A Novel Class of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes for Solution-Processable OLEDs.

ABSTRACT: Substitution of the chlorido ligand of cyclometalated [Pt (5-R-1,3-di(2-pyridyl) benzene)Cl] (R = methyl, mesityl, 2-thienyl, or 4-diphenylamino-phenyl) by 4-phenylthiazole-2-thiolate leads to related thiolato complexes, which were fully characterized. Their photophysical properties were determined in degassed dichloromethane solution. The emission color of the novel complexes can be easily tuned by the nature of the substituents on the terdentate ligand, as is the case for the parent chlorido complexes. Their luminescence Quantum Yield is high, with that of the compounds with the 2-thienyl or 4-diphenylamino-phenyl substituents being much higher than that of the related chloride complexes. The platinum complex with the cyclometalated 5-(2-thienyl)-1,3-di(2-pyridyl) benzene was used as the emitter for the fabrication of a yellow solution-processable OLED.

Potential switchable circularly polarized luminescence from chiral cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes.

Project description:A series of chiral cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, [Pt((-)-L1)(Dmpi)]Cl ((-)-1), [Pt((+)-L1)(Dmpi)]Cl ((+)-1), [Pt((-)-L2)(Dmpi)]Cl ((-)-2), [Pt((+)-L2)(Dmpi)]Cl ((+)-2), [Pt3((-)-L2)2(Dmpi)4](ClO4)4 ((-)-3), and [Pt3((+)-L2)2(Dmpi)4](ClO4)4 ((+)-3) [(-)-L1 = (-)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (+)-L1 = (+)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine), (-)-L2 = (-)-1,3-bis(2-(4,5-pinene)pyridyl)benzene, (+)-L2 = (+)-1,3-bis(2-(4,5-pinene)pyridyl)benzene, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide], have been designed and synthesized. In aqueous solutions, (-)-1 and (+)-1 aggregate into one-dimensional helical chain structures through Pt···Pt, π-π, and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. (-)-3 and (+)-3 represent a novel helical structure with Pt-Pt bonds. The formation of helical structures results in enhanced and distinct chiroptical properties as evidenced by circular dichroism spectra. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was observed from the aggregates of (-)-1 and (+)-1 in water, as well as (-)-3 and (+)-3 in dichloromethane. The CPL activity can be switched reversibly (for (-)-1 and (+)-1) or irreversibly (for (-)-3 and (+)-3) by varying the temperature.

Cyclometalated Iminophosphorane Gold(III) and Platinum(II) Complexes. A Highly Permeable Cationic Platinum(II) Compound with Promising Anticancer Properties.

Project description:New organometallic gold(III) and platinum(II) complexes containing iminophosphorane ligands are described. Most of them are more cytotoxic to a number of human cancer cell lines than cisplatin. Cationic Pt(II) derivatives 4 and 5, which differ only in the anion, Hg2Cl6(2-) or PF6(-) respectively, display almost identical IC50 values in the sub-micromolar range (25-335-fold more active than cisplatin on these cell lines). The gold compounds induced mainly caspase-independent cell death, as previously reported for related cycloaurated compounds containing IM ligands. Cycloplatinated compounds 3, 4, and 5 can also activate alternative caspase-independent mechanisms of death. However, at short incubation times cell death seems to be mainly caspase dependent, suggesting that the main mechanism of cell death for these compounds is apoptosis. Mercury-free compound 5 does not interact with plasmid (pBR322) DNA or with calf thymus DNA. Permeability studies of 5 by two different assays, in vitro Caco-2 monolayers and a rat perfusion model, have revealed a high permeability profile for this compound (comparable to that of metoprolol or caffeine) and an estimated oral fraction absorbed of 100%, which potentially makes it a good candidate for oral administration.

Preparation of Cyano-Substituted Tetraphenylethylene Derivatives and Their Applications in Solution-Processable OLEDs.

Project description:Creation of organic luminescent materials with high solid-state efficiency is of vital importance for their applications in optoelectronic fields. Here, a series of AIE luminogens (AIE gens), (Z)-2,3-bis(4-(9,9-bis(6-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)hexyl)-9H-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)-3-phenylacrylonitrile (SFC), and 2,3-bis(4-(9,9-bis(6-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)hexyl)-9H-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)fumaronitrile (DFC), utilizing 2,3,3-triphenylacrylonitrile and 2,3-diphenylfumaronitrile as respective centers, are designed and synthesized by Suzuki coupling reactions with high yields. The cis- and trans-isomers of DFC are also successfully obtained. All of them are thermally stable and show good solubility in common organic solvents. They all emit weakly in solution, but become strong emitters when fabricated into solid films. It is found introduction of one additional cyano group in DFC induced a big red-shift in solid-state emission, owing to its high electron-withdrawing ability. The cis- and trans-DFC show similar photophysical and Cyclic voltammogram (CV) behaviors. Non-doped solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using the three compounds as light-emitting layers are fabricated. SFC gives the best device performance with a maximum luminance of 5201 cd m-2, a maximum current efficiency of 3.67 cd A-1 and a maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of 1.37%. Red-shifted EL spectra are observed for cis- and trans-DFC-based device, and the OLED using trans-DFC as active layer exhibits better performance, which might derive from their different conformation in film state.

Polymorph-Dependent Phosphorescence of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes and Its Relation to Non-covalent Interactions.

Project description:Cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [Pt(ppy)Cl(CNAr)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N; Ar = C6H4-2-I 1, C6H4-4-I 2, C6H3-2-F-4-I 3, and C6H3-2,4-I2 4) bearing ancillary isocyanide ligands were obtained by the bridge-splitting reaction between the dimer [Pt(ppy)(μ-Cl)]2 and 2 equiv any one of the corresponding CNAr. Complex 2 was crystallized in two polymorphic forms, namely, 2 I and 2 II, exhibiting green (emission quantum yield of 0.5%) and orange (emission quantum yield of 12%) phosphorescence, respectively. Structure-directing non-covalent contacts in these polymorphs were verified by a combination of experimental (X-ray diffraction) and theoretical methods (NCIplot analysis, combined electron localization function (ELF), and Bader quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM analysis)). A noticeable difference in the spectrum of non-covalent interactions of 2 I and 2 II is seen in the Pt···Pt interactions in 2 II and absence of these metallophilic contacts in 2 I. The other solid luminophores, namely, 1, 3 I-II, 4, and 4·CHCl3, exhibit green luminescence; their structures include intermolecular C-I···Cl-Pt halogen bonds as the structure-directing interactions. Crystals of 1, 2 I, 3 I, 3 II, 4, and 4·CHCl3 demonstrated a reversible mechanochromic color change achieved by mechanical grinding (green to orange) and solvent adsorption (orange to green).

Chameleonic Photo- and Mechanoluminescence in Pyrazolate-Bridged NHC Cyclometalated Platinum Complexes.

Project description:DFT investigations on the ground (GS) and the first triplet (T1) excited state potential energy surfaces (PES) were performed on a new series of platinum-butterfly complexes, [{Pt(C∧C*)(μ-Rpz)}2] (Rpz: pz, 1; 4-Mepz, 2; 3,5-dmpz, 3; 3,5-dppz, 4), containing a cyclometalated NHC in their wings. The geometries of two close-lying local minima corresponding to butterfly spread conformers, 1s-4s, and butterfly folded ones, 1f-4f, with long and short Pt-Pt separations, respectively, were optimized in the GS and T1 PES. A comparison of the GS and T1 energy profiles revealed that an opposite trend is obtained in the relative stability of folded and spread conformers, the latter being more stabilized in their GS. Small ΔG (s/f) along with small-energy barriers in the GS support the coexistence of both kinds of conformers, which influence the photo- and mechanoluminescence of these complexes. In 5 wt % doped PMMA films in the air, these complexes exhibit intense sky-blue emissions (PLQY: 72.0-85.9%) upon excitation at λ ≤ 380 nm arising from 3IL/MLCT excited states, corresponding to the predominant 1s-4s conformers. Upon excitation at longer wavelengths (up to 450 nm), the minor 1f-4f conformers afford a blue emission as well, with PLQY still significant (40%-60%). In the solid state, the as-prepared powder of 4 exhibits a greenish-blue emission with QY ∼ 29%, mainly due to 3IL/3MLCT excited states of butterfly spread molecules, 4s. Mechanical grinding resulted in an enhanced and yellowish-green emission (QY ∼ 51%) due to the 3MMLCT excited states of butterfly folded molecules, 4f, in such a way that the mechanoluminescence has been associated with an intramolecular structural change induced by mechanical grinding.

Efficient singlet oxygen generation by luminescent 2-(2′-thienyl)pyridyl cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes and their calixarene derivatives.

Project description:Luminescent cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, namely [Pt(Thpy)(PPh3)X]n+ (HThpy = 2-(2′-thienyl)pyridine; X = Cl− (1), n = 0; X = CH3CN (2), pyridine (3), n = 1) and [Pt(Thpy)(HThpy)Y]n+ (Y = Cl− (4), n = 0; Y = pyridine (5), n = 1), exhibit structured emission with peak maximum at ∼556 and 598 nm in degassed acetonitrile and with emission quantum yield and lifetime of up to 0.38 and 26 μs, respectively. These complexes are efficient photosensitizers of singlet oxygen with yields up to >90%. Complex 5 exhibited photocytotoxicity towards cancer cells and fluorescence microscopic images of cells incubated with 5 reveal substantial uptake at the nucleus and mitochondria.

Classical vs. Non-Classical Cyclometalated Pt(II) Complexes.

Project description:Rollover cyclometalated complexes constitute a family of derivatives which differ from classical cyclometalated species in certain aspects. Various potential application fields have been developed for both classes of compounds, which have both similarities and differences. In order to uncover the relationships and distinctions between these two families of compounds, four Pt(II) cyclometalated complexes derived from 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), assumed as prototypical ligands, were compared. For this study, an electron rich isostructural and isoelectronic pair of compounds, [Pt(N^C)Me(PPh3)], and an electron-poorer compound, [Pt(N^C)Cl(PPh3)] were chosen (N^C = ppy or bpy). DFT calculations, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-Vis spectra also helped to shed light into these species. Due to the presence of the more electronegative nitrogen in place of a C-H group, the rollover bpy-H ligand becomes a slightly weaker donor than the classical ppy-H ligand, and hence, generates (slightly) more stable cyclometalated complexes, lower energy frontier molecular orbitals, and electron-poorer platinum centers. On the whole, it was revealed that classical and rollover complexes have overall structural similarity, which contrasts to their somewhat different chemical behavior.

Solubilised bright blue-emitting iridium complexes for solution processed OLEDs.

Project description:Combining a sterically bulky, electron-deficient 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)pyridine (dFMesppy) cyclometalating C∧N ligand with an electron rich, highly rigidified 1,1'-(α,α'-o-xylylene)-2,2'-biimidazole (o-xylbiim) N∧N ligand gives an iridium complex, [Ir(dFMesppy)2(o-xylbiim)](PF6), that achieves extraordinarily bright blue emission (ΦPL = 90%; λmax = 459 nm in MeCN) for a cationic iridium complex. This complex is compared with two reference complexes bearing 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, and solution-processed organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated from these materials.

NIR-II Emission from Cyclometalated Dinuclear Pt(III) Complexes.

Project description:Half-lantern Pt(II) dinuclear complexes [{Pt(C∧Npz)(μ-S∧NR)}2] (HC∧Npz = 1-naphthalen-2-yl-1H-pyrazole; R = H, HS∧N: 2-mercaptopyrimidine 1; R = CF3, HS∧NF: 4-(trifluoromethyl)-2-mercaptopyrimidine 2) were selectively obtained as single isomers with the C∧N groups in an anti-arrangement and rather short metallophilic interactions (dPt-Pt = 2.8684(2) Å for 2). They reacted with haloforms in the air and sunlight to obtain the corresponding oxidized diplatinum(III) derivatives [{Pt(C∧Npz)(μ-S∧NR)X}2] (X = Cl (1-Cl), Br (1-Br), I (1-I, 2-I)). The single-crystal X-ray structures exhibit Pt-Pt distances typical for the existence of a metal-metal bond, which evidence fairly well the influence of the axial ligand (X). The reactions of 1 and 2 with CHI3 in the dark afforded mixtures of [IPt(C∧Npz)(μ-S∧N)2Pt(C∧Npz)CHI2] and 1-I or 2-I, with the former being the major species under an Ar atmosphere, while the reactions of 1 with CHBr3 and CHCl3 need light to occur. These Pt2(III,III) complexes display low-energy absorptions and emissions that strongly depend on the axial ligand. In the solid state, they show a broad NIR emission ranging from 985 to 1070 nm at RT that suffers a hypsochromic shift when cooling down to 77 K. The photoemissive behavior of the dinuclear Pt(II) and Pt(III) systems is disclosed with the aid of density functional theory calculations.
