Diffractive dipolar coupling in non-Bravais plasmonic lattices.

ABSTRACT: Honeycomb plasmonic lattices are paradigmatic examples of non-Bravais lattices. We experimentally measure surface lattice resonances in effectively free-standing honeycomb lattices composed of silver nanospheres. By combining numerical simulations with analytical methods, we analyze the dispersion relation and the near-field properties of these modes along high symmetry trajectories. We find that our results can be interpreted in terms of dipole-only interactions between the two non-equivalent triangular sublattices, which naturally lead to an asymmetric near-field distribution around the nanospheres. We generalize the interaction between the two sublattices to the case of variable adjacent interparticle distance within the unit cell, highlighting symmetry changes and diffraction degeneracy lifting associated to the transition between Bravais and non-Bravais lattices.

Radiative Pumping and Propagation of Plexcitons in Diffractive Plasmonic Crystals.

Project description:Strong coupling between plasmons and excitons leads to the formation of plexcitons: quasiparticles that combine nanoscale energy confinement and pronounced optical nonlinearities. In addition to these localized modes, the enhanced control over the dispersion relation of propagating plexcitons may enable coherent and collective coupling of distant emitters. Here, we experimentally demonstrate strong coupling between carbon nanotube excitons and spatially extended plasmonic modes formed via diffractive coupling of periodically arranged gold nanoparticles (nanodisks, nanorods). Depending on the light-matter composition, the rather long-lived plexcitons (>100 fs) undergo highly directional propagation over 20 μm. Near-field energy distributions calculated with the finite-difference time-domain method fully corroborate our experimental results. The previously demonstrated compatibility of this plexcitonic system with electrical excitation opens the path to the realization of a variety of ultrafast active plasmonic devices, cavity-assisted energy transport and low-power optoelectronic components.

Plasmonic Toroidal Dipolar Response under Radially Polarized Excitation.

Project description:Plasmonic toroidal resonance has attracted growing interests because of its low loss electromagnetic properties and potential high sensitive nanophotonic applications. However, the realization in a metamaterial requires three-dimensional complicated structural design so far. In this paper, we design a simple metal-dielectric-metal (MIM) sandwich nanostructure, which exhibits a strong toroidal dipolar resonance under radially polarized excitation. The toroidal dipole moment as the dominant contribution for the scattering is demonstrated by the mirror-image method and further analyzed by Lagrangian hybridization model. The proposed toroidal configuration also shows a highly tolerant for misalignment between the structure center and the incident light focus. Our study proves the way for the toroidal plasmonic application with the cylindrical vector beams.

Optical Characterization of Plasmonic Indium Lattices Fabricated via Electrochemical Deposition.

Project description:The optical properties of periodic metallic nanoparticle lattices have found many exciting applications. Indium is an emerging plasmonic material that offers to extend the plasmonic applications given by gold and silver from the visible to the ultraviolet spectral range, with applications in imaging, sensing, and lasing. Due to the high vapor pressure/low melting temperature of indium, nanofabrication of ordered metallic nanoparticles is nontrivial. In this work, we show the potential of selective area electrochemical deposition to generate large-area lattices of In pillars for plasmonic applications. We study the optical response of the In lattices by means of angle-dependent extinction measurements demonstrating strong plasmonic surface lattice resonances and a good agreement with numerical simulations. The results open avenues toward high-quality lattices of plasmonic indium nanoparticles and can be extended to other promising plasmonic materials that can be electrochemically grown.

Terahertz spoof plasmonic neural network for diffractive information recognition and processing.

Project description:All-optical diffractive neural networks, as analog artificial intelligence accelerators, leverage parallelism and analog computation for complex data processing. However, their low space transmission efficiency or large spatial dimensions hinder miniaturization and broader application. Here, we propose a terahertz spoof plasmonic neural network on a planar diffractive platform for direct multi-target recognition. Our approach employs a spoof surface plasmon polariton coupler array to construct a diffractive network layer, resulting in a compact, efficient, and easily integrable architecture. We designed three schemes: basis vector classification, multi-user recognition, and MNIST handwritten digit classification. Experimental results reveal that the terahertz spoof plasmonic neural network successfully classifies basis vectors, recognizes multi-user orientation information, and directly processes handwritten digits using a designed input framework comprising a metal grating array, transmitters, and receivers. This work broadens the application of terahertz plasmonic metamaterials, paving the way for terahertz on-chip integration, intelligent communication, and advanced computing systems.

Encoding Mie, plasmonic, and diffractive structural colors in the same pixel.

Project description:We present a 1D reflective multi-level structural color design that incorporates Mie, plasmonic, and diffractive mechanisms in the same pixel. Comprised of a metallodielectric grating made of TiOx nanowires sandwiched between Ag thin film and Ag substrate, the design can exhibit either a Mie resonance or a localized plasmonic resonance depending on the polarization of incident light, resulting in dramatically different color states. Due to the periodicity, the grating also diffracts light, providing an additional color state. Since diffraction can be turned on or off by the degree of coherence of the incoming light, both Mie and plasmonic colors can be modulated using objective lenses with different numerical apertures. Exploiting the different color generating modes, we encode four layers of information in a pixel array, where each layer is unveiled using a different combination of excitation and imaging settings. These results introduce new possibilities for data encryption, anticounterfeiting, and data storage.

Electrical Control of Photoluminescence in 2D Semiconductors Coupled to Plasmonic Lattices.

Project description:Integrating two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors into nanophotonic structures provides a versatile platform for advanced optoelectronic devices. A key challenge in realizing these systems is to achieve control over light emission from these materials. In this work, we demonstrate the modulation of photoluminescence (PL) in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) coupled to surface lattice resonances in metal nanoparticle arrays. We show that both the intensity and the emission angle of light can be tuned by adjusting the lattice parameters. By applying gate electrodes to electrostatically dope the TMDs coupled to plasmonic lattices, we achieve PL intensity switching over 2 orders of magnitude with a low applied voltage. Our results represent an important step toward electrically powered and electrically tunable light sources based on 2D semiconductors.

Exotic vortex lattices in a rotating binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate.

Project description:In the last decade, considerable advances have been made in the investigation of dipolar quantum gases. Previous theoretical investigations of a rotating binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, where only one component possesses dipole moment, were mainly focused on two special orientations of the dipoles: perpendicular or parallel to the plane of motion. Here we study the ground-state and rotational properties of such a system for an arbitrary orientation of the dipoles. We demonstrate the ground-state vortex structures depend strongly on the relative strength between dipolar and contact interactions and the rotation frequency, as well as on the orientation of the dipoles. In the absence of rotation, the tunable dipolar interaction can be used to induce the squeezing or expansion of the cloud, and to derive the phase transition between phase coexistence and separation. Under finite rotation, the system is found to exhibit exotic ground-state vortex configurations, such as kernel-shell, vortex necklace, and compensating stripe vortex structures. We also check the validity of the Feynman relation, and find no significant deviations from it. The obtained results open up alternate ways for the quantum control of dipolar quantum gases.

Vibrational coupling in plasmonic molecules.

Project description:Plasmon hybridization theory, inspired by molecular orbital theory, has been extremely successful in describing the near-field coupling in clusters of plasmonic nanoparticles, also known as plasmonic molecules. However, the vibrational modes of plasmonic molecules have been virtually unexplored. By designing precisely configured plasmonic molecules of varying complexity and probing them at the individual plasmonic molecule level, intramolecular coupling of acoustic modes, mediated by the underlying substrate, is observed. The strength of this coupling can be manipulated through the configuration of the plasmonic molecules. Surprisingly, classical continuum elastic theory fails to account for the experimental trends, which are well described by a simple coupled oscillator picture that assumes the vibrational coupling is mediated by coherent phonons with low energies. These findings provide a route to the systematic optical control of the gigahertz response of metallic nanostructures, opening the door to new optomechanical device strategies.

Dynamic coupling of plasmonic resonators.

Project description:We clarify the nature of dynamic coupling in plasmonic resonators and determine the dynamic coupling coefficient using a simple analytic model. We show that plasmonic resonators, such as subwavelength holes in a metal film which can be treated as bound charge oscillators, couple to each other through the retarded interaction of oscillating screened charges. Our dynamic coupling model offers, for the first time, a quantitative analytic description of the fundamental symmetric and anti-symmetric modes of coupled resonators which agrees with experimental results. Our model also reveals that plasmonic electromagnetically induced transparency arises in any coupled resonators of slightly unequal lengths, as confirmed by a rigorous numerical calculation and experiments.
