Reversible Growth of Gold Nanoparticles in the Low-Temperature Water-Gas Shift Reaction.

ABSTRACT: Supported gold nanoparticles are widely studied catalysts and are among the most active known for the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction, which is essential in fuel and energy applications, but their practical application has been limited by their poor thermal stability. The catalysts deactivate on-stream via the growth of small Au nanoparticles. Using operando X-ray absorption and in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy, we report direct evidence that this process can be reversed by carrying out a facile oxidative treatment, which redisperses the gold nanoparticles and restores catalytic activity. The use of in situ methods reveals the complex dynamics of supported gold nanoparticles under reaction conditions and demonstrates that gold catalysts can be easily regenerated, expanding their scope for practical application.

The most active Cu facet for low-temperature water gas shift reaction.

Project description:Identification of the active site is important in developing rational design strategies for solid catalysts but is seriously blocked by their structural complexity. Here, we use uniform Cu nanocrystals synthesized by a morphology-preserved reduction of corresponding uniform Cu2O nanocrystals in order to identify the most active Cu facet for low-temperature water gas shift (WGS) reaction. Cu cubes enclosed with {100} facets are very active in catalyzing the WGS reaction up to 548 K while Cu octahedra enclosed with {111} facets are inactive. The Cu-Cu suboxide (CuxO, x ≥ 10) interface of Cu(100) surface is the active site on which all elementary surface reactions within the catalytic cycle proceed smoothly. However, the formate intermediate was found stable at the Cu-CuxO interface of Cu(111) surface with consequent accumulation and poisoning of the surface at low temperatures. Thereafter, Cu cubes-supported ZnO catalysts are successfully developed with extremely high activity in low-temperature WGS reaction.Nanocrystals display a variety of facets with different catalytic activity. Here the authors identify the most active facet of copper nanocrystals relevant to the low-temperature water gas shift reaction and further design zinc oxide-copper nanocubes with exceptionally high catalytic activity.

Copper-catalysed low-temperature water-gas shift reaction for selective deuteration of aryl halides.

Project description:The introduction of deuterium atoms into organic compounds is of importance for basic chemistry, material sciences, and the development of drugs in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically for identification and quantification of metabolites. Hence, methodologies for the synthesis of selectively labelled compounds continue to be a major area of interest for many scientists. Herein, we present a practical and stable heterogeneous copper catalyst, which permits for dehalogenative deuteration via water-gas shift reaction at comparably low temperature. This novel approach allows deuteration of diverse (hetero)aryl halides with good functional group tolerance, and no reduction of the aromatic rings or other easily reducible formyl and cyano groups. Multi-gram experiments show the potential of this method in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry.

Non-Thermal Plasma Activation of Gold-Based Catalysts for Low-Temperature Water-Gas Shift Catalysis.

Project description:Non-thermal plasma activation has been used to enable low-temperature water-gas shift over a Au/CeZrO4 catalyst. The activity obtained was comparable with that attained by heating the catalyst to 180 °C providing an opportunity for the hydrogen production to be obtained under conditions where the thermodynamic limitations are minimal. Using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), structural changes associated with the gold nanoparticles in the catalyst have been observed which are not found under thermal activation indicating a weakening of the Au-CO bond and a change in the mechanism of deactivation.

Ptn–Ov synergistic sites on MoOx/γ-Mo2N heterostructure for low-temperature reverse water–gas shift reaction

Project description:In heterogeneous catalysis, the interface between active metal and support plays a key role in catalyzing various reactions. Specially, the synergistic effect between active metals and oxygen vacancies on support can greatly promote catalytic efficiency. However, the construction of high-density metal-vacancy synergistic sites on catalyst surface is very challenging. In this work, isolated Pt atoms are first deposited onto a very thin-layer of MoO3 surface stabilized on γ-Mo2N. Subsequently, the Pt–MoOx/γ-Mo2N catalyst, containing abundant Pt cluster-oxygen vacancy (Ptn–Ov) sites, is in situ constructed. This catalyst exhibits an unmatched activity and excellent stability in the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction at low temperature (300 °C). Systematic in situ characterizations illustrate that the MoO3 structure on the γ-Mo2N surface can be easily reduced into MoOx (2 < x < 3), followed by the creation of sufficient oxygen vacancies. The Pt atoms are bonded with oxygen atoms of MoOx, and stable Pt clusters are formed. These high-density Ptn–Ov active sites greatly promote the catalytic activity. This strategy of constructing metal-vacancy synergistic sites provides valuable insights for developing efficient supported catalysts. Constructing effective synergistic sites between multiple components in supported catalysts is the key to improve catalytic performance. Here the authors utilized the stress of MoO3/γ-Mo2N structure and the interaction between Pt and support to construct an effective catalytic interface for the low-temperature reverse water–gas shift reaction.

Quantification and optimization of platinum-molybdenum carbide interfacial sites to enhance low-temperature water-gas shift reaction.

Project description:Pt/α-MoC1-x catalysts exhibit exceptional activity in low-temperature water-gas shift reactions. However, quantitatively identifying and fine-tuning the active sites has remained a significant challenge. In this study, we reveal that fully exposed monolayer Pt nanoclusters on molybdenum carbides demonstrate mass activity that exceeds that of bulk molybdenum carbide catalysts by one to two orders of magnitude at 100-200 °C for low-temperature water-gas shift reactions. This advancement is driven by the precise quantification and elucidation of active sites along the Pt-molybdenum carbide interfacial perimeter. By combining sacrificial CO adsorption per Pt atom, Density Functional Theory calculations, and CO chemisorption measurements, we establish a direct correlation between the monolayer Pt nanocluster size and the number of interfacial perimeters on Pt/α-MoC1-x catalysts. In this work, these findings provide key insights into the active site configuration of Pt/α-MoC1-x catalysts and open pathways for innovative catalyst design, with the interfacial perimeter identified as a crucial factor in enhancing catalytic performance.

Room-temperature electrochemical water-gas shift reaction for high purity hydrogen production.

Project description:Traditional water-gas shift reaction provides one primary route for industrial production of clean-energy hydrogen. However, this process operates at high temperatures and pressures, and requires additional separation of H2 from products containing CO2, CH4 and residual CO. Herein, we report a room-temperature electrochemical water-gas shift process for direct production of high purity hydrogen (over 99.99%) with a faradaic efficiency of approximately 100%. Through rational design of anode structure to facilitate CO diffusion and PtCu catalyst to optimize CO adsorption, the anodic onset potential is lowered to almost 0 volts versus the reversible hydrogen electrode at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The optimized PtCu catalyst achieves a current density of 70.0 mA cm-2 at 0.6 volts which is over 12 times that of commercial Pt/C (40 wt.%) catalyst, and remains stable for even more than 475 h. This study opens a new and promising route of producing high purity hydrogen.

Substituting Chromium in Iron-Based Catalysts for the High-Temperature Water-Gas Shift Reaction.

Project description:A set of doped iron oxides (chromium, aluminum, gallium, indium, manganese, zinc, niobium) were prepared by a one-step coprecipitation/calcination approach evaluated for their WGS activity under industrially relevant conditions and characterized in detail. The WGS activity after ageing the doped catalyst for 4 days at 25 bar follows the order chromium ≈ aluminum > gallium > indium > manganese > zinc > niobium for copper-codoped catalysts. The activated catalysts predominantly consist of magnetite, irrespective of the dopant. Mössbauer spectra of aged catalysts showed that aluminum and zinc occupy both tetrahedral and octahedral sites of magnetite, while chromium, gallium, indium, manganese, and niobium preferentially substitute octahedral iron. The incorporation of trivalent metal ions of similar size to octahedral Fe3+ (i.e., chromium, aluminum, gallium) results in moderate to high CO conversion, irrespective of incorporation in tetrahedral or octahedral sites. The substitution of Fe2+ with Mn2+ results in an increased Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio. Incorporation of Zn2+ in tetrahedral sites (replacing Fe3+ ions) leads to a complex structure where the charge balance is compensated from the octahedral sites. Separate dopant metal oxide phases were observed in indium- and niobium-doped catalysts. XPS shows that copper is present as a separate phase in activated copper-codoped catalysts. Aluminum is identified as the most promising promoter for substituting chromium in commercial high-temperature WGS catalysts on the basis of their similar high CO conversion although incorporation of these dopants into the magnetite structure differed substantially.

Partially sintered copper‒ceria as excellent catalyst for the high-temperature reverse water gas shift reaction.

Project description:For high-temperature catalytic reaction, it is of significant importance and challenge to construct stable active sites in catalysts. Herein, we report the construction of sufficient and stable copper clusters in the copper‒ceria catalyst with high Cu loading (15 wt.%) for the high-temperature reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. Under very harsh working conditions, the ceria nanorods suffered a partial sintering, on which the 2D and 3D copper clusters were formed. This partially sintered catalyst exhibits unmatched activity and excellent durability at high temperature. The interaction between the copper and ceria ensures the copper clusters stably anchored on the surface of ceria. Abundant in situ generated and consumed surface oxygen vacancies form synergistic effect with adjacent copper clusters to promote the reaction process. This work investigates the structure-function relation of the catalyst with sintered and inhomogeneous structure and explores the potential application of the sintered catalyst in C1 chemistry.

Improving the Performance of Supported Ionic Liquid Phase Catalysts for the Ultra-Low-Temperature Water Gas Shift Reaction Using Organic Salt Additives.

Project description:The water gas shift reaction (WGSR) is catalyzed by supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) systems containing homogeneous Ru complexes dissolved in ionic liquids (ILs). These systems work at very low temperatures, that is, between 120 and 160 °C, as compared to >200 °C in the conventional process. To improve the performance of this ultra-low-temperature catalysis, we investigated the influence of various additives on the catalytic activity of these SILP systems. In particular, the application of methylene blue (MB) as an additive doubled the activity. Infrared spectroscopy measurements combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations excluded a coordinative interaction of MB with the Ru complex. In contrast, state-of-the-art theoretical calculations elucidated the catalytic effect of the additives by non-covalent interactions. In particular, the additives can significantly lower the barrier of the rate-determining step of the reaction mechanism via formation of hydrogen bonds. The theoretical predictions, thereby, showed excellent agreement with the increase of experimental activity upon variation of the hydrogen bonding moieties in the additives investigated.

Catalytic Nucleophilic Allylation Driven by the Water-Gas Shift Reaction.

Project description:The ruthenium-catalyzed allylation of aldehydes with allylic pro-nucleophiles has been demonstrated to be an efficient means to form carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions. The evolution of this reaction from the initial serendipitous discovery to its general synthetic scope is detailed, highlighting the roles of water, CO, and amine in the generation of a more complete catalytic cycle. The use of unsymmetrical allylic pro-nucleophiles was shown to give preferential product formation through the modulation of reaction conditions. Both (E)-cinnamyl acetate and vinyl oxirane were efficiently used to form the anti-branched products (up to >20:1 anti/syn) and E-linear products (up to >20:1 E/Z) in high selectivity with aromatic, α,β-unsaturated, and aliphatic aldehydes, respectively. Attempts to render the reaction enantioselective are highlighted and include enantioenrichment of up to 75:25 for benzaldehyde.
