Project description:The recently introduced perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology is a promising candidate for providing low-cost energy for future demands. However, one major concern with the technology can be traced back to morphological defects in the electron selective layer (ESL), which deteriorates the solar cell performance. Pinholes in the ESL may lead to an increased surface recombination rate for holes, if the perovskite absorber layer is in contact with the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate via the pinholes. In this work, we used sol-gel-derived mesoporous TiO2 thin films prepared by block co-polymer templating in combination with dip coating as a model system for investigating the effect of ESL pinholes on the photovoltaic performance of planar heterojunction PSCs. We studied TiO2 films with different porosities and film thicknesses, and observed that the induced pinholes only had a minor impact on the device performance. This suggests that having narrow pinholes with a diameter of about 10 nm in the ESL is in fact not detrimental for the device performance and can even, to some extent improve their performance. A probable reason for this is that the narrow pores in the ordered structure do not allow the perovskite crystals to form interconnected pathways to the underlying FTO substrate. However, for ultrathin (~20 nm) porous layers, an incomplete ESL surface coverage of the FTO layer will further deteriorate the device performance.

Project description:A power conversion efficiency of over 20% has been achieved in CH3NH3PbI3-based perovskite solar cells (PSC), however, low thermal stability associated with the presence of a phase transition between tetragonal and cubic structures near room temperature is a major issue that must be overcome for future practical applications. Here, the influence of the phase transition on the thermal stability of PSCs is investigated in detail by comparing four kinds of perovskite films with different compositions of halogen atoms and organic components. Thermally stimulated current measurements reveal that a large number of carrier traps are generated in solar cells with the perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 as a light absorber after operation at 85 °C, which is higher than the phase-transition temperature. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements further exclude effects of a possible morphology change on the formation of carrier traps. These carrier traps are detrimental to the thermal stability. The thermogravimetric analysis does not show a decomposition for any of the materials in the temperature range relevant for operation. The perovskite alloys do not have this phase transition, resulting in effectively suppressed formation of carrier traps. PSCs with improved thermal stability under the standard thermal cycling test are demonstrated.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) have been considered one of the competitive next generation power sources. To date, light-to-electric conversion efficiencies have rapidly increased to over 10%, and further improvements are expected. However, the poor device reproducibility of PeSCs ascribed to their inhomogeneously covered film morphology has hindered their practical application. Here, we demonstrate high-performance PeSCs with superior reproducibility by introducing small amounts of N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (CHP) as a morphology controller into N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). As a result, highly homogeneous film morphology, similar to that achieved by vacuum-deposition methods, as well as a high PCE of 10% and an extremely small performance deviation within 0.14% were achieved. This study represents a method for realizing efficient and reproducible planar heterojunction (PHJ) PeSCs through morphology control, taking a major step forward in the low-cost and rapid production of PeSCs by solving one of the biggest problems of PHJ perovskite photovoltaic technology through a facile method.

Project description:The achievement of perfect light absorption in ultrathin semiconductor materials is not only a long-standing goal, but also a critical challenge for solar energy applications, and thus requires a redesigned strategy. Here, a general strategy is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally to create a planar metasurface absorber comprising a 1D ultrathin planar semiconductor film (replacing the 2D array of subwavelength elements in classical metasurfaces), a transparent spacer, and a metallic back reflector. Guided by derived formulisms, a new type of macroscopic planar metasurface absorber is experimentally demonstrated with light near-perfectly and exclusively absorbed by the ultrathin semiconductor film. To demonstrate the power and simplicity of this strategy, a prototype of a planar metasurface solar cell is experimentally demonstrated. Furthermore, the device model predicts that a colored planar metasurface perovskite solar cell can maintain 75% of the efficiency of its black counterpart despite the use of a perovskite film that is one order of magnitude thinner. The displayed cell colors have high purities comparable to those of state-of-the-art color filters, and are insensitive to viewing angles up to 60°. The general theoretical framework in conjunction with experimental demonstrations lays the foundation for designing miniaturized, planar, and multifunctional solar cells and optoelectronic devices.

Project description:The performance of perovskite solar cells has been progressing over the past few years and efficiency is likely to continue to increase. However, a negative aspect for the integration of perovskite solar cells in the built environment is that the color gamut available in these materials is very limited and does not cover the green-to-blue region of the visible spectrum, which has been a big selling point for organic photovoltaics. Here, we integrate a porous photonic crystal (PC) scaffold within the photoactive layer of an opaque perovskite solar cell following a bottom-up approach employing inexpensive and scalable liquid processing techniques. The photovoltaic devices presented herein show high efficiency with tunable color across the visible spectrum. This now imbues the perovskite solar cells with highly desirable properties for cladding in the built environment and encourages design of sustainable colorful buildings and iridescent electric vehicles as future power generation sources.

Project description:Well-organized zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles forming mesoporous materials have been successfully synthesized via a facile micelle-templating method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a structure-directing template to control the nucleation/growth process and porosity. The systematic use of such a surfactant in combination with a microwave-assisted solvothermal (cyclohexane/water) reaction enabled the control of pore size in a narrow-size distribution range (3-17 nm). The effect of solvent mixture ratio on the porosity of the synthesized oxide was determined, and the controlled growth of zirconia nanoparticles was confirmed by means of powder X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as N2 physisorption isotherm analysis. Then, the as-prepared nanostructured zirconia oxides were treated with sulfuric acid to have sulfated samples. The catalytic performances of these mesoporous zirconia nanoparticles and their sulfated samples were tested for levulinic acid (LA) esterification by ethanol, with quantitative conversions of LA to ethyl levulinate after 8 h of reaction.

Project description:The synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles with control over size and shape has long been an area of research, with iron oleate being arguably the most successful precursor. Issues with reproducibility and versatility in iron oleate-based syntheses remain, however, in large part due to the mutable nature of its structure and stoichiometry. In this work, we characterize two new forms of iron oleate precursor that can be isolated in large quantities, show long-term stability, and have well-defined stoichiometry, leading to reproducible and predictable reactivity. Synthesis with these precursors is shown to produce iron oxide nanoparticles in a tunable size range of 4-16 nm with low size dispersity and properties consistent with magnetite in the superparamagnetic size regime.

Project description:For photovoltaic devices based on hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite thin films, the cell architecture is a vital parameter in defining the macroscopic performance. However, the understanding of the correlation between architecture and carrier dynamics in perovskite thin films has remained elusive. In this work, we utilize concerted materials characterization and optical measurements to investigate the role of chloride addition in PSC devices with two different architectures. Perovskite thin films, prepared with varying ratios of methylammonium halide MACl : MAI (0 : 1, 0.5 : 1, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1), were coated on either planar or mesoporous TiO2/FTO substrates. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that with increasing the ratio of the Cl- precursor, there is an increasing preferential directional growth of the perovskite film in both configurations. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy was applied to investigate the electron injection dynamics from the photoexcited perovskites to the TiO2. It is found that the interfacial electron injection rate from perovskite to planar TiO2 is accelerated with increasing Cl- content, which explains the increased power conversion efficiencies using Cl--modified perovskites as photoactive materials. In contrast, Cl- addition demonstrate no discernable influence on electron injection to mesoporous TiO2, suggesting the interfacial charge recombination rather than electron injection give rise to the improved performance observed in the mesoporous configuration. The results presented here, provide a deeper understanding of the mechanism of chloride addition to MAPbI3 solar cells with different architectures.

Project description:The charge carrier lifetime is an important parameter in solar cells as it defines, together with the mobility, the diffusion length of the charge carriers, thus directly determining the optimal active layer thickness of a device. Herein, we report on charge carrier lifetime values in bromine doped planar methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) solar cells determined by transient photovoltage. The corresponding charge carrier density has been derived from charge carrier extraction. We found increased lifetime values in solar cells incorporating bromine compared to pure MAPbI3 by a factor of ~2.75 at an illumination intensity corresponding to 1 sun. In the bromine containing solar cells we additionally observe an anomalously high value of extracted charge, which we deduce to originate from mobile ions.

Project description:Perovskite CsPbI3 quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized as a hole-transporting layer (HTL) of a planar perovskite solar cell (PSC). By using the Octam solution during the ligand engineering, CsPbI3 QDs exhibits a denser grain and a larger grain size due to the short-chain ligands of Octam. In addition, CsPbI3 QDs with the Octam solution showed a smooth and uniform surface on MAPbI3 film, indicating the QDs improved the microstructure of the MAPbI3 perovskite film. As a result, the PSC with CsPbI3 QDs as an HTL has the optimal open-circuit voltage as 1.09 V, the short-circuit current as 20.5 mA/cm2, and the fill factor (FF) as 75.7%, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) as 17.0%. Hence, it is inferred that introducing QDs as a HTL via the ligand engineering can effectively improve the device performance of the PSC.
