How Has the Covid-19 Pandemic Influenced Nursing Students' Academic Experience and Career Choices? A Qualitative Descriptive Analysis.

ABSTRACT: COVID-19 control measures influenced education and training environments and profoundly impacted nursing students' career prospects and academic lives. This study intends to elucidate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing students' academic experience and career choices. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at a four-year university in Japan, using semi-structured interviews with 14 nursing students. Sandelowski's qualitative descriptive analysis was conducted. We identified 11 categories that summarize COVID-19's influence on students' academic experience and career choices: "Forced change to a new learning system," "Difficult learning thoroughly with restricted face-to-face interactions," "Worries regarding teacher evaluations when face-to-face interactions are restricted," "Adapting to changes in the learning environment," "Finding new ways to learn due to the different learning environment," "Worries regarding career decision-making after losing opportunities to obtain career information", "Fully utilizing limited information resources in deciding where to work while being influenced by others," "Coping with a confusing new job hunting system," "Worries about becoming a nurse without enough practical experience," "Conscious of working as a nurse while facing infections," and "Support from those around me is helpful in an unfamiliar environment." The categories comprised four elements: academic impact, employment/career impact, future impact on working as a nurse, and environmental support. Building an online education/training program, ensuring the availability of regular psychological support, providing abundant information on employment, installing an information desk, and providing regular feedback were considered imperative for supporting nursing students.

Project description:BackgroundThe pharmacy profession offers diverse career paths. Yet, pharmacy students may not be familiar with these various paths and may struggle to choose one that is best suited to their interests, goals, and values. Limited literature has reported on pharmacy students' career interests. However, no studies have evaluated pharmacy graduates' eventual career paths as compared to their initial choices when they were students. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to compare pharmacy students' initial career choices to their subsequent career paths.MethodsThis was a descriptive cross-sectional study that analyzed data on pharmacy students' initial career choices when they were enrolled in a career opportunities course and their subsequent career paths following graduation. Data on the initial career choices of students were retrospectively collected from the records of a career opportunities elective course between the academic years 2012 and 2019. Based on previous employment surveys, data on the subsequent graduates' career paths and graduate and postgraduate education were retrieved from the school records. Subsequent graduates' career paths were then compared to their individual students' initial career choices. The paths of graduates with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) versus Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BS Pharm) only holders were analyzed.ResultsThe overall subsequent career paths of graduates matched the initial students' career choices in 30.8% of cases. While the top initial students' career choices were community pharmacy (36.1%), clinical pharmacy (31.4%), and pharmaceutical industry (12.9%), the top subsequent graduates' career paths were however the pharmaceutical industry (30.7%), community pharmacy (17.9%), and clinical pharmacy (7.9%). Work in the pharmaceutical industry and community pharmacy and the pursuit of masters and/or PhD were mostly followed by BS Pharm graduates, whereas PharmD holders predominantly pursued clinical pharmacy.ConclusionsPharmacy graduates' career paths infrequently matched their initial career choices as students. Pharmacy curricula should prepare students for diverse career paths.

Project description:BackgroundPredicted nursing deficits and low nursing student retention rates highlighted the need to investigate cultivation of grit, a malleable trait involving perseverance and passion to achieve long-term goals amidst challenges and difficulties.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to identify how cultivation of grit and additional academic and non-academic strategies aided gritty second-year associate degree-seeking nursing students in addressing nursing program challenges and completing their nursing program.MethodsTwenty-two second-year associate degree-seeking nursing students in rural central Arizona completed demographic and Grit-O Scale questions using Survey Monkey™ and participated in semi-structured interviews or focus group discussions held from September through December 2022. Research questions provided study foundation: RQ1: How do second-year nursing students with high levels of self-perceived grit of greater than 3.5 out of 5 as measured on the Grit-O Scale describe how grit was cultivated during their associate degree-seeking nursing program? RQ2: How do second-year nursing students with high levels of self-perceived grit describe how additional academic and non-academic strategies added to them in dealing with the challenges of their associate degree-seeking nursing program?DesignQualitative Descriptive Research.ResultsInductive thematic analysis revealed six themes: importance of perseverance and passion, facets of grit; identification of program challenges and strategies used to deal with challenges; and the significance of support from nursing cohort, family, and friends, and nursing instructors.ConclusionsEffective strategies for participating nursing student retention and program completion involved cultivation of grit and its facets of perseverance and passion and additional academic and non-academic strategies of nursing cohort and instructor support aided students in dealing with challenges faced during their associate degree-seeking nursing program at a rural, central Arizonan community college.

Project description:BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic mandated the reconstruction of educational programs globally. For nursing students in need of practical learning and training as a part of their curriculum, the pandemic also caused restrictions and alterations in practical placements and limited access to simulation training at campuses. The aim of this study is therefore, to describe and explore how the COVID- 19 pandemic influenced baccalaureate nursing students' experiences of learning and their social life as a student.MethodWe used a mixed method study design including quantitative data from one of the universities (University of Agder) from a national Norwegian survey of baccalaureate nursing students and qualitative data from focus-group interviews from the same university. The quantitative survey included 396 baccalaureate nursing students (response rate, 46%). We arranged five focus groups with a total of 23 students (15 females and 8 males). The students took part in one of the focus-group interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using chi-square test for categorical data and ANOVA tests for continuous data, while the qualitative data were analyzed using Systematic Text Condensation and an editing analysis style.ResultsMost students (70%) were concerned about the quality of the education program. In clinical placement, 83% of students had cared for patients with confirmed COVID-19 or unclear COVID-19 status. The qualitative data revealed three main themes: missing the social dimension of learning; worries and challenges in clinical placement; and experiencing normal instructive days in clinical placement. The general picture emerging from our analysis is the importance of social interactions for learning.ConclusionAs the COVID-19 pandemic continues, our findings of students' worries about the quality of the education program and not reaching learning outcomes must be taken into consideration. Social interaction is considered crucial and fundamental for student learning. A follow-up study following baccalaureate completion is necessary to explore the consequences over time of disrupted education.
