Various microbial metabolisms use H<sup>+</sup>/Na<sup>+</sup>-translocating ferredoxin:NAD<sup>+</sup> reductase (Rnf) either to exergonically oxidize reduced ferredoxin by NAD<sup>+</sup> for generating a transmembrane electrochemical potential or reversely to exploit the latter for producing reduced ferredoxin.
