Laser-Induced Forward Transferred Optical Scattering Nanosilica for Transparent Displays.

ABSTRACT: Laser printing has become a promising alternative for large-scale fabrication of functional devices. Here, laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) of nanosilica was successfully achieved using a lower-cost nanosecond laser with a center wavelength of 1064 nm. To enhance the light absorption of silica, a small amount of graphene oxide (GO) was added to the fumed silica. Investigations were conducted to give an insight into the role of GO in the LIFT process. Pattern deposition was achieved with a minimum line width of 221 μm. The scattering can be tuned from ~2.5% to ~17.5% by changing the laser fluence. The patternable transparent display based on laser transferred nanosilica (LTNS) film was also demonstrated, showing its capability to deliver information on multiple levels. This LIFT based technique promotes fast, flexible, and low-cost manufacturing of scattering-based translucent screens or patterns for transparent displays.

Project description:Quantitative blood flow measurements using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have a wide potential range of medical research and clinical applications. Flowmetry based on the temporal dynamics of the OCT signal may have the ability to measure three-dimensional flow profiles regardless of the flow direction. State-of-the-art models describing the OCT signal temporal statistics are based on dynamic light scattering (DLS), a model which is inherently limited to single scattering regimes. DLS methods continue to be applied to OCT despite the knowledge that red blood cells produce strong forward multiple scattering. Here, we postulate that forward multiple scattering is the primary mechanism causing the rate of speckle-decorrelation derived from data acquired in vivo to deviate from the rate of decorrelation determined in phantom experiments. We also postulate that multiple scattering contributions to decorrelation are only present when the sample exhibits velocity field inhomogeneities larger than the scale of a resolution volume and are thus absent in rigid bulk motion. To test these hypotheses, we performed a systematic study of the effects of forward multiple scattering on OCT signal decorrelation with phantom experiments under physiologically relevant flow conditions and relative bulk motion. Our experimental results confirm that the amount of forward multiple scattering affects the proportionality between lateral flow and decorrelation. We propose that multiply scattered light carries information from different locations in the sample and each location imprints scattering dynamics on the scattered light causing increased decorrelation rates. Our analysis confirms that the detection of forward scattered light inside the vessel lumen causes an increase in the rate of decorrelation which results in an overestimation of blood flow velocities at depths as shallow as 40 µm into whole blood for OCT systems with typical numerical apertures used in retinal imaging.

Project description:In the last decades, digital manufacturing has constituted the headline of what is starting to be known as the 'fourth industrial revolution', where the fabrication processes comprise a hybrid of technologies that blur the lines between fundamental sciences, engineering, and even medicine as never seen before. One of the reasons why this mixture is inevitable has to do with the fact that we live in an era that incorporates technology in every single aspect of our daily lives. In the industry, this has translated into fabrication versatility, as follows: design changes on a final product are just one click away, fabrication chains have evolved towards continuous roll-to roll processes, and, most importantly, the overall costs and fabrication speeds are matching and overcoming most of the traditional fabrication methods. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) stands out as a versatile set of fabrication techniques, being the closest approach to an all-in-one additive manufacturing method compatible with virtually any material. In this technique, laser radiation is used to propel the material of interest and deposit it at user-defined locations with high spatial resolution. By selecting the proper laser parameters and considering the interaction of the laser light with the material, it is possible to transfer this technique from robust inorganic materials to fragile biological samples. In this work, we first present a brief introduction on the current developments of the LIFT technique by surveying recent scientific review publications. Then, we provide a general research overview by making an account of the publication and citation numbers of scientific papers on the LIFT technique considering the last three decades. At the same time, we highlight the geographical distribution and main research institutions that contribute to this scientific output. Finally, we present the patent status and commercial forecasts to outline future trends for LIFT in different scientific fields.
