The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Elatostema stewardii Merr. (Urticaceae).

ABSTRACT: Elatostema stewardii is an important medicinal plant endemic to China. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of E. stewardii was sequenced and assembled using next-generation sequencing technology. The complete chloroplast genome length of E. stewardii was 150,263 bp, including two inverted repeats (IRs) of 24,681 bp, which are separated by LSC and SSC of 83,791 bp and 17,110 bp, respectively. A total of 129 genes were included in the genome, consisting 85 protein-coding genes, eight rRNA genes, and 36 tRNA genes, the overall GC content of this genome was 36.3%. There are few studies on the genus Elatostema of Urticaceae, this chloroplast genome sequence will provide useful data for further research on solving the generic and familial relationships in Urticaceae.

Project description:The complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Procris crenata C.B.Rob was reported. The cp genome was 154,124 bp in length and contained two inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,626 bp, which were separated by large single-copy and small single-copy of 84,599 bp and 18,273 bp, respectively. The GC content was 36.5%. A total of 113 functional genes were encoded, comprising 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. This is the first reported plastid genome in Procris (Urticaceae), which will be useful data for resolving the relationship within the family.

In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of A. trifoliatus was assembled and annotated by high-throughput sequencing. The total chloroplast genome size of A. trifoliatus was 156,716 bp, containing a large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,672 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,174 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions of 25,935 bp. A total of 134 genes were predicted in the chloroplast genome of A. trifoliatus, including 89 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that A. trifoliatus was closely related to Eleutherococcus gracilistylus.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr. 'Guanximiyou'.

Project description:Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr. 'Guanximiyou' is a major citrus tree largely cultivated in China. A previous study has reported the complete chloroplast genome of C. maxima, but there may be some differences between wild species and cultivating variety. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of 'Guanximiyou' pummelo was characterized using BGISEQ-500 sequencing. The chloroplast genome was 160,186 bp in length and separated into four distinct regions such as large single-copy region (87,939 bp), small single-copy region (18,395 bp), and a pair of inverted repeat regions (26,926 bp). The genome contained a total of 109 genes including 79 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic maximum-likelihood analysis revealed that 'Guanximiyou' pummelo was clustered with other Rutaceae species with high bootstrap values.

The first complete chloroplast genome sequence of Pentaphragma spicatum Merr. (Pentaphragmataceae) and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:Pentaphragma spicatum Merr. is an endemic wild edible plant of China belonging to the Pentaphragmataceae family. It is widely consumed by Shangsi County resident in Guangxi Fangchenggang. Initially, Pentaphragma was classified as a genus within the Campanulaceae family, but, later it was treated as part of the Pentaphragmataceae family. However, the chloroplast genome of Pentaphragmataceae has not yet been reported. In this study, we sequenced the first complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. spicatum from Guangxi, China. The whole genome was 154,229 bp in length, consisting of a pair of inverted repeats (IR each 25,572 bp), a large single-copy region (LSC 84,884 bp), and a small single-copy region (SSC 18,201 bp). The complete genome contained 129 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 34 tRNA, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the whole genome was 37.71%. Based on a maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis, it has been determined that P. spicatum is not phylogenetically related to Campanulaceae and supports the decision to classify it as a separate family, Pentaphragmataceae. The complete chloroplast genome of P. spicatum will help enhance and integrate the existing genome data of Asterales. This will provide insights into the phylogenetic relationship within Campanulaceae.

Complete chloroplast genome sequences of two Boehmeria species (Urticaceae).

Project description:Boehmeria is an important genus; however, no plastid genome has been reported to date. Here we report the complete chloroplast genomes for two Boehmeria species. The chloroplast genomes of Boehmeria umbrosa and Boehmeria spicata were found to be 170920 bp and 170958 in length, respectively, and the GC contents were 35.5 and 35.3%, respectively. The sequences of each species contained 112 unique genes, including 30 tRNA, 4 rRNA, and 78 protein-coding genes. This is the first report of cp genomes for Boehmeria, and will be useful for identifying molecular markers with which to address taxonomic problems in the genus.

Biogeographic patterns and evolutionary history of Elatostema (Urticaceae).

Project description:BackgroundThe paleotropics, home to half of Earth's rainforests, exhibit remarkable biodiversity and complex biogeographic patterns. Understanding the intercontinental distribution of plant taxa between Africa and Asia in this region is crucial for resolving longstanding debates on plant evolution and dispersal mechanisms. This study investigates the genus Elatostema, a widely distributed taxon found in subtropical and tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia, aiming to elucidate the factors shaping its modern tropical disjunctions and evolutionary history.ResultUsing molecular dating and ancestral area reconstruction, we reconstructed the historical biogeographic pattern of Elatostema. Our results indicated that the genus originated in tropical Asia during the Eocene, likely associated with boreotropical floras. The evolutionary history of Elatostema involved multiple intercontinental dispersal events, including two independent colonizations of Africa from Asia. Diversification within the core Elatostema clade was primarily driven by events in Asia and Oceania, with key factors contributing to this diversification including reciprocal dispersal between Malesia and Australasia, eastward island hopping and karstification in China. Furthermore, a geographical phylogenetic structure was observed within the core Elatostema clade, possibly due to limited seed and pollen dispersal.ConclusionsThe present study provides the first comprehensive insights into the biogeography and evolution of Elatostema. The presence of numerous narrowly distributed endemics, relatively few widespread species, and geographical structures within Elatostema suggest that limited gene flow may be a crucial factor in speciation and evolutionary processes, similar to other species-rich genera.

Project description:Aristolochia hainanensis Merr. 1922, a well-known Chinese medicinal plant, is distributed in Hainan Province and Guangxi Province, China. In the current study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genome of A. hainanensis. The complete plastome genome was 159,764 bp in length, with a GC content of 38.8%, showing a typical quadripartite organization. The genome contained a large single-copy (LSC) of 89,134 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) of 19,306 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,662 bp. A total of 113 genes were annotated, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNAs, and four rRNAs. The trnK-UUU gene contained the longest intron (2644 bp). The topology of the maximum-likelihood tree supported a close relationship between A. hainanensis and A. kwangsiensis.

Two new species of Elatostema (Urticaceae) from southeast Yunnan, China.

Project description:Elatostema pleiophlebium and Elatostema malipoense, two endemic species from southeast Yunnan of China, are described and illustrated. Their diagnostic characters, description and relationship with morphologically similar species are also given. Elatostema pleiophlebium is easily recognised by its glabrous stem and leaf blade, and its longitudinally 1-ribbed outer staminate bracts. Elatostema malipoense is morphologically distinct for its tuberculate achene and pistillate receptacle which is puberulous. Both new species are known only from their type localities, and they are proposed to be classified as critically endangered.
