Project description:Microparticles containing substantial amounts of radiocesium collected from the ground in Fukushima were investigated mainly by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray microanalysis with scanning TEM (STEM). Particles of around 2??m in diameter are basically silicate glass containing Fe and Zn as transition metals, Cs, Rb and K as alkali ions, and Sn as substantial elements. These elements are homogeneously distributed in the glass except Cs which has a concentration gradient, increasing from center to surface. Nano-sized crystallites such as copper- zinc- and molybdenum sulfide, and silver telluride were found inside the microparticles, which probably resulted from the segregation of the silicate and sulfide (telluride) during molten-stage. An alkali-depleted layer of ca. 0.2??m thick exists at the outer side of the particle collected from cedar leaves 8 months after the nuclear accident, suggesting gradual leaching of radiocesium from the microparticles in the natural environment.

Project description:The Fukushima nuclear accident released radioactive materials into the environment over the entire Northern Hemisphere in March 2011, and the Japanese government is spending large amounts of money to clean up the contaminated residential areas and agricultural fields. However, we still do not know the exact physical and chemical properties of the radioactive materials. This study directly observed spherical Cs-bearing particles emitted during a relatively early stage (March 14-15) of the accident. In contrast to the Cs-bearing radioactive materials that are currently assumed, these particles are larger, contain Fe, Zn, and Cs, and are water insoluble. Our simulation indicates that the spherical Cs-bearing particles mainly fell onto the ground by dry deposition. The finding of the spherical Cs particles will be a key to understand the processes of the accident and to accurately evaluate the health impacts and the residence time in the environment.

Project description:A part of radiocesium emitted during the Fukushima nuclear accident was incorporated in glassy water-resistant microparticles, called Type-A particles, which are spherical with?~?0.1 to 10 µm diameter and?~?10-2 to 102 Bq cesium-137 (137Cs) radioactivity; they were emitted from Unit 2 or 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Meanwhile, Type-B particles, having various shapes, 50-400 µm diameter, and 101-104 Bq 137Cs radioactivity, were emitted from Unit 1. The chemical properties of these radioactive particles have been reported in detail, but previous studies investigated only a small number of particles, especially Type-B particles. We tried to understand radioactive particles systematically by analyzing a large number of particles. Micro-X-ray computed tomography combined with X-ray fluorescence analysis revealed the presence of many voids and iron-rich part within Type-B particles. The 137Cs concentration (Bq mm-3) of Type-A particles was?~?10,000 times higher than that of Type-B particles. Among the Type-B particles, the spherical ones had higher concentration of volatile elements than the non-spherical ones. These differences suggested that Type-A particles were formed through gas condensation, whereas Type-B particles were formed through melt solidification. These findings might contribute to the safe decommissioning of reactors and environmental impact assessment.

Project description:Cesium adsorption/desorption experiments for various clay minerals, considering actual contamination conditions in Fukushima, were conducted using the (137)Cs radioisotope and an autoradiography using imaging plates (IPs). A 50??l solution containing 0.185?~?1.85?Bq of (137)Cs (10(-11)?~?10(-9?)molL(-1) of (137)Cs) was dropped onto a substrate where various mineral particles were arranged. It was found that partially-vermiculitized biotite, which is termed "weathered biotite" (WB) in this study, from Fukushima sorbed (137)Cs far more than the other clay minerals (fresh biotite, illite, smectite, kaolinite, halloysite, allophane, imogolite) on the same substrate. When WB was absent on the substrate, the amount of (137)Cs sorbed to the other clay minerals was considerably increased, implying that selective sorption to WB caused depletion of radiocesium in the solution and less sorption to the coexisting minerals. Cs-sorption to WB continued for about one day, whereas that to ferruginous smectite was completed within one hour. The sorbed (137)Cs in WB was hardly leached with hydrochloric acid at pH 1, particularly in samples with a longer sorption time. The presence/absence of WB sorbing radiocesium is a key factor affecting the dynamics and fate of radiocesium in Fukushima.

Project description:The largest concern on the cesium-137 ((137)Cs) deposition and its soil contamination due to the emission from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) showed up after a massive quake on March 11, 2011. Cesium-137 ((137)Cs) with a half-life of 30.1 y causes the largest concerns because of its deleterious effect on agriculture and stock farming, and, thus, human life for decades. Removal of (137)Cs contaminated soils or land use limitations in areas where removal is not possible is, therefore, an urgent issue. A challenge lies in the fact that estimates of (137)Cs emissions from the Fukushima NPP are extremely uncertain, therefore, the distribution of (137)Cs in the environment is poorly constrained. Here, we estimate total (137)Cs deposition by integrating daily observations of (137)Cs deposition in each prefecture in Japan with relative deposition distribution patterns from a Lagrangian particle dispersion model, FLEXPART. We show that (137)Cs strongly contaminated the soils in large areas of eastern and northeastern Japan, whereas western Japan was sheltered by mountain ranges. The soils around Fukushima NPP and neighboring prefectures have been extensively contaminated with depositions of more than 100,000 and 10,000 MBq km(-2), respectively. Total (137)Cs depositions over two domains: (i) the Japan Islands and the surrounding ocean (130-150?°E and 30-46?°N) and, (ii) the Japan Islands, were estimated to be approximately 6.7 and 1.3 PBq, [corrected] respectively.We hope our (137)Cs deposition maps will help to coordinate decontamination efforts and plan regulatory measures in Japan.

Project description:This paper focuses on an overview of radioactive cesium 137 (quasi-Cs137 included Cs134) contamination of freshwater fish in Fukushima and eastern Japan based on the data published by the Fisheries Agency of the Japanese Government in 2011. In the area north and west of the Fukushima Nuclear plant, freshwater fish have been highly contaminated. For example, the mean of active cesium (quasi-Cs137) contamination of Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) is 2,657 Bq/kg at Mano River, 20-40 km north-west from the plant. Bioaccumulation is observed in the Agano river basin in Aizu sub-region, 70-150 km west from the plant. The active cesium (quasi-Cs137) contamination of carnivorous Salmondae is around 2 times higher than herbivorous Ayu. The extent of active cesium (quasi-Cs137) contamination of Ayu is observed in the entire eastern Japan. The some level of the contamination is recognized even in Shizuoka prefecture, 400 km south-west from the plant.

Project description:Kaolinite functionalized by the μ-oxo Fe3+-phenanthroline complex (Fe+3Phen) was selected to test its ability to efficiently remove and store gaseous heptanethiol (HPT). Spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, and thermal analysis coupled with evolved gas mass spectrometry were employed to characterize the material before and after the exposure to the gas and to define the adsorption process. The amount of HPT trapped by the functionalized kaolinite after 60 days is 0.10940 moles per 100 g of kaolinite which, considering the amount of adsorbed Fe+3Phen (0.00114 moles per 100 g of kaolinite), means a thiol/Fe3+Phen molar ratio of about 100:1, a value much higher than those found in the past for Fe+3Phen functionalized montmorillonite and sepiolite. In addition, the process was found to be efficient also beyond 60 days. This significant removal of the smelly gas was explained by considering a continuous catalytic activity of Fe3+ toward the oxidation of thiol to disulfide.

Project description:The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident released large amounts of radioactive substances into the environment and contaminated the soil of Tohoku and Kanto districts in Japan. Removal of radioactive material from the environment is an urgent problem, and soil purification using plants is being considered. In this study, we investigated the ability of 12 seed plant species and a cyanobacterium to accumulate radioactive material. The plants did not accumulate radioactive material at high levels, but high accumulation was observed in the terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc commune. In Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, N. commune accumulated 415,000 Bq/kg dry weight (134)Cs and 607,000 Bq kg(-1) dry weight (137)Cs. The concentration of cesium in N. commune tended to be high in areas where soil radioactivity was high. A cultivation experiment confirmed that N. commune absorbed radioactive cesium from polluted soil. These data demonstrated that radiological absorption using N. commune might be suitable for decontaminating polluted soil.

Project description:Ethylene-bridged polysilsesquioxane (EBPSQ) was prepared by the sol-gel reaction of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane. The whitish slurry was prepared by mixing EBPSQ and hollow silica particles (HSPs) with a median diameter of 18-65 μm at 80 °C, and it formed a hybrid film by heating at 80 and 120 °C for 1 h at each temperature, then at 200 °C for 20 min. The surface temperatures of EBPSQ films containing 10 wt% and 20 wt% of HSPs (90.2 °C-90.5 °C) were lower than those of EBPSQ films (93.6 °C), when the films on the duralumin plate were heated at 100 °C for 10 min from the bottom of the duralumin plate. The thermal conductivity/heat flux (k/q) obtained from the temperature difference between the surface temperature and bottom temperature of the films and the film thickness also decreased with adding the HSPs. EBPSQ film without HSPs exhibited T 5 d of 258 °C and T 10 d of 275 °C. However, EBPSQ film containing 20 wt% of HSPs exhibited high thermal stability, and T 5 d and T 10 d were 299 °C and 315 °C, respectively. Interestingly, T 5 d and T 10 d of the hybrid films increased with an increase in the number of HSPs. Overall, it was shown that HSPs could improve the thermal insulation properties and thermal stability.

Project description:Radiocaesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) composed of silicate glass were released by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. Since CsMPs contain a high concentration of radiocaesium, their dynamics and fate in the environment are urgent issues to be investigated. Here, we show that CsMPs are dissolved by weathering in the environment and that their radioactivity is more rapidly decreased by dissolution than the physical decay of radiocaesium. We conducted dissolution experiments with CsMPs in pure water that absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere and in artificial seawater at several temperatures. The dissolution progress was monitored by the decrease in the 137Cs radioactivity in CsMPs, and the dissolution rate was estimated. The activation energy for the dissolution of CsMPs was estimated to be 65 and 88?kJ/mol and the dissolution rate at 13?°C (approximate annual mean temperature in Fukushima City) was 0.014 and 0.140 ?m/y for pure water and seawater, respectively, assuming that radiocaesium is uniformly distributed in spherical CsMPs. The shapes of the CsMPs dissolved in pure water were considerably altered, suggesting that the dissolution proceeded without maintaining the geometry. Tin oxide and iron oxide nanoparticulates formed on the surfaces. Such features were similar to those observed in CsMPs recently collected in Fukushima Prefecture, indicating that weathering dissolution of CsMPs is also occurring in the environment. For the CsMPs dissolved in seawater, a crust of secondary Mg- and Fe-rich minerals was formed, and the glass matrix inside the crust decreased, creating space between the crust and the glass matrix.
