Rolled Dielectric Elastomer Antagonistic Actuators for Biomimetic Underwater Robots.

ABSTRACT: In this study, an antagonistic actuator using dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) is developed to investigate the use of rolled DEAs in underwater robots. The actuator consists of a backbone, an elastic hinge, and two rolled DEAs placed in an antagonistic fashion, allowing for the generation of bidirectional movements of the actuator tip. To prove this concept, an analytical model of the actuator is built. The experimental samples are fabricated based on the specification determined by the model. In the fabricated actuator, each rolled DEA has a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 21 mm. The whole device weighs 1.7 g. In the tested voltage range of 0-1200 V, the actuator exhibits a voltage-controllable angle and torque of up to 2.2° and 11.3 mN∙mm, respectively. The actuator is then implemented into a swimming robot, which shows forward speed of 0.9 mm/s at the applied voltage of 1000 V and the driving frequency of 10 Hz. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using rolled DEAs in underwater robots.

Muscle-inspired soft robots based on bilateral dielectric elastomer actuators.

Project description:Muscle groups perform their functions in the human body via bilateral muscle actuation, which brings bionic inspiration to artificial robot design. Building soft robotic systems with artificial muscles and multiple control dimensions could be an effective means to develop highly controllable soft robots. Here, we report a bilateral actuator with a bilateral deformation function similar to that of a muscle group that can be used for soft robots. To construct this bilateral actuator, a low-cost VHB 4910 dielectric elastomer was selected as the artificial muscle, and polymer films manufactured with specific shapes served as the actuator frame. By end-to-end connecting these bilateral actuators, a gear-shaped 3D soft robot with diverse motion capabilities could be developed, benefiting from adjustable actuation combinations. Lying on the ground with all feet on the ground, a crawling soft robot with dexterous movement along multiple directions was realized. Moreover, the directional steering was instantaneous and efficient. With two feet standing on the ground, it also acted as a rolling soft robot that can achieve bidirectional rolling motion and climbing motion on a 2° slope. Finally, inspired by the orbicularis oris muscle in the mouth, a mouthlike soft robot that could bite and grab objects 5.3 times of its body weight was demonstrated. The bidirectional function of a single actuator and the various combination modes among multiple actuators together allow the soft robots to exhibit diverse functionalities and flexibility, which provides a very valuable reference for the design of highly controllable soft robots.

Soft Biomimetic Fish Robot Made of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators.

Project description:This article presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a soft biomimetic robotic fish based on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) that swims by body and/or caudal fin (BCF) propulsion. BCF is a promising locomotion mechanism that potentially offers swimming at higher speeds and acceleration rates, and efficient locomotion. The robot consists of laminated silicone layers wherein two DEAs are used in an antagonistic configuration, generating undulating fish-like motion. The design of the robot is guided by a mathematical model based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and takes account of the nonuniform geometry of the robot and of the hydrodynamic effect of water. The modeling results were compared with the experimental results obtained from the fish robot with a total length of 150 mm, a thickness of 0.75 mm, and weight of 4.4 g. We observed that the frequency peaks in the measured thrust force produced by the robot are similar to the natural frequencies computed by the model. The peak swimming speed of the robot was 37.2 mm/s (0.25 body length/s) at 0.75 Hz. We also observed that the modal shape of the robot at this frequency corresponds to the first natural mode. The swimming of the robot resembles real fish and displays a Strouhal number very close to those of living fish. These results suggest the high potential of DEA-based underwater robots relying on BCF propulsion, and applicability of our design and fabrication methods.

Dielectric Elastomer Fiber Actuators with Aqueous Electrode.

Project description:Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are one of the promising actuation technologies for soft robotics. This study proposes a fiber-shaped DEA, namely dielectric elastomer fiber actuators (DEFAs). The actuator consisted of a silicone tube filled with the aqueous electrode (sodium chloride solution). Furthermore, it could generate linear and bending actuation in a water environment, which acts as the ground side electrode. Linear-type DEFA and bending-type DEFA were fabricated and characterized to prove the concept. A mixture of Ecoflex 00-30 (Smooth-On) and Sylgard 184 (Dow Corning) was employed in these actuators for the tube part, which was 75.0-mm long with outer and inner diameters of 6.0 mm and 5.0 mm, respectively. An analytical model was constructed to design and predict the behavior of the devices. In the experiments, the linear-type DEFA exhibited an actuation strain and force of 1.3% and 42.4 mN, respectively, at 10 kV (~20 V/µm) with a response time of 0.2 s. The bending-type DEFA exhibited an actuation angle of 8.1° at 10 kV (~20 V/µm). Subsequently, a jellyfish-type robot was developed and tested, which showed the swimming speed of 3.1 mm/s at 10 kV and the driving frequency of 4 Hz. The results obtained in this study show the successful implementation of the actuator concept and demonstrate its applicability for soft robotics.

Monolithic shape-programmable dielectric liquid crystal elastomer actuators.

Project description:Soft robotics may enable many new technologies in which humans and robots physically interact, yet the necessary high-performance soft actuators still do not exist. The optimal soft actuators need to be fast and forceful and have programmable shape changes. Furthermore, they should be energy efficient for untethered applications and easy to fabricate. Here, we combine desirable characteristics from two distinct active material systems: fast and highly efficient actuation from dielectric elastomers and directed shape programmability from liquid crystal elastomers. Via a top-down photoalignment method, we program molecular alignment and localized giant elastic anisotropy into the liquid crystal elastomers. The linearly actuated liquid crystal elastomer monoliths achieve strain rates over 120% per second with an energy conversion efficiency of 20% while moving loads over 700 times the elastomer weight. The electric actuation mechanism offers unprecedented opportunities toward miniaturization with shape programmability, efficiency, and more degrees of freedom for applications in soft robotics and beyond.

Photothermal modulated dielectric elastomer actuator for resilient soft robots.

Project description:Soft robots need to be resilient to extend their operation under unpredictable environments. While utilizing elastomers that are tough and healable is promising to achieve this, mechanical enhancements often lead to higher stiffness that deteriorates actuation strains. This work introduces liquid metal nanoparticles into carboxyl polyurethane elastomer to sensitize a dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) with responsiveness to electric fields and NIR light. The nanocomposite can be healed under NIR illumination to retain high toughness (55 MJ m-3) and can be recycled at lower temperatures and shorter durations due to nanoparticle-elastomer interactions that minimize energy barriers. During co-stimulation, photothermal effects modulate the elastomer moduli to lower driving electric fields of DEAs. Bilayer configurations display synergistic actuation under co-stimulation to improve energy densities, and enable a DEA crawler to achieve longer strides. This work paves the way for a generation of soft robots that achieves both resilience and high actuation performance.

Additively manufactured unimorph dielectric elastomer actuators: Design, materials, and fabrication.

Project description:Dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) is a smart material that holds promise for soft robotics due to the material's intrinsic softness, high energy density, fast response, and reversible electromechanical characteristics. Like for most soft robotics materials, additive manufacturing (AM) can significantly benefit DEAs and is mainly applied to the unimorph DEA (UDEA) configuration. While major aspects of UDEA modeling are known, 3D printed UDEAs are subject to specific material and geometrical limitations due to the AM process and require a more thorough analysis of their design and performance. Furthermore, a figure of merit (FOM) is an analytical tool that is frequently used for planar DEA design optimization and material selection but is not yet derived for UDEA. Thus, the objective of the paper is modeling of 3D printed UDEAs, analyzing the effects of their design features on the actuation performance, and deriving FOMs for UDEAs. As a result, the derived analytical model demonstrates dependence of actuation performance on various design parameters typical for 3D printed DEAs, provides a new optimum thickness to Young's modulus ratio of UDEA layers when designing a 3D printed DEA with fixed dielectric elastomer layer thickness, and serves as a base for UDEAs' FOMs. The FOMs have various degrees of complexity depending on considered UDEA design features. The model was numerically verified and experimentally validated through the actuation of a 3D printed UDEA. The fabricated and tested UDEA design was optimized geometrically by controlling the thickness of each layer and from the material perspective by mixing commercially available silicones in non-standard ratios for the passive and dielectric layers. Finally, the prepared non-standard mix ratios of the silicones were characterized for their viscosity dynamics during curing at various conditions to investigate the silicones' manufacturability through AM.

High-Voltage Power Supply for Four-Quadrant Dielectric Elastomer Actuators.

Project description:Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are emerging as promising candidates for various applications in robotics and optical devices due to their lightweight, miniaturization potential, high energy density, simple structure, and low power consumption. However, their effective actuation always demands sophisticated high-voltage driving circuits that are compact and responsive. DEAs need to be capable of generating intricate high-voltage waveforms or simultaneously controlling multiple quadrants with distinct high-voltage levels. This paper proposes a high-voltage power supply for DEAs, featuring a four-quadrant high-voltage driving circuit. The circuit is capable of independently generating high-voltage signals ranging from 100 V to 6000 V and producing arbitrary waveforms with adjustable frequencies. The independent operation of the quadrants without crosstalk showcases the system's integration and potential for cross-disciplinary applications.

Ions-Silica Percolated Ionic Dielectric Elastomer Actuator for Soft Robots.

Project description:Soft robotics systems are currently under development using ionic electroactive polymers (i-EAP) as soft actuators for the human-machine interface. However, this endeavor has been impeded by the dilemma of reconciling the competing demands of force and strain in i-EAP actuators. Here, the authors present a novel design called "ions-silica percolated ionic dielectric elastomer (i-SPIDER)", which exhibits ionic liquid-confined silica microstructures that effectively resolve the chronic issue of conventional i-EAP actuators. The i-SPIDER actuator demonstrates remarkable electromechanical conversion capacity at low voltage, thanks to improved ion accumulation facilitated by interpreting electrode polarization at the electrolyte-electrode interface. This approach concurrently enhances both strain (by approximately 1.52%) and force (by roughly 1.06 mN) even at low Young's modulus (merely 5.9 MPa). Additionally, by demonstrating arachnid-inspired soft robots endowed with user-desired tasks through control of various form factors, the development of soft robots using the i-SPIDER that can concomitantly enhance strain and force holds promise as a compelling avenue for ushering in the next generation of miniaturized, low-powered soft robotics.

A Deformable Motor Driven by Dielectric Elastomer Actuators and Flexible Mechanisms.

Project description:Soft robots with dynamic motion could be used in a variety of applications involving the handling of fragile materials. Rotational motors are often used as actuators to provide functions for robots (e.g., vibration, locomotion, and suction). To broaden the applications of soft robots, it will be necessary to develop a rotational motor that does not prevent robots from undergoing deformation. In this study, we developed a deformable motor based on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) that is lightweight, consumes little energy, and does not generate a magnetic field. We tested the new motor in two experiments. First, we showed that internal stress changes in the DEAs were transmitted to the mechanism that rotates the motor. Second, we demonstrated that the deformable motor rotated even when it was deformed by an external force. In particular, the rotational performance did not decrease when an external force was applied to deform the motor into an elliptical shape. Our motor opens the door to applications of rotational motion to soft robots.

Dielectric elastomer actuators based on stretchable and self-healable hydrogel electrodes.

Project description:Dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) based on dielectric elastomer holds promising applications in soft robotics. Compliant electrodes with large stretchability and high electrical conductivity are the vital components for the DEAs. In this study, a type of DEA was developed using carbon nanotube/polyvinyl alcohol (CNT/PVA) hydrogel electrodes. The CNT/PVA hydrogel electrodes demonstrate a stretchability up to 200% with a small relative resistance change of approximately 1.2, and a self-healing capability. The areal strain of the DEA based on the CNT/PVA hydrogel electrodes is more than 40%, much higher than the ones based on pure PVA electrodes.
