Metallic On-Chip Light Concentrators Fabricated by In Situ Plasmonic Etching Technique.

ABSTRACT: One-dimensional tapered metallic nanostructures are highly interesting for nanophotonic applications because of their plasmonic waveguiding and field-focusing properties. Here, we developed an in situ etching technique for unique tapered crystallized silver nanowire fabrication. Under the focused laser spot, plasmon-induced charge separation of chemically synthesized nanowires is excited, which triggers the uniaxial etching of silver nanowires along the radial direction with decreasing rate, forming tapered structures several micrometers long and with diameter attenuating from hundreds to tens of nanometers. These tapered metallic nanowires have smooth surfaces showing excellent performance for plasmonic waveguiding, and can be good candidates for nanocircuits and remote-excitation sources.

Broadband Metallic Fiber-to-Chip Couplers and a Low-Complexity Integrated Plasmonic Platform.

Project description:We present a plasmonic platform featuring efficient, broadband metallic fiber-to-chip couplers that directly interface plasmonic slot waveguides, such as compact and high-speed electro-optic modulators. The metallic gratings exhibit an experimental fiber-to-slot coupling efficiency of -2.7 dB with -1.4 dB in simulations with the same coupling principle. Further, they offer a huge spectral window with a 3 dB passband of 350 nm. The technology relies on a vertically arranged layer stack, metal-insulator-metal waveguides, and fiber-to-slot couplers and is formed in only one lithography step with a minimum feature size of 250 nm. As an application example, we fabricate new modulator devices with an electro-optic organic material in the slot waveguide and reach 50 and 100 Gbit/s data modulation in the O- and C-bands within the same device. The devices' broad spectral bandwidth and their relaxed fabrication may render them suitable for experiments and applications in the scope of sensing, nonlinear optics, or telecommunications.

Quantum nanoconstrictions fabricated by cryo-etching in encapsulated graphene.

Project description:We report on a novel implementation of the cryo-etching method, which enabled us to fabricate low-roughness hBN-encapsulated graphene nanoconstrictions with unprecedented control of the structure edges; the typical edge roughness is on the order of a few nanometers. We characterized the system by atomic force microscopy and used the measured parameters of the edge geometry in numerical simulations of the system conductance, which agree quantitatively with our low temperature transport measurements. The quality of our devices is confirmed by the observation of well defined quantized 2e2/h conductance steps at zero magnetic field. To the best of our knowledge, such an observation reports the clearest conductance quantization in physically etched graphene nanoconstrictions. The fabrication of such high quality systems and the scalability of the cryo-etching method opens a novel promising possibility of producing more complex truly-ballistic devices based on graphene.

Unified theory of surface-plasmonic enhancement and extinction of light transmission through metallic nanoslit arrays.

Project description:Metallic nanostructures are of immense scientific interest owing to unexpectedly strong interaction with light in deep subwavelength scales. Resonant excitations of surface and cavity plasmonic modes mediate strong light localization in nanoscale objects. Nevertheless, the role of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPP) in light transmission through a simple one-dimensional system with metallic nanoslits has been the subject of longstanding debates. Here, we propose a unified theory that consistently explains the controversial effects of SPPs in metallic nanoslit arrays. We show that the SPPs excited on the entrance and exit interfaces induce near-total internal reflection and abrupt phase change of the slit-guided mode. These fundamental effects quantitatively describe positive and negative effects of SPP excitation in a self-consistent manner. Importantly, the theory shows excellent agreement with rigorous numerical calculations while providing profound physical insight into the properties of nanoplasmonic systems.

Electromagnetically induced transparency of a plasmonic metamaterial light absorber based on multilayered metallic nanoparticle sheets.

Project description:In this study, we observed the peak splitting of absorption spectra for two-dimensional sheets of silver nanoparticles due to the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. This unique optical phenomenon was observed for the multilayered nanosheets up to 20 layers on a metal substrate, while this phenomenon was not observed on a transparent substrate. The wavelength and intensities of the split peaks depend on the number of layers, and the experimental results were well reproduced by the calculation of the Transfer-Matrix method by employing the effective medium approximation. The Ag nanosheets used in this study can act as a plasmonic metamaterial light absorber, which has a such large oscillator strength. This phenomenon is a fundamental optical property of a thin film on a metal substrate but has never been observed because native materials do not have a large oscillator strength. This new type of EIT effect using a plasmonic metamaterial light absorber presents the potential for the development of future optic and photonic technologies.

Extreme wettability of nanostructured glass fabricated by non-lithographic, anisotropic etching.

Project description:Functional glass surfaces with the properties of superhydrophobicity/or superhydrohydrophilicity, anti-condensation or low reflectance require nano- or micro-scale roughness, which is difficult to fabricate directly on glass surfaces. Here, we report a novel non-lithographic method for the fabrication of nanostructures on glass; this method introduces a sacrificial SiO2 layer for anisotropic plasma etching. The first step was to form nanopillars on SiO2 layer-coated glass by using preferential CF4 plasma etching. With continuous plasma etching, the SiO2 pillars become etch-resistant masks on the glass; thus, the glass regions covered by the SiO2 pillars are etched slowly, and the regions with no SiO2 pillars are etched rapidly, resulting in nanopatterned glass. The glass surface that is etched with CF4 plasma becomes superhydrophilic because of its high surface energy, as well as its nano-scale roughness and high aspect ratio. Upon applying a subsequent hydrophobic coating to the nanostructured glass, a superhydrophobic surface was achieved. The light transmission of the glass was relatively unaffected by the nanostructures, whereas the reflectance was significantly reduced by the increase in nanopattern roughness on the glass.

In situ high throughput scattering light analysis of single plasmonic nanoparticles in living cells.

Project description:Plasmonic nanoparticles have been widely applied in cell imaging, disease diagnosis, and photothermal therapy owing to their unique scattering and absorption spectra based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property. Recently, it is still a big challenge to study the detailed scattering properties of single plasmonic nanoparticles in living cells and tissues, which have dynamic and complicated environment. The conventional approach for measuring the scattering light is based on a spectrograph coupled to dark-field microscopy (DFM), which is time-consuming and limited by the small sample capacity. Alternatively, RGB-based method is promising in high-throughput analysis of single plasmonic nanoparticles in dark-field images, but the limitation in recognition of nanoparticles hinders its application for intracellular analysis. In this paper, we developed an automatic and robust method for recognizing the plasmonic nanoparticles in dark-field image for RGB-based analysis. The method involves a bias-modified fuzzy C-means algorithm, through which biased illumination in the image could be eliminated. Thus, nearly all of the gold nanoparticles in the recorded image were recognized both on glass slide and in living cells. As confirmed, the distribution of peak wavelength obtained by our method is well agreed to the result measured by conventional method. Furthermore, we demonstrated that our method is profound in cell imaging studies, where its advantages in fast and high-throughput analysis of the plasmonic nanoparticles could be applied to confirm the presence and location of important biological molecules and provide efficiency information for cancer drug selection.

A Miniature Fibre-Optic Raman Probe Fabricated by Ultrafast Laser-Assisted Etching.

Project description:Optical biopsy describes a range of medical procedures in which light is used to investigate disease in the body, often in hard-to-reach regions via optical fibres. Optical biopsies can reveal a multitude of diagnostic information to aid therapeutic diagnosis and treatment with higher specificity and shorter delay than traditional surgical techniques. One specific type of optical biopsy relies on Raman spectroscopy to differentiate tissue types at the molecular level and has been used successfully to stage cancer. However, complex micro-optical systems are usually needed at the distal end to optimise the signal-to-noise properties of the Raman signal collected. Manufacturing these devices, particularly in a way suitable for large scale adoption, remains a critical challenge. In this paper, we describe a novel fibre-fed micro-optic system designed for efficient signal delivery and collection during a Raman spectroscopy-based optical biopsy. Crucially, we fabricate the device using a direct-laser-writing technique known as ultrafast laser-assisted etching which is scalable and allows components to be aligned passively. The Raman probe has a sub-millimetre diameter and offers confocal signal collection with 71.3% ± 1.5% collection efficiency over a 0.8 numerical aperture. Proof of concept spectral measurements were performed on mouse intestinal tissue and compared with results obtained using a commercial Raman microscope.

Tunable hard x-ray nanofocusing with Fresnel zone plates fabricated using deep etching.

Project description:Fresnel zone plates are widely used for x-ray nanofocusing, due to their ease of alignment and energy tunability. Their spatial resolution is limited in part by their outermost zone width dr N , while their efficiency is limited in part by their thickness t zp. We demonstrate the use of Fresnel zone plate optics for x-ray nanofocusing with dr N = 16 nm outermost zone width and a thickness of about t zp = 1.8 μm (or an aspect ratio of 110) with an absolute focusing efficiency of 4.7% at 12 keV, and 6.2% at 10 keV. Using partially coherent illumination at 12 keV, the zone plate delivered a FWHM focus of 46 × 60 nm at 12 keV, with the first order coherent mode in a ptychographic reconstruction showing a probe size of 16 nm FWHM. These optics were fabricated using a combination of metal assisted chemical etching and atomic layer deposition for the diffracting structures, and silicon wafer back-thinning to produce optics useful for real applications. This approach should enable new higher resolution views of thick materials, especially when energy tunability is required.

Heterogeneous optoelectronic characteristics of Si micropillar arrays fabricated by metal-assisted chemical etching.

Project description:Recent progress achieved in metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) has enabled the production of high-quality micropillar arrays for various optoelectronic applications. Si micropillars produced by MACE often show a porous Si/SiOx shell on crystalline pillar cores introduced by local electrochemical reactions. In this paper, we report the distinct optoelectronic characteristics of the porous Si/SiOx shell correlated to their chemical compositions. Local photoluminescent (PL) images obtained with an immersion oil objective lens in confocal microscopy show a red emission peak (≈ 650 nm) along the perimeter of the pillars that is threefold stronger compared to their center. On the basis of our analysis, we find an unexpected PL increase (≈ 540 nm) at the oil/shell interface. We suggest that both PL enhancements are mainly attributed to the porous structures, a similar behavior observed in previous MACE studies. Surface potential maps simultaneously recorded with topography reveal a significantly high surface potential on the sidewalls of MACE-synthesized pillars (+ 0.5 V), which is restored to the level of planar Si control (- 0.5 V) after removing SiOx in hydrofluoric acid. These distinct optoelectronic characteristics of the Si/SiOx shell can be beneficial for various sensor architectures.

A Rapidly Fabricated Microfluidic Chip for Cell Culture.

Project description:Microfluidic chips (?FC) are emerging as powerful tools in chemistry, biochemistry, nanotechnology and biotechnology. The microscale size, possibility of integration and high-throughput present huge technical potential to facilitate the research of cell behavior by creating in vivo-like microenvironments. Here, we have developed a new method for rapid fabrication of ?FC with Norland Optical Adhesive 81 (NOA81) for multiple cell culture with high efficiency. The proposed method is more suitable for the early structure exploration stage of ?FC than existing procedures since no templates are needed and fast fabrication methods are presented. Simple PDMS-NOA81-linked microvalves were embedded in the ?FC to control or block the fluid flow effectively, which significantly broadened the applications of ?FC. Various types of cells were integrated into the chip and normal viabilities were maintained up to 1 week. Besides, concentration gradient was generated to investigate the cells in the ?FC responded to drug stimulation. The cells appeared different in terms of shape and proliferation that strongly demonstrated the potential application of our ?FC in online drug delivery. The high biocompatibility of NOA81 and its facile fabrication (?FC) promise its use in various cell analyses, such as cell-cell interactions or tissue engineering.
