Multi-threshold image segmentation for melanoma based on Kapur's entropy using enhanced ant colony optimization.

ABSTRACT: Melanoma is a malignant tumor formed by the cancerous transformation of melanocytes, and its medical images contain much information. However, the percentage of the critical information in the image is small, and the noise is non-uniformly distributed. We propose a new multi-threshold image segmentation model based on the two-dimensional histogram approach to the above problem. We present an enhanced ant colony optimization for continuous domains (EACOR) in the proposed model based on the soft besiege and chase strategies. Further, EACOR is combined with two-dimensional Kapur's entropy to search for the optimal thresholds. An experiment on the IEEE CEC2014 benchmark function was conducted to measure the reliable global search capability of the EACOR algorithm in the proposed model. Moreover, we have also conducted several sets of experiments to test the validity of the image segmentation model proposed in this paper. The experimental results show that the segmented images from the proposed model outperform the comparison method in several evaluation metrics. Ultimately, the model proposed in this paper can provide high-quality samples for subsequent analysis of melanoma pathology images.

Project description:The novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) is a respiratory disease of great concern in terms of its dissemination and severity, for which X-ray imaging-based diagnosis is one of the effective complementary diagnostic methods. It is essential to be able to separate and identify lesions from their pathology images regardless of the computer-aided diagnosis techniques. Therefore, image segmentation in the pre-processing stage of COVID-19 pathology images would be more helpful for effective analysis. In this paper, to achieve highly effective pre-processing of COVID-19 pathological images by using multi-threshold image segmentation (MIS), an enhanced version of ant colony optimization for continuous domains (MGACO) is first proposed. In MGACO, not only a new move strategy is introduced, but also the Cauchy-Gaussian fusion strategy is incorporated. It has been accelerated in terms of convergence speed and has significantly enhanced its ability to jump out of the local optimum. Furthermore, an MIS method (MGACO-MIS) based on MGACO is developed, where it applies the non-local means, 2D histogram as the basis, and employs 2D Kapur's entropy as the fitness function. To demonstrate the performance of MGACO, we qualitatively analyze it in detail and compare it with other peers on 30 benchmark functions from IEEE CEC2014, which proves that it has a stronger capability of solving problems over the original ant colony optimization for continuous domains. To verify the segmentation effect of MGACO-MIS, we conducted a comparison experiment with eight other similar segmentation methods based on real pathology images of COVID-19 at different threshold levels. The final evaluation and analysis results fully demonstrate that the developed MGACO-MIS is sufficient to obtain high-quality segmentation results in the COVID-19 image segmentation and has stronger adaptability to different threshold levels than other methods. Therefore, it has been well-proven that MGACO is an excellent swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, and MGACO-MIS is also an excellent segmentation method.

Project description:BackgroundImage segmentation is an important step during the processing of medical images. For example, for the computer aid diagnostic systems for lung cancer image analysis, the segmented regions of tumors would help doctors in early diagnosis to determine timely and appropriate treatment possibilities and thereby improve the survival rate of the patients. However, general clinical routines of manual segmentation for large number of medical images are very difficult and time consuming, which is the challenge we aim to tackle using our proposed method.MethodsA novel image segmentation method with evolutionary learning technique named Group Theoretic Particle Swarm Optimization is proposed. It can tackle multi-level thresholding optimization problem during the segmentation process and rebuild the search paradigm according to the solid mathematical foundation of symmetric group from four designable aspects, which are particle encoding, solution landscape, neighborhood movement and swarm topology, respectively. The Kapur's entropy of multi-level thresholds is assessed as the objective function.ResultsIn contrast to those conventional metaheuristics methods for lung cancer image segmentation, this newly presented method generates the best performance result among them. Experimental results show that its Kapur's entropy has the value of 9.07, which is 16% higher than the worst case. Computational time is acceptable at the cost of 173.730 seconds, average level of evaluation metrics [Kappa, Precision, Recall, F1-measure, intersection over union (IoU) and receiver operating characteristic (ROC)] is over 90%, and search process of multi-level threshold combination would finally converge in the later phase of iterations after 700. The ablation study indicates that all components are significant to the contributions of our proposed method.ConclusionsGroup Theoretic Particle Swarm Optimization for multi-level threshold segmentation is an efficient way to split a medical image into distinct regions and extract tumor tissues regions from the background. It maintains the balanced relationship between diversification and intensification during the search process and helps clinicians to make the diagnosis more accurately. Our proposed method processes potential medical value and clinical meanings.

Project description:Allocation of goods is a key feature in defining the connection between the individual and the collective scale in any society. Both the process by which goods are to be distributed, and the resulting allocation to the members of the society may affect the success of the population as a whole. One of the most striking natural examples of a highly successful cooperative society is the ant colony which often acts as a single superorganism. In particular, each individual within the ant colony has a "communal stomach" which is used to store and share food with the other colony members by mouth to mouth feeding. Sharing food between communal stomachs allows the colony as a whole to get its food requirements and, more so, allows each individual within the colony to reach its nutritional intake target. The vast majority of colony members do not forage independently but obtain their food through secondary interactions in which food is exchanged between individuals. The global effect of this exchange is not well understood. To gain better understanding into this process we used fluorescence imaging to measure how food from a single external source is distributed and mixed within a Camponotus sanctus ant colony. Using entropic measures to quantify food-blending, we show that while collected food flows into all parts of the colony it mixes only partly. We show that mixing is controlled by the ants' interaction rule which implies that only a fraction of the maximal potential is actually transferred. This rule leads to a robust blending process: i.e., neither the exact food volume that is transferred, nor the interaction schedule are essential to generate the global outcome. Finally, we show how the ants' interaction rules may optimize a trade-off between fast dissemination and efficient mixing. Our results regarding the distribution of a single food source provide a baseline for future studies on distributed regulation of multiple food sources in social insect colonies.
