New estimators for estimating population total: an application to water demand in Thailand under unequal probability sampling without replacement for missing data.

ABSTRACT: Water shortage could play an imperative role in the future due to an influx of water demand when compared to water supplies. Inadequate water could damage human life and other aspects related to living. This serious issue can be prevented by estimating the demand for water to bridge the small gap between demand and supplies for water. Some water consumption data recorded daily may be missing and could affect the estimated value of water demand. In this article, new ratio estimators for estimating population total are proposed under unequal probability sampling without replacement when data are missing. Two situations are considered: known or unknown mean of an auxiliary variable and missing data are missing at random for both study and auxiliary variables. The variance and associated estimators of the proposed estimators are investigated under a reverse framework. The proposed estimators are applied to data from simulation studies and empirical data on water demand in Thailand which contain some missing values, to assess the efficacies of the estimators.

Project description:BackgroundIn the last decade, the number of total knee replacements performed annually in the United States has doubled, with disproportionate increases among younger adults. While total knee replacement is a highly effective treatment for end-stage knee osteoarthritis, total knee replacement recipients can experience persistent pain and severe complications. We are aware of no current estimates of the prevalence of total knee replacement among adults in the U.S.MethodsWe used the Osteoarthritis Policy Model, a validated computer simulation model of knee osteoarthritis, and data on annual total knee replacement utilization to estimate the prevalence of primary and revision total knee replacement among adults fifty years of age or older in the U.S. We combined these prevalence estimates with U.S. Census data to estimate the number of adults in the U.S. currently living with total knee replacement. The annual incidence of total knee replacement was derived from two longitudinal knee osteoarthritis cohorts and ranged from 1.6% to 11.9% in males and from 2.0% to 10.9% in females.ResultsWe estimated that 4.0 million (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.6 million to 4.4 million) adults in the U.S. currently live with a total knee replacement, representing 4.2% (95% CI: 3.7% to 4.6%) of the population fifty years of age or older. The prevalence was higher among females (4.8%) than among males (3.4%) and increased with age. The lifetime risk of primary total knee replacement from the age of twenty-five years was 7.0% (95% CI: 6.1% to 7.8%) for males and 9.5% (95% CI: 8.5% to 10.5%) for females. Over half of adults in the U.S. diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis will undergo a total knee replacement.ConclusionsAmong older adults in the U.S., total knee replacement is considerably more prevalent than rheumatoid arthritis and nearly as prevalent as congestive heart failure. Nearly 1.5 million of those with a primary total knee replacement are fifty to sixty-nine years old, indicating that a large population is at risk for costly revision surgery as well as possible long-term complications of total knee replacement.

Project description:Understanding the functional relationship between the sample size and the performance of species richness estimators is necessary to optimize limited sampling resources against estimation error. Nonparametric estimators such as Chao and Jackknife demonstrate strong performances, but consensus is lacking as to which estimator performs better under constrained sampling. We explore a method to improve the estimators under such scenario. The method we propose involves randomly splitting species-abundance data from a single sample into two equally sized samples, and using an appropriate incidence-based estimator to estimate richness. To test this method, we assume a lognormal species-abundance distribution (SAD) with varying coefficients of variation (CV), generate samples using MCMC simulations, and use the expected mean-squared error as the performance criterion of the estimators. We test this method for Chao, Jackknife, ICE, and ACE estimators. Between abundance-based estimators with the single sample, and incidence-based estimators with the split-in-two samples, Chao2 performed the best when CV < 0.65, and incidence-based Jackknife performed the best when CV > 0.65, given that the ratio of sample size to observed species richness is greater than a critical value given by a power function of CV with respect to abundance of the sampled population. The proposed method increases the performance of the estimators substantially and is more effective when more rare species are in an assemblage. We also show that the splitting method works qualitatively similarly well when the SADs are log series, geometric series, and negative binomial. We demonstrate an application of the proposed method by estimating richness of zooplankton communities in samples of ballast water. The proposed splitting method is an alternative to sampling a large number of individuals to increase the accuracy of richness estimations; therefore, it is appropriate for a wide range of resource-limited sampling scenarios in ecology.

Project description:Commonly used semiparametric estimators of causal effects specify parametric models for the propensity score (PS) and the conditional outcome. An example is an augmented inverse probability weighting (IPW) estimator, frequently referred to as a doubly robust estimator, because it is consistent if at least one of the two models is correctly specified. However, in many observational studies, the role of the parametric models is often not to provide a representation of the data-generating process but rather to facilitate the adjustment for confounding, making the assumption of at least one true model unlikely to hold. In this paper, we propose a crude analytical approach to study the large-sample bias of estimators when the models are assumed to be approximations of the data-generating process, namely, when all models are misspecified. We apply our approach to three prototypical estimators of the average causal effect, two IPW estimators, using a misspecified PS model, and an augmented IPW (AIPW) estimator, using misspecified models for the outcome regression (OR) and the PS. For the two IPW estimators, we show that normalization, in addition to having a smaller variance, also offers some protection against bias due to model misspecification. To analyze the question of when the use of two misspecified models is better than one we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for when the AIPW estimator has a smaller bias than a simple IPW estimator and when it has a smaller bias than an IPW estimator with normalized weights. If the misspecification of the outcome model is moderate, the comparisons of the biases of the IPW and AIPW estimators show that the AIPW estimator has a smaller bias than the IPW estimators. However, all biases include a scaling with the PS-model error and we suggest caution in modeling the PS whenever such a model is involved. For numerical and finite sample illustrations, we include three simulation studies and corresponding approximations of the large-sample biases. In a dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we estimate the effect of smoking on blood lead levels.

Project description:BackgroundColocalization is a statistical method used in genetics to determine whether the same variant is causal for multiple phenotypes, for example, complex traits and gene expression. It provides stronger mechanistic evidence than shared significance, which can be produced through separate causal variants in linkage disequilibrium. Current colocalization methods require full summary statistics for both traits, limiting their use with the majority of reported GWAS associations (e.g. GWAS Catalog). We propose a new approximation to the popular coloc method that can be applied when limited summary statistics are available. Our method (POint EstiMation of Colocalization, POEMColoc) imputes missing summary statistics for one or both traits using LD structure in a reference panel, and performs colocalization using the imputed summary statistics.ResultsWe evaluate the performance of POEMColoc using real (UK Biobank phenotypes and GTEx eQTL) and simulated datasets. We show good correlation between posterior probabilities of colocalization computed from imputed and observed datasets and similar accuracy in simulation. We evaluate scenarios that might reduce performance and show that multiple independent causal variants in a region and imputation from a limited subset of typed variants have a larger effect while mismatched ancestry in the reference panel has a modest effect. Further, we find that POEMColoc is a better approximation of coloc when the imputed association statistics are from a well powered study (e.g., relatively larger sample size or effect size). Applying POEMColoc to estimate colocalization of GWAS Catalog entries and GTEx eQTL, we find evidence for colocalization of 150,000 trait-gene-tissue triplets.ConclusionsWe find that colocalization analysis performed with full summary statistics can be closely approximated when only the summary statistics of the top SNP are available for one or both traits. When applied to the full GWAS Catalog and GTEx eQTL, we find that colocalized trait-gene pairs are enriched in tissues relevant to disease etiology and for matches to approved drug mechanisms.
