Host cell membranes pose a particular challenge for non-enveloped viruses. Whereas enveloped viruses enter cells by fusing their lipid envelopes with the cellular membrane, non-enveloped viruses generally must (1) enter cells via endocytosis, then (2) penetrate the cellular endomembrane to reach the cytosol.
