Project description:The rotational dynamics of an organic cation in hybrid halide perovskites is intricately linked to the phase transitions that are known to occur in these materials; however, the exact relation is not clear. We have performed detailed model studies on methylammonium lead iodide and formamidinium lead iodide to unravel the relation between rotational dynamics and phase behavior. We show that the occurrence of the phase transitions is due to a subtle interplay between dipole-dipole interactions between the organic cations, specific (hydrogen bonding) interactions between the organic cation and the lead iodide lattice, and deformation of the lead iodide lattice in reaction to the reduced rotational motion of the organic cations. This combination of factors results in phase transitions at specific temperatures, leading to the formation of large organized domains of dipoles. The latter can have significant effects on the electronic structure of these materials.

Project description:Cation engineering provides a route to control the structure and properties of hybrid halide perovskites, which has resulted in the highest performance solar cells based on mixtures of Cs, methylammonium, and formamidinium. Here, we present a multi-technique experimental and theoretical study of structural phase transitions, structural phases and dipolar dynamics in the mixed methylammonium/dimethylammonium MA1-xDMAxPbBr3 hybrid perovskites (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). Our results demonstrate a significant suppression of the structural phase transitions, enhanced disorder and stabilization of the cubic phase even for a small amount of dimethylammonium cations. As the dimethylammonium concentration approaches the solubility limit in MAPbBr3, we observe the disappearance of the structural phase transitions and indications of a glassy dipolar phase. We also reveal a significant tunability of the dielectric permittivity upon mixing of the molecular cations that arises from frustrated electric dipoles.

Project description:Lead halide perovskites are extensively investigated as efficient solution-processable materials for photovoltaic applications. The greatest stability and performance of these compounds are achieved by mixing different ions at all three sites of the APbX3 structure. Despite the extensive use of mixed lead halide perovskites in photovoltaic devices, a detailed and systematic understanding of the mixing-induced effects on the structural and dynamic aspects of these materials is still lacking. The goal of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge on mixing effects on the structural phase transitions, crystal symmetry, cation and lattice dynamics, and phase diagrams of three- and low-dimensional lead halide perovskites. This review analyzes different mixing recipes and ingredients providing a comprehensive picture of mixing effects and their relation to the attractive properties of these materials.

Project description:The suitable band structure is vital for perovskite solar cells, which greatly affect the high photoelectric conversion efficiency. Cation substitution is an effective approach to tune the electric structure, carrier concentration, and optical absorption of hybrid lead iodine perovskites. In this work, the electronic structures and optical properties of cation (Bi, Sn, and TI) doped tetragonal formamidinium lead iodine CH(NH2)2PbI3 (FAPbI3) are studied by first-principles calculations. For comparison, the cation-doped tetragonal methylammonium lead iodine CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) are also considered. The calculated formation energies reveal that the Sn atom is easier to dope in the tetragonal MAPbI3/FAPbI3 structure due to the small formation energy of about 0.3 eV. Besides, the band gap of Sn-doped MAPbI3/FAPbI3 is 1.30/1.40 eV, which is considerably smaller than the un-doped tetragonal MAPbI3/FAPbI3. More importantly, compare with the un-doped tetragonal MAPbI3/FAPbI3, the Sn-doped MAPbI3 and FAPbI3 have the larger optical absorption coefficient and theoretical maximum efficiency, especially for Sn-doped FAPbI3. The lower formation energy, suitable band gap and outstanding optical absorption of the Sn-doped FAPbI3 make it promising candidates for high-efficient perovskite cells.

Project description:The study of MAPbI3 phase transitions based on temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy has recently gained a huge attention. Photoluminescence (PL) investigations of the tetragonal-orthorhombic transition suggest that tetragonal nanodomains are present below the transition temperature and signatures associated with tetragonal segregations are observed. We have studied the impact of phase nanosegregation across the orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transition of MAPbI3 on the system's properties employing a tight binding (TB) approach. The particle swarm optimization has been used to obtain a consistent set of TB parameters, where the target properties of the system have been derived by first-principles calculations. The theoretical results have been compared with the measured PL spectra for a temperature range going from 10 to 100 K. Our model effectively captures the carriers' localization phenomenon induced by the presence of residual tetragonal nanodomains and demonstrates that the assumption of phase nanosegregation can explain the low-energy features in the PL spectra of MAPbI3.

Project description:In this work, we present a detailed investigation of the optical properties of hybrid perovskite building blocks, [PbI2+n ]n- , that form in solutions of CH3 NH3 PbI3 and PbI2 . The absorbance, photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of CH3 NH3 PbI3 and PbI2 solutions were measured in various solvents and a broad concentration range. Both CH3 NH3 PbI3 and PbI2 solutions exhibit absorption features attributed to [PbI3 ]1- and [PbI4 ]2- complexes. Therefore, we propose a new mechanism for the formation of polymeric polyiodide plumbates in solutions of pristine PbI2 . For the first time, we show that the [PbI2+n ]n- species in both solutions of CH3 NH3 PbI3 and PbI2 exhibit a photoluminescence peak at about 760 nm. Our findings prove that the spectroscopic properties of both CH3 NH3 PbI3 and PbI2 solutions are dominated by coordination complexes between Pb2+ and I- . Finally, the impact of these complexes on the properties of solid-state perovskite semiconductors is discussed in terms of defect formation and defect tolerance.

Project description:Two new organic-inorganic hybrid double perovskites (R3HQ)4CsSm(NO3)8 (1) (R3HQ = (R)-(-)-3-quinuclidinol) and (R3HQ)4CsEu(NO3)8 (2) were synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit obvious phase transitions at 379 and 375 K, respectively, confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction. The rapid switching between high- and low-dielectric states makes it a typical dielectric material with a switchable dielectric constant for thermal stimulus response. Furthermore, 1 and 2 show attractive photoluminescence and paramagnetic behavior, and the fluorescence quantum yield of 2 reached 14.6%. These results show that compounds 1 and 2 can be used as excellent candidates for multifunctional intelligent materials, which also provides a new way for development of multifunctional materials.

Project description:It is an important but difficult issue to identify charge and energy transfer processes in materials where multiple band gaps coexist. Conventional methods using transient absorption and optoelectrical characterization based on devices could not provide a clear picture of transfer dynamics. According to the bimolecular and monomolecular nature of each process, the carrier dynamics is supposed to solve this issue. In this work, we established a novel, convenient and universal strategy based on the calculation of carrier dynamics to distinguish energy/charge transfer and reveal their transfer dynamics in methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) films with mixing wide-band gap small grains and narrow-band gap large grains. A highly efficient charge transfer process is confirmed with a high negative nonradiative bimolecular recombination coefficient of -2.12 × 10-7 cm-3 s-1, indicating that free carriers within small grains are efficiently transferred from small grains to large grains. As a result, emission from large grains becomes dominant when increasing the photoexcitation intensity. In addition, current-density-dependent electroluminescence results in emission only from large grains, further verifying the charge transfer process. Moreover, it is interesting to find that when decreasing the size of small grains, the charge transfer process is facilitated, leading to an increased nonradiative bimolecular recombination coefficient from -2.12 × 10-7 to -4.01 × 10-7 cm-3 s-1 in large grains. Our work provides a convenient strategy to identify and quantify energy and charge transfer in metal halide perovskites, which can be used to enrich our understanding of perovskite photophysics.

Project description:In high fluence applications of lead halide perovskites for light-emitting diodes and lasers, multi-polaron interactions and associated Auger recombination limit the device performance. However, the relationship of the ultrafast and strongly lattice coupled carrier dynamics to nanoscale heterogeneities has remained elusive. Here, in ultrafast visible-pump infrared-probe nano-imaging of the photoinduced carrier dynamics in triple cation perovskite films, a ~20 % variation in sub-ns relaxation dynamics with spatial disorder on tens to hundreds of nanometer is resolved. We attribute the non-uniform relaxation dynamics to the heterogeneous evolution of polaron delocalization and increasing scattering time. The initial high-density excitation results in faster relaxation due to strong many-body interactions, followed by extended carrier lifetimes at lower densities. These results point towards the missing link between the optoelectronic heterogeneity and associated carrier dynamics to guide synthesis and device engineering for improved perovskites device performance. The optoelectronic performance of lead halide perovskite in highfluence applications are hindered by heterogeneous multi-polaron interactions in the nanoscale. Here, Nishda et al. spatially resolve sub-ns relaxation dynamics on the nanometer scale by ultrafast infrared pumpprobe nanoimaging.

Project description:The prevalence of background hole doping in tin halide perovskites usually dominates their recombination dynamics. The addition of excess Sn halide source to the precursor solution is the most frequently used approach to reduce the hole doping and reveals photo-carrier dynamics related to defects activity. This study presents an experimental and theoretical investigation on defects under light irradiation in tin halide perovskites by combining measurements of photoluminescence with first principles computational modeling. It finds that tin perovskite thin films prepared with an excess of Sn halide sources exhibit an enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity over time under continuous excitation in inert atmosphere. The authors propose a model in which light irradiation promotes the annihilation of VSn 2- /Sni 2+ Frenkel pairs, reducing the deep carrier trapping centers associated with such defect and increasing the radiative recombination. Importantly, these observations can be traced in the open-circuit voltage dynamics of tin-based halide perovskite solar cells, implying the relevance of controlling the Sn photochemistry to stabilize tin perovskite devices.
