The Effect of Rare Earths on the Response of Photo UV-Activate ZnO Gas Sensors.

ABSTRACT: In this work, ZnO nanoparticle resistive sensors decorated with rare earths (REs; including Er, Tb, Eu and Dy) were used at room temperature to detect atmospheric pollutant gases (NO₂, CO and CH₄). Sensitive films were prepared by drop casting from aqueous solutions of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and trivalent RE ions. The sensors were continuously illuminated by ultraviolet light during the detection processes. The effect of photoactivation of the sensitive films was studied, as well as the influence of humidity on the response of the sensors to polluting gases. Comparative studies on the detection properties of the sensors showed how the presence of REs increased the response to the gases detected. Low concentrations of pollutant gases (50 ppb NO₂, 1 ppm CO and 3 ppm CH₄) were detected at room temperature. The detection mechanisms were then discussed in terms of the possible oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction in both dry and humid air atmospheres.

Annealing effect on UV-illuminated recovery in gas response of graphene-based NO2 sensors.

Project description:The response and recovery of a graphene-based sensor for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing is improved by a combination of two treatments including rapid thermal annealing (RTA) of graphene and UV illumination during the pump down period. A two-dimensional monolayer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition was transferred to an arc-shape electrode and subsequently heated at temperatures from 200 to 400 °C for 1 min in N2 atmosphere by RTA to eliminate the chemical residues on the graphene generated in the transfer process. The effect of RTA and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) residues was investigated using Raman spectroscopy. The shift of the G and 2D bands could be due to graphene suffering from compressive strain and hole doping from the substrate enhanced by the RTA treatment. The hole doping effect was also observed from Hall measurements. Atomic force microscopy images confirm the PMMA residues and surface roughness reduction by the RTA treatment. Annealing at 300 °C enhances the NO2 sensing response at 1 ppm by 4 times compared to the pristine graphene without RTA. Full recovery of the sensor to the initial baseline could be achieved by the adjustment of UV illumination time.

Role of the Exposed Polar Facets in the Performance of Thermally and UV Activated ZnO Nanostructured Gas Sensors.

Project description:ZnO nanostructures with different morphologies (nanowires, nanodisks, and nanostars) were synthesized hydrothermally. Gas sensing properties of the as-grown nanostructures were investigated under thermal and UV activation. The performance of the ZnO nanodisk gas sensor was found to be superior to that of other nanostructures (S g ∼ 3700% to 300 ppm ethanol and response time and recovery time of 8 and 13 s). The enhancement in sensitivity is attributed to the surface polarities of the different structures on the nanoscale. Furthermore, the selectivity of the gas sensors can be achieved by controlling the UV intensity used to activate these sensors. The highest sensitivity value for ethanol, isopropanol, acetone, and toluene are recorded at the optimal UV intensity of 1.6, 2.4, 3.2, and 4 mW/cm(2), respectively. Finally, the UV activation mechanism for metal oxide gas sensors is compared with the thermal activation process. The UV activation of analytes based on solution processed ZnO structures pave the way for better quality gas sensors.

High Sensitivity of NO Gas Sensors Based on Novel Ag-Doped ZnO Nanoflowers Enhanced with a UV Light-Emitting Diode.

Project description:An ultraviolet-enhanced (UV-enhanced) nitric oxide (NO) sensor based on silver-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoflowers is developed using a low-cost hydrothermal method. The results indicate that silver (Ag) ions were doped into the ZnO nanostructure successfully, thus changing the morphology. In the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, we also found that some Ag ions were separated out onto the surface of the ZnO nanoflowers and that the Ag-doped and Ag nanoparticles improved the sensing property. The NO sensing property increased from 73.91 to 89.04% through the use of a UV light-emitting diode (UV-LED). The response time was approximately 120 s without the UV-LED, and the UV-enhanced Ag-doped ZnO nanoflower sensor exhibited a reduced response time (60 s). The best working temperature could be reduced from 200 to 150 °C using UV light illumination, and it was found that the NO response increased by 15.13% at 150 °C. The UV photoresponse of the Ag-doped ZnO nanoflowers and the mechanisms by which the improvement of NO sensing property occurred through the use of UV light illumination are discussed. The property of the gas sensor can be calibrated using a self-photoelectric effect under UV light illumination. These interesting UV-enhanced Ag-doped ZnO nanoflowers are viable candidates for practical applications.

Multifunctional UV and Gas Sensors Based on Vertically Nanostructured Zinc Oxide: Volume Versus Surface Effect.

Project description:This article reports that it is possible to make multifunctional sensing devices with ZnO infiltrated polymers while the sensing interactions could occur throughout the polymer. As such, we find that infiltrated devices with SU-8 polymer can result in highly sensitive UV sensors. Mesh dielectric core devices were found to make sensitive gas sensors with a better than 5 ppm sensitivity for formaldehyde and NO2. A new type of p-n junction device is further demonstrated that is sensitive to UV illumination, thus making it an enhanced UV sensor. Sensing devices relying on volume interactions, such as light absorption, can significantly benefit from the infiltrated polymer. In contrast, devices that rely on surface interactions, such as gas sensors, do not gain performance in any significant way with or without the infiltrated polymer.

High-temperature resistive gas sensors based on ZnO/SiC nanocomposites.

Project description:Increasing requirements for environmental protection have led to the need for the development of control systems for exhaust gases monitored directly at high temperatures in the range of 300-800 °C. The development of high-temperature gas sensors requires the creation of new materials that are stable under these conditions. The stability of nanostructured semiconductor oxides at high temperature can be enhanced by creating composites with highly dispersed silicon carbide (SiC). In this work, ZnO and SiC nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning of polymer solutions followed by heat treatment, which is necessary for polymer removal and crystallization of semiconductor materials. ZnO/SiC nanocomposites (15-45 mol % SiC) were obtained by mixing the components in a single homogeneous paste with subsequent thermal annealing. The composition and microstructure of the materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrophysical and gas sensing properties of the materials were investigated by in situ conductivity measurements in the presence of the reducing gases CO and NH3 (20 ppm), in dry conditions (relative humidity at 25 °C RH25 = 0) and in humid air (RH25 = 30%) in the temperature range 400-550 °C. The ZnO/SiC nanocomposites were characterized by a higher concentration of chemisorbed oxygen, higher activation energy of conductivity, and higher sensor response towards CO and NH3 as compared with ZnO nanofibers. The obtained experimental results were interpreted in terms of the formation of an n-n heterojunction at the ZnO/SiC interface.

ppb-Level Selective Hydrogen Gas Detection of Pd-Functionalized In2O3-Loaded ZnO Nanofiber Gas Sensors.

Project description:Pd nanoparticle-functionalized, xIn2O3 (x = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15)-loaded ZnO nanofibers were synthesized by an electrospinning and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation method and assessed for their hydrogen gas sensing properties. Morphological and chemical analyses revealed the desired morphology and chemical composition of the synthesized nanofibers. The optimal gas sensor namely Pd-functionalized, 0.1In2O3-loaded ZnO nanofibers showed a very strong response to 172-50 ppb hydrogen gas at 350 °C, which is regarded as the optimal sensing temperature. Furthermore, the gas sensors showed excellent selectivity to hydrogen gas due to the much lower response to CO and NO2 gases. The enhanced gas response was attributed to the excellent catalytic activity of Pd to hydrogen gas, and the formation of Pd/ZnO and In2O3/ZnO heterojunctions, ZnO-ZnO homojunction, as well as the formation of PdHx. Overall, highly sensitive and selective hydrogen gas sensors can be produced based on a simple methodology using a synergistic effect from Pd functionalization and In2O3 loading in ZnO nanofibers.

Energy transfer between rare earths in layered rare-earth hydroxides.

Project description:Energy transfer between rare earths in layered rare-earth hydroxides (LRHs) is worth the intensive study because the hydroxyls that act as the bridge connecting the neighbouring rare earths would generate non-radiative transitions. This study focuses on the energy transfer in the intralayer and the adjacent layers of LRHs. A series of LEu x Tb1-x Hs (x = 0, 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 0.95) was synthesized, the basal spacing (d basal) was adjusted from 8.3 to 46 Å through ion-exchange process, and unilamellar nanosheets were prepared through a delamination process. The luminescence behaviours of the samples demonstrated the following: (1) for the delaminated nanosheets, the quenching effect of both Eu3+ and Tb3+ was hardly observed. This implies that in the intralayer, the efficiency of energy transfer is extremely low, so that highly-concentrated co-doping does not influence the luminescence and by controlling the Eu/Tb molar ratio, white light can be obtained. (2) For small d basal, e.g., 27 Å, the fluorescence quenching of Tb3+ and Eu3+ was remarkable, while for large d basal, e.g., 46 Å, the emission of Tb3+ emerged and the self-quenching between Eu3+ ions weakened. (3) The energy transfer efficiency deceased with an increase in the distance between adjacent layers. In other words, either the energy transfer between Eu3+ and Tb3+ or the energy migration between Eu3+ ions was more efficient when they were located in adjacent layers than in intralayers even when they were the nearest neighbours.

Laser-Tunable Printed ZnO Nanoparticles for Paper-Based UV Sensors with Reduced Humidity Interference.

Project description:Development of paper-based sensors that do not suffer with humidity interference is desirable for practical environmental applications. In this work, a laser processing method was reported to effectively modulate the cross-sensitivity to humidity of ZnO-based UV (Ultraviolet) sensors printed on paper substrate. The results reveal that the laser induced zinc oxide (ZnO) surface morphology contributes to the super-hydrophobicity of the printed ZnO nanoparticles, reducing humidity interference while enhancing UV sensitivity. Herein, this conducted research highlights for the first time that laser processing is an attractive choice that reduces the cross-sensitivity to water vapor in the UV sensing response of ZnO-based devices printed on paper, paving the way to low-cost and sophisticated paper-based sensors.

Data on photo-catalytic degradation of 4- chlorophenol from aqueous solution using UV/ZnO/persulfate.

Project description:The presence of chlorinated aromatic pollutants like 4- chlorophenol (4CP), even at low concentrations, in the wastewater should be controlled urgently, because of their high toxicity, carcinogenic potential and poor biodegradability. This dataset reveals the effectiveness of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) for attenuating of 4 CP. The AOP of UV/ZnO/persulfate and the influence of various parameters like pH, persulfate dosage and ZnO dosage were studied and the optimum removal conditions could be easily implied by readerships. The efficiency of > 90% was attained for degrading of 4CP by UV/ZnO/persulfate system at the experimental conditions of pH of 7, persulfate dosage of 11 mg/L, 4CP concentration of 10 mg/L, and ZnO dosage of 1 g/L. The data had a good agreement with pseudo first-order kinetic model. Thus, the UV/ZnO/persulfate system is an efficient method for decreasing 4CP from aqueous solution.

Visible and UV photo-detection in ZnO nanostructured thin films via simple tuning of solution method.

Project description:This study demonstrates significant visible light photo-detection capability of pristine ZnO nanostructure thin films possessing substantially high percentage of oxygen vacancies [Formula: see text] and zinc interstitials [Formula: see text], introduced by simple tuning of economical solution method. The demonstrated visible light photo-detection capability, in addition to the inherent UV light detection ability of ZnO, shows great dependency of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] with the nanostructure morphology. The dependency was evaluated by analyzing the presence/percentage of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] using photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Morphologies of ZnO viz. nanoparticles (NPs), nanosheets (NSs) and nanoflowers (NFs), as a result of tuning of synthesis method contended different concentrations of defects, demonstrated different photo-detection capabilities in the form of a thin film photodetector. The photo-detection capability was investigated under different light excitations (UV; 380~420 nm, white ; λ > 420 nm and green; 490~570 nm). The as fabricated NSs photodetector possessing comparatively intermediate percentage of [Formula: see text] ~ 47.7% and [Formula: see text] ~ 13.8% exhibited superior performance than that of NPs and NFs photodetectors, and ever reported photodetectors fabricated by using pristine ZnO nanostructures in thin film architecture. The adopted low cost and simplest approach makes the pristine ZnO-NSs applicable for wide-wavelength applications in optoelectronic devices.
