Neglected Importance of Anharmonicity in Quantifying the Renner-Teller Effect.

ABSTRACT: Linear molecules in degenerate electronic states are influenced by the Renner-Teller (RT) effect. Currently the formula to quantify this vibronic interaction only considers the harmonic term. However, such a harmonic formula cannot well describe molecules that have double-well potential along the bending coordinate. In this work, we propose a new formula to quantify the RT effect by explicitly including the anharmonic term. A sign function and a delta function are additionally included to distinguish different scenarios. It is mathematically proved that the new formula is capable of differentiating different degrees of RT splitting. Representative molecules of different types are calculated. According to the new formula, molecules experiencing a weak RT effect have a positive parameter smaller than 1. For those experiencing a medium RT effect, the parameter will be negative. For others experiencing a large RT effect, the parameter will be larger than 1.

Imaging the Renner-Teller effect using laser-induced electron diffraction.

Project description:Structural information on electronically excited neutral molecules can be indirectly retrieved, largely through pump-probe and rotational spectroscopy measurements with the aid of calculations. Here, we demonstrate the direct structural retrieval of neutral carbonyl disulfide (CS2) in the [Formula: see text] excited electronic state using laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED). We unambiguously identify the ultrafast symmetric stretching and bending of the field-dressed neutral CS2 molecule with combined picometer and attosecond resolution using intrapulse pump-probe excitation and measurement. We invoke the Renner-Teller effect to populate the [Formula: see text] excited state in neutral CS2, leading to bending and stretching of the molecule. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of LIED in retrieving the geometric structure of CS2, which is known to appear as a two-center scatterer.

Vibronic Coupling in Spherically Encapsulated, Diatomic Molecules: Prediction of a Renner-Teller-like Effect for Endofullerenes.

Project description:In the year 1933, Herzberg and Teller realized that the potential energy surface of a triatomic, linear molecule splits into two as soon as the molecule is bent. The phenomenon, later dubbed the Renner-Teller effect due to the detailed follow-up work of Renner on the subject, describes the coupling of a symmetry-reducing molecular vibration with degenerate electronic states. In this article, we show that a very similar type of nonadiabatic coupling can occur for certain translational degrees of freedom of diatomic, electronically degenerate molecules when trapped in a nearly spherical or cylindrical quantum confinement, e.g., realized through electromagnetic fields or molecular encapsulation. We illustrate this on the example of fullerene-encapsulated nitric oxide, and provide a prediction of its interesting, perturbed vibronic spectrum.

Leak-out spectroscopy as alternative method to rare-gas tagging for the Renner-Teller perturbed HCCH<sup>+</sup> and DCCD<sup>+</sup> ions.

Project description:Infrared messenger-tagging predissociation action spectroscopy (IRPD) is a well-established technique to record vibrational spectra of reactive molecular ions. One of its major drawbacks is that the spectrum of the messenger-ion complex is taken instead of that of the bare ion. In particular for small open-shell species, such as the Renner-Teller (RT) affected HCCH+ and DCCD+, the attachment of the tag may have a significant impact on the spectral features. Here we present the application of the novel leak-out spectroscopy (LOS) as a tag-free method to record the cis-bending of the HCCH+ (∼700 cm-1) and DCCD+ cations (∼520 cm-1), using a cryogenic ion trap end user station at the FELIX laboratory. We demonstrate that the obtained LOS spectrum is equivalent to a previously recorded laser-induced reactions (LIR) spectrum of HCCH+. The bending modes are the energetically lowest-lying vibrational modes targeted with LOS so far, showing its potential as a universal broadband spectroscopic technique. Furthermore, we have investigated the effect of the rare gas attachment by recording the vibrational spectra of Ne- and Ar-tagged HCCH+. We found that the Ne-attachment led to a shift in band positions and change in relative intensities, while the Ar-attachment even led to a complete quenching of the RT splitting, showing the importance of using a tag-free method for RT affected systems. The results are interpreted with the help of high-level ab initio calculations in combination with an effective Hamiltonian approach.

Spin-orbit entanglement driven by the Jahn-Teller effect.

Project description:Spin-orbit entanglement in 4d and 5d transition metal systems can enhance electronic correlations, leading to nontrivial ground states and the emergence of exotic excitations. There is also an interest to investigate spin-orbit entanglement in 3d compounds, though this is challenging due to their smaller spin-orbit coupling. Here we demonstrate that the Jahn-Teller effect in Mn3+ reduces the energy gap between high- and low- spin-orbital states that lead to enhanced spin-orbit entanglement. Our results show a rare example of synergistic effects of Jahn-Teller and spin-orbit interactions and provide a way to entangle different degrees of freedom in d-metal oxides, which may allow paths to explore the interplay of orbital, lattice and spins in 3d correlated systems.

An orbital strategy for regulating the Jahn-Teller effect.

Project description:The Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) arising from lattice-electron coupling is a fascinating phenomenon that profoundly affects important physical properties in a number of transition-metal compounds. Controlling JT distortions and their corresponding electronic structures is highly desirable to tailor the functionalities of materials. Here, we propose a local coordinate strategy to regulate the JTE through quantifying occupancy in the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] orbitals of Mn and scrutinizing the symmetries of the ligand oxygen atoms in MnO6 octahedra in LiMn2O4 and Li0.5Mn2O4. The effectiveness of such a strategy has been demonstrated by constructing P2-type NaLi x Mn1 - x O2 oxides with different Li/Mn ordering schemes. In addition, this strategy is also tenable for most 3d transition-metal compounds in spinel and perovskite frameworks, indicating the universality of local coordinate strategy and the tunability of the lattice-orbital coupling in transition-metal oxides. This work demonstrates a useful strategy to regulate JT distortion and provides useful guidelines for future design of functional materials with specific physical properties.

Nuclear quantum effect with pure anharmonicity and the anomalous thermal expansion of silicon.

Project description:Despite the widespread use of silicon in modern technology, its peculiar thermal expansion is not well understood. Adapting harmonic phonons to the specific volume at temperature, the quasiharmonic approximation, has become accepted for simulating the thermal expansion, but has given ambiguous interpretations for microscopic mechanisms. To test atomistic mechanisms, we performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments from 100 K to 1,500 K on a single crystal of silicon to measure the changes in phonon frequencies. Our state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, which fully account for phonon anharmonicity and nuclear quantum effects, reproduced the measured shifts of individual phonons with temperature, whereas quasiharmonic shifts were mostly of the wrong sign. Surprisingly, the accepted quasiharmonic model was found to predict the thermal expansion owing to a large cancellation of contributions from individual phonons.

Dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime.

Project description:Exotic quantum phases, arising from a complex interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, are of immense interest to a wide research community. A well-known example of such an entangled behavior is the Jahn-Teller effect, where the lifting of orbital degeneracy proceeds through lattice distortions. Here we demonstrate that a highly-symmetrical 5d1 double perovskite Ba2MgReO6, comprising a 3D array of isolated ReO6 octahedra, represents a rare example of a dynamic Jahn-Teller system in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime. Thermodynamic and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, supported by quantum chemistry calculations, undoubtedly show that the Jahn-Teller instability leads to a ground-state doublet, resolving a long-standing puzzle in this family of compounds. The dynamic state of ReO6 octahedra persists down to the lowest temperatures, where a multipolar order sets in, allowing for investigations of the interplay between a dynamic JT effect and strongly correlated electron behavior.

Geometry, Electronic Structure, and Pseudo Jahn-Teller Effect in Tetrasilacyclobutadiene Analogues.

Project description:We revealed the origin of the structural features of a series of tetrasilacyclobutadiene analogues based on a detailed study of their electronic structure and the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE). Starting with the D4h symmetry of the Si4R4 system with a square four-membered silicon ring as a reference geometry, and employing ab initio calculations of energy profiles along lower-symmetry nuclear displacements in the ground and several excited states, we show that the ground-state boat-like and chair-like equilibrium configurations are produced by the PJT interaction with appropriate excited sates. For Si4F4 a full two-mode b1g-b2g adiabatic potential energy surface is calculated showing explicitly the way of transformation from the unstable D4h geometry to the two equilibrium C2h configurations via the D2h saddle point. The PJTE origin of these structural features is confirmed also by estimates of the vibronic coupling parameters. For Si4R4 with large substituents the origin of their structure is revealed by analyzing the PJT interaction between the frontier molecular orbitals. The preferred chair-like structures of Si4R4 analogues with amido substituents, and heavier germanium-containing systems Ge4R4 (potential precursors for semiconducting materials) are predicted.

Inherent Anharmonicity of Harmonic Solids.

Project description:Atomic vibrations, in the form of phonons, are foundational in describing the thermal behavior of materials. The possible frequencies of phonons in materials are governed by the complex bonding between atoms, which is physically represented by a spring-mass model that can account for interactions (spring forces) between the atoms (masses). The lowest-order, harmonic, approximation only considers linear forces between atoms and is thought incapable of explaining phenomena like thermal expansion and thermal conductivity, which are attributed to nonlinear, anharmonic, interactions. Here, we show that the kinetic energy of atoms in a solid produces a pressure much like the kinetic energy of atoms in a gas does. This vibrational or phonon pressure naturally increases with temperature, as it does in a gas and therefore results in a thermal expansion. Because thermal expansion thermodynamically defines a Grüneisen parameter γ, which is a typical metric of anharmonicity, we show that even a harmonic solid will necessarily have some anharmonicity. A consequence of this phonon pressure model is a harmonic estimation of the Grüneisen parameter as γ≈3/23-4x2/1+2x2, where x=vt/vl is the ratio of the transverse and longitudinal speeds of sound. We demonstrate the immediate utility of this model by developing a high-throughput harmonic estimate of lattice thermal conductivity that is comparable to other state-of-the-art estimations. By linking harmonic and anharmonic properties explicitly, this study provokes new ideas about the fundamental nature of anharmonicity, while also providing a basis for new material engineering design metrics.

How Does Pseudo-Jahn-Teller Effect Induce the Photoprotective Potential of Curcumin?

Project description:In this paper, the molecular and electronic structure of curcumin is studied. High-symmetric gas-phase tautomers and their deprotonated forms in various symmetry groups are identified. The stability of lower-symmetry structures was explained by using the Pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) effect. This effect leads to stable structures of different symmetries for the neutral enol and keto forms. The presented analysis demonstrated the potential significance of the PJT effect, which may modulate the setting of electronic and vibrational (vibronic) energy levels upon photodynamic processes. The PJT effect may rationalize the photoprotection action and activity of naturally occurring symmetric dyes.
