Project description:In the present study, alkaline hydrothermally treated titania nanoparticles (TiO2-HT) are prepared and followed by calcination at different low temperatures to improve TiO2 activity under visible light. The prepared photocatalysts (PCs) are characterized by different tools. TiO2-HT is scrutinized for decontamination of para-nitrophenol (PNP) and hexavalent chromium ions (Cr6+ ions) under simulated sunlight. TiO2-HT-300 and TiO2-HT-400 PCs have nanosized particle with large surface area of 148 and 116.26?m2/g, respectively. Additionally, XRD and FTIR proved formation of nanocrystalline anatase TiO2. The different calcined TiO2-HT materials show lower adsorption capacity for PNP and Cr6+ ions. TiO2-HT-300 and HT-TiO2-400 PCs have higher reduction rate of PNP than that of uncalcined temperature titania (HT-TiO2-U) powder. Complete conversion of PNP is achieved at natural pH after 180?min over TiO2-HT-300. As well, TiO2-HT-300 exhibits a superior photocatalytic removal of Cr6+ ions. The enhanced photocatalytic efficacy is ascribed to the synergism between higher surface area and particle size (quantum effect) of TiO2-HT-300. As results, HO· radicals are the main key active species for the photocatalytic degradation of PNP over TiO2- HT-300 PC but contribution of O2- and h+ holes is minor. The used method for preparation of TiO2-HT-300 reduces the cost preparation as well as environmental impact reduction. Finally, low temperature-calcined TiO2 is promising visible light active and an efficient photocatalyst with lower environmental impact for detoxification of PNP and Cr6+ ions from water.

Project description:Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.

Project description:The design of highly efficient and stable photocatalysts to utilize solar energy is a significant challenge in photocatalysis. In this work, a series of novel p-n heterojunction photocatalysts, Li2SnO3/g-C3N4, was successfully prepared via a facile calcining method, and exhibited superior photocatalytic activity toward the photodegradation of Rhodamine B solution under visible light irradiation as compared with pure Li2SnO3 and g-C3N4. The maximum kinetic rate constant of photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B within 60 min was 0.0302 min-1, and the composites still retained excellent performance after four successive recycles. Chemical reactive species trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide ions ( ·O2- ) were the dominant active species in the photocatalytic oxidation of Rhodamine B solution, while holes (h+) only played a minor role. We demonstrated that the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity could be assigned to the formation of a p-n junction photocatalytic system, which benefitted the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. This study provides a visible light-responsive heterojunction photocatalyst with potential applications in environmental remediation.

Project description:In this study, the effectiveness of using a perovskite/Zr-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) heterojunction in realizing efficient and stable inverted p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) is demonstrated. Two types of Zr-MOFs, UiO-66 and MOF-808, are investigated owing to their respectable moisture and chemical stabilities. The MOFs while serving as an interlayer in conjunction with the perovskite film are shown to possess the advantages of UV-filtering capability and enhancing perovskite crystallinity. Consequently, the UiO-66/MOF-808-modified PVSCs yield enhanced power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 17.01% and 16.55%, outperforming the control device (15.79%). While further utilizing a perovskite/Zr-MOF hybrid heterojunction to fabricate the devices, the hybrid MOFs are found to possibly distribute over the perovskite grain boundary providing a grain-locking effect to simultaneously passivate the defects and to reinforce the film's robustness against moisture invasion. As a result, the PCEs of the UiO-66/MOF-808-hybrid PVSCs are further enhanced to 18.01% and 17.81%, respectively. Besides, over 70% of the initial PCE is retained after being stored in air (25 °C and relative humidity of 60 ± 5%) for over 2 weeks, in contrast to the quick degradation observed for the control device. This study demonstrates the promising potential of using perovskite/MOF heterojunctions to fabricate efficient and stable PVSCs.

Project description:Chromium (Cr) (VI) has long been known as an environmental hazard that can be reduced from aqueous solutions through bioremediation by living cells. In this study, we investigated the efficiency of reduction and biosorption of Cr(VI) by chromate resistant bacteria isolated from tannery effluent. From 28 screened Cr(VI) resistant isolates, selected bacterial strain SH-1 was identified as Klebsiella sp. via 16S rRNA sequencing. In Luria-Bertani broth, the relative reduction level of Cr(VI) was 95%, but in tannery effluent, it was 63.08% after 72 h of incubation. The cell-free extract of SH-1 showed a 72.2% reduction of Cr(VI), which indicated a higher activity of Cr(VI) reducing enzyme than the control. Live and dead biomass of SH-1 adsorbed 51.25 mg and 29.03 mg Cr(VI) per gram of dry weight, respectively. Two adsorption isotherm models-Langmuir and Freundlich-were used for the illustration of Cr(VI) biosorption using SH-1 live biomass. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed an increased cell size of the treated biomass when compared to the controlled biomass, which supports the adsorption of reduced Cr on the biomass cell surface. Fourier-transform infrared analysis indicated that Cr(VI) had an effect on bacterial biomass, including quantitative and structural modifications. Moreover, the chickpea seed germination study showed beneficial environmental effects that suggest possible application of the isolate for the bioremediation of toxic Cr(VI).

Project description:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) are the primary chromium oxidation states found in ambient atmospheric particulate matter. While Cr(III) is relatively nontoxic, Cr(VI) is toxic and exposure to Cr(VI) may lead to cancer, nasal damage, asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonitis. Accurate measurement of the ambient Cr(VI) concentrations is an environmental challenge since Cr(VI) can be reduced to Cr(III) and vice versa during sampling. In the present study, a new Cr(VI) sampler (Clarkson sampler) was designed, constructed, and field tested to improve the sampling of Cr(VI) in ambient air. The new Clarkson Cr(VI) sampler was based on the concept that deliquescence during sampling leads to aqueous phase reactions. Thus, the relative humidity of the sampled air was reduced below the deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) of the ambient particles. The new sampler was operated to collect total suspended particles (TSP), and compared side-by-side with the current National Air Toxics Trends Stations (NATTS) Cr(VI) sampler that is utilized in the US. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air toxics monitoring program. Side-by-side field testing of the samplers occurred in Elizabeth, NJ during the winter and summer of 2012. The average recovery values of Cr(VI) spikes after 24-hr sampling intervals during summer and winter sampling were 57 and 72%, respectively, for the Clarkson sampler while the corresponding average values for NATTS samplers were 46% for both summer and winter sampling, respectively. Preventing the ambient aerosol collected on the filters from deliquescing is a key to improving the sampling of Cr(VI).

Project description:Semiconducting nanomaterials play an important role in the photocatalytic removal of aqueous pollutants like heavy metals, organic compounds, pathogens and antibiotics. In this study, we prepared ZnO quantum dots (QD) by the precipitation method and ZnO/rGO materials with varying percentages (0.5-2 wt%) of ZnO were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by various physicochemical techniques, such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-VIS-DRS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis to determine the structural as well as textural and surface properties. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared catalysts was analyzed during the individual and simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC) and hexavalent chromium [Cr(vi)] in aqueous medium. Among all the catalysts, 1.5 wt% ZnO/rGO showed the highest visible light activity, where 68% tetracycline and 84% Cr(vi) abatement was observed after 120 min irradiation time. Moreover, tetracycline showed 70% mineralization. The photocatalytic activity is explained based on the photo-generated electron transfer from the conduction band (CB) of ZnO to the surface of rGO which prevents the recombination of excitons and produces OH˙ and O2 -˙; these radicals play an important role in degrading the TC and Cr(vi). The mechanism suggested that the co-existence of oxidizable and reducible species such as TC and Cr(vi) ensured the effective use of the photo-generated electrons and holes that leads to the efficient oxidation of TC and Cr(vi) reduction.

Project description:The impact of high concentrations of heavy metals and the loss of functional microorganisms usually affect the nitrogen removal process in wastewater treatment systems. In the study, a unique auto-aggregating aerobic denitrifier (Pseudomonas stutzeri strain YC-34) was isolated with potential applications for Cr(VI) biosorption and reduction. The nitrogen removal efficiency and denitrification pathway of the strain were determined by measuring the concentration changes of inorganic nitrogen during the culture of the strain and amplifying key denitrification functional genes. The changes in auto-aggregation index, hydrophobicity index, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) characteristic index were used to evaluate the auto-aggregation capacity of the strain. Further studies on the biosorption ability and mechanism of cadmium in the process of denitrification were carried out. The changes in tolerance and adsorption index of cadmium were measured and the micro-characteristic changes on the cell surface were analyzed. The strain exhibited excellent denitrification ability, achieving 90.58% nitrogen removal efficiency with 54 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen as the initial nitrogen source and no accumulation of ammonia and nitrite-nitrogen. Thirty percentage of the initial nitrate-nitrogen was converted to N2, and only a small amount of N2O was produced. The successful amplification of the denitrification functional genes, norS, norB, norR, and nosZ, further suggested a complete denitrification pathway from nitrate to nitrogen. Furthermore, the strain showed efficient aggregation capacity, with the auto-aggregation and hydrophobicity indices reaching 78.4 and 75.5%, respectively. A large amount of protein-containing EPS was produced. In addition, the strain effectively removed 48.75, 46.67, 44.53, and 39.84% of Cr(VI) with the initial concentrations of 3, 5, 7, and 10 mg/L, respectively, from the nitrogen-containing synthetic wastewater. It also could reduce Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III). FTIR measurements and characteristic peak deconvolution analysis demonstrated that the strain had a robust hydrogen-bonded structure with strong intermolecular forces under the stress of high Cr(VI) concentrations. The current results confirm that the novel denitrifier can simultaneously remove nitrogen and chromium and has potential applications in advanced wastewater treatment for the removal of multiple pollutants from sewage.

Project description:6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FtS) is being widely used as a mist suppressant in the chromate (Cr(vi)) plating process. As a result, it is often present alongside Cr(vi) in the chromate plating wastewater (CPW). While the removal of Cr(vi) from CPW has been studied for decades, little attention has been paid to the treatment of 6:2 FtS. In this study, the removal of Cr(vi) and 6:2 FtS by Ga2O3, In2O3, and TiO2 photocatalysts was investigated. In the Ga2O3/UVC system, over 95% of Cr(vi) was reduced into Cr(iii) after only 5 min. Simultaneously, 6:2 FtS was degraded into F- and several perfluorocarboxylates. The predominant reactive species responsible for the degradation of 6:2 FtS in the Ga2O3 system were identified to be hVB + and O2˙-. In addition, it was observed that the presence of Cr(vi) helped accelerate the degradation of 6:2 FtS. This synergy between Cr(vi) and 6:2 FtS was attributable to the scavenging of eCB - by Cr(vi), which retarded the recombination of eCB - and hVB +. The In2O3/UVC system was also capable of removing Cr(vi) and 6:2 FtS, although at significantly slower rates. In contrast, poor removal of 6:2 FtS was achieved with the TiO2/UVC system, because Cr(iii) adsorbed on TiO2 and inhibited its reactivity. Based on the results of this study, it is proposed that CPW can be treated by a treatment train that consists of an oxidation-reduction step driven by Ga2O3/UVC, followed by a neutralization step that converts dissolved Cr(iii) into Cr(OH)3(S).

Project description:This study primarily focused on the efficient transformation of low-priced blue coke powder into a high-capacity adsorbent and aimed to address the pollution issue of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI))-laden wastewater and to facilitate the effective utilization of blue coke powder. A two-step method was utilized to fabricate a blue coke-based nitric acid-modified material (LCN), and the impact of nitric acid modification on the material's structure and its efficacy in treating Cr (VI)-contaminated wastewater was evaluated. Our experimental results illustrated that, under identical conditions, LCN exhibited superior performance for Cr (VI) treatment compared to the method employing only potassium hydroxide (LCK). The specific surface area and pore volume of LCN were 1.39 and 1.36 times greater than those of LCK, respectively. Further chemical composition analysis revealed that the functional group structure on the LCN surface was more conducive to Cr (VI) adsorption. The highest amount of Cr (VI) that LCN could bind was measured at 181.962 mg/g at 318 K. This was mostly due to chemisorption, which is dominated by redox reactions. The Cr (VI) removal process by LCN was identified to be a spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-increasing process. Several tests on recycling and reuse showed that LCN is a stable and effective chromium-containing wastewater adsorbent, showing that it could be used in many situations.
