VEGF Polymorphism rs3025039 and Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus 1 (HTLV-1) Infection among Older Japanese Individuals: A Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT: Previous studies have reported a close correlation between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which plays an important role in angiogenesis, and human T-cell leukemia virus 1 (HTLV-1). However, an association between genetic characteristics related to VEGF and HTLV-1 infection has not yet been reported. Because the VEGF polymorphism rs3025039 is inversely associated with serum concentrations of VEGF, we focus on rs3025039 in the present study. To clarify the association between the VEGF polymorphism rs3025039 and HTLV-1 infection, a cross-sectional study of 1924 Japanese individuals aged 60-79 years who participated in general health check-ups was conducted. Using logistic regression, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for HTLV-1 infection in relation to rs3025039 genotype were calculated with adjustment for known confounders. Compared with rs3025039 CC-homozygotes, (T) allele carriers had a significantly lower OR for HTLV-1 infection. The adjusted OR and 95% CI for HTLV-1 infection was 0.70 (0.54-0.91) (p = 0.009). Genetic characteristics related to lower angiogenesis activity might be associated with a lower chance of establishing HTLV-1 infection. Although further investigation is necessary, angiogenesis might play a crucial role in the establishment of HTLV-1 infection.

Project description:Participation in a sports group is key for the prevention of incident functional disability. Little is known about the correlates of older adults' participation in sports groups, although this could assist with the development of effective health strategies. The purpose of this study was to identify the demographic and biological, psychosocial, behavioral, social and cultural, and environmental correlates of sports group participation among Japanese older adults.Data were obtained from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation study, which was a population-based cohort of people aged ≥65 years without disability enrolled from 31 municipalities across Japan (n = 78,002). Poisson regression analysis was used to determine the associations between the factors and participation in sports groups.Non-regular participation in sports groups was associated with lower educational level, being employed, and working the longest in the agricultural/forestry/fishery industry among the demographic and biological factors and poor self-rated health and depression among the psychosocial factors. Of the behavioral factors, current smoking was negatively associated and current drinking was positively associated with regular participation in sports groups. Among the social and cultural factors, having emotional social support and participating in hobby clubs, senior citizen clubs, or volunteer groups were associated with a high prevalence of participation in sports groups. Perceptions of the presence of parks or sidewalks, good access to shops, and good accessibility to facilities were positively associated with participation in sports groups among the environmental factors.Our study suggests that the promotion of activities that could increase older adults' participation in sports groups should consider a broad range of demographic and biological, psychosocial, behavioral, social and cultural, and environmental factors. Although future longitudinal studies to elucidate the causal associations are needed, encouraging participation in community groups through social networks might be effective for participation in sports groups.

Project description:ObjectiveTube feeders are prone to membranous substance formation on the palate, and those with membranous substances have a risk of fever, with the probable involvement of their oral bacteria. However, the palatal microbiota of those with membranous substances has not been elucidated. Therefore, we evaluated the differences in palatal microbiota between tube-fed individuals with and without membranous substances to clarify the microbiota.Materials and methodsThis study included 19 participants aged 65 years who required tube feeding. The participants' characteristics were collected from nursing records and oral examinations. If membranous materials were found on the palate, a specimen was collected. Membranous substances were defined as keratotic degeneration observed under a microscope. Additionally, we performed a comprehensive microbiome analysis by extracting DNA from the samples and performing 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Finally, we compared the participant demographics and oral microbiota between patients with and without membranous substances.ResultsA total of 11 participants had membranous substances associated with "mouth dryness" (p < 0.001) and "constant mouth opening" (p = 0.020). Palatal microbiota differed between those with and without membranous substances. Among the bacteria with a relative abundance greater than 1.0%, the abundance of Streptococcus (p = 0.007), Fusobacterium (p = 0.041), Streptococcus agalactiae (p = 0.009), and Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. vincentii (p = 0.026) was significantly higher in the membranous substance group than in the non-membranous substance group.ConclusionsThe palatal microbiota of individuals undergoing tube feeding differed depending on the presence or absence of membranous substances. Membrane substance formation associated with dry mouth purportedly alters the palatal microbiota. Streptococcus, Fusobacterium, S. agalactiae, and F. nucleatum subsp. vincentii were more abundant in the oral microbiota of patients with membranous substances. Thus, preventing this formation may help in controlling the growth of these microbes.
