Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a histologic pattern of injury defined by the presence of sclerosis in some (segmental) of certain glomeruli (focal). On electron microscopy, it is characterized by a variable degree of podocyte foot process effacement and gaps in the coverage of the glomerular basement membrane.
