Rapid and efficient hydrogen clathrate hydrate formation in confined nanospace.

ABSTRACT: Clathrate hydrates are crystalline solids characterized by their ability to accommodate large quantities of guest molecules. Although CH₄ and CO₂ are the traditional guests found in natural systems, incorporating smaller molecules (e.g., H₂) is challenging due to the need to apply higher pressures to stabilize the hydrogen-bonded network. Another critical limitation of hydrates is the slow nucleation and growth kinetics. Here, we show that specially designed activated carbon materials can surpass these obstacles by acting as nanoreactors promoting the nucleation and growth of H₂ hydrates. The confinement effects in the inner cavities promote the massive growth of hydrogen hydrates at moderate temperatures, using pure water, with extremely fast kinetics and much lower pressures than the bulk system.

Tuneable mesoporous silica material for hydrogen storage application via nano-confined clathrate hydrate construction.

Project description:Safe storage and utilisation of hydrogen is an ongoing area of research, showing potential to enable hydrogen becoming an effective fuel, substituting current carbon-based sources. Hydrogen storage is associated with a high energy cost due to its low density and boiling point, which drives a high price. Clathrates (gas hydrates) are water-based (ice-like) structures incorporating small non-polar compounds such as H2 in cages formed by hydrogen bonded water molecules. Since only water is required to construct the cages, clathrates have been identified as a potential solution for safe storage of hydrogen. In bulk, pure hydrogen clathrate (H2O-H2) only forms in harsh conditions, but confined in nanospaces the properties of water are altered and hydrogen storage at mild pressure and temperature could become possible. Here, specifically a hydrophobic mesoporous silica is proposed as a host material, providing a suitable nano-confinement for ice-like clathrate hydrate. The hybrid silica material shows an important decrease of the pressure required for clathrate formation (approx. 20%) compared to the pure H2O-H2 system. In-situ inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and neutron diffraction (ND) provided unique insights into the interaction of hydrogen with the complex surface of the hybrid material and demonstrated the stability of nano-confined hydrogen clathrate hydrate.

Probing the critical nucleus size in tetrahydrofuran clathrate hydrate formation using surface-anchored nanoparticles.

Project description:Controlling the formation of clathrate hydrates is crucial for advancing hydrate-based technologies. However, the microscopic mechanism underlying clathrate hydrate formation through nucleation remains poorly elucidated. Specifically, the critical nucleus, theorized as a pivotal step in nucleation, lacks empirical validation. Here, we report uniform nanoparticles, e.g., graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and gold or silver nanocubes with controlled sizes, as nanoprobes to experimentally measure the size of the critical nucleus of tetrahydrofuran (THF) clathrate hydrate formation. The capability of the nanoparticles in facilitating THF clathrate hydrate nucleation displays generally an abrupt change at a nanoparticle-size-determined specific supercooling. It is revealed that the free-energy barrier shows an abrupt change when the nanoparticles have an approximately the same size as that of the critical nucleus. Thus, it is inferred that THF clathrate hydrate nucleation involves the creation of a critical nucleus with its size being inversely proportional to the supercooling. By proving the existence and determining the supercooling-dependent size of the critical nucleus of the THF clathrate hydrates, this work brings insights in the microscopic pictures of the clathrate hydrate nucleation.

Reduced phase stability and faster formation/dissociation kinetics in confined methane hydrate.

Project description:The mechanisms involved in the formation/dissociation of methane hydrate confined at the nanometer scale are unraveled using advanced molecular modeling techniques combined with a mesoscale thermodynamic approach. Using atom-scale simulations probing coexistence upon confinement and free energy calculations, phase stability of confined methane hydrate is shown to be restricted to a narrower temperature and pressure domain than its bulk counterpart. The melting point depression at a given pressure, which is consistent with available experimental data, is shown to be quantitatively described using the Gibbs-Thomson formalism if used with accurate estimates for the pore/liquid and pore/hydrate interfacial tensions. The metastability barrier upon hydrate formation and dissociation is found to decrease upon confinement, therefore providing a molecular-scale picture for the faster kinetics observed in experiments on confined gas hydrates. By considering different formation mechanisms-bulk homogeneous nucleation, external surface nucleation, and confined nucleation within the porosity-we identify a cross-over in the nucleation process; the critical nucleus formed in the pore corresponds either to a hemispherical cap or to a bridge nucleus depending on temperature, contact angle, and pore size. Using the classical nucleation theory, for both mechanisms, the typical induction time is shown to scale with the pore volume to surface ratio and hence the pore size. These findings for the critical nucleus and nucleation rate associated with such complex transitions provide a means to rationalize and predict methane hydrate formation in any porous media from simple thermodynamic data.

Intra-cage dynamics of molecular hydrogen confined in cages of two different dimensions of clathrate hydrates.

Project description:In porous materials the molecular confinement is often realized by means of weak Van der Waals interactions between the molecule and the pore surface. The understanding of the mechanism of such interactions is important for a number of applications. In order to establish the role of the confinement size we have studied the microscopic dynamics of molecular hydrogen stored in the nanocages of clathrate hydrates of two different dimensions. We have found that by varying the size of the pore the diffusive mobility of confined hydrogen can be modified in both directions, i.e. reduced or enhanced compared to that in the bulk solid at the same temperatures. In the small cages with a mean crystallographic radius of 3.95 Å the confinement reduces diffusive mobility by orders of magnitude. In contrast, in large cages with a mean radius of 4.75 Å hydrogen molecules displays diffusive jump motion between different equilibrium sites inside the cages, visible at temperatures where bulk H2 is solid. The localization of H2 molecules observed in small cages can promote improved functional properties valuable for hydrogen storage applications.

Surface modification of mesostructured cellular foam to enhance hydrogen storage in binary THF/H2 clathrate hydrate.

Project description:This study introduces solid-state tuning of a mesostructured cellular foam (MCF) to enhance hydrogen (H2) storage in clathrate hydrates. Grafting of promoter-like molecules (e.g., tetrahydrofuran) at the internal surface of the MCF resulted in a substantial improvement in the kinetics of formation of binary H2-THF clathrate hydrate. Identification of the confined hydrate as sII clathrate hydrate and enclathration of H2 in its small cages was performed using XRD and high-pressure 1H NMR spectroscopy respectively. Experimental findings show that modified MCF materials exhibit a ∼1.3 times higher H2 storage capacity as compared to non-modified MCF under the same conditions (7 MPa, 265 K, 100% pore volume saturation with a 5.56 mol% THF solution). The enhancement in H2 storage is attributed to the hydrophobicity originating from grafting organic molecules onto pristine MCF, thereby influencing water interactions and fostering an environment conducive to H2 enclathration. Gas uptake curves indicate an optimal tuning point for higher H2 storage, favoring a lower density of carbon per nm2. Furthermore, a direct correlation emerges between higher driving forces and increased H2 storage capacity, culminating at 0.52 wt% (46.77 mmoles of H2 per mole of H2O and 39.78% water-to-hydrate conversions) at 262 K for the modified MCF material with fewer carbons per nm2. Notably, the substantial H2 storage capacity achieved without energy-intensive processes underscores solid-state tuning's potential for H2 storage in the synthesized hydrates. This study evaluated two distinct kinetic models to describe hydrate growth in MCF. The multistage kinetic model showed better predictive capabilities for experimental data and maintained a low average absolute deviation. This research provides valuable insights into augmenting H2 storage capabilities and holds promising implications for future advancements.

Building a Cost-Efficient High-Pressure Cell for Online High-Field NMR and MRI Using Standard Static Probe Heads: An In Situ Demonstration on Clathrate Hydrate Formation.

Project description:High-pressure nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy finds remarkable applications in catalysis, protein biochemistry and biophysics, analytical chemistry, material science, energy, and environmental control but requires expensive probe heads and/or sample cells. This contribution describes the design, construction, and testing of a low-cost 5 mm NMR tube suitable for high-pressure NMR measurements of up to 30 MPa. The sample cell comprises a standard, 5 mm single-crystal sapphire tube that has been fitted to a section of a relatively inexpensive polyether ether ketone (PEEK) HPLC column. PEEK HPLC tubing and connectors enable integration with a gas rig or a standard HPLC pump located outside the stray field of the magnet. The cell is compatible with any 5 mm static NMR probe head, exhibits almost zero background in NMR experiments, and is compatible with any liquid, gas, temperature, or pressure range encountered in HPLC experimentation. A specifically designed transport case enables the safe handling of the pressurized tube outside the probe head. The performance of the setup was evaluated using in situ high-field NMR spectroscopy and MRI performed during the formation of bulk and nanoconfined clathrate hydrates occluding methane, ethane, and hydrogen.

Encapsulation kinetics and dynamics of carbon monoxide in clathrate hydrate.

Project description:Carbon monoxide clathrate hydrate is a potentially important constituent in the solar system. In contrast to the well-established relation between the size of gaseous molecule and hydrate structure, previous work showed that carbon monoxide molecules preferentially form structure-I rather than structure-II gas hydrate. Resolving this discrepancy is fundamentally important to understanding clathrate formation, structure stabilization and the role the dipole moment/molecular polarizability plays in these processes. Here we report the synthesis of structure-II carbon monoxide hydrate under moderate high-pressure/low-temperature conditions. We demonstrate that the relative stability between structure-I and structure-II hydrates is primarily determined by kinetically controlled cage filling and associated binding energies. Within hexakaidecahedral cage, molecular dynamic simulations of density distributions reveal eight low-energy wells forming a cubic geometry in favour of the occupancy of carbon monoxide molecules, suggesting that the carbon monoxide-water and carbon monoxide-carbon monoxide interactions with adjacent cages provide a significant source of stability for the structure-II clathrate framework.

Methane hydrate efficient formation in a 3D-rGO/SDBS composite.

Project description:The optimization of storage space and material composition can significantly improve the generation rate and storage capacity of methane hydrate, which is important for the industrial application of solidified natural gas (SNG) technology. In our report, the effects of the presence of SDBS (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate), GO (graphene oxide), 3D-rGO (3D-reduced graphene oxide) and 3D-rGO/SDBS (3D-reduced graphene oxide/sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) on the methane hydrate generation process are investigated. The results show that the heterogeneous effect on the solid-phase surface of 3D-rGO/SDBS and its interconnected three-dimensional (3D) structure can achieve rapid nucleation. In addition, the presence of 3D-rGO/SDBS can increase the dissolution and dispersion of gas in solution and further enhance the gas-liquid mass transfer, thus realizing efficient methane storage. The maximum methane storage capacity of 188 v/vw is obtained with 600 ppm of 3D-rGO/SDBS in water, reaching 87% of the theoretical maximum storage capacity. The addition of 3D-rGO/SDBS also significantly reduces the induction time and accelerates the formation rate of methane hydrate. This study reveals that 3D graphene materials have excellent kinetic promotion effects on methane hydrate formation, explores and enriches the hydrate-promoting mechanism, and provides essential data and theoretical basis for the research of new promoters in the field of SNG technology.

Elasticity and Stability of Clathrate Hydrate: Role of Guest Molecule Motions.

Project description:Molecular dynamic simulations were performed to determine the elastic constants of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) hydrates at one hundred pressure-temperature data points, respectively. The conditions represent marine sediments and permafrost zones where gas hydrates occur. The shear modulus and Young's modulus of the CO2 hydrate increase anomalously with increasing temperature, whereas those of the CH4 hydrate decrease regularly with increase in temperature. We ascribe this anomaly to the kinetic behavior of the linear CO2 molecule, especially those in the small cages. The cavity space of the cage limits free rotational motion of the CO2 molecule at low temperature. With increase in temperature, the CO2 molecule can rotate easily, and enhance the stability and rigidity of the CO2 hydrate. Our work provides a key database for the elastic properties of gas hydrates, and molecular insights into stability changes of CO2 hydrate from high temperature of ~5 °C to low decomposition temperature of ~-150 °C.
