Project description:The present work reports on the synthesis and characterization of iridium (Ir)-based nanohybrids with variable chemical compositions. More specifically, highly stable polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanohybrids of the PVP-IrO2 and PVP-Ir/IrO2 types, as well as non-coated Ir/IrO2 nanoparticles, are synthesized using different synthetic protocols and characterized in terms of their chemical composition and morphology via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), respectively. Furthermore, their nonlinear optical (NLO) response and optical limiting (OL) efficiency are studied by means of the Z-scan technique, employing 4 ns laser pulses at 532 and 1064 nm. The results demonstrate that the PVP-Ir/IrO2 and Ir/IrO2 systems exhibit exceptional OL performance, while PVP-IrO2 presents very strong saturable absorption (SA) behavior, indicating that the present Ir-based nanohybrids could be strong competitors to other nanostructured materials for photonic and optoelectronic applications. In addition, the findings denote that the variation in the content of IrO2 nanoparticles by using different synthetic pathways significantly affects the NLO response of the studied Ir-based nanohybrids, suggesting that the choice of the appropriate synthetic method could lead to tailor-made NLO properties for specific applications in photonics and optoelectronics.

Project description:The knowledge of optical nonlinearity is pre-requisite for the utility of the nonlinear optical (NLO) materials for optoelectronic device fabrication. Z-scan experimental technique based on the principles of spatial beam distortion, has been successfully employed for years to precisely investigate the NLO parameters. In the field of optical nonlinearity, graphene has proven itself as a strong candidate material owing to the possibility of strong light-matter interactions. A detailed comparison of the NLO properties of graphene and its derivatives (G/GDs) is crucial to identify and accelerate their utility for future flexible optoelectronic device applications. Herein, we share the experimental records of the optical nonlinearity in G/GDs, obtained from the well established Z-scan technique from the available literature, reported in the period from 2009 to 2019 and were extracted from the provided raw data [1]. The data sheet includes material composition, characteristics of the excitation laser source (operating wavelength, laser energy/power/intensity) and the NLO parameters (nonlinear absorption (NLA), nonlinear refraction (NLR), saturation intensity, optical limiting threshold). For practical use, they are tabulated in the present paper and will enable users to search the material data and filter down the set of desired materials using given parameters for their possible optoelectronic device applications. The data is related to the research article entitled "Unraveling absorptive and refractive optical nonlinearities in CVD grown graphene layers transferred onto a foreign quartz substrate" (Agrawal et al., 2019) [2].

Project description:In this research, we investigated the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of multicomponent hybrid materials formed by meso-tetraphenylporphyrin P (both as free base and ZnII complex), carrying in 2 or 2,12 β-pyrrolic position an electron donor ferrocene (Fc), and/or an electron acceptor fullerene (C60) moiety, connected to the porphyrin core via an ethynyl or an ethynylphenyl spacer. We measured the NLO response by the electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH) technique in CH2Cl2 solution with a 1907 nm incident wavelength, recording for all the investigated compounds unexpected negative values of μβ1907. Since density functional theory (DFT) calculations evidenced for P-Fc dyads almost null ground state dipole moments and very low values for P-C60 dyads and Fc-P-C60 triads, our EFISH results suggested a significant contribution to γEFISH of the purely electronic cubic term γ(-2ω; ω, ω, 0), which prevails on the quadratic dipolar orientational one μβ(-2ω; ω, ω)/5kT, as confirmed by computational evidence.

Project description:The nonlinear optical (NLO) and antiviral properties of naphthalimide Schiff base compounds (5a-c) were experimentally and computationally investigated. The synthesized compounds (5a-c) were successfully characterized via UV-Vis, FTIR, 1H NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The calculated average third-order NLO polarizabilities (˂γ˃) of 5a, 5b, and 5c were found to be 5, 9, and 21 times greater than the ˂γ˃ amplitude of p-NA, respectively. The computed results revealed the potential of the synthesized compounds for NLO applications. Additionally, molecular docking studies of the synthesized compounds with two crucial SARS-CoV-2 proteins were performed to examine their biochemical properties. Compound 5c exhibited a higher binding affinity with the spike protein compared to that with Mᴾᴿᴼ. The results obtained herein indicate the potential of the synthesized naphthalimide derivatives for optoelectronic and drug design applications.

Project description:The idea of hierarchy, widely observed in natural and artificial worlds, has been extensively explored in chemistry and materials science. Similar to proteins which contain primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures, varying levels of hierarchy in metal-organic framework (MOF) superstructures can also be achieved. In this work, we initiate a systematic study on the morphological evolution of hierarchical superstructures with the assistance of seeded growth and explore the assembly of multiple modular MOFs into superstructures with enhanced hierarchy and diversity. By utilizing MOF-74-III spherulite superstructures as seeds, multiple quaternary architectures were obtained depending on the lengths of organic linker precursors. The resulting superstructures with superior hierarchy represent a unique porous material which contains multiple modules with diverse morphologies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that utilizes tertiary superstructures as seeds in MOF synthesis, which leads to unusual and diverse behaviors during secondary growth. This synthetic approach not only provides a facile method to establish hierarchy in porous materials, but also enables the fabrication of multiscale heterostructures through secondary growth on MOF seeds.

Project description:Organic materials have attracted considerable attention in nonlinear optical (NLO) applications as they have several advantages over inorganic materials, including high NLO response, and fast response time as well as low-cost and easy fabrication. Lithium-containing C60 (Li@C60) is promising for NLO over other organic materials because of its strong NLO response proven by theoretical and experimental studies. However, the low purity of Li@C60 has been a bottleneck for applications in the fields of solar cells, electronics and optics. In 2010, highly purified Li@C60 was finally obtained, encouraging further studies. In this study, we demonstrate a facile method to fabricate thin films of Li@C60 and their strong NLO potential for high harmonic generation by showing its comparatively strong emission of degenerate-six-wave mixing, a fifth-order NLO effect.

Project description:Using quantum chemical calculations and exciton dynamics simulations, we investigate the static second hyperpolarizability ? [the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) property at the molecular scale] of slip-stacked pentacene dimer models in the correlated-triplet-pair [1(TT)] state created from the singlet excited state in the singlet fission (SF) process. It is found that the SF induces significant (?20 times at maximum) enhancement of ?/monomer in the 1(TT) state as compared to that in the singlet ground state. The origin of the remarkable enhancement of ?/monomer is revealed by analyzing the ? density distribution and the intermolecular orbital interaction. Furthermore, we clarify molecular packings suitable for highly efficient SF and largely enhanced ? values of a novel class of SF-induced NLO systems, which have promising potential to surpass the conventional NLO systems.

Project description:A comprehensive theoretical study was carried out on a series of aryldimesityl borane (DMB) derivatives using Density Functional theory. Optimized geometries and electronic parameters like electron affinity, reorganization energy, frontiers molecular contours, polarizability and hyperpolarizability have been calculated by employing B3PW91/6-311++G (d, p) level of theory. Our results show that the Hammett function and geometrical parameters correlates well with the reorganization energies and hyperpolarizability for the series of DMB derivatives studied in this work. The orbital energy study reveals that the electron releasing substituents increase the LUMO energies and electron withdrawing substituents decrease the LUMO energies, reflecting the electron transport character of aryldimesityl borane derivatives. From frontier molecular orbitals diagram it is evident that mesityl rings act as the donor, while the phenylene and Boron atom appear as acceptors in these systems. The calculated hyperpolarizability of secondary amine derivative of DMB is 40 times higher than DMB (1). The electronic excitation contributions to the hyperpolarizability studied by using TDDFT calculation shows that hyperpolarizability correlates well with dipole moment in ground and excited state and excitation energy in terms of the two-level model. Thus the results of these calculations can be helpful in designing the DMB derivatives for efficient electron transport and nonlinear optical material by appropriate substitution with electron releasing or withdrawing substituents on phenyl ring of DMB system.

Project description:Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) compounds have attracted wide attention for their potential applications in optoelectronic materials and devices such as fluorescent sensors, dye-sensitized solar cells, organic light emitting diodes and nonlinear optics. In this work, we have synthesized a new ICT compound, dimethyl-[4-(7-nitro-benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)-phenyl]-amine (BTN), and have fabricated it into low dimensional micro/nano structures with well-defined morphologies. These self-assembled nanostructures exhibit high efficiency solid state fluorescence via an aggregation induced emission mechanism, which overcomes the defect of fluorescence quenching caused by aggregation in the solid state of traditional luminescent materials. We also explored and studied the nonlinear optical properties of this material through the Z-scan method, and found that this material exhibits large third-order nonlinear absorption and refraction coefficients, which promises applications of the materials in the fields of nonlinear optics and optoelectronics.

Project description:Chiral organic compounds are excellent second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their inherent non-symmetric electronic structures combined with the advantages of organic compounds. At present, density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful tool for predicting the properties of novel materials. In this paper, based on chiral lemniscular [16]cycloparaphenylene, three novel compounds are designed by introduction of donor/acceptor units and their combinations. The geometrical/electronic structure, electronic absorption, and the second-order NLO properties of these compounds have been systematically investigated by DFT/TDDFT theory. The simulated UV-Vis/CD spectra of compound 1 are in good agreement with the experimental ones, enabling us to assign their electronic transition characteristics and absolute configuration with high confidence. The investigations show that energy gaps, absorption wavelength and second-order NLO response may be effectively tuned by the introduction of the donor or acceptor units or their combinations. For instance, the second-order NLO value of compound 4 is about 207 times as large as the average second-order polarizability of the organic molecule urea. Thus, the studied compounds are expected to be potential large second-order NLO materials.
