Conformational deformation of a multi-jointed elastic loop.

ABSTRACT: A new class of deformation is presented for a planar loop structure made up of slender elastic bodies and joints. In demonstrating the circumferential shortening of the multi-jointed elastic loop, diverse three-dimensional (3D) deformations emerge through piecewise deflections and discrete rotations. These 3D morphologies correspond to conformations of molecular ring systems. Through image processing, the 3D reconstructions of the deformed structures are characterized by number, geometry, and initial imperfections of the body segments. We elucidate from measurements that the conformational deformation without self-stress results from a cyclical assembly of compressive bending of elastic bodies with high shear rigidity. The mechanical insights gained may apply in controlling the polymorphism exhibited by the cyclical structures across scales.

Adaptive Deformation Control for Elastic Linear Objects.

Project description:This paper addresses the general problem of deformable linear object manipulation. The main application we consider is in the field of agriculture, for plant grasping, but may have interests in other tasks such as human daily activities and industrial production. We specifically consider an elastic linear object where one of its endpoints is fixed, and another point can be grasped by a robotic arm. To deal with the mentioned problem, we propose a model-free method to control the state of an arbitrary point that can be at any place along the object's length. Our approach allows the robot to manipulate the object without knowing any model parameters or offline information of the object's deformation. An adaptive control strategy is proposed for regulating the state of any point automatically deforming the object into the desired location. A control law is developed to regulate the object's shape thanks to the adaptive estimation of the system parameters and its states. This method can track a desired manipulation trajectory to reach the target point, which leads to a smooth deformation without drastic changes. A Lyapunov-based argument is presented for the asymptotic convergence of the system that shows the process's stability and convergence to desired state values. To validate the controller, numerical simulations involving two different deformation models are conducted, and performances of the proposed algorithm are investigated through full-scale experiments.

Non-Hookean large elastic deformation in bulk crystalline metals.

Project description:Crystalline metals can have large theoretical elastic strain limits. However, a macroscopic block of conventional crystalline metals practically suffers a very limited elastic deformation of <0.5% with a linear stress-strain relationship obeying Hooke's law. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a large tensile elastic deformation with an elastic strain of >4.3% in a Cu-based single crystalline alloy at its bulk scale at room temperature. The large macroscopic elastic strain that originates from the reversible lattice strain of a single phase is demonstrated by in situ microstructure and neutron diffraction observations. Furthermore, the elastic reversible deformation, which is nonhysteretic and quasilinear, is associated with a pronounced elastic softening phenomenon. The increase in the stress gives rise to a reduced Young's modulus, unlike the traditional Hooke's law behaviour. The experimental discovery of a non-Hookean large elastic deformation offers the potential for the development of bulk crystalline metals as high-performance mechanical springs or for new applications via "elastic strain engineering."

Atomic picture of elastic deformation in a metallic glass.

Project description:The tensile behavior of a Ni60Nb40 metallic glass (MG) has been studied by using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculation with a large cell containing 1024 atoms (614 Ni and 410 Nb). We provide insight into how a super elastic limit can be achieved in a MG. Spatially inhomogeneous responses of single atoms and also major polyhedra are found to change greatly with increasing external stress when the strain is over 2%, causing the intrinsically viscoelastic behavior. We uncover the origin of the observed super elastic strain limit under tension (including linear and viscoelastic strains) in small-sized MG samples, mainly caused by inhomogeneous distribution of excess volumes in the form of newly formed subatomic cavities.

Integrin-based mechanosensing through conformational deformation.

Project description:Conversion of integrins from low to high affinity states, termed activation, is important in biological processes, including immunity, hemostasis, angiogenesis, and embryonic development. Integrin activation is regulated by large-scale conformational transitions from closed, low affinity states to open, high affinity states. Although it has been suggested that substrate stiffness shifts the conformational equilibrium of integrin and governs its unbinding, here, we address the role of integrin conformational activation in cellular mechanosensing. Comparison of wild-type versus activating mutants of integrin αVβ3 show that activating mutants shift cell spreading, focal adhesion kinase activation, traction stress, and force on talin toward high stiffness values at lower stiffness. Although all activated integrin mutants showed equivalent binding affinity for soluble ligands, the β3 S243E mutant showed the strongest shift in mechanical responses. To understand this behavior, we used coarse-grained computational models derived from molecular level information. The models predicted that wild-type integrin αVβ3 displaces under force and that activating mutations shift the required force toward lower values, with S243E showing the strongest effect. Cellular stiffness sensing thus correlates with computed effects of force on integrin conformation. Together, these data identify a role for force-induced integrin conformational deformation in cellular mechanosensing.

Elastocapillary deformation of thin elastic ribbons in 2D foam columns.

Project description:The ability of liquid interfaces to shape slender elastic structures provides powerful strategies to control the architecture of mechanical self assemblies. However, elastocapillarity-driven intelligent design remains unexplored in more complex architected liquids - such as foams. Here we propose a model system which combines an assembly of bubbles and a slender elastic structure. Arrangements of soap bubbles in confined environments form well-defined periodic structures, dictated by Plateau's laws. We consider a 2D foam column formed in a container with square cross-section in which we introduce an elastomer ribbon, leading to architected structures whose geometry is guided by a competition between elasticity and capillarity. In this system, we quantify both experimentally and theoretically the equilibrium shapes, using X-ray micro-tomography and energy minimisation techniques. Beyond the understanding of the amplitude of the wavy elastic ribbon deformation, we provide a detailed analysis of the profile of the ribbon, and show that such a setup can be used to grant a shape to a UV-curable composite slender structure, as a foam-forming technique suitable to miniaturisation. In more general terms, this work provides a stepping stone towards an improved understanding of the interactions between liquid foams and slender structures.

Active open-loop control of elastic turbulence.

Project description:We demonstrate through numerical solutions of the Oldroyd-B model in a two-dimensional Taylor-Couette geometry that the onset of elastic turbulence in a viscoelastic fluid can be controlled by imposed shear-rate modulations, one form of active open-loop control. Slow modulations display rich and complex behavior where elastic turbulence is still present, while it vanishes for fast modulations and a laminar response with the Taylor-Couette base flow is recovered. We find that the transition from the laminar to the turbulent state is supercritical and occurs at a critical Deborah number. In the state diagram of both control parameters, Weissenberg versus Deborah number, we identify the region of elastic turbulence. We also quantify the transition by the flow resistance, for which we derive an analytic expression in the laminar regime within the linear Oldroyd-B model. Finally, we provide an approximation for the transition line in the state diagram introducing an effective critical Weissenberg number in comparison to constant shear. Deviations from the numerical result indicate that the physics behind the observed laminar-to-turbulent transition is more complex under time-modulated shear flow.

Exploring the antifouling effect of elastic deformation by DEM-CFD coupling simulation.

Project description:The influence of elastic deformation and elastic modulus on the release of adhered bacteria was investigated in this paper. Four silicone elastomers (SE) with different elastic moduli and one rigid polystyrene sheet were prepared to verify the antifouling effect of elastic deformation. The SE film has an elastic deformation effect under the stimulus of fluid medium, which makes the surface unstable. That could reduce the adhesion of fouling organisms and provide a foul-release basis. Distinct anti-adhesion properties were observed in our study in that cells more easily adhered to the rigid surface than the elastic surfaces under hydrodynamic conditions. However, the bacterial attachment test showed a similar antifouling performance of SE and the rigid surface under static conditions. To investigate the anti-adhesion ability of the elastic surface and rigid surface, the bacterial adhesive kinetics were studied by Discrete Element Method (DEM)-Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) coupling simulation. Results indicated the number of bacteria adhering on the elastic wall was significantly lower than on the rigid wall. And as the elastic modulus increased, the bacterial adhesion increased accordingly within a certain range. This work should not only enhance understanding of elastomer-based antifouling materials, but also facilitate the design and construction of other types non-toxic foul-release materials.

Loop motions of triosephosphate isomerase observed with elastic networks.

Project description:The internal dynamics of triosephosphate isomerase have been investigated with elastic networks, with and without a substrate bound. The slowest modes of motion involve large domain motions but also a loop motion that conforms to the changes observed between the crystal structures and . Our computations confirm that the different motions of this loop are important in several of the computed slowest modes. We have shown that elastic network computations on this protein system can combine atoms for the functional parts of the structure with coarse-grained (cg) representations of the remainder of the structure in several different ways. Similar loop motions are seen with elastic network models for atomistic and mixed cg models. The loop motions are reproduced with an overlap of 0.75-0.79 by combining the four slowest modes of motion for the free and complex forms of the enzyme.

Irregular and suppressed elastic deformation by a structural twist in cellulose nanofibre models.

Project description:The elastic responsiveness of single cellulose nanofibres is important for advanced analysis of biological tissues and their use in sophisticated functional materials. However, the mechanical responsiveness derived from the twisted structure of cellulose nanofibres (CNFs) has remained unexplored. In this study, finite element simulations were applied to characterize the deformation response derived from the torsional structure by performing tensile and bending tests of an unconventionally very long and twisted rod model, having the known dimensional parameters and properties of CNFs. The antagonistic action of two types of structural elements (a contour twist and a curvilinear coordinate) was found to result in an irregular deformation response but with only small fluctuations. The contour twist generated rotational displacements under tensile load, but the curvilinear coordinate suppressed rotational displacement. Under bending stress, the contour twist minimized irregular bending deformation because of the orthotropic properties and made the bending stress transferability a highly linear response.

Effects of Host-rock Fracturing on Elastic-deformation Source Models of Volcano Deflation.

Project description:Volcanoes commonly inflate or deflate during episodes of unrest or eruption. Continuum mechanics models that assume linear elastic deformation of the Earth's crust are routinely used to invert the observed ground motions. The source(s) of deformation in such models are generally interpreted in terms of magma bodies or pathways, and thus form a basis for hazard assessment and mitigation. Using discontinuum mechanics models, we show how host-rock fracturing (i.e. non-elastic deformation) during drainage of a magma body can progressively change the shape and depth of an elastic-deformation source. We argue that this effect explains the marked spatio-temporal changes in source model attributes inferred for the March-April 2007 eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano, La Reunion. We find that pronounced deflation-related host-rock fracturing can: (1) yield inclined source model geometries for a horizontal magma body; (2) cause significant upward migration of an elastic-deformation source, leading to underestimation of the true magma body depth and potentially to a misinterpretation of ascending magma; and (3) at least partly explain underestimation by elastic-deformation sources of changes in sub-surface magma volume.
