Ketosynthases (KSs) catalyse essential carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions in fatty-acid biosynthesis using a two-step, ping-pong reaction mechanism. In Escherichia coli, there are two homodimeric elongating KSs, FabB and FabF, which possess overlapping substrate selectivity.
