Living in Liquid Times: The Relationships among Job Insecurity, Life Uncertainty, and Psychosocial Well-Being.

ABSTRACT: Stress research has widely documented how uncertainty represents a strong stressor that, in general, is negatively associated with well-being. While the literature on job insecurity about this topic is extensive and exhaustive, empirical research on the outcomes of life uncertainty, namely the perception and feeling of precariousness regarding the present and future of one's own life, is yet to be fully explored. In the present paper, we aimed to investigate the relationships among job insecurity, life uncertainty, and psychosocial well-being outcomes, specifically, with a focus on job satisfaction and burnout. The participants were 357 workers (M = 146 and F = 211), with an average age of 41.78 y.o. (SD = 13.49), who completed an online questionnaire containing, in addition to sociodemographics information, measures of the study variables, namely job insecurity, life uncertainty, job satisfaction, and burnout. The results pointed out negative relationships of both job insecurity and life uncertainty with individual well-being, as they were negatively associated with job satisfaction and positively related to burnout. In a path analysis with latent variables, life uncertainty proved to fully mediate the relationship between job insecurity and psychosocial well-being.

Project description:Objective: To assess the impact of on-call duties on veterinarians' job satisfaction, well-being and personal relationships. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Sample: The sample was obtained from Veterinary Information Network (VIN) members in private practice within the United States. Procedures: A link to an anonymous online survey was distributed via an email invitation to all Veterinary Information Network (VIN) members with access from August 15, 2017 to October 21, 2017. Results: A total of 1,945 responses were recorded. The majority of those who reported having on-call duties were female associates. Composite scales were created to assess the impact of on-call shifts on job satisfaction and well-being. Multiple linear regression was conducted and found that gender (p = 0.0311), associate status (p < 0.0001), and age (p = 0.0293) were all significantly associated with on-call related job satisfaction. Additionally, multiple linear regression found that gender (p = 0.0039), associate status (p < 0.0057), and age (p < 0.0001) were all significantly associated with on-call related well-being. On-call shifts were reported by many to have a negative impact on job satisfaction and well-being; this was especially pronounced for female associates. Females had on-call related job satisfaction scores that were, on average, 1.27 points lower than that of males (lower scores equates to lower job satisfaction). Further, females' average on-call related well-being scores were 1.15 points higher than that of males (lower scores equates to higher well-being). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: This study suggests that on-call shifts have a negative impact on veterinarian job satisfaction, well-being and personal relationships. The negative impact on job satisfaction and well-being is greatest for female associates. Veterinary medicine has been identified as a stressful occupation that can lead to psychological distress. It is therefore important to critically assess current practices that appear to increase stress and reduce emotional well-being. For this reason, it is suggested that veterinary hospitals explore alternative options to traditional on-call shifts.

Project description:BackgroundImproved treatment options for congenital heart disease (CHD) lead to a growing number of women with CHD at reproductive age. Due to physical and psychological burden, pregnancies in women with CHD often count for high-risk. Resulting emotional distress can adversely impact pregnancy, motherhood and fetal health. The present study aims to retrospectively investigate mental outcomes and indices of adjustment in women with CHD before, during and after pregnancy. The novel concept of illness identity is applied to explain how patients experience and integrate their CHD into their identities.MethodsPatient-reported outcome measures on mental functioning and illness identity were assessed in a sample of 121 postpartum women with CHD [mean age: 42.7±9.2 (range, 27-81) years] at the German Heart Centre Munich between August and November 2021 in a cross-sectional design. Descriptive analyses, correlations and linear regression models were calculated.ResultsRetrospectively assessed prevalence of emotional distress before giving birth was high (47.0%) and peaked shortly after childbirth in terms of elevated symptoms of postpartum depression and trauma. During the course of maternity, emotional distress decreased significantly (24.1%, P<0.001). Overall, postpartum women demonstrated high scores in functional illness identity states (i.e., acceptance and enrichment) and low scores in dysfunctional states (i.e., rejection and engulfment). CHD severity was not directly associated with mental outcomes (P>0.05), whereas maternal cardiovascular risk, according to the WHO classification, was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of postpartum trauma (t=2.485, P=0.015).ConclusionsPostpartum mental health problems, such as (postpartum) depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress can become a serious burden which might be detrimental to the mother's well-being and her infant's development. Present findings emphasise the urgent need for a holistic approach focusing on pregnant women with CHD starting at the prepartum stage to prevent adverse consequences and promote maternal well-being. Illness identity might become an important target construct for clinical practice as it may positively and enduringly influence mental well-being of pregnant women with CHD.
