Self-Report versus Neuropsychological Tests for Examining Executive Functions in Youth Soccer Athletes-A Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT: Cognitive diagnostics, especially the measurement of executive functions (EFs) in the context of sports and talent diagnostics, is a popular research topic. However, research is lacking on how self-reports are sufficient to examine the EFs of youth athletes for performance diagnostics. Thus, the current study aims to evaluate the relationships between neuropsychological tasks (3-back task, cued Go/NoGo task, flanker task, and number-letter task) and a self-report for examining EFs (BRIEF-SB). Furthermore, it should be investigated whether it is possible to predict the outcome of EF tasks using a self-report inventory. Therefore, 68 young professional soccer players (M_age = 14.26 ± 1.35 years) from a national youth academy were included in the study. The weak-to-moderate correlations (r = 0.000, p = 0.999 to r = -0.442, p < 0.01) and the results of sensitivity analysis (0.125 to 0.538) do not support using a self-report of EFs for cognitive performance diagnostics. The inventory is only suitable for identifying executive dysfunctions in athletes recovering from head injuries or concussions.

Project description:IntroductionExecutive functions (EFs) are relevant for game performance in soccer and have been investigated in previous research. However, emotions are a well-known performance factor in sport competitions, which may affect performance by means of EFs. The diagnostic of EFs has mainly been performed disregarding the potential impact of emotional states. Thus, we aimed to initially analyze interaction between emotional states and EFs in two studies with male youth elite soccer players.MethodsIn the first study, 105 players (Mage = 14.97) completed computerized tasks assessing inhibition, cognitive flexibility and working memory. In the second study, 92 players (Mage = 15.17) performed adapted and validated tests of inhibition (n = 45) or cognitive flexibility (n = 47) in a soccer-specific setting (SoccerBot360). Emotional and affective states were assessed using the German Sport Emotion Questionnaire and self-assessment manikins.ResultsFor the computerized tasks, results showed a significant negative correlation between switch costs accuracy and tension, r = 0.28, indicating lower error rates with higher levels of tension. In contrast, in the SoccerBot360 we found significant positive correlations for response time and tension (no-switch: r = 0.38; switch: r = 0.39) representing prolonged response times related to tension. Further, for soccer-specific inhibition, positive emotions were significantly positively correlated with response time (congruent: r = 0.32; incongruent: r = 0.32). Subsequent regression analyses also demonstrate that valence and arousal effectively explain variance in cognitive performance parameters under neutral conditions.DiscussionAccordingly, the ambiguity of the results suggests high variability in EF performance, affective and emotional states as well as a potentially moderating influence of other variables such as context and task difficulty. Thus, future cognitive diagnostic research should integrate assessments of emotional and affective states as these may contribute to situational fluctuations in EF performance.

Project description:Studies have shown that in open-skill sports the executive function of high-performing players is significantly higher than that of the control group. However, whether participation in soccer effectively improves executive function is unclear because previous studies lacked baseline measurements of executive function. Furthermore, agility, mostly developed in early childhood, is the most demanding component of physical fitness in open-skill sports, requiring sudden changes in body direction while running at full speed. However, no studies have examined the improvement in agility of young children participating in open-skill sports through comparison with a control group. This study aimed to clarify whether instruction in soccer, an open-skill sport, can effectively improve the executive function and agility of kindergarteners compared to a control group. In April 2020, 31 five-year-old children enrolled in kindergarten K in H prefecture in Japan were targeted as the intervention group and received soccer instruction for 12 weeks. In April 2020, a control group was established, consisting of 39 five-year-old children enrolled at the same kindergarten. Participants in both groups were measured for agility, inhibition, and working memory before and after (pre-post) soccer instruction for the intervention group. For each item, a two-way ANOVA of the group (intervention group・control group) x measurement period (pre-post) was performed, showing no significant interactions for working memory and agility. Because only the inhibition effect was significant, simple main effects were tested. Regarding inhibition, although the intervention group (M = 0.18, SD = 0.01) and the control group (M = 0.17, SD = 0.01) did not differ significantly in performance pre-intervention, the intervention group (M = 0.23, SD = 0.01) showed significantly better performance post-intervention compared to the control group (M = 0.19, SD = 0.01) (p < .01). Thus, soccer instruction improved kindergarteners' inhibition, to a level significantly higher than that of the control group. Still, no differences were found between groups regarding working memory and agility.

Project description:It is increasingly acknowledged that, often, patients with post-stroke aphasia not only have language impairments but also deficits in other cognitive domains (e.g. executive functions) that influence recovery and response to therapy. Many assessments of executive functions are verbally based and therefore usually not administered in this patient group. However, the performance of patients with aphasia in such tests might provide valuable insights both from a theoretical and clinical perspective. We aimed to elucidate (i) if verbal executive tests measure anything beyond the language impairment in patients with chronic post-stroke aphasia, (ii) how performance in such tests relates to performance in language tests and nonverbal cognitive functions, and (iii) the neural correlates associated with performance in verbal executive tests. In this observational study, three commonly used verbal executive tests were administered to a sample of patients with varying aphasia severity. Their performance in these tests was explored by means of principal component analyses, and the relationships with a broad range of background tests regarding their language and nonverbal cognitive functions were elucidated with correlation analyses. Furthermore, lesion analyses were performed to explore brain-behaviour relationships. In a sample of 32 participants, we found that: (i) a substantial number of patients with aphasia were able to perform the verbal executive tests; (ii) variance in performance was not explained by the severity of an individual's overall language impairment alone but was related to two independent behavioural principal components per test; (iii) not all aspects of performance were related to the patient's language abilities; and (iv) all components were associated with separate neural correlates, some overlapping partly in frontal and parietal regions. Our findings extend our clinical and theoretical understanding of dysfunctions beyond language in patients with aphasia.
