Project description:Green synthetic protocol refers to the development of processes for the sustainable production of chemicals and materials. For the synthesis of various biologically active compounds, energy-efficient and environmentally benign processes are applied, such as microwave irradiation technology, ultrasound-mediated synthesis, photo-catalysis (ultraviolet, visible and infrared irradiation), molecular sieving, grinding and milling techniques, etc. Thesemethods are considered sustainable technology and become valuable green protocol to synthesize new drug molecules as theyprovidenumerous benefits over conventional synthetic methods.Based on this concept, oxadiazole derivatives are synthesized under microwave irradiation technique to reduce the formation of byproduct so that the product yield can be increased quantitatively in less reaction time. Hence, the synthesis of drug molecules under microwave irradiation follows a green chemistry approach that employs a set of principles to minimize or remove the utilization and production of hazardous toxic materials during the design, manufacture and application of chemical substances.This approach plays a major role in controlling environmental pollution by utilizing safer solvents, catalysts, suitable reaction conditions and thereby increases the atom economy and energy efficiency. Oxadiazole is a five-membered heterocyclic compound that possesses one oxygen and two nitrogen atoms in the ring system.Oxadiazole moiety is drawing considerable interest for the development of new drug candidates with potential therapeutic activities including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticonvulsant, anticancer, antimalarial, antitubercular, anti-asthmatic, antidepressant, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antiparkinsonian, analgesic and antiinflammatory, etc. This review focuses on different synthetic approaches of oxadiazole derivatives under microwave heating method and study of their various biological activities.

Project description:Sporopollenin exine capsules (SECs) extracted from Lycopodium clavatum spores are an attractive biomaterial possessing a highly robust structure suitable for microencapsulation strategies. Despite several decades of research into SEC extraction methods, the protocols commonly used for L. clavatum still entail processing with both alkaline and acidolysis steps at temperatures up to 180 °C and lasting up to 7 days. Herein, we demonstrate a significantly streamlined processing regimen, which indicates that much lower temperatures and processing durations can be used without alkaline lysis. By employing CHN elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and dynamic image particle analysis (DIPA), the optimum conditions for L. clavatum SEC processing were determined to include 30 hours acidolysis at 70 °C without alkaline lysis. Extending these findings to proof-of-concept encapsulation studies, we further demonstrate that our SECs are able to achieve a loading of 0.170 ± 0.01 g BSA per 1 g SECs by vacuum-assisted loading. Taken together, our streamlined processing method and corresponding characterization of SECs provides important insights for the development of applications including drug delivery, cosmetics, personal care products, and foods.

Project description:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was synthesized from a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly method by using Capsicum annuum (CA) as reducing agent. The rGO was mixed with SnO2 to synthesize a nanocomposite. The synthesized materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy techniques. The SnO2-C. annuum reduced graphene oxide (CRGO) nanocomposite exhibited a photodegradation efficiency of 97.4% when employed to remove methylene green (MG) dye. The synthesized nanocomposite showed improved photodegradation ability due to its high charge transfer and separation and owing to the presence of the large surface area of the CRGO network system. Degraded water was used in the plant and animal survival study, in which the dye solution treated with CRGO nanocomposite exhibited better growth compared to that of untreated MG solution. Likewise, in the ecotoxicity study, Artemia salina and zebra fish (Danio rerio) survival was found to be enhanced with CRGO nanocomposite-treated dye solution. This finding supports the effectiveness of CRGO/SnO2 nanocomposite for the treatment of MG dye-contaminated effluent samples.

Project description:Splendid advancement of micro/nanofluidic researches in the field of bio- and chemical-analysis enables various ubiquitous applications such as bio-medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, etc. In such devices, nanostructures are the essential elements so that the nanofabrication methods have been major issues since the last couple of decades. However, most of nanofabrication methods are sophisticated and expensive due to the requirement of high-class cleanroom facilities, while low-cost and biocompatible materials have been already introduced in the microfluidic platforms. Thus, an off-the-shelf and biodegradable material for those nanostructures can complete the concept of an eco-friendly micro/nanofluidic platform. In this work, biodegradable materials originated from well-known organisms such as human nail plate and denatured hen egg (albumen and yolk) were rigorously investigated as a perm-selective nanoporous membrane. A simple micro/nanofluidic device integrated with such materials was fabricated to demonstrate nanofluidic phenomena. These distinctive evidences (the visualization of ion concentration polarization phenomenon, ohmic/limiting/over-limiting current behavior and surface charge-governed conductance) can fulfill the requirements of functional nanostructures for the nanofluidic applications. Therefore, while these materials were less robust than nano-lithographically fabricated structures, bio-oriented perm-selective materials would be utilized as a one of key elements of the biodegradable and eco friendly micro/nanofluidic applications.

Project description:Palladium is a versatile catalyst, but the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) is usually attained at a high temperature in the range of 160 °C to 200 °C using toxic reducing agents such as sodium borohydride. We report the synthesis of PdNPs using a low-cost and environmentally-friendly route at ambient temperatures. Quercetin diphosphate (QDP), a naturally-derived flavonoid, was employed as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The effect of temperature was optimized to produce perfectly spherical PdNP nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 microns in diameter. At relatively higher concentration of QDP, significantly smaller particles were produced with a size distribution of 1-7 nm. Perfectly spherical PdNP nanoparticles are a rare occurrence, especially under ambient room temperature conditions with fast reaction time. The formation of the nanoparticles was confirmed using UV-vis, TEM, EDS, and XRD. HRTEM demonstrated the lattice structure of the PdNPs. The synthesized PdNPs were also tested for their antifungal properties against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Fusarium oxysporum. Results showed that the size of the PdNPs played a critical role in their antifungal activity. However, for F. oxysporum, other factors beyond size could affect the antifungal activity including fine-scale, nutrient composition, and target organisms.

Project description:In this paper, we demonstrate the application of Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Evaporative Crystallization (MA-MAEC) technique to rapid and selective crystallization of a small drug compound. i.e. acetaminophen. Subsequent characterization of the crystals by optical microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman spectroscopy showed quantitatively selective growth of different crystal forms at various experimental conditions. Acetaminophen crystals were grown predominantly as Form I (99%) on blank glass slides at room temperature. Form II crystals with 39% purity grown on SIFs using microwave energy.

Project description:Scutellaria multicaulis is a medicinal plant indigenous to Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It has been widely used as a prominent herb in traditional medicine for thousands of years. This plant is reported to contain baicalein, wogonin, and chrysin flavonoids, which are a significant group of chemical ingredients which can cure different diseases, such as breast cancer. S. multicaulis leaf extract was used for the bioreduction of silver nanoparticles (SmL-Ag-NPs), and their phytochemical contents and antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-proliferative, and apoptotic activity were evaluated. Optimal physicochemical properties of SmL-Ag-NPs were obtained by mixing 5% of leaf extract and 2 mM of aqueous AgNO3 solution and confirmed by characterization studies including UV-visible spectrophotometry, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), zeta potential, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), X-ray crystallography (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. SmL-Ag-NPs exhibited a higher content of total phenol and total flavonoid and potential antioxidant activity. SmL-Ag-NPs also demonstrated dose-dependent cytotoxicity against MDA-MB231 cell multiplication with an IC50 value of 37.62 μg/mL through inducing cell apoptosis. Results show that SmL-Ag-NPs is effective at inhibiting the proliferation of MDA-MB231 cells compared to tamoxifen. This demonstrates that SmL-Ag-NPs could be a bio-friendly and safe strategy to develop new cancer therapies with a reduction in the adverse effects of chemotherapy in the near future.

Project description:The leaching of rare earth elements (REEs) from secondary resources is exponentially increasing to supply the widespread range of high-tech applications of these elements including phosphors lighting materials, catalysis and permanent magnets. Phosphate fertilizer byproducts including phosphogypsum (PG) were identified as a potential alternative resource of REEs, not only to face the expansion of market demand, but also to achieve a sustainable management of REE resources. This study reports the leaching of REEs from PG using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) as a green organo-sulfonic acid in comparison with other acids such as p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). MSA achieved the highest leaching efficiency of 78% with low solubility of PG under the operating conditions of 3 M, solid to liquid ratio (S/L) of 1/8, 120 min and 25 °C. The optimized leaching process was also modeled using shrinking core theory to assess the kinetics behavior of the system and to enable the determination of the predominant mechanisms. It was demonstrated that the leaching is governed by a product layer diffusion-controlled model with an activation energy of 2.73 kJ mol-1. The cleaned PG after leaching could greatly meet the quality requirements of the building materials industry.

Project description:Nanoporous materials such as Mobil composite material number 41 (MCM-41) are attractive for applications such as catalysis, adsorption, supports, and carriers. Green synthesis of MCM-41 is particularly appealing because the chemical reagents are useful and valuable. We report on the eco-friendly synthesis of MCM-41 nanoporous materials via multi-cycle approach by re-using the non-reacted reagents in supernatant as mother liquor after separating the solid product. This approach was achieved via minimal requirement of chemical compensation where additional fresh reactants were added into the mother liquor followed by pH adjustment after each cycle of synthesis. The solid product of each successive batch was collected and characterized while the non-reacted reagents in supernatant can be recovered and re-used to produce subsequent cycle of MCM-41. The multi-cycle synthesis is demonstrated up to three times in this research. This approach suggests a low cost and eco-friendly synthesis of nanoporous material since less waste is discarded after the product has been collected, and in addition, product yield can be maintained at the high level.
