Functioning of the EROS-R Scale in a Clinical Sample of Psychiatric Patients: New Psychometric Evidence from the Classical Test Theory and the Item Response Theory.

ABSTRACT: Reliable and valid assessment instruments that can be applied briefly and easily in clinical and outpatient settings that provide information about the sources of reinforcement that the patient finds in his life are especially relevant in therapy. The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Environmental Reward Observation Scale (EROS-R) in a sample of psychiatric patients. A sample of 228 psychiatric patients of both sexes (56.1% men and 43.9% women) aged between 18 and 70 years was selected. Along with the EROS-R, other instruments were administered to assess depression and anxiety. The results show that the scale fits a unidimensional model, presenting adequate fit indices (RMSEA = 0.077 (IC 90% 0.055-0.100); SRMR = 0.048; CFI = 0.98; TLI = 0.98). It was also shown that the degree of reward provided by the environment (EROS-R) correlates negatively with the level of depression (ρ = -0.54; p < 0.01) and anxiety (ρ = -0.34; p < 0.01). From the IRT perspective, all the items present adequate discrimination indices, where item 4 is the most precise indicator to measure the degree of environmental reward. All this leads us to conclude that the EROS-R is an instrument with robust psychometric guarantees from TCT and IRT's perspectives, making it suitable for use in clinical contexts.

Project description:BackgroundEarly prelingual auditory development (EPLAD) is a fundamental and important process in the speech and language development of infants and toddlers. The Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (ITMAIS) is a widely used measurement tool for EPLAD, however it has not yet undergone a comprehensive psychometric analysis. The aim of this research was to modify and verify the psychometric properties of ITMAIS using a combination of Item Response Theory (IRT) and Classical Test Theory (CTT).MethodsStage 1-1730 children were retrospectively recruited to enable the application of an IRT model, specifically the graded response model, to modify the ITMAIS. Stage 2-another 450 infants and toddlers with normal hearing or permanent hearing loss before auditory intervention were recruited to verify the psychometric properties of the modified ITMAIS (ITMAIS-m) using the CTT method.ResultsUsing the metric of the graded response model, by removing item 2 from the ITMAIS, ITMAIS-m demonstrated discrimination parameters ranging from 3.947 to 5.431, difficulty parameters from - 1.146 to 1.150, item information distributed between 4.798 and 9.259 and a test information score of 48.061. None of the items showed differential item functioning. ITMAIS-m was further verified in Stage 2, showing Cronbach's α of 0.919 and item-total correlations ranging from 0.693 to 0.851. There was good convergent validity of ITMAIS-m with other auditory outcome measure (r = 0.932) and pure tone average thresholds (r ranging from - 0.670 to - 0.909), as well as a high ability to discriminate between different hearing grades (Cohen d ranging from 0.41 to 5.83).ConclusionsThe ITMAIS-m is a reliable and valid tool for evaluating EPLAD in infants and toddlers, which can be efficiently and precisely applied in clinical practice. The combined use of IRT and CTT provides a powerful means to modify psychometrically robust scales aimed at childhood auditory outcome measurements.

Project description:BackgroundThere is currently no dedicated measurement for assessing nursing students' study interest in China. Considering the good reliability, validity, and widespread applicability of the Study Interest Questionnaire-Short Form (SIQ-SF), the objective of this study was to validate its usage among Chinese nursing students.MethodsThe translation and cross-cultural adaptation rigorously followed the modified Brislin model. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using the Chinese version of the SIQ-SF and convenience sampling was employed to select nursing students. The Psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the SIQ-SF was conducted based on Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory.ResultsA total of 1158 participants were included in the analysis. The item-level content validity index (CVI) ranged from 0.9 to 1.0, and the scale-level CVI was 0.98. In the Exploratory factor analysis, three factors with eigenvalues above 1 were identified, accounting for 62.554% of the cumulative variance. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the CMIN\DF was 5.639, the GFI was 0.953, the CFI was 0.902, and the IFI was 0.904. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the Chinese version of the SIQ-SF was 0.70. Thirty-one participants were invited to sign the scale after two weeks. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.784, and that of items ranged from 0.70 to 0.819. The infit MnSQ values ranged between 0.76 and 1.51, and the outfit MnSQ values ranged between 0.72 and 1.76. The point-measure correlation value ranged between 0.30 and 0.68. The item difficulty measures ranged from - 0.66 to 1.44 logit and the individual learning interest estimations ranged from - 4.22 to 4.97 logit. DIF contrast ranged from 0.00 to 0.33 logits, with all p values greater than 0.05.ConclusionsThe Chinese version of the SIQ-SF demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity among Chinese nursing students and could be used to assess nursing students' study interest in China. With the aid of this scale, teachers can gain a better understanding of nursing students' study interests, thereby maximizing their learning effects through appropriate content and methods.
