Project description:Among drugs, antibiotics have a significant place due to their wide consumption in veterinary and human medicine to prevent and treat microbial infections. In spite of low amounts of antibiotics in the aquatic environments, the repeated incidence of antibiotics has been caused bacterial persistence and adverse effects on health human and aquatic life. Current article evaluated the removal of metronidazole (MNZ) via heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process by nano-Fe3O4. The response surface methodology (RSM) on Box-Behnken design was applied for modeling and optimization experimental factors such as pH, applied current, and catalyst load. The efficiency of the EF process was maximum (92.26%) under the optimal condition for MNZ removal i.e. 70?mg/L of initial MNZ concentration, pH of 3, 200?mA applied current, 30?min time and 3.2?kWh/m3 of energy consumption.

Project description:A novel adsorbent (Fe3O4/HCO) was prepared via co-precipitation from a mix of ferriferrous oxide and a Ce-rich waste industrial sludge recovered from an optical polishing activity. The effect of system parameters including reaction time, pH, dose, temperature as well as initial concentration on the adsorption of Sb(III) were investigated by sequential batch tests. The Sb(III)/Fe3O4/HCO system quickly reached adsorption equilibrium within 2 h, was effective over a wide pH (3-7) and demonstrated excellent removal at a 60 mg/L Sb(III) concentration. Three isothermal adsorption models were assessed to describe the equilibrium data for Sb(III) with Fe3O4/HCO. Compared to the Freundlich and dubinin-radushkevich, the Langmuir isotherm model showed the best fit, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 22.853 mg/g, which exceeds many comparable absorbents. Four kinetic models, Pseudo-first-order, Pseudo-second-order, Elovich and Intra-particle, were used to fit the adsorption process. The analysis showed that the mechanism was pseudo-second-order and chemical adsorption played a dominant role in the adsorption of Sb(III) by Fe3O4/HCO (correlation coefficient R2 = 0.993). Thermodynamic calculations suggest that adsorption of Sb(III) ions was endothermic, spontaneous and a thermodynamically feasible process. The mechanism of the adsorption of Sb(III) on Fe3O4/HCO could be described by the synergistic adsorption of Sb (III) on Fe3O4, FeCe2O4 and hydrous ceric oxide. The Fe3O4/HCO sorbent appears to be an efficient and environment-friendly material for the removal of Sb(III) from wastewater.

Project description:Aqueous polysulfide/iodide redox flow batteries are attractive for scalable energy storage due to their high energy density and low cost. However, their energy efficiency and power density are usually limited by poor electrochemical kinetics of the redox reactions of polysulfide/iodide ions on graphite electrodes, which has become the main obstacle for their practical applications. Here, CoS2/CoS heterojunction nanoparticles with uneven charge distribution, which are synthesized in situ on graphite felt by a one-step solvothermal process, can significantly boost electrocatalytic activities of I-/I3- and S2-/Sx2- redox reactions by improving absorptivity of charged ions and promoting charge transfer. The polysulfide/iodide flow battery with the graphene felt-CoS2/CoS heterojunction can deliver a high energy efficiency of 84.5% at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, a power density of 86.2 mW cm-2 and a stable energy efficiency retention of 96% after approximately 1000 h of continuous operation.

Project description:Graphene nanoplates (GNPs) can be used as a platform for homogeneous distribution of adsorbent nanoparticles to improve electron exchange and ion transport for heavy-metal adsorption. In this study, we report a facile thermal decomposition route to fabricate a graphene-supported Fe-Mg oxide composite. The prepared composite was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the arsenic adsorption behavior of the GNP/Fe-Mg oxide composite. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich models were employed to describe the adsorption isotherm, in which the sorption kinetics of the arsenic adsorption process by the composite was found to be pseudo-second-order. Furthermore, the reusability and regeneration of the adsorbent were investigated by an assembled-column filter test. The GNP/Fe-Mg oxide composite exhibited significant fast adsorption of arsenic over a wide range of solution pHs, with exceptional durability and recyclability, which could make this composite a very promising candidate for effective removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions.

Project description:This article describes the sorption properties of cyclodextrin polymers (nanosponges; NS) with the pesticides 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA) and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (TCF), including an evaluation of its efficiency and a comparison with other materials, such as granulated activated carbon (GAC). NS-pesticide complexes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), UV⁻VIS, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This confirms the interactions of the guests with nanosponges and shows that the polymers have favorable sorption capacities for chlorinated aromatic guests. Our studies also show that the inclusion complex is predominantly favored for NS/CPA rather than those formed between TCF and NS due to the size of the adsorbate and steric effects. Sorption studies carried with repeated cycles demonstrate that NS polymers could be an improved technology for pollutant removal from aquatic environments, as they are very efficient and reusable materials. Our experiments and characterization by SEM, EDS, UV⁻VIS, and magnetization saturation (VSM) also show that NS is an optimal substrate for the deposition of magnetite nanoparticles, thus improving the usefulness and properties of the polymer, as the nanosponges could be retrieved from aqueous solution with a neodymium magnet without losing its efficiency as a pesticide sorbent.

Project description:Plastics contribute a magnificent role to modern civilization, but the waste becomes a huge burden to ecology and remains intact for a thousand years. Hence, the recent movement is shifted to biodegradable plastic. In this study, an attempt was made to introduce an added value to the environment where the bio-plasticized materials were used for phosphate removal. A G-plasticized magnetic starch-based Fe3O4 clay polymer nanocomposite (PNC) was synthesized to remove phosphate from the aqueous solution. It was synthesized from activated carbon (AC), coated iron oxide nanoparticles (CIONP), nanoclay (NC), and glycerol (G) as a plasticizer. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized with UV-Vis, SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The PNC and constituent (CIONP) were tested for phosphate removal through batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption capacity increases with increasing the adsorbent dose and decreases with an increase in phosphate concentration. The synthesized PNC effectively raised the constituent optimum phosphate ion adsorption pH from acidic (pH = 3) to slightly acidic (pH = 6). At the optimal pH, the CIONP and PNC maximum phosphate adsorption capacity (MPAC) was 3.12 and 2.31 mg P/g, respectively. In addition, the phosphate removal efficiency of PNC (45-95% at pH 6) was comparable to CIONP (58-97% at pH 3) under an initial 2-100 mg P/L. The adsorbents adsorption kinetics and isotherm study best described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model, in turn. The SEM images support the conclusion, in which the PNC shows a heterogenous porous surface. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms were mainly described by multilayer and chemical adsorption, such as electrostatic and ion exchange. It can be concluded that there is a positive synergistic effect between the biopolymer (starch) and nanomaterials that form the PNC. This study results propose the multiple added values of modified bio-plasticized material (with adsorbent) for environmental (phosphate) remediation.

Project description:The presence of synthetic dyes in water causes serious environmental issues owing to the low water quality, toxicity to environment and human carcinogenic effects. Adsorption has emerged as simple and environmental benign processes for wastewater treatment. This work reports the use of porous Fe-based composites as adsorbents for Acid Red 66 dye removal in an aqueous solution. The porous FeC and Fe/FeC solids were prepared by hydrothermal methods using iron sulfates and sucrose as precursors. The physicochemical properties of the solids were evaluated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy coupled with Energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared s (FTIR), Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopies, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and magnetic saturation techniques. Results indicated that the Fe species holds magnetic properties and formed well dispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles on a carbon layer in FeC nanocomposite. Adding iron to the previous solid resulted in the formation of ?-Fe2O3 coating on the FeC type structure as in Fe/FeC composite. The highest dye adsorption capacity was 15.5 mg·g-1 for FeC nanocomposite at 25 °C with the isotherms fitting well with the Langmuir model. The removal efficiency of 98.4% was obtained with a pristine Fe sample under similar experimental conditions.

Project description:Uranium carbide (UC) is a candidate fuel material for future Generation IV nuclear reactors. As part of a general safety assessment, it is important to understand how fuel materials behave in aqueous systems in the event of accidents or upon complete barrier failure in a geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. As irradiated nuclear fuel is radioactive, it is important to consider radiolysis of water as a process where strongly oxidizing species can be produced. These species may display high reactivity toward the fuel itself and thereby influence its integrity. The most important radiolytic oxidant under repository conditions has been shown to be H2O2. In this work, we have studied the dissolution of uranium upon exposure of UC powder to aqueous solutions containing HCO3 - and H2O2, separately and in combination. The experiments show that UC dissolves quite readily in aqueous solution containing 10 mM HCO3 - and that the presence of H2O2 increases the dissolution further. UC also dissolves in pure water after the addition of H2O2, but more slowly than in solutions containing both HCO3 - and H2O2. The experimental results are discussed in view of possible mechanisms.

Project description:Fe-modified biochars have been widely used in removal of Cr(VI) from water due to the resulting modified surface functional groups and magnetization property. However, few studies have synthetically investigated modification methods and synthesis parameters on the improvement of the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by Fe-modified biochars. Herein, 10 types of corn straw-based magnetic biochars were produced using pre-modification and post-modification methods with various modifier ratios, and the highest heating temperature (HHT). Cr(VI) removal results suggest that the removal efficiency of pre-modified biochars ranged from 50.7 to 98.6%, which was much higher than that of post-modified (6.6-21.6%) and unmodified biochars (0.4-7.6%). The effect of synthesis methods on Cr(VI) adsorption was in the following order: Fe-modification method > modifier ratio > HHT. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results of three types of pre-modified biochars were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 > 0.99) and the Langmuir adsorption model (R 2 > 0.99), respectively, indicating the surface homogeneity of the pre-modified biochars and unilayer chemisorptions of Cr(VI). Characterization results show that iron oxides or zerovalent iron particles were successfully deposited onto the surface of biochars and magnetism was introduced. A good Pearson correlation (r = -0.9694) between the removal efficiency and pH value in modified biochar suggests that the lower pH value may offer more positive charges and promote electrostatic attraction. Therefore, the dominant mechanism for enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption on pre-modified biochar was electrostatic attraction, resulting from its distinguished acidity nature. Our findings provide new insights into the high-efficiency removal of Cr(VI) onto Fe-modified magnetic biochars and will benefit future design of more efficient magnetic biochars.

Project description:Highly stable gold nanoparticles immobilized on the surface of amine-functionalized nanocomposite microspheres possessing a magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle core and a silica (SiO2) shell (Au/SiO2-shell/Fe3O4-core) were prepared. These gold nanocomposite catalysts were tested for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) reduction in aqueous solution in the temperature range 293-323 K and in the presence of aqueous NaBH4 reducing agent. The magnetically recyclable gold catalyst showed high stability (∼3 months), efficient recyclability (up to 10 cycles), and high activity (∼100% conversion within 225 s, ∼700 ppm 4-NP or 2-NA). The pseudo-first-order apparent reaction rate constants (k) of 4-NP and 2-NA reduction were 7.5 × 10-3 and 4.1 × 10-3 s-1, respectively, and with an apparent catalytic activity of 4.48 × 10-8 kmol/(m3 s).
