Stock market response to COVID-19 pandemic: A comparative evidence from two emerging markets.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents the first comparative study of emerging stock markets' response to the COVID-19 pandemic with evidence from Ghana and Botswana. Using daily time-series data from March 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, the study estimates parametric, semi-parametric and non-parametric models, and provides evidence to support the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., the total number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths) on the stock market performances of Ghana and Botswana. Interestingly, the study shows that the impact of the pandemic on Ghana's stock market is quantitatively greater than the stock market of Botswana. The study calls for fiscal and monetary policies to help firms on the stock market to survive the shock. Going forward, measures aimed at building a robust stock market to withstand such external shocks are critical.

Project description:The paper investigates the co-movement of COVID-19 pandemic and performance of stock markets of four emerging economies. The Quantile-on-Quantile regression model was applied to daily share prices of stock markets from March 13, 2020 to November 30, 2021 in these economies. The results indicate varied relationships across various quantiles of COVID-19 cases and share prices. Whilst both positive and negative relationships are established at different quantiles of share prices for Brazil and Kenya, negative co-movements are recorded for India and South Africa for all quantiles of share prices. The varying dependence between COVID-19 and stock markets provide critical insights to policy makers.

Response of stock market volatility to COVID-19 announcements and stringency measures: A comparison of developed and emerging markets.

Project description:We investigate the relationship between the daily release of COVID-19 related announcements, defensive government interventions, and stock market volatility, drawing upon an extended time period of one year, to independently test, confirm and iteratively improve on previous research findings. We categorize stock markets into emerging and developed markets and consider differences and similarities utilizing an asymmetric measure of volatility. We find that there are major differences between these markets with respect to investors' interpretation of risk in response to daily new confirmed cases, death rates, recovery rates, and different defensive government interventions. We suggest explanations for these differences, in terms of national culture, and the quality of governance. Moreover, the development of Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine is of immense importance to both markets. The findings have implications for tailoring government responses to crises in country-specific contexts.

COVID-19 pandemic and stock market response: A culture effect.

Project description:National culture has been shown to impact the way investors, firm managers, and other financial market participants respond to crisis. To date, however, none has looked at the impact of culture on market responses to disasters. This paper is the first to address the effect of national culture on stock market responses to a global health disaster. We find larger declines and greater volatilities for stock markets in countries with lower individualism and higher uncertainty avoidance during the first three weeks after a country's first COVID-19 case announcement. Our results are robust after controlling for investor fear, cumulative infected cases, the stringency of government response policies, the level of democracy, political corruption, and the 2003 SARS experience, among others.

Impact persistence of stock market risks in commodity markets: Evidence from China.

Project description:The risk spillover among financial markets has been noticeably investigated in a burgeoning number of literature. Given those doctrines, we scrutinize the impact persistence of volatility spillover and illiquidity spillover of Chinese commodity markets in this paper. Based on the sample from 2010 to 2020, we reveal that there is a cross-market spillover of volatility and illiquidity in China and also, interactions between volatility and illiquidity in different financial markets are pronounced. More importantly, we demonstrate that different commodity markets have different responsiveness to stock market shocks, which embeds their market characteristics. Specifically, we discover that the majority of the traders in gold market might be hedger and therefore gold market is more sensitive to stock market illiquidity shock and thus the shock impact in persistent. On the other hand, agricultural markets like corn and soybean markets might be dominated by investors and thus those markets respond to the stock market volatility shocks and the shock impact in persistent over 10 periods given the first period of risk shock happening. In fact, different Chinese commodity markets' responsiveness towards Chinese stock market risk shocks indicates the stock market risk impact persistence in Chinese commodity markets. This result can help policymakers to understand the policy propagation effect according to this risk spillover channel and risk impact persistence mechanism in China.

COVID-19 pandemic effect on trading and returns: Evidence from the Chinese stock market.

Project description:Using a daily foreign and institution flows data, this paper studies how institutional and foreign investors respond to the COVID-19 pandemic events in China. The results indicate that during the COVID-19 crisis foreign investors play a market stabilization role showing significant negative feedback trading, whereas institution investors do not stabilize the market. And compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, foreign investors even exhibit stronger negative feedback trading. Further analyses confirm that foreign investors' negative feedback is mainly driven by their response to negative returns. Moreover, both institutional and foreign investors' trading show stronger forecastability of future returns during the pandemic period. And the negative returns after foreigners' selling and positive returns after institutional buying are much stronger during the crisis period.

Conventional monetary policy, COVID-19, and stock markets in emerging economies☆

Project description:We examine whether conventional monetary policy moderated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stock markets. Using daily historical data on emerging economies, we show that the pandemic has an adverse impact on stock markets by reducing stock returns. We then show that, in the presence of conventional monetary policy, the adverse impact does not disappear. We probe into the robustness of these findings by considering, among others, alternative COVID-19 indicators, fixed effects, cointegrating dynamics, stock market characteristics, and monetary policy frameworks, and find them to be robust. An implication is that conventional monetary policy alone may not be an effective tool during the pandemic and that policymakers should coordinate conventional monetary policy with other policies to restore stock markets to their pre-crisis level.

Volatility spillovers from the Chinese stock market to the U.S. stock market: The role of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, precipitated the stock market crash of March 2020. According to published global data, the U.S. has been most affected by the tragedy throughout this outbreak. Understanding the degree of integration between the financial systems of the world's two largest economies, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitates thorough research of the risk transmission from China's stock market to the U.S. stock market. This study examines the volatility transmission from the Chinese to the U.S. stock market from January 2001 to October 2020. We employ a variant form of the EGARCH (1,1) model with long-term control over the excessive volatility breakpoints identified by the ICSS algorithm. Since 2004, empirical evidence indicates that the volatility shocks of the Chinese stock market have frequently and negatively affected the volatility of the U.S. stock market. Most importantly, we explore that the COVID-19 pandemic vigorously and positively promoted the volatility infection from the Chinese equity market to the U.S. equity market in March 2020. This precious evidence endorses the asymmetric volatility transmission from the Chinese to the U.S. stock market when COVID-19 broke out. These experimental results provide profound insight into the risk contagion between the U.S. and China stock markets. They are also essential for securities investors to minimize portfolio risk. Furthermore, this paper suggests that globalization has carefully driven the integration of China's stock market with the international equity markets.

How stock markets reacted to COVID-19? Evidence from 25 countries.

Project description:The objective of this paper is to analyse how COVID-19 related government policies influenced stock markets. Of the 25 countries we consider, stock returns did not react to any of the three policies - the stimulus package, lockdown, and travel ban in 20% of countries. For around 48% of countries, the effect on returns was negative, due largely to the stimulus package and lockdown policies. Of the 13 countries that experienced a change in the cash rate, returns were negative for 46% of the markets. The travel ban had the least effect on stock returns.

Do non-pharmaceutical policies in response to COVID-19 affect stock performance? Evidence from Malaysia stock market return and volatility.

Project description:This paper examines the impact of non-pharmaceutical intervention by government on stock market return as well as volatility. Using daily Malaysian equity data from January 28, 2020 to May 31, 2022, the regression analysis with bootstrapping technique reveals that the government's response in combating the deadly virus through Stringency index has shown a positive direct effect on both stock market returns and volatility, and indirect negative effect on stock market returns. The study revealed that international travel restriction and cancelling public events are the major contributors to the growth of volatility when estimated for Malaysia stock market index. On the one hand, heterogenous impact is expected from the perspective of different sectors when the individual social distancing measures were taken into account in determining stock return and volatility. Apart from that, the robustness check for the main findings remains intact in majority of the regression models after incorporating daily COVID-19 death rate, log (daily vaccination) and day-of-the-week effect as additional control variable in alternative.

Linear response theory in stock markets.

Project description:Linear response theory relates the response of a system to a weak external force with its dynamics in equilibrium, subjected to fluctuations. Here, this framework is applied to financial markets; in particular we study the dynamics of a set of stocks from the NASDAQ during the last 20 years. Because unambiguous identification of external forces is not possible, critical events are identified in the series of stock prices as sudden changes, and the stock dynamics following an event is taken as the response to the external force. Linear response theory is applied with the log-return as the conjugate variable of the force, providing predictions for the average response of the price and return, which agree with observations, but fails to describe the volatility because this is expected to be beyond linear response. The identification of the conjugate variable allows us to define the perturbation energy for a system of stocks, and observe its relaxation after an event.
