Black carbon health impacts in the Indo-Gangetic plain: Exposures, risks, and mitigation.

ABSTRACT: A large discrepancy between simulated and observed black carbon (BC) surface concentrations over the densely populated Indo-Gangetic plain (IGP) has so far limited our ability to assess the magnitude of BC health impacts in terms of population exposure, morbidity, and mortality. We evaluate these impacts using an integrated modeling framework, including successfully predicted BC concentrations. Population exposure to BC is notable, with more than 60 million people identified as living in hotspots of BC concentration (wintertime mean, >20 μg m^-3). The attributable fraction of the total cardiovascular disease mortality (CVM) burden to BC exposures is 62% for the megacity. The semiurban area comprised about 49% of the total BC-attributable CVM burden over the IGP. More than 400,000 lives can potentially be saved from CVM annually by implementing prioritized emission reduction from the combustion of domestic biofuel in the semiurban area, diesel oil in transportation, and coal in thermal power plant and brick kiln industries in megacities.

Project description:Fog supports an increase in airborne microbial loading by providing water with nutrients and protecting it from harmful incoming solar radiation. To improve our present understanding of fog-induced alteration in an atmospheric microbial community, a study was conducted during 1 to 14 January 2021 for continuous investigation of airborne bacteria over a rural site, Arthauli (25.95°N, 85.10°E), in central Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) in India. An increase of 36% ± 0.4% in airborne bacterial loading was noticed under fog versus prefog conditions, and a decrease of 48% ± 0.4% was noticed under the postfog condition. Airborne bacterial loading had a strong correlation with RH (R2 = 0.56; P < 0.05), temperature (R2 = -0.55, P < 0.05), and wind speed (R2 = -0.52, P < 0.05). Unique types of bacteria, representing about 29% of the whole community, were detected only under foggy conditions, likely by a continuous supply of nutrients and water from a cold, calm, and humid atmosphere. As a result, no significant diurnal variation of bacterial loading was noticed on a foggy day, with a higher daily mean concentration of about (8.4 ± 1.7) × 105 cells · m-3 than that on a typical winter day [(6.3 ± 3.8) × 105 cells · m-3]. A typical winter day experienced about a 60% decrease in bacterial loading in the afternoon in comparison to that in the morning. A 3-day back-trajectory analysis suggests a slow movement of airmass along with the wind blowing from west to central IGP. Fog pauses wind movement, which reduces continuous transportation of urban sources while increasing airborne bacteria from local sources. The abundances of Gp6 (14.8% ± 8.6%), Anaeromyxobacter (7.1% ± 2.8%), and Gp7 (6.8 ± 2.6%) have been observed to increase due to occurrences of fog over central IGP. IMPORTANCE Fog was investigated in the present study as a cause of alteration in the airborne microbial community. Occurrences of fog were responsible for an increase in airborne microbial loading (36%) over central IGP in India due to the easy availability of nutrients and water in the air and dimming of harmful solar radiation. More than 90% of unique bacteria were detected under fog (64%) and postfog (28%) conditions. A few bacteria, like Gp18 (0.5% ± 0.3%), Alicyclobacillus (0.5% ± 0.1%), Sinomonas (0.4% ± 0.2%), and Phenylobacterium (0.4% ± 0.2%), were detected only under foggy conditions. A strong correlation between meteorological parameters and bacterial loading was found in the current research work. The present study provides additional support toward a new direction in interdisciplinary science for the detailed investigations of the effects of meteorological conditions on airborne bacteria and their implications for society.

Project description:Rice-based cropping systems are the most energy-intensive production systems in South Asia. Sustainability of the rice-based cropping systems is nowadays questioned with declining natural resource base, soil degradation, environmental pollution, and declining factor productivity. As a consequence, the search for energy and resource conservation agro-techniques is increasing for sustainable and cleaner production. Conservation agriculture (CA) practices have been recommended for resource conservation, soil health restoration and sustaining crop productivity. The present study aimed to assess the different CA modules in rice-based cropping systems for energy conservation, energy productivity, and to define energy-economic relations. A field experiment consisted of four different tillage-based crop establishment practices (puddled-transplanted rice followed by (fb) conventional-till maize/wheat (CTTPR-CT), non-puddled transplanted rice fb zero-till maize/wheat (NPTPR-ZT), zero-till transplanted rice fb zero-till maize/wheat (ZTTPR-ZT), zero-till direct-seeded rice fb zero-till maize/wheat (ZTDSR-ZT)), with two residue management treatments (residue removal, residue retention) in rice-wheat and rice-maize rotations were evaluated for energy budgeting and energy-economic relations. Conservation-tillage treatments (NPTPR-ZT, ZTTPR-ZT, and ZTDSR-ZT) reduced the energy requirements over conventional tillage treatments, with the greater reduction in ZTTPR-ZT and ZTDSR-ZT treatments. Savings of energy in conservation-tillage treatments were attributed to reduced energy use in land preparation (69-100%) and irrigation (23-27%), which consumed a large amount of fuel energy. Conservation-tillage treatments increased grain and straw/stover yields of crops, eventually increased the output energy (6-16%), net energy (14-26%), energy ratio (25-33%), and energy productivity (23-34%) as compared with CTTPR-CT. For these energy parameters, the treatment order was ZTDSR-ZT ≥ ZTTPR-ZT > NPTPR-ZT > CTTPR-CT (p < 0.05). Crop residue retention reduced net energy, energy ratio, and energy productivity when compared with residue removal. Our results of energy-economic relations favored the "conservative hypothesis," which envisages that energy and monetary investments are not essentially the determinants of crop productivity. Thus, zero tillage-based crop establishments (ZTTPR-ZT, ZTDSR-ZT) in rice-based production systems could be the sustainable alternative to conventional tillage-based agriculture (CTTPR-CT) as they conserved non-renewable energy sources, reduced water requirement, and increased crop productivity.
