MWCNT/Ruthenium hydroxide aerogel supercapacitor production and investigation of electrochemical performances.

ABSTRACT: In this study, the material obtained from the sonication of the double-walled carbon nanotube and ruthenium chloride was produced as an aerogel. Then, symmetrical supercapacitor devices were made using them, and their electrochemical properties were investigated. XRD and FTIR were used in the structural analysis of the aerogel, STEM in surface images, and elemental analyses in EDX. Electrochemical analysis was performed by galvanostat/potentiostat. From the cyclic voltammetry analysis, the highest specific capacitance for MWCNT/Ruthenium hydroxide aerogels was achieved as 423 F/g at 5 mV/s. On the other hand, the corresponding values calculated from the charge-discharge curves were found to be 420.3 F/g and 319.9 F/g at the current densities of 0.5 A/g and 10.0 A/g, respectively. The capacitance retention of as-synthesized aerogel was 96.38% at the end of the 5000 consecutive consecutive cyclic voltammetry cycles.

Graphene/Ruthenium Active Species Aerogel as Electrode for Supercapacitor Applications.

Project description:Ruthenium active species containing Ruthenium Sulphide (RuS₂) is synthesized together with a self-assembled reduced graphene oxide (RGO) aerogel by a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. Ruthenium Chloride and L-Cysteine are used as reactants. The hydrothermal synthesis of the innovative hybrid material occurs at 180 °C for 12 h, by using water as solvent. The structure and morphology of the hybrid material are fully characterized by Raman, XRD, XPS, FESEM and TEM. The XRD and diffraction pattern obtained by TEM display an amorphous nanostructure of RuS₂ on RGO crystallized flakes. The specific capacitance measured in planar configuration in 1 M NaCl electrolyte at 5 mV s-1 is 238 F g-1. This supercapacitor electrode also exhibits perfect cyclic stability without loss of the specific capacitance after 15,000 cycles. In summary, the RGO/Ruthenium active species hybrid material demonstrates remarkable properties for use as active material for supercapacitor applications.

Ultrathin nickel hydroxide and oxide nanosheets: synthesis, characterizations and excellent supercapacitor performances.

Project description:High-quality ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of ?-Ni(OH)2 are synthesized at large scale via microwave-assisted liquid-phase growth under low-temperature atmospheric conditions. After heat treatment, non-layered NiO nanosheets are obtained while maintaining their original frame structure. The well-defined and freestanding nanosheets exhibit a micron-sized planar area and ultrathin thickness (<2 nm), suggesting an ultrahigh surface atom ratio with unique surface and electronic structure. The ultrathin 2D nanostructure can make most atoms exposed outside with high activity thus facilitate the surface-dependent electrochemical reaction processes. The ultrathin ?-Ni(OH)2 and NiO nanosheets exhibit enhanced supercapacitor performances. Particularly, the ?-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets exhibit a maximum specific capacitance of 4172.5 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1). Even at higher rate of 16 A g(-1), the specific capacitance is still maintained at 2680 F g(-1) with 98.5% retention after 2000 cycles. Even more important, we develop a facile and scalable method to produce high-quality ultrathin transition metal hydroxide and oxide nanosheets and make a possibility in commercial applications.

Pulse electrochemical synthesis of polypyrrole/graphene oxide@graphene aerogel for high-performance supercapacitor.

Project description:A novel electroactive polypyrrole/graphene oxide@graphene aerogel (PGO@GA) was synthesized for the first time by pulse electropolymerization. The off-time in this technique allows polypyrrole (PPy) to go through a more stable structural arrangement, meanwhile its electronic transmission performance is enhanced by immobilizing graphene oxide between PPy chains. Moreover, graphene aerogel provides a three-dimensional structure with high conductivity to protect PPy from swelling and shrinking during the capacitive testing. Under these synergistic effects, PGO@GA presents exceptional capacitive performances including high specific capacitance (625 F g-1 at 1 A g-1), excellent rate capability (keeping 478 F g-1 at 15 A g-1 with retention rate of 76.5%), and excellent cycling life (retaining 85.7% of its initial value when cycling 5000 times at 10 A g-1). Therefore, the strategy adopted by this research provides a good reference for preparing other PPy-based electrode materials applied in the fields of catalysis, sensing, adsorption and energy storage.

Enhancing Supercapacitor Electrochemical Performance with 3D Printed Cellular PEEK/MWCNT Electrodes Coated with PEDOT: PSS.

Project description:In this study, we examine the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor (SC) electrodes made from 3D-printed nanocomposites. These composites consist of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK), coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The electrochemical performance of a 3D-printed PEEK/MWCNT solid electrode with a surface area density of 1.2 mm-1 is compared to two distinct periodically porous PEEK/MWCNT electrodes with surface area densities of 7.3 and 7.1 mm-1. To enhance SC performance, the 3D-printed electrodes are coated with a conductive polymer, PEDOT:PSS. The architected cellular electrodes exhibit significantly improved capacitive properties, with the cellular electrode (7.1 mm-1) displaying a capacitance nearly four times greater than that of the solid 3D-printed electrode-based SCs. Moreover, the PEDOT:PSS-coated cellular electrode (7.1 mm-1) demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 12.55 mF·cm-3 at 50 mV·s-1, contrasting to SCs based on 3D-printed cellular electrodes (4.09 mF·cm-3 at 50 mV·s-1) without the coating. The conductive PEDOT:PSS coating proves effective in reducing surface resistance, resulting in a decreased voltage drop during the SCs' charging and discharging processes. Ultimately, the 3D-printed cellular nanocomposite electrode with the conductive polymer coating achieves an energy density of 1.98 μW h·cm-3 at a current of 70 μA. This study underscores how the combined effect of the surface area density of porous electrodes enabled by 3D printing, along with the conductivity imparted by the polymer coating, synergistically improves the energy storage performance.

Supercapacitor Performance of NiO, NiO-MWCNT, and NiO-Fe-MWCNT Composites.

Project description:The NiO-CNT and NiO-Fe-CNT composites that have been prepared from waste high density polyethylene plastic and their carbon nanotube (CNT) quality-dependent supercapacitance tuning have been reported here. Multiwalled CNT (MWCNT) formation has been confirmed from TEM and Raman spectra with an ID/IG ratio of 0.77, which stands for high graphitization. The specific surface area (SSA) of MWCNTs in the NiO-Fe-CNT composite was 87.8 m2/g, while in the NiO-CNT composite, it was 25 m2/g. NiO-Fe-CNT displayed higher specific capacitance and energy density (1360 Fg-1 and 1180 W h kg-1) than NiO-CNT (1250 Fg-1 and 1000 W h kg-1), which may be due to the presence of higher-quality MWCNTs in the NiO-Fe-CNT composite. NiO-Fe-CNT displayed higher contributions of electric double-layer capacitor (59%) behavior compared to NiO-CNT (38%) and represented a hybrid supercapacitor. NiO-Fe-CNT also displayed a capacitive retention of 96% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, studies in acidic electrolytes revealed higher performance of NiO-Fe-CNT than NiO-CNT, displaying specific capacitances of NiO-Fe-CNT to be 1147 Fg-1 in 2 M H2SO4 and 943 Fg-1 in 2 M HCl. It has been qualitatively explored that the quality of CNTs, SSA, and quantum confinement effects in the composites may be the factors responsible for the performance difference in NiO-Fe-CNT and NiO-CNT. The present work is geared toward the low-cost fabrication of high-quality CNT composites for supercapacitors and energy storage applications. The present work also contributes quantitatively to the understanding of CNT quality as an important parameter for the performance of CNT-composite-based supercapacitors.

Formation of a CoMn-Layered Double Hydroxide/Graphite Supercapacitor by a Single Electrochemical Step.

Project description:Hybrid electric storage systems that combine capacitive and faradaic materials need to be well designed to benefit from the advantages of batteries and supercapacitors. The ultimate capacitive material is graphite (GR), yet high capacitance is usually not achieved due to restacking of its sheets. Therefore, an appealing approach to achieve high power and energy systems is to embed a faradaic 2D material in between the graphite sheets. Here, a simple one-step approach was developed, whereby a faradaic material [layered double hydroxide (LDH)] was electrochemically formed inside electrochemically exfoliated graphite. Specifically, GR was exfoliated under negative potentials by CoII and, in the presence of MnII , formed GR-CoMn-LDH, which exhibited a high areal capacitance and energy density. The high areal capacitance was attributed to the exfoliation of the graphite at very negative potentials to form a 3D foam-like structure driven by hydrogen evolution as well as the deposition of CoMn-LDH due to hydroxide ion generation inside the GR sheets. The ratio between the CoII and MnII in the CoMn-LDH was optimized and analyzed, and the electrochemical performance was studied. Analysis of a cross-section of the GR-CoMn-LDH confirmed the deposition of LDH inside the GR layers. The areal capacitance of the electrode was 186 mF cm-2 at a scan rate of 2 mV s-1 . Finally, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with GR-CoMn-LDH and exfoliated graphite as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively, yielding an energy density of 96.1 μWh cm-3 and a power density of 5 mW cm-3 .

Effect of Crystal Morphology on Electrochemical Performances of IRH-2 and IRH-2/PANI Composite for Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Project description:In the context of recent progress in designing metal-organic framework (MOF)-based supercapacitor electrodes, we report herein the successful growth of two different crystal morphologies of a cerium-based MOF, octahedral crystals named IRH-2-O and elongated square-bipyramidal crystals named IRH-2-ESBP (IRH = Institute de Recherche sur l'Hydrogène). The identical crystal structure of both materials was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray mapping analysis corroborated this fact and showed the crystal shape variation versus the surface composition of synthesized materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and PXRD were used to confirm the purity of pristine MOFs as well as desired MOF//PANI composites. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy highlighted the effect of crystal shape on the electrochemical performance of IRH-2 MOFs; the specific capacitance tripled from 43.1 F·g-1 for IRH-2-O to 125.57 F·g-1 for IRH-2-ESBP at 5 mV·s-1. The cycling stability was notably ameliorated from 7 K for IRH-2-O to 20 K for IRH-2-ESBP. Regarding the composites, the cell voltage was notably ameliorated from 1.8 to 1.95 V. However, the electrochemical performance of IRH-2/PANI composites was drastically decreased due to instability in the acidic media. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first work that related the MOF crystal shape and the electrochemical performance.

Rapid synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenide-carbon aerogel composites for supercapacitor electrodes.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have recently demonstrated exceptional supercapacitor properties after conversion to a metallic phase, which increases the conductivity of the network. However, freestanding, exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenide films exhibit surface areas far below their theoretical maximum (1.2 %), can fail during electrochemical operation due to poor mechanical properties, and often require pyrophoric chemicals to process. On the other hand, pyrolyzed carbon aerogels exhibit extraordinary specific surface areas for double layer capacitance, high conductivity, and a strong mechanical network of covalent chemical bonds. In this paper, we demonstrate the scalable, rapid nanomanufacturing of TMD (MoS2 and WS2) and carbon aerogel composites, favoring liquid-phase exfoliation to avoid pyrophoric chemicals. The aerogel matrix support enhances conductivity of the composite and the synthesis can complete in 30 min. We find that the addition of transition metal dichalcogenides does not impact the structure of the aerogel, which maintains a high specific surface area up to 620 m2 g-1 with peak pore radii of 10 nm. While supercapacitor tests of the aerogels yield capacitances around 80 F g-1 at the lowest applied currents, the aerogels loaded with TMD's exhibit volumetric capacitances up to 127% greater than the unloaded aerogels. In addition, the WS2 aerogels show excellent cycling stability with no capacitance loss over 2000 cycles, as well as markedly better rate capability and lower charge transfer resistance compared to their MoS2-loaded counterparts. We hypothesize that these differences in performance stem from differences in contact resistance and in the favorability of ion adsorption on the chalcogenides.

Three-step-in-one synthesis of supercapacitor MWCNT superparamagnetic magnetite composite material under flow.

Project description:Composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles, Fe3O4@MWCNT, were synthesized in DMF in a vortex fluidic device (VFD). This involved in situ generation of the iron oxide nanoparticles by laser ablation of bulk iron metal at 1064 nm using a pulsed laser, over the dynamic thin film in the microfluidic platform. The overall processing is a three-step in one operation: (i) slicing MWCNTs, (ii) generating the superparamagnetic nanoparticles and (iii) decorating them on the surface of the MWCNTs. The Fe3O4@MWCNT composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscope, TG analysis, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. They were used as an active electrode for supercapacitor measurements, establishing high gravimetric and areal capacitances of 834 F g-1 and 1317.7 mF cm-2 at a scan rate of 10 mV s-1, respectively, which are higher values than those reported using similar materials. In addition, the designer material has a significantly higher specific energy of 115.84 W h kg-1 at a specific power of 2085 W kg-1, thereby showing promise for the material in next-generation energy storage devices.

Self-Assembled 3D Flower-Like Nickel Hydroxide Nanostructures and Their Supercapacitor Applications.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures have attracted considerable attention because of their high surface areas and unique properties which gives outstanding performance in catalysis and energy storage applications. This paper proposes the growth mechanism of 3D flower-like β-Ni(OH)2 constructed through a two dimensional sheet framework using a one-step oleylamine-assisted solvothermal approach, where oleylamine acts as the surfactant, co-solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent. A detailed examination of the product morphology after various reaction times suggested that the self-assembly of flower occurs through a mechanism involving nucleation, Ostwald ripening, and recrystallization. The associated characterization revealed it to be pure β-Ni(OH)2 without any sign of contamination. The effect of the morphology (sheet to 3D flower-like β-Ni(OH)2) on the electrochemical supercapacitive behavior was assessed by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. The results showed that 3D flower-like β-Ni(OH)2 exhibited better specific capacitance of ~1567 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) and retained ~25% capacitance at a high current density of 10 A g(-1) compared to the other reference materials. The superior electrochemical properties of the 3D flower-like β-Ni(OH)2 originate from their large specific surface area and unique structure.
