Development of pre-service early childhood teachers' technology integrations skills through a praxeological approach.

ABSTRACT: How to improve and what should be carried out for pre-service teachers' technological competencies for teaching purposes is still an important issue on the agenda of the higher education field. In light of this, we aimed to reflect the individual and collective technology integration knowledge and skills construction process of pre-service early childhood education teachers with democratic participation. We utilized the praxeological approach as a method and learning approach to reveal the reflections of the instructional technologies course. The participants in this study were 52 sophomore pre-service teachers in the early childhood education department. We collected the data from various sources such as interviews, portfolios, researchers' field notes, e-mails, online course evaluation form. We carried out the thematic analysis method to analyze the data. The findings indicated that three main themes emerged as initial challenges, learning process, and learning outcomes during enhancement of pre-service early childhood teachers' technology integration knowledge and skills. As a result, the praxeological approach used in instructional technologies courses in teacher education programs leads to a crucial digital transformation to be ready to become future teachers.

Project description:This study proposed an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) to examine the factors that influence pre-service teachers' intention to use technology-enabled learning, using constructivist pedagogical beliefs (CPB) and information and communication technologies (ICT) competencies as antecedent variables for attitudes, subjective norms (SNs), and perceived behavioral control. An online study was conducted with a random sample of pre-service teachers from 7 universities in China, and 811 validated questionnaires were obtained. The results showed that the extended TPB model explained 75% of the variance in intention; attitude, SNs, and perceived behavioral control had a positive and significant effect on intention. Furthermore, SNs had a positive and significant effect on attitude and perceived behavioral control. CPB were the antecedent variables for attitude, SNs, perceived behavioral control, and ICT competencies. ICT competencies were the antecedent variable for SNs and perceived behavioral control. Additionally, through multi-group analysis, this study found significant differences in path relationships between the lower and higher-grade groups. The effect of perceived behavioral control on intention diminished with increased grade level. The effect of SNs on perceived behavioral control reduced. The effect of CPB on attitude and perceived behavioral control on intention diminished. The effect of SNs on attitude increased. This study verified that adding the relationship between antecedent variables of theoretical factors and theoretical factors is an effective way to expand TPB and provided a reference for future studies to focus on the related intention of pre-service teachers. Furthermore, it recommends that Chinese universities should eliminate the hindering influence of CPB, ICT competencies, attitudes, SNs, and perceived behavioral control in the process of preparing pre-service teachers. They should also pay attention to the individual differences of students in different grades and the problems that arise in the existing training.

Project description:BackgroundEarly childhood teachers (ECTs) play a significant role in equipping children with oral language and emergent literacy skills ahead of school entry. They are well positioned to play a vital role in ensuring preschool children receive a high-quality preschool curriculum to prepare them for later literacy learning.AimsThe purpose of this study was to explore early career ECTs' views and confidence regarding their role in providing preschoolers with oral language and emergent literacy support and to examine their perceptions of their preservice preparation.Methods & proceduresNine Australian early career ECTs were recruited via purposive sampling for an in-depth, semi-structured interview. Data were analysed using an inductive thematic analysis approach.Outcomes & resultsParticipants attached strong significance to their role in facilitating children's oral language growth and emergent literacy skills and reported a range of practices to support children's learning. However, they rarely referred to using established language facilitation strategies or using dialogic book reading prompts. Further, emergent literacy concepts such as phonological awareness and print awareness were not routinely described as features of participants' classroom activities. Participants did not consistently make a clear conceptual distinction between the constructs of oral language and emergent literacy and often used these terms interchangeably. Notably, participants indicated that they did not feel confident in their ability to identify preschool children who were not meeting developmental language milestones and reported that they felt poorly equipped to do so by their preservice training.Conclusions & implicationsECTs' strong willingness to support preschool children's oral language and emergent literacy skills may be hindered by gaps in their knowledge; these may contribute to important and missed opportunities for identifying and supporting preschoolers' oral language and emergent literacy growth.What this paper addsWhat is already known on this subject? High-quality learning experiences in preschool are important for maximising preschoolers' oral language and emergent literacy growth. Early childhood teachers can play an important role in facilitating this development and preparing children for later literacy learning. What this paper adds to existing knowledge? The study findings provide insight into ECTs' perceptions of their role and support in developing children's oral language and emergent literacy skills. The results indicated ECTs did not feel confident with their knowledge of children's language milestones or identifying children with language difficulties. Participants reported that their preservice training left them underprepared in the area of oral language. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? ECTs demonstrated a strong willingness to support preschoolers' oral language and emergent literacy skills. However, their self-reported knowledge gaps and low confidence may have implications for the early detection of children who are not reaching language developmental milestones in a timely way.
