Graphite Size Effect on Chemical Expansion and Graphene Oxide Properties.

ABSTRACT: Does larger graphite flake size always lead to larger and better graphene oxide (GO)? Is there an optimum size to balance between the large building blocks needed and the defects generated during oxidation? In this study, the effect of using four different graphite flake sources on the size, structure, and properties of GO and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was investigated. GO was mainly prepared by the enhanced synthesis method except for the smallest graphite size, which could not be expanded before oxidation. The effect of the flakes' lateral size and thickness on the expansion volume was also studied. Several characterization techniques were performed throughout this work, and their results provide evidence of how the graphite size changes not only the expansion volume of the chemically expanded graphite (CEG) as well as the final properties of GO or rGO but also the presence of organosulfate impurities, defects, wide size distribution, and the harsh oxidation reaction itself.

Effect of graphite and graphene oxide on thorium carbide microstructural and thermal properties.

Project description:Thorium carbide to be tested as target material for the production of 225Ac with the ISOL method, was produced via carbothermal reduction of ThO2 nanoparticles by graphite and graphene oxide, respectively. The use of graphene oxide (GO) as carbon source resulted in a reduced reactivity compared to graphite, confirmed by the presence of unreacted ThO2 mainly in the core of the samples. The reacted ThO2 or ThC2-GO showed a faster reactivity in air, mainly observed as ThC2 amorphization. The specific surface area of the ThC2-GO samples was almost doubled compared to ThC2-graphite samples. The effect of these microstructural features was analysed in terms of thermal diffusivity and calculated thermal conductivity that were both reduced in ThC2-GO samples, however the difference with ThC2-graphite samples decreased at increasing temperature. The present study shows that the use of unreduced GO inhibits the solid-state reaction between ThO2 and C; on the other hand, the high reactivity of the ThC2 so produced is expected to be beneficial for the 225Ac production with the ISOL method, affording a high release efficiency. It is expected that the use of reduced GO could represent a good solution for highly efficient ThC2 targets.

Dependence of Precursor Graphite Flake Size on Nitrogen Doping in Graphene Oxide and Its Effect on OER Catalytic Activity.

Project description:We report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene oxide, with 5.7-7.0 wt % nitrogen doping, from different sizes of precursor graphite and study its effect on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of IrO2 in an acidic medium. The nitrogen-doped supports are expected to have pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic functionalities at different ratios responsible for their improved performance. The N-doped supports and catalysts are synthesized via pyrolysis and the hydrothermal method using natural and synthetic graphite of three different flake sizes and evaluated for their structural and electrochemical characteristics. The average size of IrO2 nanoparticles deposited on the N-doped supports is independent of the flake size and doping amount of nitrogen. The catalysts show optimum current densities but improved stability with increasing flake sizes of 7, 20, and 125 μm. Our results demonstrate that the selection of the flake size of the doped support is necessary to achieve durable catalysts for the OER in an acidic medium.

Building with graphene oxide: effect of graphite nature and oxidation methods on the graphene assembly.

Project description:During nearly 2 centuries of history in graphene researches, numerous researches were reported to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) and build a proper graphene assembly. However, tons of research prevail without verifying the reproducibility of GO that can be sensitively attributed by the graphite nature, and chemical processes. Here, the structure and chemistry of GO products were analyzed by considering parent graphite sources, and three different oxidation methods based on Hummer's method and the addition of H3PO4. The oxidation level of GO was characterized by monitoring the C/O and sp2 carbon ratio from X-ray photoelectroscopy (XPS) spectra. It was observed that the oxidant intercalation behavior was dependent on the morphological differences of graphite; synthetic and natural flake graphite were compared based on their origins in shape and size from different suppliers. Thermal reduction and exfoliation were applied to GO powders to prepare thermally expanded graphene oxide (TEGO) as a graphene assembly. Gas releases from the reduction of oxygen functional groups split layered GO structure and build a porous structure that varied specific surface area regarding oxidation degrees of GO.

Sulfuric acid intercalated graphite oxide for graphene preparation.

Project description:Graphene has shown enormous potential for innovation in various research fields. The current chemical approaches based on exfoliation of graphite via graphite oxide (GO) are potential for large-scale synthesis of graphene but suffer from high cost, great operation difficulties, and serious waste discharge. We report a facile preparation of graphene by rapid reduction and expansion exfoliation of sulfuric acid intercalated graphite oxide (SIGO) at temperature just above 100°C in ambient atmosphere, noting that SIGO is easily available as the immediate oxidation descendent of graphite in sulfuric acid. The oxygenic and hydric groups in SIGO are mainly removed through dehydration as catalyzed by the intercalated sulfuric acid (ISA). The resultant consists of mostly single layer graphene sheets with a mean diameter of 1.07 μm after dispersion in DMF. This SIGO process is reductant free, easy operation, low-energy, environmental friendly and generates graphene with low oxygen content, less defect and high conductivity. The provided synthesis route from graphite to graphene via SIGO is compact and readily scalable.

Scalable Chitosan-Graphene Oxide Membranes: The Effect of GO Size on Properties and Cross-Flow Filtration Performance.

Project description:Chitosan (CS)-graphene oxide (GO) composite films were fabricated, characterized, and evaluated as pressure-driven water filtration membranes. GO particles were incorporated into a chitosan polymer solution to form a suspension that was cast as a membrane via evaporative phase inversion allowing for scale-up for cross-flow testing conditions. Morphology and composition results for nano and granular GO in the CS matrix indicate that the particle size of GO impacts the internal membrane morphology as well as the structural order and the chemical composition. Performance of the membranes was evaluated with cationic and anionic organic probe molecules and revealed charge-dependent mechanisms of dye removal. The CSGO membranes had rejections of at least 95% for cationic methylene blue with mass balances obtained from measurements of the feed, concentrate, and permeate. This result suggests the dominant mechanism of removal is physical rejection for both GO particle sizes. For anionic methyl orange, the results indicate sorption as the dominant mechanism of removal, and performance is dependent on both GO particle size and time, with micrometer-scale GO removing 68-99% and nanometer-scale GO showing modest removal of 29-64%. The pure water flux for CSGO composite membranes ranged from 2-4.5 L/m2 h at a transmembrane pressure of 344 kPa (3.44 bar), with pure water permeance ranging from 5.8 × 10-3 to 0.01 L/m2 h kPa (0.58-1.3 L/m2 h bar). Based on the 41 μm membrane thickness obtained from microscopy, the hydraulic permeability ranged from 0.24-0.54 L μm/m2 h kPa (24.4-54.1 L μm/m2 h bar).

Graphene oxide and H2 production from bioelectrochemical graphite oxidation.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) is an emerging material for energy and environmental applications, but it has been primarily produced using chemical processes involving high energy consumption and hazardous chemicals. In this study, we reported a new bioelectrochemical method to produce GO from graphite under ambient conditions without chemical amendments, value-added organic compounds and high rate H2 were also produced. Compared with abiotic electrochemical electrolysis control, the microbial assisted graphite oxidation produced high rate of graphite oxide and graphene oxide (BEGO) sheets, CO2, and current at lower applied voltage. The resultant electrons are transferred to a biocathode, where H2 and organic compounds are produced by microbial reduction of protons and CO2, respectively, a process known as microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Pseudomonas is the dominant population on the anode, while abundant anaerobic solvent-producing bacteria Clostridium carboxidivorans is likely responsible for electrosynthesis on the cathode. Oxygen production through water electrolysis was not detected on the anode due to the presence of facultative and aerobic bacteria as O2 sinkers. This new method provides a sustainable route for producing graphene materials and renewable H2 at low cost, and it may stimulate a new area of research in MES.

The Influence of Lateral Size and Oxidation of Graphene Oxide on Its Chemical Reduction and Electrical Conductivity of Reduced Graphene Oxide.

Project description:The chemical reduction efficiencies of graphene oxide (GO) are critically important in achieving graphene-like properties in reduced graphene oxide (rGO). In this study, we assessed GO lateral size and its degree of oxidation effect on its chemical reduction efficiency in both suspension and film and the electrical conductivity of the corresponding rGO films. We show that while GO-reduction efficiency increases with the GO size of lower oxidation in suspension, the trend is opposite for film. FESEM, XRD, and Raman analyses reveal that the GO reduction efficiency in film is affected not only by GO size and degree of oxidation but also by its interlayer spacing (restacking) and the efficiency is tunable based on the use of mixed GO. Moreover, we show that the electrical conductivity of rGO films depends linearly on the C/O and Raman ID/IG ratio of rGO and not the lateral size of GO. In this study, an optimal chemical reduction was achieved using premixed large and small GO (L/SGO) at a ratio of 3:1 (w/w). Consequently, the highest electrical conductivity of 85,283 S/m was achieved out of all rGO films reported so far. We hope that our findings may help to pave the way for a simple and scalable method to fabricate tunable, electrically conductive rGO films for electronic applications.

Analysis of oxidation degree of graphite oxide and chemical structure of corresponding reduced graphite oxide by selecting different-sized original graphite.

Project description:The thermal exfoliation and reduction of graphite oxide (GO) is the most commonly used strategy for large-scale preparation of graphene, and the oxidation degree of GO would influence the chemical structure of prepared graphene, thereby affecting its final physical and chemical properties. In addition to serving as the precursor for synthesizing graphene, GO also possesses great potential for various important applications owing to its abundant oxygen-containing groups and hybrid electronic structure. Therefore, systematically studying the influencing factors on the oxidation degree of GO and clarifying the effect of oxidation degree on the corresponding graphene is particularly important. Herein, we have studied the effect of the lateral size of the original graphite on the oxidation degree of GO in order to control the oxidation degree of GO. GOs with different degrees of oxidation were synthesized using a modified Hummers method. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy revealed that decreased lateral size of the original graphite would lead to increased oxidation degree of GO. Furthermore, the interlayer spacing of the GO samples achieved 0.9-1.0 nm, which indicated that the modified Hummers method could make well oxidized graphite. The corresponding reduced graphite oxide (rGO) was also prepared by low-temperature exfoliation of GO at 140 °C under ambient atmosphere. It was found that a larger lateral size of GO resulted in rGO with fewer oxygen-containing functional groups, but a smaller lateral size of graphite possessed a higher exfoliation degree with a larger specific surface area. More importantly, the relationship between binding energy (E B) of photoelectron of C atom in oxygen-containing groups and the number of oxygen-containing groups in GO and rGO samples was analyzed theoretically.

Structural Properties of Graphene Oxide Prepared from Graphite by Three Different Methods and the Effect on Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solution.

Project description:Herein, three types of graphene oxides (GOs, GO-M1, GO-M2 and GO-M3) have been successfully prepared from graphite by three different methods and utilized for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Further, the effects of initial concentration and pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature on the adsorption performance of GOs were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms for Cr(VI) adsorption by GOs are mainly the redox reaction and electrostatic attraction, while there are also pore filling, ion exchange and complexation involved in these adsorption processes. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm data indicate that these adsorption processes of GOs on Cr(VI) are dominantly monolayer chemisorption and equilibrium can be reached in 30 min. The saturation adsorption capacities (Qm, 298.15 K) of GO-M1, GO-M2 and GO-M3 for Cr(VI) are estimated to be 3.5412 mg⋅g-1, 2.3631 mg⋅g-1 and 7.0358 mg⋅g-1, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption thermodynamic study showed that these adsorption processes of Cr(VI) by the three types of GOs at 298.15 K to 323.15 K are endothermic, entropy-driven and thermodynamically spontaneous and feasible. Overall, these findings provided vital insights into the mechanism and application of Cr(VI) removal by GOs.
