A high spatial resolution land surface phenology dataset for AmeriFlux and NEON sites.

ABSTRACT: Vegetation phenology is a key control on water, energy, and carbon fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. Because vegetation canopies are heterogeneous, spatially explicit information related to seasonality in vegetation activity provides valuable information for studies that use eddy covariance measurements to study ecosystem function and land-atmosphere interactions. Here we present a land surface phenology (LSP) dataset derived at 3 m spatial resolution from PlanetScope imagery across a range of plant functional types and climates in North America. The dataset provides spatially explicit information related to the timing of phenophase changes such as the start, peak, and end of vegetation activity, along with vegetation index metrics and associated quality assurance flags for the growing seasons of 2017-2021 for 10 × 10 km windows centred over 104 eddy covariance towers at AmeriFlux and National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites. These LSP data can be used to analyse processes controlling the seasonality of ecosystem-scale carbon, water, and energy fluxes, to evaluate predictions from land surface models, and to assess satellite-based LSP products.

Project description:Knowledge of the dynamics of vegetation phenology is essential for the understanding of vegetation-climate interactions. Although the interest in phenology study is growing, vegetation phenology in Africa received far less attention compared to the Northern Hemisphere. Africa straddles the northern and southern hemispheres, and the climate has a clear latitudinal gradient, which facilitates the study of the interaction between phenology and climate. In this study, the latitudinal and longitudinal gradients and temporal trends of start of growing season (SOS), peak of growing season (POS), and end of growing season (EOS) were examined using long-term satellite dataset during 1982-2015. The latitudinal variations in these phenology metrics were larger in the northern than those in the southern Africa, especially from 6°N northwards to 16°N. The latitudinal variations in southern Africa had no clear patterns due to the more complex climate systems. For the longitudinal variation, the temporal trends in POS and EOS exhibited a gradient-decreasing rate in northern Africa. Over the period from 1982 to 2015, the overall trends of the phenology in Africa were 'later SOS', 'later POS', and 'later EOS'. The faster rate of delay in EOS than in SOS resulted in a prolonged length of growing season (LOS) with 0.50 days/year on average in northern Africa, while a slower rate of delay in EOS than in SOS resulted in a shorter LOS with -0.12 days/year in southern Africa. The prolonged LOS in northern Africa contributes to the increase in the yearly-averaged Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from 1982 to 2000. Nevertheless, the NDVI appeared to have reached saturation around the 2000s, although the LOS was still extending after 2000s. Overall, the findings of this study provide an overall view of the spatial and temporal patterns of land surface phenology in the African continent, and a necessary component for future studies on the response of phenology to climate.

Project description:In order to enhance the understanding of vine yield development and facilitate the design of innovative agricultural practices in viticulture (i.e., new estimation methods), it is essential to have accurate and detailed data on vine yield components, including unproductive vines, number of bunches, and bunch weight. However, obtaining accurate and high spatial resolution yield data at the vine scale is costly and difficult to have for the main yield components (number of bunches, weight of bunch, missing plants, etc.). As a result, existing vine yield data are frequently estimated or measured at the field level. Unfortunately, the accuracy of these vine yield data is insufficient to study the intricate relationships between different yield components and their spatial distribution within vineyards. In this context, this article proposes a complete vine yield dataset that was specifically collected to develop and to test new sampling protocols in precision viticulture. This dataset comprises a comprehensive mapping of vine yield at the plant scale over two vine fields located in the southern region of France. Both vine fields were planted with the Vitis vinifera: cv. Syrah. The first field (Field 1) occupies 0.8 ha and data were collected in 2022, while the second field (Field 2) has an area of 0.5 ha and data were collected in 2008. Throughout the growing season, information regarding unproductive vines, inflorescence number, and bunch weight was collected for both vine fields. For both fields, at the flowering stage, the location of each productive and unproductive vines (dead and missing vines) was georeferenced, and the number of inflorescences was manually counted for all productive vines. For Field 1, at harvest, all bunches of the field were manually weighed with an accuracy of ±1 gram and georeferenced precisely (one point per vine). For each vine, total yield (grams per vine) was then computed as as the sum of the weight of its bunches. For Field 2, at harvest, the total yield per vine was estimated based on the weighing of representative bunches obtained from several regularly spaced set of 5 vines. In addition to the yield data, two ancillary data, including soil apparent resistivity measurements and common vegetative index derived from remote sensed imagery, are provided for both vine fields. Overall, the dataset consists of 3644 vines, with 2151 being productive, along with a total count of 33354 inflorescences and 19635 manually weighed bunches at harvest. This dataset is of interest as it contains information on grape yield organization at the within-field level. This dataset could be used to assess the impact of unproductive vines on neighbouring vines yield, as well as the correlations between available ancillary data and all yield components.
