Project description:Super-dry reforming of methane (CH4 + 3CO2 ? 2H2O + 4CO) is a very promising route for CO2 utilization. To maximize the yield of CO, a water-gas shift reaction (CO + H2O ? CO2 + H2) should be circumvented. Combination of dry reforming of methane, redox reactions (metal oxide is reduced by CO and H2 in one step and then oxidized by CO2 in the next step), and CO2 sorption in a fixed-bed reactor was proposed as a potential approach to suppress the water-gas shift reaction. It was demonstrated that this isothermal operation can produce two separate streams, one is rich in steam and the other in CO, in a redox cycle at 750 °C. However, both the thermodynamic analysis and experimental investigations suggest that steam- and CO-rich streams may not be produced sequentially in the redox mode at 750 °C.

Project description:In carbon capture and storage (CCS), CO(2) is captured at power plants and then injected underground into reservoirs like deep saline aquifers for long-term storage. While CCS may be critical for the continued use of fossil fuels in a carbon-constrained world, the deployment of CCS has been hindered by uncertainty in geologic storage capacities and sustainable injection rates, which has contributed to the absence of concerted government policy. Here, we clarify the potential of CCS to mitigate emissions in the United States by developing a storage-capacity supply curve that, unlike current large-scale capacity estimates, is derived from the fluid mechanics of CO(2) injection and trapping and incorporates injection-rate constraints. We show that storage supply is a dynamic quantity that grows with the duration of CCS, and we interpret the lifetime of CCS as the time for which the storage supply curve exceeds the storage demand curve from CO(2) production. We show that in the United States, if CO(2) production from power generation continues to rise at recent rates, then CCS can store enough CO(2) to stabilize emissions at current levels for at least 100 y. This result suggests that the large-scale implementation of CCS is a geologically viable climate-change mitigation option in the United States over the next century.

Project description:This study investigates a novel concept to coproduce high-purity H2 and syngas, which couples steam methane reforming with CaO carbonation to capture the generated CO2 and dry reforming of methane with CaCO3 calcination to directly utilize the captured CO2. The thermodynamic equilibrium of the reactive calcination stage was evaluated using Aspen Plus via a parametric analysis of various operating conditions, including the temperature, pressure, and CH4/CaCO3 molar ratio. Introducing a CH4 feed in the calcination stage promoted the driving force and completion of CaCO3 decomposition at lower temperatures (∼700 °C) compared to applying an inert flow, as a result of in situ CO2 conversion. A conceptual process design was investigated that employs a system of two moving bed reactors to produce nearly equivalent volumetric flows of pure H2 and a syngas stream with a H2/CO molar ratio close to 1. A solar reactor was examined for the reactive calcination step to cover the energy requirements of endothermic CaCO3 decomposition and dry reforming. The overall exergy efficiency of the process was found equal to ∼75.9%, a value ∼4.0 and ∼8.0% higher compared to sorption-enhanced reforming with oxy-fuel and solar calciner, respectively, without direct utilization of the captured CO2.

Project description:In February 2018, the United States enacted significant financial incentives for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) that will make capture from the lowest-capture-cost sources economically viable. The largest existing low-capture-cost opportunity is from ethanol fermentation at biorefineries in the Midwest. An impediment to deployment of carbon capture at ethanol biorefineries is that most are not close to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) fields or other suitable geological formations in which the carbon dioxide could be stored. Therefore, we analyze the viability of a pipeline network to transport carbon dioxide from Midwest ethanol biorefineries to the Permian Basin in Texas, which has the greatest current carbon dioxide demand for EOR and large potential for expansion. We estimate capture and transport costs and perform economic analysis for networks under three pipeline financing scenarios representing different combinations of commercial and government finance. Without government finance, we find that a network earning commercial rates of return would not be viable. With 50% government financing for pipelines, 19 million tons of carbon dioxide per year could be captured and transported profitably. Thirty million tons per year could be captured with full government pipeline financing, which would double global anthropogenic carbon capture and increase the United States' carbon dioxide EOR industry by 50%. Such a development would face challenges, including coordination between governments and industries, pressing timelines, and policy uncertainties, but is not unprecedented. This represents an opportunity to considerably increase CCUS in the near-term and develop long-term transport infrastructure facilitating future growth.

Project description:Chemical production is set to become the single largest driver of global oil consumption by 2030. To reduce oil consumption and resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, carbon dioxide can be captured from stacks or air and utilized as alternative carbon source for chemicals. Here, we show that carbon capture and utilization (CCU) has the technical potential to decouple chemical production from fossil resources, reducing annual GHG emissions by up to 3.5 Gt CO2-eq in 2030. Exploiting this potential, however, requires more than 18.1 PWh of low-carbon electricity, corresponding to 55% of the projected global electricity production in 2030. Most large-scale CCU technologies are found to be less efficient in reducing GHG emissions per unit low-carbon electricity when benchmarked to power-to-X efficiencies reported for other large-scale applications including electro-mobility (e-mobility) and heat pumps. Once and where these other demands are satisfied, CCU in the chemical industry could efficiently contribute to climate change mitigation.

Project description:Decarbonized power systems are critical to mitigate climate change, yet methods to achieve a reliable and resilient near-zero power system are still under exploration. This study develops an hourly power system simulation model considering high-resolution geological constraints for carbon-capture-utilization-and-storage to explore the optimal solution for a reliable and resilient near-zero power system. This is applied to 31 provinces in China by simulating 10,450 scenarios combining different electricity storage durations and interprovincial transmission capacities, with various shares of abated fossil power with carbon-capture-utilization-and-storage. Here, we show that allowing up to 20% abated fossil fuel power generation in the power system could reduce the national total power shortage rate by up to 9.0 percentages in 2050 compared with a zero fossil fuel system. A lowest-cost scenario with 16% abated fossil fuel power generation in the system even causes 2.5% lower investment costs in the network (or $16.8 billion), and also increases system resilience by reducing power shortage during extreme climatic events.

Project description:Closing the anthropogenic carbon cycle is one important strategy to combat climate change, and requires the chemistry to effectively combine CO2 capture with its conversion. Here, we propose a novel in situ CO2 utilization concept, calcium-looping reforming of methane, to realize the capture and conversion of CO2 in one integrated chemical process. This process couples the calcium-looping CO2 capture and the CH4 dry reforming reactions in the CaO-Ni bifunctional sorbent-catalyst, where the CO2 captured by CaO is reduced in situ by CH4 to CO, a reaction catalyzed by catalyzed by the adjacent metallic Ni. The process coupling scheme exhibits excellent decarbonation kinetics by exploiting Le Chatelier's principle to shift reaction equilibrium through continuous conversion of CO2, and results in an energy consumption 22% lower than that of conventional CH4 dry reforming for CO2 utilization. The proposed CO2 utilization concept offers a promising option to recycle carbon directly at large CO2 stationary sources in an energy-efficient manner.

Project description:Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is an efficient process to transform methane and carbon dioxide to syngas. Nickel could show good catalytic activity for DRM, whereas the deactivation of nickel surfaces by the formation of inert carbon structures is inevitable. In this study, we carry out a detailed investigation of the evolution and catalytic performance of the carbon-covered surface structure on Ni(100) with a combined density functional theory and microkinetic modeling approach. The results suggest that the pristine Ni(100) surface is prone to carbon deposition and accumulation under reaction conditions. Further studies show that over this carbon-covered reconstructed Ni(100) surface, a carbon-based Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism would be favored, and the activity and coke resistance is promoted. This surface state and reaction mechanism were rarely reported before and would provide more insights into the DRM process under real reaction conditions and would help design more stable Ni catalysts.

Project description:This manuscript presents a systematic meta-narrative review of peer-reviewed publications considering community acceptance and social impacts of site-specific Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects to inform the design and implementation of CCUS projects who seek to engage with communities during this process, as well as similar climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives. A meta-narrative approach to systematic review was utilized to understand literature from a range of site specific CCUS studies. 53 peer-reviewed papers were assessed reporting empirical evidence from studies on community impacts and social acceptance of CCUS projects published between 2009 and 2021. Three separate areas of contestation were identified. The first contestation was on acceptance, including how acceptance was conceptualized, how the different CCUS projects engaged with communities, and the role of acceptance in social learning. The second contestation related to communities: how communities were represented, where the communities were located in relation to the CCUS projects, and how the communities were defined. The third contestation was around CCUS impacts and the factors influencing individuals' perceptions of impacts, the role of uncertainty, and how impacts were challenged by local communities, politicians and scientists involved in the projects. The next step was to explore how these contestations were conceptualised, the aspects of commonality and difference, as well as the notable omissions. This facilitated a synthesis of the key dimensions of each contestation to inform our discussion regarding community awareness and acceptance of CCUS projects. This review concludes that each CCUS project is complex thus it is not advisable to provide best practice guidelines that will ensure particular outcomes. This systematic review shared recommendations in the literature as to how best to facilitate community engagement in relation to CCUS projects and similar place-based industrial innovation projects. These recommendations focus on the importance of providing transparency, acknowledging uncertainty and encouraging collaboration.

Project description:The 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, for the first time, stated that CO2 removal will be necessary to meet our climate goals. However, there is a cost to accomplish CO2 removal or mitigation that varies by source. Accordingly, a sensible strategy to prevent climate change begins by mitigating emission sources requiring the least energy and capital investment per ton of CO2, such as new emitters and long-term stationary sources. The production of CO2-derived products should also start by favoring processes that bring to market high-value products with sufficient margin to tolerate a higher cost of goods.
