Project description:This study developed a facile approach for preparing Ti(3+) self-doped TiO2-graphene photocatalyst by a one-step vacuum activation technology involved a relative lower temperature, which could be activated by the visible light owing to the synergistic effect among Ti(3+) doping, some new intersurface bonds generation and graphene oxide reduction. Compared with the traditional methods, the vacuum activation involves a low temperature and low-costing, which can achieve the reduction of GO, the self doping of Ti(3+) in TiO2 and the loading of TiO2 nanoparticles on GR surface at the same time. These resulting TiO2-graphene composites show the high photodegradation rate of MO, high hydrogen evolution activity and excellent IPCE in the visible light irradiation. The facile vacuum activation method can provide an effective and practical approach to improve the performance of TiO2-graphene and other metal oxides-graphene towards their practical photocatalytic applications.

Project description:In situ activation-graphitization method based on the atomically dispersed K and Fe in organic salts is developed to synthesize hierarchical porous graphitic carbon by directly pyrolysis potassium citrate and iron citrate. Moreover, (NH4)2C2O4 is also employed as both N dopant and porogen to open up internal structure and regulate pore structure. The inside-out activation leads to the homogeneous reaction and interconnected hierarchical porous structure with few dead pores. Accompanied by high specific surface area, appropriate pore distribution, good conductivity, and N/O functional groups, the sample exhibits high capacitance of 322.6 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability with 101.5% capacitance retention after 15,000 cycles. The supercapacitor shows an energy density of 21.3 W h kg-1 at 456.7 W kg-1 in 1 M Na2SO4. Easy synthesis, cost-effective, and environmentally benign, the work provides a promising strategy to produce hierarchical porous graphitic carbon applied in energy storage.

Project description:It is urgently desired yet challenging to synthesize porous graphitic carbon (PGC) in a bottom-up manner while circumventing the need for high-temperature pyrolysis. Here we present an effective and scalable strategy to synthesize PGC through acid-mediated aldol triple condensation followed by low-temperature graphitization. The deliberate structural design enables its graphitization in situ in solution and at low pyrolysis temperature. The resulting material features ultramicroporosity characterized by a sharp pore size distribution. In addition, the pristine homogeneous composition of the reaction mixture allows for solution-processability of the material for further characterization and applications. Thin films of this PGC exhibit several orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity compared to analogous control materials that are carbonized at the same temperatures. The integration of low-temperature graphitization and solution-processability not only allows for an energy-efficient method for the production and fabrication of PGC, but also paves the way for its wider employment in applications such as electrocatalysis, sensing, and energy storage.

Project description:Carbon steel is strong primarily because of carbides with the most well-known one being ?-Fe3C type cementite. However, the formation mechanism of cementite remains unclear. In this study, a new metastable carbide formation mechanism was proposed as ?-Fe3C????'-Fe3C????'-Fe3C based on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation. Results shown that in quenched high-carbon binary alloys, hexagonal ?-Fe3C fine particles are distributed in the martensite twinning boundary alone, while two metastable carbides (?' and ?') coexist in the quenched pearlite. These two carbides both possess orthorhombic crystal structure with different lattice parameters (a?' = a?' = a??=?[Formula: see text]a?-Fe?=?4.033?Å, b?' = 2 × b?' = 2 × c??=?[Formula: see text]a?-Fe?=?4.94?Å, and c?' = c?' = [Formula: see text]a??=?6.986?Å for a?-Fe?=?2.852?Å). The ?' unit cell can be constructed simply by merging two ?' unit cells together along its b?' axis. Thus, the ?' unit cell contains 12 Fe atoms and 4?C atoms, which in turn matches the composition and atomic number of the ?-Fe3C cementite unit cell. The proposed theory in combination with experimental results gives a new insight into the carbide formation mechanism in Fe-C martensite.

Project description:The photoactivity of methanol adsorbed on the anatase TiO2 (101) surface was studied by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Isolated methanol molecules adsorbed at the anatase (101) surface show a negligible photoactivity. Two ways of methanol activation were found. First, methoxy groups formed by reaction of methanol with coadsorbed O2 molecules or terminal OH groups are photoactive, and they turn into formaldehyde upon UV illumination. The methoxy species show an unusual C 1s core-level shift of 1.4 eV compared to methanol; their chemical assignment was verified by DFT calculations with inclusion of final-state effects. The second way of methanol activation opens at methanol coverages above 0.5 monolayer (ML), and methyl formate is produced in this reaction pathway. The adsorption of methanol in the coverage regime from 0 to 2 ML is described in detail; it is key for understanding the photocatalytic behavior at high coverages. There, a hydrogen-bonding network is established in the adsorbed methanol layer, and consequently, methanol dissociation becomes energetically more favorable. DFT calculations show that dissociation of the methanol molecule is always the key requirement for hole transfer from the substrate to the adsorbed methanol. We show that the hydrogen-bonding network established in the methanol layer dramatically changes the kinetics of proton transfer during the photoreaction.

Project description:In this document, the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/Fe3O4, prepared by the mixing of the pure oxides, was studied. The photocatalytic degradation of aqueous Methylene Blue (MB) solutions (10 and 30 ppm) was performed, the TiO2/Fe3O4 catalysts in 80/20, 50/50 and 20/80 mass ratios were used during the test, artificial sunlight and natural solar radiation were tested at laboratory and pilot plant scale respectively. Besides, the kinetic reactions were evaluated according to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, the apparent velocity constants (kapp) were obtained for the TiO2/Fe3O4 catalysts. In the laboratory test, the TiO2/Fe3O4 catalyst (80/20) had a performance for 93.04% of discoloration, kapp = 0.0238 min-1, while for TiO2/Fe3O4 (50/50, 20/80) had an 83.46%, 65.00% for discoloration of MB and the kapp values were 0.0154 min-1 and 0.0098 min-1, respectively. In the solar test at pilot scale, the percentages of discoloration of 24.32%, and 57.78%, with kapp values of 0.00037 min-1, 0.00121 min-1 respectively were obtained for TiO2/Fe3O4 (80/20), a MB solution of 30 ppm, a load of 0.1 g/L and 0.3 g/L of the catalyst respectively.

Project description:The low quantum yields and lack of visible light utilization hinder the practical application of TiO2 in high-performance photocatalysis. Herein, we present a design of TiO2 nanopillar arrays (NPAs) decorated with both Au and Pt nanoparticles (NPs) directly synthesized through successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) at room temperature. Au/Pt NPs with sizes of ~4?nm are well-dispersed on the TiO2 NPAs as evidenced by electron microscopic analyses. The present design of Au/Pt co-decoration on the TiO2 NPAs shows much higher visible and ultraviolet (UV) light absorption response, which leads to remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activities on both the dye degradation and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Its photocatalytic reaction efficiency is 21 and 13 times higher than that of pure TiO2 sample under UV-vis and visible light, respectively. This great enhancement can be attributed to the synergy of electron-sink function of Pt and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Au NPs, which significantly improves charge separation of photoexcited TiO2. Our studies demonstrate that through rational design of composite nanostructures one can harvest visible light through the SPR effect to enhance the photocatalytic activities initiated by UV-light, and thus realize more effectively utilization of the whole solar spectrum for energy conversion.

Project description:Novel water resistant photocatalytic composites of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)-polyamide-amine-epichlorohydrin (PAE)-TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a simple two-step mixing process. The composites produced are flexible, uniform, reproducible and reusable; they can readily be removed from the pollutant once used. Small amount of TiO2 NPs are required for the loaded composites to exhibit a remarkable photocatalytic activity which is quantified here as achieving at least 95% of methyl orange degradation under 150?min of UV light irradiation for the composite with best combination. The cellulose network combined with PAE strongly retains NPs and hinders their release in the environment. PAE dosage (10 and 50?mg/g MFC) controls the NP retention in the cellulose fibrous matrix. As TiO2 content increases, the photocatalytic activity of the composites levels off to a constant; this is reached at 2wt% TiO2 NPs for 10?mg/g PAE and 20wt% for 50?mg/g PAE. SEM and SAXS analysis confirms the uniform distribution of NPs and their formation of aggregates in the cellulose fibre network. These economical and water resistant photocatalytic paper composites made by a simple, robust and easily scalable process are ideal for applications such as waste water treatment where efficiency, reusability and recyclability are important.

Project description:Upon freezing aqueous sucrose at temperatures higher than the eutectic point (-14 °C in this case), two phases, that is, ice and freeze concentrated solution (FCS), are spontaneously separated. FCS forms through-pore fluidic channels when thin ice septum is prepared from aqueous sucrose. Total FCS volume depends on temperature but is independent of the initial sucrose concentration. This allows us to control the size of the FCS channels simply by changing the initial sucrose concentration as long as temperature is kept constant. In this paper, we show that the size of the channel, which has a layered structure, can be controlled in a range from 50 nm to 3 ?m. Thus, the FCS channel is suitable for size-sorting of micro- and nanoparticles. We discuss the size-sorting efficiency of the channel and demonstrate the separation of particles with different sizes.
