Project description:According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the world every year. The design and development of biosensors for the detection of CVD markers could be one of the major contributions of the scientific community to society. In this context, acetic acid functionalized graphene quantum dots (fGQDs) were used as an interface for the electrochemical detection of cardiac Troponin I (cTnI). The interaction of cTnI with fGQDs for the early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction was investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometry. The carbodiimide conjugation between the N-H group of cTnI and the functionalized COOH group on GQDs enabled the detection of cTnI biomarker. The same sensing mechanism was confirmed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR). The fGQDs modified Au electrode showed remarkable electrocatalytic oxidation of cTnI with good stability and sensitivity over a linear range of 0.17 to 3 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.02 ng mL-1. Bland-Altman plots substantiate a bias between the intra-/inter-cTnI assay and calibrated cTnI assay with 95% limits of agreement (mean difference ± 1.96 SD). The aim of this study is to describe an innovative method to detect cardiac biomarker cTnI and provide preliminary data on its diagnostic capacity. At the same time, its applicability in clinical setting will have to be validated with a significant number of samples collected from patients.

Project description:Single self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots are promising bright sources of indistinguishable photons for quantum information science. However, their distribution in emission wavelength, due to inhomogeneous broadening inherent to their growth, has limited the ability to create multiple identical sources. Quantum frequency conversion can overcome this issue, particularly if implemented using scalable chip-integrated technologies. Here, we report the first demonstration of quantum frequency conversion of a quantum dot single-photon source on a silicon nanophotonic chip. Single photons from a quantum dot in a micropillar cavity are shifted in wavelength with an on-chip conversion efficiency ≈ 12 %, limited by the linewidth of the quantum dot photons. The intensity autocorrelation function g(2)(τ) for the frequency-converted light is antibunched with g(2)(0)=0.290±0.030, compared to the before-conversion value g(2)(0)=0.080±0.003. We demonstrate the suitability of our frequency conversion interface as a resource for quantum dot sources by characterizing its effectiveness across a wide span of input wavelengths (840 nm to 980 nm), and its ability to achieve tunable wavelength shifts difficult to obtain by other approaches.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received much attention due to their novel phenomena of charge transport and light absorption/emission. The optical transitions are known to be available up to ~6 eV in GQDs, especially useful for ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs). Thus, the demonstration of photodetection gain with GQDs would be the basis for a plenty of applications not only as a single-function device in detecting optical signals but also a key component in the optoelectronic integrated circuits. Here, we firstly report high-efficient photocurrent (PC) behaviors of PDs consisting of multiple-layer GQDs sandwiched between graphene sheets. High detectivity (>10(11) cm Hz(1/2)/W) and responsivity (0.2 ~ 0.5 A/W) are achieved in the broad spectral range from UV to near infrared. The observed unique PD characteristics prove to be dominated by the tunneling of charge carriers through the energy states in GQDs, based on bias-dependent variations of the band profiles, resulting in novel dark current and PC behaviors.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have gained popularity in nano-biotechnology due to their multifunctional delivery and imaging capabilities. The outcome of their therapeutic delivery applications relies on understanding cell internalization routes. Current literature presents often conflicting results based on surveying only a few endocytosis inhibitors. Herein, a holistic approach to cell uptake studies by utilizing six different inhibitors while considering their on- and off-target effects on internalization of the GQDs of different charges is provided. Endocytosis paths are explored by tracking intracellular GQD fluorescence in HeLa or HEK-293 cells. Contrary to the previous assumptions of a singular entry route, findings suggest that GQDs enter the cells through several endocytosis paths with some more prevalent than others. Selectivity between the pathways is based on GQD charge and functional groups. Positively charged nitrogen-doped GQDs (NGQDs) predominantly utilize a fast endophilin-mediated endocytosis (FEME) in HeLa cells with a secondary preference for clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME). In HEK-293 cells NGQDs internalize via clathrin-independent, glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein-enriched compartments (CLIC/GEEC) and FEME. Conversely, GQDs with a substantial negative surface charge uptake through CME in HeLa cells. The optimization of these mechanisms can enhance GQD applications in biomedicine, ideally streamlining their translation into the clinic.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are an allotrope of carbon with a planar surface amenable to functionalization and nanoscale dimensions that confer photoluminescence. Collectively, these properties render GQDs an advantageous platform for nanobiotechnology applications, including optical biosensing and delivery. Towards this end, noncovalent functionalization offers a route to reversibly modify and preserve the pristine GQD substrate, however, a clear paradigm has yet to be realized. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of noncovalent polymer adsorption to GQD surfaces, with a specific focus on single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). We study how GQD oxidation level affects the propensity for polymer adsorption by synthesizing and characterizing four types of GQD substrates ranging ~60-fold in oxidation level, then investigating noncovalent polymer association to these substrates. Adsorption of ssDNA quenches intrinsic GQD fluorescence by 31.5% for low-oxidation GQDs and enables aqueous dispersion of otherwise insoluble no-oxidation GQDs. ssDNA-GQD complexation is confirmed by atomic force microscopy, by inducing ssDNA desorption, and with molecular dynamics simulations. ssDNA is determined to adsorb strongly to no-oxidation GQDs, weakly to low-oxidation GQDs, and not at all for heavily oxidized GQDs. Finally, we reveal the generality of the adsorption platform and assess how the GQD system is tunable by modifying polymer sequence and type.

Project description:The relaxation time of a single-electron spin is an important parameter for solid-state spin qubits, as it directly limits the lifetime of the encoded information. Thanks to the low spin-orbit interaction and low hyperfine coupling, graphene and bilayer graphene (BLG) have long been considered promising platforms for spin qubits. Only recently, it has become possible to control single-electrons in BLG quantum dots (QDs) and to understand their spin-valley texture, while the relaxation dynamics have remained mostly unexplored. Here, we report spin relaxation times (T1) of single-electron states in BLG QDs. Using pulsed-gate spectroscopy, we extract relaxation times exceeding 200 μs at a magnetic field of 1.9 T. The T1 values show a strong dependence on the spin splitting, promising even longer T1 at lower magnetic fields, where our measurements are limited by the signal-to-noise ratio. The relaxation times are more than two orders of magnitude larger than those previously reported for carbon-based QDs, suggesting that graphene is a potentially promising host material for scalable spin qubits.

Project description:Selective separation of small molecules by membranes is inhibited by the performance gap between nanofiltration and ultrafiltration membranes. In this work, a membrane that can efficiently remove small molecules (> 300 Da) was created by incorporating graphene oxide quantum dots (GQDs) into a cellulose membrane using an ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate). Incorporation of GQD into cellulose membranes using an ionic liquid brings several advantages over traditional mixed matrix membranes: 1) GQDs are abundant in peripheral hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, thus GQDs have strong binding with cellulose through hydrogen bonding and forms a stable composite membrane. 2) Negative surface charge of GQDs helps prevent aggregation. 3) The size (5 nm) of GQD is smaller than most nanoparticles used in membranes, allowing for interesting pore forming properties. GQD-cellulose membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation in water. It was determined that about 45% of GQDs are incorporated from solution to membrane. GQDs were determined to be located on the membrane surface, giving the membrane negative surface charge and improved hydrophilicity. GQDs showed no leaching after convective flow through the membrane. Impact of GQD on membrane permeability and rejection was studied through convective flow experiments, and through longer term permeability studies.

Project description:The integration of PbS quantum dots (QDs) with graphene represents a notable advancement in enhancing the optoelectronic properties of quantum-dot-based devices. This study investigated the electrical transport properties of PbS quantum dot (QD)/graphene heterostructures, leveraging the high carrier mobility of graphene. We fabricated QD/graphene/SiO2/Si heterostructures by synthesizing p-type monolayer graphene via chemical vapor deposition and spin-coating PbS QDs on the surface. Then, we used a low-temperature electrical transport measurement system to study the electrical transport properties of the heterostructure under different temperature, gate voltage, and light conditions and compared them with bare graphene samples. The results indicated that the QD/graphene samples exhibited higher resistance than graphene alone, with both resistances slightly increasing with temperature. The QD/graphene samples exhibited significant hole doping, with conductivity increasing from 0.0002 Ω-1 to 0.0007 Ω-1 under gate voltage modulation. As the temperature increased from 5 K to 300 K, hole mobility decreased from 1200 cm2V-1s-1 to 400 cm2V-1s-1 and electron mobility decreased from 800 cm2V-1s-1 to 200 cm2V-1s-1. Infrared illumination reduced resistance, thereby enhancing conductivity, with a resistance change of about 0.4%/mW at a gate voltage of 125 V, demonstrating the potential of these heterostructures for infrared photodetector applications. These findings offer significant insights into the charge transport mechanisms in low-dimensional materials, paving the way for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Project description:During the last decades, there has been growing interest in using therapeutic messager RNA (mRNA) together with drug delivery systems. Naked, unformulated mRNA is, however, unable to cross the cell membrane and is susceptible to degradation. Here we use graphene quantum dots (GQDs) functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a novel mRNA delivery system. Our results show that these modified GQDs can be used to deliver intact and functional mRNA to Huh-7 hepatocarcinoma cells at low doses and, that the GQDs are not toxic, although cellular toxicity is a problem for these first-generation modified particles. Functionalized GQDs represent a potentially interesting delivery system that is easy to manufacture, stable and effective.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (QDs) are intensively studied as platforms for the next generation of quantum electronic devices. Fine tuning of the transport properties in monolayer graphene QDs, in particular with respect to the independent modulation of the tunnel barrier transparencies, remains challenging and is typically addressed using electrostatic gating. We investigate charge transport in back-gated graphene mechanical break junctions and reveal Coulomb blockade physics characteristic of a single, high-quality QD when a nanogap is opened in a graphene constriction. By mechanically controlling the distance across the newly formed graphene nanogap, we achieve reversible tunability of the tunnel coupling to the drain electrode by 5 orders of magnitude, while keeping the source-QD tunnel coupling constant. The break junction device can therefore become a powerful platform to study the physical parameters that are crucial to the development of future graphene-based devices, including energy converters and quantum calorimeters.
