ABSTRACT: The title compound, 5-hy-droxy-N,N,N-tri-methyl-tryptammonium (5-HTQ) iodide {systematic name: [2-(5-hy-droxy-1H-indol-3-yl)eth-yl]tri-methyl-aza-nium iodide}, C₁₃H₁₉N₂O⁺·I^-, has a single tryptammonium cation and one iodide anion in the asymmetric unit. The ions are held together by N-H⋯I and O-H⋯I hydrogen bonds in infinite chains along [100].

Structure and interstitial iodide migration in hybrid perovskite methylammonium lead iodide.

Project description:Hybrid perovskites form an emerging family of exceptional light harvesting compounds. However, the mechanism underpinning their photovoltaic effect is still far from understood, which is impeded by a lack of clarity on their structures. Here we show that iodide ions in the methylammonium lead iodide migrate via interstitial sites at temperatures above 280 K. This coincides with temperature dependent static distortions resulting in pseudocubic local symmetry. Based on bond distance analysis, the migrating and distorted iodines are at lengths consistent with the formation of I2 molecules, suggesting a 2I-→I2+2e- redox couple. The actual formula of this compound is thus (CH3NH3)PbI3-2x(I2)x where x∼0.007 at room temperature. A crucial feature of the tetragonal structure is that the methylammonium ions do not sit centrally in the A-site cavity, but disordered around two off-centre orientations that facilitate the interstitial ion migration via a gate opening mechanism.

dl-Alaninium iodide.

Project description:The crystal structure of dl-alanine hydro-iodide (1-carb-oxy-ethanaminium iodide), C(3)H(8)NO(2) (+)·I(-), is that of an organic salt consisting of N-protonated cations and iodide anions. The compound features homochiral helices of N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded cations in the [010] direction; neighbouring chains are related by crystallographic inversion centers and hence show opposite chirality. The iodide counter-anions act as hydrogen-bond acceptors towards H atoms of the ammonium and carb-oxy groups, and cross-link the chains along [100]. Thus, an overall two-dimensional network is formed in the ab plane. No short contacts occur between iodide anions.

Melaminium iodide monohydrate.

Project description:In the title melaminium salt, 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazin-1-ium iodide monohydrate, C(3)H(7)N(6) (+)·I(-)·H(2)O, the components are linked via N-H⋯O, N-H⋯N, O-H⋯I and N-H⋯I hydrogen bonds. All of the H atoms of the melaminium cation are involved in hydrogen bonds. The melaminium cations are inter-connected by four N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, forming ribbons along [111]. The water mol-ecules connected by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds also form part of these ribbons. The ribbons are inter-connected by other hydrogen bonds (O-H⋯I and N-H⋯I), as well as by π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.6597 (17) Å].

3-Carbamothioylpyridinium iodide.

Project description:In the crystal of the title salt, C(6)H(7)N(2)S(+)·I(-), inversion-related cations form an R(2) (2)(8) dimer linked by a pair of N-H⋯S hydrogen bonds. Pairs of iodide anions are located between adjacent cation dimers and are linked to them by way of N-H⋯I hydrogen bonds. This results in zigzag chains propagating in [001] lying parallel to the bc plane.

Iodide-enhanced palladium catalysis via formation of iodide-bridged binuclear palladium complex.

Project description:The prevalence of metalloenzymes with multinuclear metal complexes in their active sites inspires chemists' interest in the development of multinuclear catalysts. Studies in this area commonly focus on binuclear catalysts containing either metal-metal bond or electronically discrete, conformationally advantageous metal centres connected by multidentate ligands, while in many multinuclear metalloenzymes the metal centres are bridged through μ2-ligands without a metal-metal bond. We report herein a μ2-iodide-bridged binuclear palladium catalyst which accelerates the C-H nitrosation/annulation reaction and significantly enhances its yield compared with palladium acetate catalyst. The superior activity of this binuclear palladium catalyst is attributed to the trans effect-relay through the iodide bridge from one palladium sphere to the other palladium sphere, which facilitates dissociation of the stable six-membered chelating ring in palladium intermediate and accelerates the catalytic cycle. Such a trans effect-relay represents a bimetallic cooperation mode and may open an avenue to design and develop multinuclear catalysts.

Two Schiff base iodide compounds as iodide ion conductors showing high conductivity.

Project description:Here, we reported the crystal structures, dielectric and conducting properties of two Schiff base iodide compounds [m-BrBz-1-APy]I3 (1) and [o-FBz-1-APy]I3 (2). The Schiff base cations build irregular channel frameworks, and the polyiodide anions are located in the channel. The impedance spectra demonstrated that the two compounds show intrinsic iodide ion conductance with higher conductivity of 1.03(4) × 10-4 S cm-1 at 343 K for 1 and 4.94(3) × 10-3 S cm-1 at 353 K for 2. The dielectric modulus analysis further confirmed that the conductance contributed to the migration of iodide ions.

Few-layer MoSe₂ possessing high catalytic activity towards iodide/tri-iodide redox shuttles.

Project description:Due to the two-dimensional confinement of electrons, single- and few-layer MoSe₂ nanostructures exhibit unusual optical and electrical properties and have found wide applications in catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, field effect transistor, electrochemical intercalation, and so on. Here we present a new application in dye-sensitized solar cell as catalyst for the reduction of I₃(-) to I(-) at the counter electrode. The few-layer MoSe₂ is fabricated by surface selenization of Mo-coated soda-lime glass. Our results show that the few-layer MoSe₂ displays high catalytic efficiency for the regeneration of I(-) species, which in turn yields a photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency of 9.00%, while the identical photoanode coupling with "champion" electrode based on Pt nanoparticles on FTO glass generates efficiency only 8.68%. Thus, a Pt- and FTO-free counter electrode outperforming the best conventional combination is obtained. In this electrode, Mo film is found to significantly decrease the sheet resistance of the counter electrode, contributing to the excellent device performance. Since all of the elements in the electrode are of high abundance ratios, this type of electrode is promising for the fabrication of large area devices at low materials cost.

Project description:The title salt, [NH(3)CH(2)CH(2)NH(2)](+)·I(-), has an array structure based on strong inter-molecular N-H⋯N hydrogen bonding formed between the ammonium and amine groups of adjacent cations. This inter-action gives a helical chain of cations that runs parallel to the b axis. The four remaining NH group H atoms all form hydrogen bonds to the iodide anion, and these iodide anions lie in channels parallel to the cation-cation chains.

Colloidal lead iodide nanorings.

Project description:Colloidal chemistry of nanomaterials experienced a tremendous development in the last decades. In the course of the journey 0D nanoparticles, 1D nanowires, and 2D nanosheets have been synthesized. They have in common to possess a simple topology. We present a colloidal synthesis strategy for lead iodide nanorings, with a non-trivial topology. First, two-dimensional structures were synthesized in nonanoic acid as the sole solvent. Subsequently, they underwent an etching process in the presence of trioctylphosphine, which determines the size of the hole in the ring structure. We propose a mechanism for the formation of lead iodide nanosheets which also explains the etching of the two-dimensional structures starting from the inside, leading to nanorings. In addition, we demonstrate a possible application of the as-prepared nanorings in photodetectors. These devices are characterized by a fast response, high gain values, and a linear relation between photocurrent and incident light power intensity over a large range. The synthesis approach allows for inexpensive large-scale production of nanorings with tunable properties.
