Project description:Inbreeding depression is widely regarded as a driving force in the evolution of dispersal, mate choice and sperm selection. However, due to likely costs of inbreeding avoidance, which are poorly understood, it is unclear to what extent selection to avoid inbreeding is expected in nature. Moreover, there are currently very few empirical estimates of the strength of selection against the act of inbreeding (mating with a relative), as opposed to the fitness costs of being inbred. Here, we use data from the individual-based study of red deer on the Scottish island of Rum, a strongly polygynous system which harbours a large inbreeding load, to estimate selection against the act of inbreeding for each sex. We use pedigree and genomic estimates of relatedness between individuals and measure fitness using both lifetime breeding success (number of calves born) and lifetime reproductive success (number of calves surviving to independence), with the latter incorporating inbreeding depression in calf survival. We find for both sexes that the repeatability of the act of inbreeding was low (< 0.1), suggesting little among-individual variation for this trait on which selection can act. Using the genomic measures, there was significant selection against the act of inbreeding in males, but not in females, and there was considerable uncertainty in the estimate in both sexes. We discuss possible explanations for these patterns and their implications for understanding the evolution of inbreeding avoidance in natural populations.

Project description:Inbreeding avoidance among interacting females and males is not always observed despite inbreeding depression in offspring fitness, creating an apparent "inbreeding paradox." This paradox could be resolved if selection against inbreeding was in fact weak, despite inbreeding depression. However, the net magnitude and direction of selection on the degree to which females and males inbreed by pairing with relatives has not been explicitly estimated. We used long-term pedigree data to estimate phenotypic selection gradients on the degree of inbreeding that female and male song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) expressed by forming socially persistent breeding pairs with relatives. Fitness was measured as the total numbers of offspring and grand offspring contributed to the population, and as corresponding expected numbers of identical-by-descent allele copies, thereby accounting for variation in offspring survival, reproduction, and relatedness associated with variation in parental inbreeding. Estimated selection gradients on the degree to which individuals paired with relatives were weakly positive in females, but negative in males that formed at least one socially persistent pairing. However, males that paired had higher mean fitness than males that remained socially unpaired. These analyses suggest that net selection against inbreeding may be weak in both sexes despite strong inbreeding depression, thereby resolving the "inbreeding paradox."

Project description:Abstract Poster session 1, September 21, 2022, 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Introduction Protothecosis is an emergent disease caused by members of the genus Prototheca. Most such infections probably occurred by traumática inoculation into subcutaneous tissues. Objectives It is to report a case of human cutaneous protothecosis identified in the state of Maranhão, northeast Brazil. Case report: 75-year-old patient, Merchant, from the municipality of São Luís Island, Northeastern Brazil. He sought care referring to an erythematous and painful lesion on the left arm that started 6 months before the treatment. On examination, he presented an infiltrative, hyperemic lesion with burning pain throughout the upper limb (Fig. 1). The patient reported that a week before the onset of the condition, he suffered trauma on the arm, with a laceration in the skin, while cleaning a sewage system with clay pipes. During the healing process, he noticed a hyperemic, slightly pruritic lesion measuring 2 cm which did not improve. He sought medical assistance at the dermatological service, who suspected dermatophytosis, initiating treatment with terbinafine (250 mg, once a day), evolving with worsening of the lesion. A lesion biopsy was indicated, to histopathological examination, which showed circular, moniliform structures, diagnosed as protothecosis (Fig. 2). Treatment with itraconazole (200 mg/day) was started, with no therapeutic response and the lesion spread throughout the patient's left upper limb. Submitted to a new investigation with biopsy for direct research and culture for fungi, being identified Prototheca Wicherhamii, by Maldi-Tof®, with sensitivity to itraconazole and ampfotericin B. PCR amplification of the genetic material obtained in the clinical isolate was performed with purification of its product, and sequencing showed genetic similarity of 97,46% with Prototheca Wickerhamii. The sequence obtained was deposited in Genbank under number MZ409514. In the absence of therapeutic response to itraconazole (400 mg/day), and significant worsening of the lesion, with presentation of a secondary infection caused by Staphylococcus haemoliticus, treatment with Clindamycin (900 mg/day for 10 days) and Liposomal Amphotericin B (4 mg/kg/day for 45 days) were performed. After suspension of Liposomal Amphotericin B, the lesions recurred in 15 days, and voriconazole (200 mg 12/12 h) was prescribed for 6 months, with complete regression of the lesions. Currently, he is free of injuries, having been followed up every 6 months. Conclusion Rare disease caused by chlorophyllous algae may be surprising due to the severity and lack of response to antifungals that show sensitivity in vitro.

Project description:We describe a case of extensive human cutaneous protothecosis in the northeastern of Brazil. The diagnosis was made through histopathological examination of skin samples and culturing on Sabouraud dextrose agar, with identification through mass spectrometry. Treatment with itraconazole failed and was switched to liposomal amphotericin followed by voriconazole with clinical cure. Prothotecosis should be a diagnostic hypothesis when there are skin lesions after trauma, specially in situations of atypical evolution.

Project description:The carbon dioxide flux through the air-water interface of coastal estuarine systems must be quantified to understand the regional balance of carbon and its transport through adjacent coastal regions. We estimated and calculated the emissions of carbon dioxide (FCO?) and the partial pressure of CO? (pCO?) values in 28 estuarine environments at a variety of spatial scales in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil. The results showed a mean FCO? (water to air) of 55 ± 45?mmol·m(-2)·d(-1). Additionally, a negative correlation between dissolved oxygen saturation and pCO? was observed, indicating a control by biological processes and especially by organic matter degradation. This leads to increased dissolved CO? concentration in estuarine waters which results in a pCO? that reached 8,638??atm. Our study suggests that northern and northeastern Brazilian estuaries act as sources of atmospheric CO?. The range of pCO? observed were similar to those found in inner estuaries in other places around the world, with the exception of a few semi-arid estuaries (Köppen climate classification - BSh) in which record low levels of pCO? have been detected.

Project description:The aim of this study was to identify prevalence and factors associated with violent behavior among adolescents in Aracaju and Metropolitan region. The study included 2207 adolescents (16.03±1.08 years old) enrolled in high schools of the State Public Network. Violent behavior was identified from question 14 of the YRBS-2007 questionnaire with responses categorized as "never" and "one or more times." Higher prevalence in males in relation to risk factors for adoption of violent behavior was found: cigarette consumption (7.3%), alcohol consumption (39.1%), and marijuana use (3.4%). Data analysis used descriptive statistics and logistic regression with hierarchical model at two levels: (a) sociodemographic variables and (b) behavioral variables. For both sexes, association between violent behavior and cigarette smoking (OR=3.77, CI 95%=2.06-6.92 and OR=1.99, CI 95%=1.04 to 3.81, male and female, resp.) and alcohol consumption (OR=3.38, CI 95%=2.22 to 5.16 and OR=1.83, CI 95%=1.28 to 2.63, male and female, resp.) was verified. It was concluded that violent behavior is associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes among adolescents.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Prisoners, in general, exhibit unsatisfactory oral conditions, especially with regard to the large number of missing teeth and with untreated caries. The aim of this study was to assess tooth loss, use of and need for prosthetic rehabilitation, and use of dental services among inmates. A cross-sectional study involving 65 inmates was developed at the Regional Women's Prison of Campina Grande, Brazil. Data regarding sociodemographic and sentencing profile, use of dental services, dental morbidity, and self-perceived oral health impacts were investigated. Chi-square, Pearson, and Kruskal-Wallis (P < 0.05) statistical tests were used. The mean tooth loss was 11.3 teeth. Significant association between tooth loss and oral health satisfaction (P = 0.049), self-perceived need for dental prosthesis (P < 0.001), uncomfortable teeth brushing (P = 0.005), difficult speaking (P = 0.002), and difficulty in performing routine tasks (P = 0.025) was observed. It was observed that 29.2% of inmates were using some type of prosthesis, all deemed unsuitable for use, and 78.5% of inmates needed prosthetic rehabilitation. The oral health condition of the population studied was found to be poor, and prisoners showed significant tooth loss and need for dentures, with the aggravation of having tooth extraction as the major reason for seeking dental care.

Project description:We analyzed the patterns of infection by helminths in populations of the Gymnophthalmidae lizard Dryadosaura nordestina from three Atlantic Forest fragments in Northeast Brazil. Prevalence and mean intensity of infection by location showed the following results: ARIE Mata de Goiamunduba (60.8 % and 10.4 ± 8), RPPN Engenho Gargaú (83.3 % and 20.8 ± 19.7) and Benjamim Maranhão Botanical Garden (70.4 % and 7.78 ± 5.8). We provide the first records of helminth infection for the lizard D. nordestina, in which three species of nematodes, Aplectana sp., Cosmocerca sp. and Physaloptera lutzi and one trematode Haplometroides odhneri were recovered. Trematodes of the genus Haplometroides were previously known as parasites only in snake and amphisbaenian hosts in South America. Now, our study provides the first record of a species belonging to this genus parasitizing lizards. In conclusion, our study shows that D. nordestina have a depleted helminth fauna (three species at maximum), similar to other studies with lizards of this family in Brazil and that its parasite abundance is related to host snout-vent length, but not to the sex.

Project description:This study applies the perspective of intersectionality, defined as social identities combining with one another and with structural societal factors to produce health inequities, to assess the interaction between race, gender, and common mental disorders (CMD) in northeastern Brazil. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire was used to assess CMD among a representative sample of adults in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil (N=3273). Four groups (Black men, Black women, White women, White men) represented the intersection of race and gender. We used a Chi square test to compare the four groups and Poisson regressions to determine prevalence ratios (PR). White men had the lowest prevalence of CMD (11.1%) and Black women had the highest (37.2%). After adjusting for covariates, Black women had a statistically significantly higher prevalence of CMD than White men (PR=2.43; 95% CI: 1.39-4.25), though the prevalence among White women was not statistically significantly different from White men (PR=1.74; 95% CI: .93-3.30). Interaction tests were conducted on the multiplicative and additive scale, although the results were not statistically significant. These findings indicate that the experience of being both Black and a woman in Brazil is associated with elevated prevalence of CMD. Programs and interventions are needed to address this burden and research is needed to further explore its cause.
