Multiple evidences reveal new species and a new record of smelly Gymnopus (Agaricales, Omphalotaceae) from China.

ABSTRACT: Gymnopus sect. Impudicae is a poorly studied group around the world. However, it is well known for its pungent smell-a total of five species from China belonging to sect. Impudicae were recorded, and included four species new to science-G. epiphyllus, G. cystidiosus, G. subdensilamellatus, and G. subpolyphyllus-which were delimited and proposed based on morphological and molecular evidences, and one new record from Henan, Jiangxi, and Gansu Province, China-G. densilamellatus. Detailed descriptions and illustrations were presented as well as comparisons to similar species. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from the ITS and nLSU dataset supported the Gymnopus as a monophyletic genus which was defined by Oliveira et al., and the novel species grouped as separate lineages within it. A Key to the reported species of Gymnopus sect. Impudicae is also provided.

Project description:Based on phylogenetic analyses, some newly studied Chinese mushroom specimens were found to represent two distinct species within the genus Gymnopus. Along with G.fusipes (sect. Gymnopus) they form a distinct clade with high support, although their macromorphological characters seem to be closer to members of Gymnopus sect. Levipedes or sect. Vestipedes (Collybiopsis). When examined in detail, their micromorphological characters, especially the type of pileipellis, support them as new members of G. sect. Gymnopus. Therefore, two new species, G.omphalinoides and G.schizophyllus, and the emended circumscription of sect. Gymnopus are proposed in this paper. Detailed morphological descriptions, colour photos, illustrations of the two new species, morphological comparisons with similar taxa and the molecular-phylogenetic analyses of the combined nrITS and nrLSU data are presented. A key to the known species of G. sect. Gymnopus is also presented.

Morpho-Molecular Evidence Reveals Four Novel Species of Gymnopus (Agaricales, Omphalotaceae) from China.

Project description:Nine collections of gymnopoid fungi were studied based on morpho-molecular characteristics. The macromorphology was made according to the photograph of fresh basidiomata and field notes, while the micromorphology was examined via an optical microscope. Simultaneously, the phylogenetic analyses were performed by maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods based on a combined dataset of nrITS1-nr5.8S-nrITS2-nrLSU sequences. Integrated analysis of these results was therefore, G. efibulatus belonging to sect. Androsacei, G. iodes and G. sinopolyphyllus belonging to sect. Impudicae and G. strigosipes belonging to sect. Levipedes are proposed as new to science. The detailed descriptions, colour photos of basidiomata and line-drawings of microscopic structures are provided. The comparisons with closely related species and a key to known species of Gymnopus s. str. reported with morpho-molecular evidence in China is also given.

Three new species and a new record of ConocybesectionPilosellae (Bolbitiaceae, Agaricales) from Jilin Province, China.

Project description:This study is based on the phylogenetic framework of ConocybesectionPilosellae and incorporates materials from Jilin Province. A systematic phylogenetic tree was constructed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (nrLSU), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α) sequences. As a result, three new species were discovered in Jilin Province: Conocybeverna, which emerges in broad-leaved forests during spring; C.angulispora, characterized by angular and submitriform or slightly hexagonal basidiospores; and C.rubrocyanea, with basidiomata displaying a reddish hue when fresh and a bluish hue when dry. Additionally, a new record for China, C.hexagonospora was identified, characterized by the lack of distinct pubescence on the pileus and slightly hexagonal basidiospores, increasing the total number of species within sect. Pilosellae to 22. Key for sect. Pilosellae is provided, accompanied by morphological descriptions and line drawings for the new species and a new record for China.

Morphological and Molecular Evidence Reveal Eight New Species of Gymnopus from Northeast China.

Project description:Gymnopus is a widely distributed genus consisting of about 300 species thus far, including Gymnopus fusipes as a generic type. A total of nine species from China belong to the sect. Levipedes, including eight new species—Gymnopus longisterigmaticus, Gymnopus longus, Gymnopus macrosporus, Gymnopus striatus, Gymnopus changbaiensis, Gymnopus tomentosus, Gymnopus tiliicola, and Gymnopus globulosus—which were delimited and proposed based on morphological and molecular evidence; and one new record from Jilin Province, China—Gymnopus erythropus. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are presented, as well as comparisons to similar species. Overall, our results broaden the morphological characterization of the genus. The pileipellis of sect. Levipedes typically takes on the “Dryophila structure”, while, in our findings, pileipellis terminal hyphae inflated to spherical to prolate were observed, in addition to extremely long basidia sterigma. The phylogenies inferred from the ITS and nLSU dataset supported the Gymnopus, which was defined by Oliveira et al. as a monophyletic genus, and the novel species as separate lineages within. A key to all species described in this study is also provided.

Taxonomic study of Collybiopsis (Omphalotaceae, Agaricales) in the Republic of Korea with seven new species.

Project description:Collybiopsis is a genus of the gymnopoid/marasmioid complex of the family Omphalotaceae. The classification system of Collybiopsis has recently undergone large changes through molecular approaches. The new classification system has not been applied for Collybiopsis in the Republic of Korea, and general research on this genus was also lacking. In this study, we analyzed the Collybiopsis species in the Republic of Korea by assessing all gymnopoid/marasmioid specimens collected nationwide for ten years by combining morphological approaches and multilocus (ITS + nrLSU) phylogenetic analysis. We thus confirmed that 16 species of Collybiopsis are present in the Republic of Korea, including two previously unreported species (Co.nonnulla and Co.dichroa) and seven new species (Co.albicantipes sp. nov., Co.clavicystidiata sp. nov., Co.fulva sp. nov., Co.orientisubnuda sp. nov., Co.subumbilicata sp. nov., Co.undulata sp. nov., and Co.vellerea sp. nov.). A thorough examination of the Collybiopsis suggested that it is difficult to distinguish or identify the species based on morphological characteristics only; a combined molecular approach is needed for accurate identification. The Collybiopsis database of the Republic of Korea is updated, and information on the new species is provided. Five new combinations from Marasmiellus to Collybiopsis are also proposed (Co.istanbulensis comb. nov., Co.koreana comb. nov., Co.omphalodes comb. nov., Co.pseudomphalodes comb. nov., and Co.ramuliciola comb. nov.).

Taxonomy and phylogeny of European Gymnopus subsection Levipedes (Basidiomycota, Omphalotaceae).

Project description:The systematic integrity of European Gymnopus subsect. Levipedes is verified based on anatomic-morphological characters with support from DNA sequences of ITS and translation elongation factor 1-alpha genes. Seven species (G. alpinus, G. aquosus, G. dryophilus - including var. lanipes, G. erythropus, G. fagiphilus, G. hybridus, and G. ocior) belonging to this subsection are included. We clarify the concepts of G. dryophilus and G. ocior, which were occasionally confused in older literature. Due to unavailability of previously selected neotype of G. dryophilus the substitute neotype specimen is selected. Gymnopus dryophilus var. lanipes is confirmed as a variety; no important differences from nominotypical variability were detected. All discriminative characters used for identification of these species are discussed in detail. An identification key is also provided.

Morphological and molecular identification of two new Marasmiellus species (Omphalotaceae, Agaricales) from Thailand.

Project description:Marasmiellus (Omphalotaceae, Agaricales) specimens collected in Thailand were investigated based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses. In the present study, two species are introduced as new to science, namely Marasmiellusthailandicus and M.minutisporus. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out based on the internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and nuclear ribosomal RNA large subunit (nrLSU) regions, and the results revealed that the two new taxa are distinct species within Marasmiellus. Another specimen was identified as M.scandens and is reported for the first time with morphology and molecular data from Thailand. Descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic results are provided. In addition, M.diaphanus and M.colocasiae are proposed as new combinations of Collybiopsisdiaphana and Paramarasmiuscolocasiae, respectively, based on the phylogenetic evidence.

Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses revealed two new species from China and a new record from Jilin Province of Agaricales.

Project description:In this study, we have found two new species-Strophariasubrugosoannulata and Strophariamicroaeruginosa. Phylogenetic analyses, based on the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) and the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nrLSU), suggest that the two new species are distinct and monophyletic. S.subrugosoannulata is distinguished from other species of the genus Stropharia by the pileus covered with greyish-orange squamules in the centre, stipe light brown and surface covered with white triangular squamules. S.microaeruginosa differs from other species in its pileus bluish-grey when young becoming lighter towards margins, later greyish-turquoise lightens towards the edges and surface radially striate when young, lamellae adnate to subdecurrent, stipe with white squamules at the base, acanthocytes absent. The new record species from Jilin Province, Clitolyophyllumumbilicatum was also confirmed, based on morphological and molecular study. Here, we have given full descriptions of each species, colour images, illustrations and two phylogenetic trees that show the placement and relationship of the two new species and the new record are provided.

Four new species of Cortinariaceae (Agaricales) from Northwestern China.

Project description:IntroductionCortinariaceae, which belongs to the Agaricales order, is a globally recognized family, known for its high species diversity.MethodsEight internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuclear large ribosomal subunit (LSU) sequences were newly generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed by combining ITS and LSU datasets. Four species were identified as forming four independent lineages with robust support in phylogenies based on both datasets.ResultsThese new species in the taxa, Cortinarius gansuensis, Cortinarius tricholomoidus, Cortinarius vinoso-griseum, and Phlegmacium subcalyptratum from Northwestern China are described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. Cortinarius gansuensis is characterized by a convex and brownish vinaceous pileus, generative hyphae with clamp connections, and ellipsoid basidiospores (8.5-10.6 μm × 5.4-6.8 μm); Cortinarius tricholomoidus is characterized by a broadly umbonate and snuff brown pileus, generative hyphae with clamp connections, and broadly ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores (7.4-8.5 μm × 6.2-7.3 μm); Cortinarius vinoso-griseum is characterized by a violaceous gray pileus, generative hyphae with clamp connections, and smaller basidiospores (7.5-9.7 μm × 5.6-7.8 μm); and Phlegmacium subcalyptratum is characterized by a small and apricot-orange pileus, generative hyphae with clamp connections, and fusiform basidiospores (10.0-12.7 μm × 5.6-6.8 μm).DiscussionFull descriptions, illustrations, and results of phylogenetic analyses of the four species along with discussions on related species are provided.

Morphology and Molecular Phylogeny Reveal Five New Species of Laccaria (Hydnangiaceae, Agaricales) from Southern China.

Project description:The genus Laccaria is a type of cosmopolitan and ecologically important fungal group. Members can form ectomycorrhizal associations with numerous trees, and some species are common edible fungi in local markets. Although some new species from China are recently published, the species diversity of Laccaria is still unclear in China. In this study, some samples of Laccaria were collected from southern China, and morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses based on the multilocus dataset of ITS-LSU-tef1-rpb2 confirmed five new species. Laccaria miniata, L. nanlingensis and L. neovinaceoavellanea were collected from subtropical broad-leaved forests, and L. rufobrunnea and L. umbilicata were collected from subtropical mixed forests of southwest China. Full descriptions, illustrations, comparisons with similar species and phylogenetic analysis are provided.
