Attosecond dynamics of multi-channel single photon ionization.

ABSTRACT: Photoionization of atoms and molecules is one of the fastest processes in nature. The understanding of the ultrafast temporal dynamics of this process often requires the characterization of the different angular momentum channels over a broad energy range. Using a two-photon interferometry technique based on extreme ultraviolet and infrared ultrashort pulses, we measure the phase and amplitude of the individual angular momentum channels as a function of kinetic energy in the outer-shell photoionization of neon. This allows us to unravel the influence of channel interference as well as the effect of the short-range, Coulomb and centrifugal potentials, on the dynamics of the photoionization process.

Anisotropic dynamics of two-photon ionization: An attosecond movie of photoemission.

Project description:Imaging in real time the complete dynamics of a process as fundamental as photoemission has long been out of reach because of the difficulty of combining attosecond temporal resolution with fine spectral and angular resolutions. Here, we achieve full decoding of the intricate angle-dependent dynamics of a photoemission process in helium, spectrally and anisotropically structured by two-photon transitions through intermediate bound states. Using spectrally and angularly resolved attosecond electron interferometry, we characterize the complex-valued transition probability amplitude toward the photoelectron quantum state. This allows reconstructing in space, time, and energy the complete formation of the photoionized wave packet.

Absence of Triplets in Single-Photon Double Ionization of Methanol.

Project description:Despite the abundance of data concerning single-photon double ionization of methanol, the spin state of the emitted electron pair has never been determined. Here we present the first evidence that identifies the emitted electron pair spin as overwhelmingly singlet when the dication forms in low-energy configurations. The experimental data show that while the yield of the CH2O+ + H3+ Coulomb explosion channel is abundant, the metastable methanol dication is largely absent. According to high-level ab initio simulations, these facts indicate that photoionization promptly forms singlet dication states, where they quickly decompose through various channels, with significant H3+ yields on the low-lying states. In contrast, if we assume that the initial dication is formed in one of the low-lying triplet states, the ab initio simulations exhibit a metastable dication, contradicting the experimental findings. Comparing the average simulated branching ratios with the experimental data suggests a >3 order of magnitude enhancement of the singlet:triplet ratio compared with their respective 1:3 multiplicities.

Multi-photon absorption limits to heralded single photon sources.

Project description:Single photons are of paramount importance to future quantum technologies, including quantum communication and computation. Nonlinear photonic devices using parametric processes offer a straightforward route to generating photons, however additional nonlinear processes may come into play and interfere with these sources. Here we analyse spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) sources in the presence of multi-photon processes. We conduct experiments in silicon and gallium indium phosphide photonic crystal waveguides which display inherently different nonlinear absorption processes, namely two-photon (TPA) and three-photon absorption (ThPA), respectively. We develop a novel model capturing these diverse effects which is in excellent quantitative agreement with measurements of brightness, coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) and second-order correlation function g((2))(0), showing that TPA imposes an intrinsic limit on heralded single photon sources. We build on these observations to devise a new metric, the quantum utility (QMU), enabling further optimisation of single photon sources.

Multi-photon above threshold ionization of multi-electron atoms and molecules using the R-matrix approach.

Project description:We formulate a computationally efficient time-independent method based on the multi-electron molecular R-matrix formalism. This method is used to calculate transition matrix elements for the multi-photon ionization of atoms and molecules under the influence of a perturbative field. The method relies on the partitioning of space which allows us to calculate the infinite-range free-free dipole integrals analytically in the outer region, beyond the range of the initial bound wave function. This approach is valid for an arbitrary order, that is, any number of photons absorbed both in the bound and the continuum part of the spectrum (below- and above-threshold ionization). We calculate generalized multi-photon cross sections and angular distributions of different systems (H, He, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) and validate our approach by comparison with data from the literature.

Supervised multi-frame dual-channel denoising enables long-term single-molecule FRET under extremely low photon budget.

Project description:Camera-based single-molecule techniques have emerged as crucial tools in revolutionizing the understanding of biochemical and cellular processes due to their ability to capture dynamic processes with high precision, high-throughput capabilities, and methodological maturity. However, the stringent requirement in photon number per frame and the limited number of photons emitted by each fluorophore before photobleaching pose a challenge to achieving both high temporal resolution and long observation times. In this work, we introduce MUFFLE, a supervised deep-learning denoising method that enables single-molecule FRET with up to 10-fold reduction in photon requirement per frame. In practice, MUFFLE extends the total number of observation frames by a factor of 10 or more, greatly relieving the trade-off between temporal resolution and observation length and allowing for long-term measurements even without the need for oxygen scavenging systems and triplet state quenchers.

Sub-cycle time resolution of multi-photon momentum transfer in strong-field ionization.

Project description:During multi-photon ionization of an atom it is well understood how the involved photons transfer their energy to the ion and the photoelectron. However, the transfer of the photon linear momentum is still not fully understood. Here, we present a time-resolved measurement of linear momentum transfer along the laser pulse propagation direction. We can show that the linear momentum transfer to the photoelectron depends on the ionization time within the laser cycle using the attoclock technique. We can mostly explain the measured linear momentum transfer within a classical model for a free electron in a laser field. However, corrections are required due to the parent-ion interaction and due to the initial momentum when the electron enters the continuum. The parent-ion interaction induces a negative attosecond time delay between the appearance in the continuum of the electron with minimal linear momentum transfer and the point in time with maximum ionization rate.

Coherence mapping to identify the intermediates of multi-channel dissociative ionization.

Project description:Identifying the short-lived intermediates and reaction mechanisms of multi-channel radical cation fragmentation processes remains a current and important challenge to understanding and predicting mass spectra. We find that coherent oscillations in the femtosecond time-dependent yields of several product ions following ultrafast strong-field ionization represent spectroscopic signatures that elucidate their mechanism of formation and identify the intermediate(s) they originate from. Experiments on endo-dicyclopentadiene show that vibrational frequencies from various intermediates are mapped onto their resulting products. Aided by ab initio methods, we identify the vibrational modes of both the cleaved and intact molecular ion intermediates. These results confirm stepwise and concerted fragmentation pathways of the dicyclopentadiene ion. This study highlights the power of tracking the femtosecond dynamics of all product ions simultaneously and sheds further light onto one of the fundamental reaction mechanisms in mass spectrometry, the retro-Diels Alder reaction.

Controlled multi-photon subtraction with cascaded Rydberg superatoms as single-photon absorbers.

Project description:The preparation of light pulses with well-defined quantum properties requires precise control at the individual photon level. Here, we demonstrate exact and controlled multi-photon subtraction from incoming light pulses. We employ a cascaded system of tightly confined cold atom ensembles with strong, collectively enhanced coupling of photons to Rydberg states. The excitation blockade resulting from interactions between Rydberg atoms limits photon absorption to one per ensemble and rapid dephasing of the collective excitation suppresses stimulated re-emission of the photon. We experimentally demonstrate subtraction with up to three absorbers. Furthermore, we present a thorough theoretical analysis of our scheme where we identify weak Raman decay of the long-lived Rydberg state as the main source of infidelity in the subtracted photon number and investigate the performance of the multi-photon subtractor for increasing absorber numbers in the presence of Raman decay.

Attosecond delays between dissociative and non-dissociative ionization of polyatomic molecules.

Project description:The interplay between electronic and nuclear motions in molecules is a central concept in molecular science. To what extent it influences attosecond photoionization delays is an important, still unresolved question. Here, we apply attosecond electron-ion coincidence spectroscopy and advanced calculations that include both electronic and nuclear motions to study the photoionization dynamics of CH4 and CD4 molecules. These molecules are known to feature some of the fastest nuclear dynamics following photoionization. Remarkably, we find no measurable delay between the photoionization of CH4 and CD4, neither experimentally nor theoretically. However, we measure and calculate delays of up to 20 as between the dissociative and non-dissociative photoionization of the highest-occupied molecular orbitals of both molecules. Experiment and theory are in quantitative agreement. These results show that, in the absence of resonances, even the fastest nuclear motion does not substantially influence photoionization delays, but identify a previously unknown signature of nuclear motion in dissociative-ionization channels. These findings have important consequences for the design and interpretation of attosecond chronoscopy in molecules, clusters, and liquids.

Single-Photon-Induced Post-Ionization to Boost Ion Yields in MALDI Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Project description:Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) is a rapidly growing method in the life sciences. However, for many analyte classes, its sensitivity is limited due to poor ionization efficiencies. To mitigate this problem, we here introduce a novel post-ionization scheme based on single-photon induced chemical ionization using pulsed RF-Kr lamps. The fine-vacuum conditions of a dual ion-funnel ion source effectively thermalize the evolving MALDI plume and enable ample gas-phase reactions. Injected chemical dopants crucially support fragment-less ionization to [M+H]+ /[M-H]- species. Based on this interplay, numerous glycerophospho-, sphingo-, and further lipids, registered from mammalian tissue sections, were boosted by up to three orders of magnitude, similar to results obtained with laser-based post-ionization (MALDI-2). Experiments with deuterated matrix and dopant, however, indicated complex chemical ionization pathways different from MALDI-2.
