Project description:As one of the simplest polyols with chemical properties of alcohol, ethylene glycol is considered as a renewable energy source and a model fuel for pyrolysis oil. In this work, autoignition characteristics of ethylene glycol have been investigated behind reflected shock waves. Experiments were conducted at pressures of 2, 5, and 10 atm, equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0, and temperatures ranging from approximately 1200 to 1600 K. The fuel concentration was also varied. Results show that the ignition delay time increases with decreasing the pressure or fuel concentration. A strong positive dependence upon the equivalence ratio was found. A quantitative relationship has been yielded by the regression analysis of the experimental data. Simulations were carried out using chemical kinetic mechanisms available in the literature to assess the reliability of mechanism. Reaction pathway and sensitivity analysis confirmed the importance of H-abstraction reactions in ethylene glycol oxidation process. Finally, a comparison between ethylene glycol and ethanol ignition was conducted. Ethylene glycol ignites faster than ethanol because of the early accumulation of H and OH radicals in the oxidation of ethylene glycol.

Project description:Cyclohexene is an important intermediate during the combustion process of hydrocarbon and oxygenated fuels. In view of the lack of study on the combustion of cyclohexene in air, an experimental and modeling study is performed to investigate the chemistry of cyclohexene-air mixtures under a wide temperature range. The shock tube experiments are conducted at pressures of 2 and 10 atm with equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 to determine the ignition delay times. The ignition data under 10 atm cover a wide temperature range varying from a low temperature of 770 K to a high temperature of 1222 K. No typical negative-temperature-coefficient is observed, but the ignition at low temperatures is shorter than the extrapolation at high temperatures. A detailed kinetic model of cyclohexene oxidation is proposed based on the low temperature mechanism of 1,3-cyclohexadiene and the existing high temperature mechanism of cyclohexene. The developed model reproduces the ignition delay times in air well, but it over predicts the ignition delays in argon conditions at higher temperatures. Sensitivity analyses under different temperatures and equivalence ratios are carried out to identify the key reactions affecting ignition. The reactions of H + O2 = O + OH and hydrogen abstraction reaction of cyclohexene with oxygen (CYHEXEN + O2 = CYHEXEN-3J + HO2) explain the change of ignition delay time of cyclohexene with equivalence ratios. Flux analysis gives the change of main reaction pathways under wide temperatures and different pressures. The retro-Diels-Alder reaction as the most important consumption channel of cyclohexene at the pressure of 2 atm and temperature of 1350 K is greatly suppressed when the pressure is increased to 10 atm, while the hydrogen abstraction reaction becomes the main consumption channel of cyclohexene at the high pressure. The proposed kinetic model for cyclohexene oxidation can be used to develop models of hydrocarbon and oxygenated fuels.

Project description:Coalbed methane represents an important kind of natural gas resource in many countries. However, the low-concentration property of coalbed methane limits its applications. To gain insight into the combustion kinetics of coalbed methane and facilitate its combustion utilization, this work reports an experimental and kinetic simulation study on the autoignition properties of methane at ultra-lean and lean conditions. A shock-tube (ST) facility is used for ignition delay time (IDT) measurements with equivalence ratios at 0.5, 0.1, and 0.05 with pressure at 2 and 10 bar under the temperature ranging from 1320 to 1850 K. The measured IDTs can be correlated into a general Arrhenius expression, and the equivalence ratio effect on IDTs is then analyzed. Seven detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms are employed to predict the IDTs and statistical error indicators are used to evaluate their performance. Detailed kinetic analysis via sensitivity and reaction path analysis is performed to uncover the kinetic differences among the seven mechanisms. It is shown that some of the reaction paths only exist in the NUIGMech1.3 mechanism, while the other detailed mechanisms do not consider them. Reaction path analysis indicates that the reactions related to O2, OH and O species become more important compared to the reactions involving CH3 and H radicals as the equivalence ratio decreases from lean to ultra-lean conditions. Detailed chemical kinetics analysis is also conducted to demonstrate the uncertainty of key reactions. The present work should be valuable to gain insight into the methane ignition characteristics and to facilitate kinetic mechanism optimization of methane combustion.

Project description:The experimental study of the oxidation of cyclohexane has been performed in a jet-stirred reactor at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1100 K (low- and intermediate temperature zones including the negative temperature-coefficient area), at a residence time of 2 s and for dilute mixtures with equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2. Experiments were carried out at quasi-atmospheric pressure (1.07 bar). The fuel and reaction product mole fractions were measured using online gas chromatography. A total of 34 reaction products have been detected and quantified in this study. Typical reaction products formed in the low-temperature oxidation of cyclohexane include cyclic ethers (1,2-epoxycyclohexane and 1,4-epoxycyclohexane), 5-hexenal (formed from the rapid decomposition of 1,3-epoxycyclohexane), cyclohexanone, and cyclohexene, as well as benzene and phenol. Cyclohexane displays high low-temperature reactivity with well-marked negative temperature-coefficient (NTC) behavior at equivalence ratios 0.5 and 1. The fuel-rich system (ϕ = 2) is much less reactive in the same region and exhibits no NTC. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first jet-stirred reactor study to report NTC in cyclohexane oxidation. Laminar burning velocities were also measured by the heated burner method at initial gas temperatures of 298, 358, and 398 K and at 1 atm. The laminar burning velocity values peak at ϕ = 1.1 and are measured as 40 and 63.1 cm/s for Ti = 298 and 398 K, respectively. An updated detailed chemical kinetic model including low-temperature pathways was used to simulate the present (jet-stirred reactor and laminar burning velocity) and literature experimental (laminar burning velocity, rapid compression machine, and shock tube ignition delay times) data. Reasonable agreement is observed with most of the products observed in our reactor, as well as the literature experimental data considered in this paper.

Project description:An experimental ignition delay time study for the promising biofuel 2-methyl furan (2MF) was performed at equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 for mixtures of 1% fuel in argon in the temperature range 1200-1800 K at atmospheric pressure. Laminar burning velocities were determined using the heat-flux method for mixtures of 2MF in air at equivalence ratios of 0.55-1.65, initial temperatures of 298-398 K and atmospheric pressure. A detailed chemical kinetic mechanism consisting of 2059 reactions and 391 species has been constructed to describe the oxidation of 2MF and is used to simulate experiment. Accurate reproduction of the experimental data has been obtained over all conditions with the developed mechanism. Rate of production and sensitivity analyses have been carried out to identify important consumption pathways of the fuel and key kinetic parameters under these conditions. The reactions of hydrogen atom with the fuel are highlighted as important under all experimental conditions studied, with abstraction by the hydrogen atom promoting reactivity and hydrogen atom addition to the furan ring inhibiting reactivity. This work, to the authors knowledge, is the first to combine theoretical and experimental work to describe the oxidation of any of the alkylated furans. The mechanism developed herein to describe 2MF combustion should also function as a sub-mechanism to describe the oxidation of 2,5-dimethyl furan whilst also providing key insights into the oxidation of this similar biofuel candidate.

Project description:n-Pentanol has emerged as a promising substitute for fossil fuels due to its potential in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This work presents a reduced combustion mechanism for modeling high-temperature ignition (T > 1000 K) and flames for n-pentanol/air mixtures. The model comprises only 64 species and 282 chemical reactions. As we know, this is the first comprehensive study to include all available experimental data for these phenomena and this specific fuel/oxidizer mixture, reported in the literature. Our approach involves coupling a detailed submechanism for n-pentanol to the San Diego mechanism, a reduced scheme for C1-C4 hydrocarbons, followed by a systematic reduction process, mainly using sensitivity analysis and steady-state approximation. We quantitatively assessed the agreement between experimental data and simulation results using deviation or error indicators along with graphical comparisons. Remarkably, the ignition delay times and flame speeds calculated using the reduced kinetic model exhibit a high agreement with the experimental data reported in the literature.

Project description:We present a new integrated experimental and modeling effort that assesses the intrinsic sensitivity of energetic materials based on their reaction rates. The High Explosive Initiation Time (HEIT) experiment has been developed to provide a rapid assessment of the high-temperature reaction kinetics for the chemical decomposition of explosive materials. This effort is supported theoretically by quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations that depict how different explosives can have vastly different adiabatic induction times at the same temperature. In this work, the ranking of explosive initiation properties between the HEIT experiment and QMD simulations is identical for six different energetic materials, even though they contain a variety of functional groups. We have also determined that the Arrhenius kinetics obtained by QMD simulations for homogeneous explosions connect remarkably well with those obtained from much longer duration one-dimensional time-to-explosion (ODTX) measurements. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations have been developed to model the coupled heat transport and chemistry of the HEIT experiment to explicitly connect the experimental results with the Arrhenius rates for homogeneous explosions. These results confirm that ignition in the HEIT experiment is heterogeneous, where reactions start at the needle wall and propagate inward at a rate controlled by the thermal diffusivity and energy release. Overall, this work provides the first cohesive experimental and first-principles modeling effort to assess reaction kinetics of explosive chemical decomposition in the subshock regime and will be useful in predictive models needed for safety assessments.

Project description:After long-term oxidation and energy storage, broken coal body borehole walls and drainage shaft walls may cause spontaneous combustion during gas extraction. The high-temperature thermal shock caused by the spontaneous combustion of coal incurs thermal damage on adjacent coal, which, in turn, causes changes in the mechanical properties of the coal. However, only a few studies have been conducted in this context, which has limited our understanding of the thermal damage characteristics of coal bodies in such situations. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the correlation between the crack evolution law and the mechanical properties of coal bodies at different temperatures (50-300°C) using heat-force loading considering Ping Mei No. 10 coal mine as the research object. The results suggest that the coal body experiences a large amount of visible damage, and becomes increasingly complex. At 50-300°C, some indexes (such as longitudinal wave velocity, Poisson's ratio, compressive strength, elastic modulus, impact energy index, and pre-peak strain) are positively correlated with temperature. In addition, the dynamic failure time and temperature show a negative correlation, and the overall change slope is small. The relationship between each index and temperature at 200-300°C is opposite to that at 50-200°C, and the overall change slope is larger. Moreover, when the oxidation temperature exceeds 200°C, the destruction of the coal body changes from elastic brittleness to ductility-plasticity. High-temperature oxidation incurs irreversible thermal damage of coal. Hence, it is necessary to focus on the changes in mechanical properties of coal after a spontaneous combustion process is extinguished.

Project description:The minichromosome maintenance (MCM) complex is the replicative helicase responsible for unwinding DNA during archaeal and eukaryal genome replication. To mimic long helicase events in the cell, a high-temperature single-molecule assay was designed to quantitatively measure long-range DNA unwinding of individual DNA helicases from the archaeons Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus (Mth) and Thermococcus sp. 9°N (9°N). Mth encodes a single MCM homolog while 9°N encodes three helicases. 9°N MCM3, the proposed replicative helicase, unwinds DNA at a faster rate compared to 9°N MCM2 and to Mth MCM. However, all three MCM proteins have similar processivities. The implications of these observations for DNA replication in archaea and the differences and similarities among helicases from different microorganisms are discussed. Development of the high-temperature single-molecule assay establishes a system to comprehensively study thermophilic replisomes and evolutionary links between archaeal, eukaryal, and bacterial replication systems.
