Microwave Irradiation as a Powerful Tool for the Preparation of n-Type Benzotriazole Semiconductors with Applications in Organic Field-Effect Transistors.

ABSTRACT: In this work, as an equivocal proof of the potential of microwave irradiation in organic synthesis, a complex pyrazine-decorated benzotriazole derivative that is challenging to prepare under conventional conditions has been obtained upon microwave irradiation, thus efficiently improving the process and yields, dramatically decreasing the reaction times and resulting in an environmentally friendly synthetic procedure. In addition, this useful derivative could be applied in organic electronics, specifically in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), exhibiting the highest electron mobilities reported to date for benzotriazole discrete molecules, of around 10^-2 cm²V^-1s^-1.

Field-Effect Transistors Based on 2D Organic Semiconductors Developed by a Hybrid Deposition Method.

Project description:Solution-processed 2D organic semiconductors (OSCs) have drawn considerable attention because of their novel applications from flexible optoelectronics to biosensors. However, obtaining well-oriented sheets of 2D organic materials with low defect density still poses a challenge. Here, a highly crystallized 2,9-didecyldinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (C10-DNTT) monolayer crystal with large-area uniformity is obtained by an ultraslow shearing (USS) method and its growth pattern shows a kinetic Wulff's construction supported by theoretical calculations of surface energies. The resulting seamless and highly crystalline monolayers are then used as templates for thermally depositing another C10-DNTT ultrathin top-up film. The organic thin films deposited by this hybrid approach show an interesting coherence structure with a copied molecular orientation of the templating crystal. The organic field-effect transistors developed by these hybrid C10-DNTT films exhibit improved carrier mobility of 14.7 cm2 V-1 s-1 as compared with 7.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 achieved by pure thermal evaporation (100% improvement) and 2.8 cm2 V-1 s-1 achieved by solution sheared monolayer C10-DNTT. This work establishes a simple yet effective approach for fabricating high-performance and low-cost electronics on a large scale.

Dinaphthotetrathienoacenes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications in Organic Field-Effect Transistors.

Project description:The charge transport of crystalline organic semiconductors is limited by dynamic disorder that tends to localize charges. It is the main hurdle to overcome in order to significantly increase charge carrier mobility. An innovative design that combines a chemical structure based on sulfur-rich thienoacene with a solid-state herringbone (HB) packing is proposed and the synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and charge transport properties of two new thienoacenes bearing a central tetrathienyl core fused with two external naphthyl rings: naphtho[2,3-b]thieno-[2''',3''':4'',5'']thieno[2″,3″:4',5']thieno[3',2'-b]naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene (DN4T) and naphtho[1,2-b]thieno-[2''',3''':4'',5'']thieno[2'',3'':4',5']thieno[3',2'-b]naphtho[1,2-b]thiophene are presented. Both compounds crystallize with a HB pattern structure and present transfer integrals ranging from 33 to 99 meV (for the former) within the HB plane of charge transport. Molecular dynamics simulations point toward an efficient resilience of the transfer integrals to the intermolecular sliding motion commonly responsible for strong variations of the electronic coupling in the crystal. Best device performances are reached with DN4T with hole mobility up to μ = 2.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 in polycrystalline organic field effect transistors, showing the effectiveness of the electronic coupling enabled by the new aromatic core. These promising results pave the way to the design of high-performing materials based on this new thienoacene, notably through the introduction of alkyl side-chains.

Solution-Processed, Large-Area, Two-Dimensional Crystals of Organic Semiconductors for Field-Effect Transistors and Phototransistors.

Project description:Organic electronics with ?-conjugated organic semiconductors are promising candidates for the next electronics revolution. For the conductive channel, the large-area two-dimensional (2D) crystals of organic semiconductors (2DCOS) serve as useful scaffolds for modern organic electronics, benefiting not only from long-range order and low defect density nature but also from unique charge transport characteristic and photoelectrical properties. Meanwhile, the solution process with advantages of cost-effectiveness and room temperature compatibility is the foundation of high-throughput print electrical devices. Herein, we will give an insightful overview to witness the huge advances in 2DCOS over the past decade. First, the typical influencing factors and state-of-the-art assembly strategies of the solution-process for large-area 2DCOS over sub-millimeter even to wafer size are discussed accompanying rational evaluation. Then, the charge transport characteristics and contact resistance of 2DCOS-based transistors are explored. Following this, beyond single transistors, the p-n junction devices and planar integrated circuits based on 2DCOS are also emphasized. Furthermore, the burgeoning phototransistors (OPTs) based on crystals in the 2D limits are elaborated. Next, we emphasized the unique and enhanced photoelectrical properties based on a hybrid system with other 2D van der Waals solids. Finally, frontier insights and opportunities are proposed, promoting further research in this field.

Low-voltage, High-performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors Based on 2D Crystalline Molecular Semiconductors.

Project description:Two dimensional (2D) molecular crystals have attracted considerable attention because of their promising potential in electrical device applications, such as high-performance field-effect transistors (FETs). However, such devices demand high voltages, thereby considerably increasing power consumption. This study demonstrates the fabrication of organic FETs based on 2D crystalline films as semiconducting channels. The application of high-? oxide dielectrics allows the transistors run under a low operating voltage (-4?V). The devices exhibited a high electrical performance with a carrier mobility up to 9.8?cm2?V-1 s-1. Further results show that the AlOx layer is beneficial to the charge transport at the conducting channels of FETs. Thus, the device strategy presented in this work is favorable for 2D molecular crystal-based transistors that can operate under low voltages.

Organic Field-Effect Transistors as Flexible, Tissue-Equivalent Radiation Dosimeters in Medical Applications.

Project description:Radiation therapy is one of the most prevalent procedures for cancer treatment, but the risks of malignancies induced by peripheral beam in healthy tissues surrounding the target is high. Therefore, being able to accurately measure the exposure dose is a critical aspect of patient care. Here a radiation detector based on an organic field-effect transistor (RAD-OFET) is introduced, an in vivo dosimeter that can be placed directly on a patient's skin to validate in real time the dose being delivered and ensure that for nearby regions an acceptable level of low dose is being received. This device reduces the errors faced by current technologies in approximating the dose profile in a patient's body, is sensitive for doses relevant to radiation treatment procedures, and robust when incorporated into conformal large-area electronics. A model is proposed to describe the operation of RAD-OFETs, based on the interplay between charge photogeneration and trapping.

Centro-Apical Self-Organization of Organic Semiconductors in a Line-Printed Organic Semiconductor: Polymer Blend for One-Step Printing Fabrication of Organic Field-Effect Transistors.

Project description:Here we report the first demonstration for centro-apical self-organization of organic semiconductors in a line-printed organic semiconductor: polymer blend. Key feature of this work is that organic semiconductor molecules were vertically segregated on top of the polymer phase and simultaneously crystallized at the center of the printed line pattern after solvent evaporation without an additive process. The thickness and width of the centro-apically segregated organic semiconductor crystalline stripe in the printed blend pattern were controlled by varying the relative content of the organic semiconductors, printing speed, and solution concentrations. The centro-apical self-organization of organic semiconductor molecules in a printed polymer blend may be attributed to the combination of an energetically favorable vertical phase-separation and hydrodynamic fluids inside the droplet during solvent evaporation. Finally, a centro-apically phase-separated bilayer structure of organic semiconductor: polymer blend was successfully demonstrated as a facile method to form the semiconductor and dielectric layer for OFETs in one- step.

Thieno[3,2-<i>b</i>]pyrrole and Benzo[<i>c</i>][1,2,5]thiadiazole Donor-Acceptor Semiconductors for Organic Field-Effect Transistors.

Project description:Two p-type donor-acceptor (D-A) semiconducting small molecules were synthesized to investigate the effect of the backbone curvature on the organic field-effect transistor performance. The backbone curvature of the donor-acceptor small molecules was modified by changing the spacer group from bithiophene to thienothiophene. Bithiophene to thienothiophene spacer groups were placed between 4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole (donor) and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (acceptor) to generate TP-BT4T-TP and TP-BT2TT-TP donor-acceptor molecules. A good charge carrier mobility of 2.59 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 was measured for the curved molecule (TP-BT4T-TP), while the linear molecule analog (TP-BT2TT-TP) only gave a low mobility of 5.41 × 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1 after annealing at 120 °C in bottom-contact bottom-gate devices. Out-of-plane grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction analysis revealed more drastic thermally induced crystallinity for TP-BT4T-TP as compared to TP-BT2TT-TP, explaining the difference observed in the performance of devices fabricated from each molecule.

Solution-Processed Bilayer Dielectrics for Flexible Low-Voltage Organic Field-Effect Transistors in Pressure-Sensing Applications.

Project description:Flexible pressure sensors based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have emerged as promising candidates for electronic-skin applications. However, it remains a challenge to achieve low operating voltages of hysteresis-free flexible pressure sensors. Interface engineering of polymer dielectrics is a feasible strategy toward sensitive pressure sensors based on low-voltage OFETs. Here, a novel type of solution-processed bilayer dielectrics is developed by combining a thick polyelectrolyte layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA) with a thin poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layer. This bilayer dielectric can provide a vertical phase separation structure from hydrophilic interface to hydrophobic interface which adjoins well to organic semiconductors, leading to improved stability and remarkably reduced leakage currents. Consequently, OFETs using the PMMA/PAA dielectrics reveal greatly suppressed hysteresis and improved mobility compared to those with a pure PAA dielectric. Using the optimized PMMA/PAA dielectric, flexible OFET-based pressure sensors that show a record high sensitivity of 56.15 kPa-1 at a low operating voltage of -5 V, a fast response time of less than 20 ms, and good flexibility are further demonstrated. The salient features of high capacitance, good dielectric performance, and excellent reliability of the bilayer dielectrics promise a bright future of flexible sensors based on low-voltage OFETs for wearable electronic applications.

Balancing the film strain of organic semiconductors for ultrastable organic transistors with a five-year lifetime.

Project description:The instability of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) is one key obstacle to practical application and is closely related to the unstable aggregate state of organic semiconductors (OSCs). However, the underlying reason for this instability remains unclear, and no effective solution has been developed. Herein, we find that the intrinsic tensile and compressive strains that exist in OSC films are the key origins for aggregate state instability and device degradation. We further report a strain balance strategy to stabilize the aggregate state by regulating film thickness, which is based on the unique transition from tensile strain to compressive strain with increasing film thickness. Consequently, a strain-free and ultrastable OSC film is obtained by regulating the film thickness, with which an ultrastable OFET with a five-year lifetime is realized. This work provides a deeper understanding of and a solution to the instability of OFETs and sheds light on their industrialization.

Molecular doped, color-tunable, high-mobility, emissive, organic semiconductors for light-emitting transistors.

Project description:Developing high-mobility emissive organic semiconductors with tunable colors is crucial for organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), a pivotal component of integrated optoelectronic devices, but remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate a series of color-tunable, high-mobility, emissive, organic semiconductors via molecular doping with a high-mobility organic semiconductor, 2,6-diphenylanthracene, as the host. The well-matched molecular structures and sizes with efficient energy transfer between the host and guest enable the intrinsically high charge transport with tunable colors. High mobility with the highest value >2 cm2 V-1 s-1 and strong emission with photoluminescence quantum yield >15.8% are obtained for these molecular-doped organic semiconductors. Last, a large color gamut for constructed OLETs is up to 59% National Television System Committee standard, meanwhile with an extremely high current density approaching 326.4 kA cm-2, showing great potential for full-color smart display, organic electrically pumped lasers and other related logic circuitries.
