The impact of economic policy uncertainty on firms' investment in innovation: Evidence from Chinese listed firms.

ABSTRACT: This paper uses data of Chinese listed enterprises and economic policy uncertainty index for empirical analysis, and conducts a study through three channels of monetary policy uncertainty affecting enterprise innovation investment, and finds that economic policy uncertainty has a positive promotion effect on enterprise R&D investment, and its increase in tension is instead a clear signal that can effectively increase enterprise R&D investment, this promotion effect seems unexpected, this paper Through theoretical analysis and combined with the actual practice, this incentive effect is found to be in line with reality. However, in the subsequent heterogeneity analysis, this paper finds that it positively promotes R&D investment when economic policy uncertainty is low and may have a suppressive effect on R&D investment when monetary policy uncertainty is high.

Supply network position, digital transformation and innovation performance: Evidence from listed Chinese manufacturing firms.

Project description:This study provides evidence for the supply network position influencing innovation performance and the moderating effect of digital transformation. Supply chain relationships have been evaluated in earlier research to demonstrate how concentrations of customers and suppliers may either favorably or adversely impact innovation. These metrics, however, only take into account how closely a firm is connected to its direct customers or suppliers. This study integrates the top five suppliers and customers of Chinese listed manufacturing firms and considers the relationship embeddedness of each firm's direct customers and suppliers, as well as the structure embeddedness among the customers' customers, customers' suppliers, suppliers' customers, and suppliers' suppliers to reveal the true impact of supply chain relationships on innovation performance. The top five suppliers and consumers of each firm are chosen to build a supply network for each year using panel data of listed Chinese manufacturing firms from 2013 to 2020. Social network analysis is used to determine network centrality and structural holes. The results show that in the supply network, network centrality and structural holes are significantly negatively correlated with innovation performance, especially in small and medium-sized firms, non-state-owned firms, and firms in recession phase. According to the moderating effect model, digital transformation is an efficient way to reduce the negative effect of supply network position on innovation performance. The research results will further improve the supply network cooperation mechanism, which is of great significance for improving supply chain resilience and firms' innovation.

The impact of mixed-ownership reform on zombie firms: Evidence from Chinese listed SOEs.

Project description:Clearing out zombie firms is a critical challenge for both developed and developing countries. This article draws upon data from Chinese listed SOEs to examine the impact of mixed-ownership reform on zombie firms. The findings indicate that non-state-owned shareholders participating in mixed-ownership reform by appointing directors can help reduce the possibility of SOEs becoming zombie firms, while participating in mixed-ownership reform through shareholding is not significant. Moreover, the impact of mixed-ownership reform on zombie firms is more pronounced for firms in competitive industries and firms located in the eastern region of China. Mechanism analysis reveals that the reduction of inefficient investment has a positive mediating effect between mixed-ownership reform and zombie firms.

Promoting and inhibiting: Corporate charitable donations and innovation investment under different motivation orientations--Evidence from Chinese listed companies.

Project description:Corporate charitable donations under different motivations will have different effects on innovation investment through different action paths, which provides a new perspective to solve the inconsistency of existing research results. Based on the resource-dependent and principal-agent theories, this paper compares and discusses the relationship between charitable donations and innovation investment under different motivations. Using 2008 ~2019 relevant data of listed companies as research samples, a mixed regression model is established for the hypothesis test, and further examines the state-ownership of its moderating role. The results show that the altruistic motivation-oriented corporate donations have a significant inverted u-shaped effect on innovation investment. The tool motivation-oriented corporate donations have a significant U-shaped effect on innovation investment. Moreover, it is further found that for ST (Special Treatment) corporates with the risk of delisting in the tool motivation-oriented charitable donations type, the corporate charitable donations have a significant negative effect on innovation investment. State-ownership can enhance the inverted U-shaped relationship between altruistic motivation-oriented corporate donations and innovation investment but weaken the U-shaped relationship between tool motivation-oriented corporate donations and innovation investment.

Environmental protection subsidies, green technology innovation and environmental performance: Evidence from China's heavy-polluting listed firms.

Project description:The heavy-polluting industry is inexorably to responsible for the deterioration of the environment. Improving environmental performance is an unavoidable decision for heavy-polluting firms to ensure sustainable development under the policy framework of the carbon peak target. This study provides theoretical and empirical evidence for the effect of environmental protection subsidies on environmental performance. This study constructs basic and mediating effect models to measure how environmental protection subsidies affect environmental performance using panel data of China's heavy-polluting listed firms from 2008 to 2019. This is an important outcome of industrial green transformation in environmental governance and provides a scientific basis for government departments to formulate environmental policies. The results of the empirical analysis show that environmental protection subsidies can improve the environmental performance of heavy-polluting listed firms. After receiving environmental protection subsidies, firms engaged in clean and green production through green technology innovation, thereby reducing external environmental pollution and improving their environmental performance. The mediating role of green technology innovation in the relationship between environmental protection subsidies and environmental performance is significant only in state-owned firms and firms in Eastern China. The research results may further guide the direction of green development of heavy-polluting industries, and thus promote harmonious development between the environment and the economy.

The impact of foreign direct investment on green innovation efficiency: Evidence from Chinese provinces.

Project description:Improving green innovation efficiency (GIE) is the key to achieve high-quality economic development in China, and the introduction of foreign direct investment (FDI) has become an important path choice to promote the GIE. Based on the data of 30 provinces in China, this paper explores the linear and nonlinear effects of FDI on GIE from both quantity and quality perspectives, and further analyzes the mediating role of environmental regulation level. The results show that: (1) From 2011 to 2020, the GIE of all provinces in China generally shows an upward trend. (2) The quantity and quality of FDI have a significant positive impact on the improvement of GIE in China's provinces, and this impact has regional heterogeneity. (3) The quantity and quality of FDI can promote the improvement of GIE in China through the level of environmental regulation (ER). (4) With the level of knowledge accumulation and GIE as the threshold variables, the quantity and quality of FDI have a single threshold effect on the GIE of China's provinces. The conclusions of this study provide some policy implications for local governments to make full use of FDI to perform green innovation activities.

Economic policy uncertainty and common prosperity within the enterprise: Evidence from the Chinese market.

Project description:In the continuous development of the Chinese economy, the desire for common prosperity among the people has become increasingly strong. However, the complex domestic and international situations, along with the economic uncertainties post-pandemic, have introduced significant uncertainties into government economic policies. In the long term, this uncertainty has a profound impact on intra-enterprise common prosperity, affecting society at large. This paper focuses on non-financial listed companies on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2011 to 2020, examining the negative effects of economic policy uncertainty on intra-enterprise common prosperity. The results indicate that economic policy uncertainty has a significant adverse impact on intra-enterprise common prosperity, and this impact is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises, those in the growth life cycle, and companies with poor innovation capabilities and limited external support. Companies enhancing social responsibility and overall factor productivity can help mitigate these negative effects. Furthermore, in dynamic features, as the level of intra-enterprise common prosperity increases, the negative impact of economic policy uncertainty gradually diminishes, while the positive effects of overall factor productivity and corporate social responsibility on enterprises become more evident.

Exploring the link between economic policy uncertainty, financial development, ecological innovation and environmental degradation; evidence from OECD countries.

Project description:Governments have been concerned with balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, it has been noted that sustainable development is interconnected with economic variables, the institutional framework, and the efficacy of ecological regulatory measures. This study experimentally examines the correlation of economic policy uncertainty (EPU), financial development (FD), ecological innovation (EI), corruption (IQ), foreign direct investment (FDI), trade openness (TR), natural resource rent (NRR), and CO2 emission. We utilized longitudinal data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries from 2003 to 2021 to address the existing research void. This study used sequential processes of the linear panel data model (SELPDM) and the SYS-GMM approaches in obtaining consistent and efficient results. The inverse U-shaped relationship between FD and environmental degradation (ED) is confirmed by the long-term elasticity estimates generated by the SELPDM method Elasticity estimates for the long-run show that rigorous ecological regulations, higher renewable energy utilization, higher FD and less corruption, an interaction between FD and rigorous ecological regulations all contribute to reduced ED. Its also being observed that both EPU, FDI and trade openness are positively affecting the ED. It confirms the idea of pollution refuge between the OECD countries. The causality test results show that corruption and FD had reciprocal links with ED, while FDI, trade openness and strict environmental policies were also found to have bidirectional linkage with ED. To achieve sustainable development and prevent environmental degradation in the long term, we propose implementing an institutional financial framework and FD in OECD nations. This may be accomplished by focusing on the effectiveness of environmental regulatory laws and creating a conducive institutional environment.

Does the digital transformation of enterprises affect capital mismatch? evidence from Chinese listed firms.

Project description:In this study, based on the data of the Chinese listed firms, the effect of digital transformation on capital mismatch was examined. And the potential mechanism was also further discussed. It was found that digital transformation can significantly suppress capital mismatch, especially for non-state-owned enterprises, mature enterprises, and regions with high marketization and financial technology level. In addition, management capability and information environment are potential influencing mechanisms of digital transformation to suppress capital mismatch. These findings have important implications for revealing the relationship between enterprise digital transformation and capital mismatch, provides new ideas for improving the efficiency of capital allocation, and also provides important insights for enterprises to accelerate digital transformation and promote the high-quality development of enterprises.

Can the low-carbon city pilot policy promote firms' low-carbon innovation: Evidence from China.

Project description:The low-carbon city pilot policy is an environmental regulation aimed at reducing carbon emissions at the municipal level. Previous research mostly focused on evaluating its environmental performance and discovered it could enhance pilot cities' low-carbon innovation. However, the effects of the low-carbon city pilot policy on firm-level low-carbon innovation and their economic impact have yet to be investigated. This research uses a sample of Chinese A-share listed firms and the difference-in-difference method to examine the effect of the low-carbon city pilot policy on firms' low-carbon innovation. The baseline regression showed that the low-carbon city pilot policy could greatly encourage low-carbon innovation among firms in pilot cities. The mechanism analysis demonstrated that this improvement effect is attained by easing these firms' financing constraints. According to the heterogeneity analysis, we discovered that state-owned firms and firms situated in pilot zones with municipal secretaries who have larger promotion incentives are more susceptible to this policy. Additionally, the research on this policy's economic impact revealed that, following its adoption, the market value and comparative advantages of the firms in the pilot areas also increased. The findings of this study have implications for the enhancement and national expansion of low-carbon policies adopted at the city level.

Economic policy uncertainty and presidential approval: Evidence from Latin America.

Project description:This paper analyzes the extent to which economic policy uncertainty affects presidential approval in four Latin American countries (Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico). Using panel (time-series cross-sectional) estimation methods, we show that economic policy uncertainty has a negative impact on presidential approval in our sample. A one-standard-deviation increase in the level of economic uncertainty reduces presidential approval by approximately 12 percent. Our results are consistent with the political economy model of Alesina et al. (1993), which shows that voters are less likely to re-elect the incumbent when faced with uncertainty about economic policy. Incumbent competence signalling can exarcerbate this effect.
