Project description:Oxygen vacancies in proximity to surfaces and heterointerfaces in oxide thin film heterostructures have major effects on properties, resulting, for example, in emergent conduction behaviour, large changes in metal-insulator transition temperatures or enhanced catalytic activity. Here we report the discovery of a means of reversibly controlling the oxygen vacancy concentration and distribution in oxide heterostructures consisting of electronically conducting In2O3 films grown on ionically conducting Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 substrates. Oxygen ion redistribution across the heterointerface is induced using an applied electric field oriented in the plane of the interface, resulting in controlled oxygen vacancy (and hence electron) doping of the film and possible orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the film's electrical conduction. The reversible modified behaviour is dependent on interface properties and is attained without cation doping or changes in the gas environment.

Project description:The structure and chemical composition are the key parameters influencing the properties of organic thin films deposited on inorganic substrates. Such films often display structures that substantially differ from the bulk, and the substrate has a relevant influence on their polymorphism. In this work, we illuminate the role of the substrate by studying its influence on para-benzoquinone on two different substrates, Ag(111) and graphene. We employ a combination of first-principles calculations and machine learning to identify the energetically most favorable structures on both substrates and study their electronic properties. Our results indicate that for the first layer, similar structures are favorable for both substrates. For the second layer, we find two significantly different structures. Interestingly, graphene favors the one with less, while Ag favors the one with more electronic coupling. We explain this switch in stability as an effect of the different charge transfer on the two substrates.

Project description:Although the generation of mechanical stress in the anode material is suggested as a possible reason for electrode degradation and fading of storage capacity in batteries, only limited knowledge of the electrode stress and its evolution is available at present. Here, we show real-time monitoring of the interfacial stress of a few-layer MoS2 system under the sodiation/desodiation process using microcantilever electrodes. During the first sodiation with a voltage plateau of 1.0 to 0.85 V, the MoS2 exhibits a compressive stress (2.1 Nm-1), which is substantially smaller than that measured (9.8 Nm-1) during subsequent plateaus at 0.85 to 0.4 V due to the differential volume expansion of the MoS2 film. The conversion reaction to Mo below 0.1 V generates an anomalous compressive stress of 43 Nm-1 with detrimental effects. These results also suggest the existence of a separate discharge stage between 0.6 and 0.1 V, where the generated stress is only approximately one-third of that observed below 0.1 V. This approach can be adapted to help resolve the localized stress in a wide range of electrode materials, to gain additional insights into mechanical effects of charge storage, and for long-lifetime battery design.

Project description:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has evolved as an important technique to coat conformal protective thin films on cathode and anode particles of lithium ion batteries to enhance their electrochemical performance. Coating a conformal, conductive and optimal ultrathin film on cathode particles has significantly increased the capacity retention and cycle life as demonstrated in our previous work. In this work, we have unearthed the synergetic effect of electrochemically active iron oxide films coating and partial doping of iron on LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 (LMNO) particles. The ionic Fe penetrates into the lattice structure of LMNO during the ALD process. After the structural defects were saturated, the iron started participating in formation of ultrathin oxide films on LMNO particle surface. Owing to the conductive nature of iron oxide films, with an optimal film thickness of ~0.6 nm, the initial capacity improved by ~25% at room temperature and by ~26% at an elevated temperature of 55 °C at a 1C cycling rate. The synergy of doping of LMNO with iron combined with the conductive and protective nature of the optimal iron oxide film led to a high capacity retention (~93% at room temperature and ~91% at 55 °C) even after 1,000 cycles at a 1C cycling rate.

Project description:Solution processibility is a unique advantage of organic semiconductors, permitting the low-cost production of flexible electronics under ambient conditions. However, the solution affinity to substrate surfaces remains a serious dilemma; liquid manipulation is more difficult on highly hydrophobic surfaces, but the use of such surfaces is indispensable for improving device characteristics. Here we demonstrate a simple technique, which we call 'push coating', to produce uniform large-area semiconducting polymer films over a hydrophobic surface with eliminating material loss. We utilize a poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based trilayer stamp whose conformal contact with the substrate enables capillarity-induced wetting of the surface. Films are formed through solvent sorption and retention in the stamp, allowing the stamp to be peeled perfectly from the film. The planar film formation on hydrophobic surfaces also enables subsequent fine film patterning. The technique improves the crystallinity and field-effect mobility of stamped semiconductor films, constituting a major step towards flexible electronics production.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenide-based thin-film transistors (TFTs) have drawn intense research attention, but they suffer from high cost of materials and complex methods. Directly printed transistors have been in the limelight due to low cost and an environmentally friendly technique. An electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing technique was employed to pattern both MoS2 active layer and Ag source and drain (S/D) electrodes. Printed MoS2 lines were patterned on a silicon wafer using a precursor solution and simple annealing, and the patterns were transferred on other SiO2 substrates for TFT fabrication. On top of the patterned MoS2, Ag paste was also patterned for S/D electrodes using EHD jet printing. The printed TFTs had a high on-off current ratio exceeding 105, low subthreshold slope, and better hysteresis behavior after transferring MoS2 patterns. This result could be important for practical TFT applications and could be extended to other 2D materials.

Project description:LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathodes suffer from severe bulk structural and interfacial degradation during battery operation. To address these issues, a three in one strategy using ZrB2 as the dopant is proposed for constructing a stable Ni-rich cathode. In this strategy, Zr and B are doped into the bulk of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, respectively, which is beneficial to stabilize the crystal structure and mitigate the microcracks. Meanwhile, during the high-temperature calcination, some of the remaining Zr at the surface combined with the surface lithium source to form lithium zirconium coatings, which physically protect the surface and suppress the interfacial phase transition upon cycling. Thus, the 0.2 mol% ZrB2-LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode delivers a discharge capacity of 183.1 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 50 °C (1C, 3.0-4.3 V), with an outstanding capacity retention of 88.1%. The cycling stability improvement is more obvious when the cut-off voltage increased to 4.4 V. Density functional theory confirms that the superior structural stability and excellent thermal stability are attributed to the higher exchange energy of Li/Ni exchange and the higher formation energy of oxygen vacancies by ZrB2 doping. The present work offers a three in one strategy to simultaneously stabilize the crystal structure and surface for the Ni-rich cathode via a facile preparation process.

Project description:The trade-off between light absorption and carrier transport in semiconductor thin film photoelectrodes is a major limiting factor of their solar-to-hydrogen efficiency for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Herein, we develop a heterogeneous doping strategy that combines surface doping with bulk gradient doping to decouple light absorption and carrier transport in a thin film photoelectrode. Taking La and Mg doped Ta3N5 thin film photoanode as an example, enhanced light absorption is achieved by surface La doping through alleviating anisotropic optical absorption, while efficient carrier transport in the bulk is maintained by the gradient band structure induced by gradient Mg doping. Moreover, the homojunction formed between the La-doped layer and the gradient Mg-doped layer further promotes charge separation. As a result, the heterogeneously doped photoanode yields a half-cell solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 4.07%, which establishes Ta3N5 as a leading performer among visible-light-responsive photoanodes. The heterogeneous doping strategy could be extended to other semiconductor thin film light absorbers to break performance trade-offs by decoupling light absorption and carrier transport.

Project description:Thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO) channels present high mobility, large-area uniformity, mechanical flexibility and photosensitivity, and thus have extensive applicability in photodetectors, wearable devices, etc. However, pure a-IGZO based photosensors only exhibit a UV light response with limited sensitivity performance. By utilizing in situ interfacial hydrogen doping, it is demonstrated that the a-IGZO TFTs with the Al2O3 dielectric deposited by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition at room temperature (RT) have excellent photosensing performance, such as a photoresponsivity of over 6 × 105 A W-1 and a light to dark current ratio up to 107. This is attributed to spontaneous interfacial hydrogen doping into the a-IGZO channel during sputtering deposition of a-IGZO on hydrogen-rich Al2O3 films, thus generating subgap states in the band gap of IGZO. Further, color pattern imaging was achieved by employing an array of the color distinguishable devices, and flexibility was demonstrated by fabricating the TFTs onto polymer substrates. Moreover, it is also found that both the RT and 150 °C Al2O3 a-IGZO TFTs exhibit typical light-stimulated synaptic behaviors, including excitatory post-synaptic current and pair-pules facilitation, etc., and the memory time of the synaptic devices can be easily modulated by the degree of the interfacial hydrogen doping.
