Project description:Bulk Bi0.5Sr0.5Fe0.5Cr0.5O3 (BSFCO) is a new compound comprising the R3c structure. The structural, magnetic property and exchange bias (EB) details are investigated. The material was in the super-paramagnetic (SP) state at room temperature. Exchange bias usually occurs at the boundary between different magnetic states after field cooling (HFC) acts on the sample. Here the result shows that changing HFC from 1 to 6 T reduces the HEB value by 16% at 2 K at the same time. Meanwhile, HEB diminishes as the ferromagnetic layer thickness increases. The variation of (the thickness of ferromagnetic layer) tFM with the change of HFC leads to the tuning of HEB by HFC in BSFCO bulk. These effects are obviously different from the phenomenon seen in other oxide types.

Project description:We study the change in magnetisation with paramagnetic Al addition in the CoFeNi0.5Cr0.5-Alx (x: 0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5) complex concentrated alloy. The compositions were developed utilising the Mulliken electronegativity and d-electron/atom ratio. Spherical FeCr rich nanoprecipitates are observed for X: 1.0 and 1.5 in an AlCoNi-rich matrix. A ~ 5 × increase in magnetisation (from 22 to 96 Am2/kg) coincides with this nanoprecipitate formation-the main magnetic contribution is determined to be from FeCr nanoprecipitates. The magnetisation increase is strange as paramagnetic Al addition dilutes the ferromagnetic Fe/Co/Ni additions. In this paper we discuss the magnetic and structural characterisation of the CoFeNi0.5Cr0.5-Alx composition and attempt to relate it to the interfacial energy.

Project description:Synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures through combustion routes is a promising technique owing to its simplicity, rapidity, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, a sunlight-driven combustion approach is developed to synthesize pristine metal oxides and their heterostructures. Sunlight, a sustainable energy source, is used not only to initiate the combustion reaction but also to create oxygen vacancies on the metal oxide surface. ZnO nanostructures are successfully synthesized using this novel approach, and the products exhibit higher photocatalytic activity in the decomposition of methyl orange (MO) than ZnO nanostructures synthesized by the conventional methods. The higher photocatalytic activity is due to the narrower band gap, higher porosity, smaller and more uniform particle size, surface oxygen vacancies, as well as the enhanced exciton dissociation efficiency induced by the sunlight. Porous Fe3O4 nanostructures are also prepared using this environmentally benign method. Surprisingly, few-layer Bi2O3 nanosheets are successfully obtained using the sunlight-driven combustion approach. Moreover, the approach developed here is used to synthesize Bi2O3/ZnO heterostructure exhibiting a structure of few-layer Bi2O3 nanosheets decorated with ZnO nanoparticles. Bi2O3 nanosheets and Bi2O3/ZnO heterostructures synthesized by sunlight-driven combustion route exhibit higher photocatalytic activity than their counterparts synthesized by the conventional solution combustion method. This work illuminates a potential cost-effective method to synthesize defective metal oxide nanostructures at scale.

Project description:The use of nanostructured interfaces and advanced functional materials opens up a new playground in the field of solid oxide fuel cells. In this work, we present two all-ceramic thin-film heterostructures based on samarium-doped ceria and lanthanum strontium chromite manganite as promising functional layers for electrode application. The films were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition as bilayers or self-assembled intermixed nanocomposites. The microstructural characterization confirmed the formation of dense, well-differentiated, phases and highlighted the presence of strong cation intermixing in the case of the nanocomposite. The electrochemical properties─solid/gas reactivity and in-plane conductivity─are strongly improved for both heterostructures with respect to the single-phase constituents under anodic conditions (up to fivefold decrease of area-specific resistance and 3 orders of magnitude increase of in-plane conductivity with respect to reference single-phase materials). A remarkable electrochemical activity was also observed for the nanocomposite under an oxidizing atmosphere, with no significant decrease in performance after 400 h of thermal aging. This work shows how the implementation of nanostructuring strategies not only can be used to tune the properties of functional films but also results in a synergistic enhancement of the electrochemical performance, surpassing the parent materials and opening the field for the fabrication of high-performance nanostructured functional layers for application in solid oxide fuel cells and symmetric systems.

Project description:In this study, Fe-doped copper sulfide nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated for the solar-assisted reduction of CrVI ions in raw water. The Fe-doped NPs were synthesized by decomposing copper(ii) N,N-diphenylmethylpiperazinecarbamodithioate via a facile single-step, one-pot solvothermal method in the presence of iron salt. The CrVI photoreduction data were fit to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and a Langmuir model. The CuS/Cu2S NP reduction ability for CrVI increases with an increase in dopant percentage. The best catalyst (9% Fe-doped) was able to reduce CrVI (10-4 M K2Cr2O7) to CrIII in raw water using an initial amount of 10 mg in 6 min with a reduction efficiency of up to 100%. The photocatalytic activity was examined while varying five different parameters: sunlight, diffused light, change in pH, and changes in the concentration of the catalyst and the temperature. This new approach presents an active, simple, and cost-effective means for wastewater treatment.

Project description:Alternative UO2 nuclear fuels, incorporating Cr as a dopant, are currently in use in light-water reactors. Dissolution experiments using Cr-doped UO2, performed as a function of Cr content in a simplified groundwater solution and under oxic conditions, established that the addition of Cr to the UO2 matrix systematically reduced the normalised dissolution rate of U at 25 and 40 °C. This effect was most notable under dilute solution conditions, and is the result of galvanic coupling between Cr and U, resulting from the presence of Cr2+ in the UO2 matrix, as corroborated by activation energy determination. Under conditions of solution saturation, where schoepite ((UO2)8O2(OH)12·(H2O)12) and Na2U2O7·6H2O were identified as secondary phases, the rate of U dissolution was invariant with Cr content. Moreover, at 60 °C, the trend was reversed and the rate of U dissolution increased with increasing Cr content. Under these conditions, other factors, including U solubility or bicarbonate-surface interactions, exert a stronger influence on the U dissolution kinetics than Cr. Increased grain size, a feature of Cr-doped UO2 fuel, was also found to reduce the normalised dissolution rate of U. In establishing the mechanisms by which Cr dopants influence UO2 fuel dissolution, it can be concluded that, overall, Cr-doped UO2 nuclear fuel possesses similar dissolution kinetics to undoped UO2 fuel, giving confidence for its eventual disposal in a geological facility.

Project description:As a promising candidate material replacing Pb(ZrTi)O3 (PZT), the lead-free Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT) system exhibits outstanding piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. However, the weak thermal stability of these electric properties hampers its practical applications. In this work, we designed and prepared novel Nb-doped 0.76Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.24Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 (BNT-BKT) ceramics with superior temperature stability of electric properties. Both strain as well as discharging properties of 5% Nb-doped BNT-BKT ceramics varied less than 3% and 12.5% respectively from room temperature to 160 °C, ascribed to the enlarged gap between the depolarized temperature (T d or T F-R) and the maximum dielectric temperature (T m). In addition, we investigated the impacts of Nb doping on the phase transition, dielectric, piezoelectric and ferroelectric behaviors of BNT-BKT ceramics in detail. Temperature dependent dielectric spectrums indicated that T d decreased below room temperature with Nb modifying, revealing that the phase structure transformed from ferroelectric into ergodic relaxor. Accordingly, the maximum strain value of 0.21% and recoverable energy storage of 1.2 J cm-3 were simultaneously acquired at the critical composition of 5% Nb incorporation. Our results provide an effective means of obtaining BNT-based ceramics with simultaneously thermally stable strain and discharge properties for wide temperature actuator and capacitor applications.

Project description:Effectively reducing the concentration of nitrogen-containing compounds (NCCs) remains a significant but challenging task in environmental restoration. In this work, a novel step-scheme (S-scheme) SnO2@MCr heterojunction was successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method. At this heterojunction, MIL-101(Cr) octahedrons are decorated with highly dispersed SnO2 quantum dots (QDs, approximate size 3 nm). The QDs are evenly wrapped around the MIL-101(Cr), forming an intriguing zero-dimensional/three-dimensional (0D/3D) S-scheme heterostructure. Under simulated sunlight irradiation (280 nm < λ < 980 nm), SnO2@MCr demonstrated superior photoactivity toward the denitrification of pyridine, a typical NCC. The adsorption capacity and adsorption site of SnO2@MCr were also investigated. Tests using 20%SnO2@MCr exhibited much higher activity than that of pure SnO2 and MIL-101(Cr); the reduction ratio of Cr(VI) is rapidly increased to 95% after sunlight irradiation for 4 h. The improvement in the photocatalytic activity is attributed to (i) the high dispersion of SnO2 QDs, (ii) the binding of the rich adsorption sites with pyridine molecules, and (iii) the formation of the S-scheme heterojunction between SnO2 and MIL-101(Cr). Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism of pyridine was elucidated, and the possible intermediate products and degradation pathways were discussed.

Project description:Exploiting excellent photocatalytic activity and stable heterostructure composites are of critical importance for environmental sustainability. The spherical Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 n-p heterojunction is first prepared via an in situ hydrothermal method using Bi2WO6, Na2MoO4·2H2O, and CH4N2S, in which the intermediate phase Bi2S3 is formed due to chemical coupling interaction of Bi2WO6 and CH4N2S. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that the compactness of the sample can be easily adjusted by changing the contents of S and Mo sources in the solution. The results of ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra, photoluminescence, transient photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectra indicate that the formation of heterojunctions contributes to enhancing visible-light utilization and promoting photogenerated carrier separation and transfer. The composite material is used as a catalyst for the visible light photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Remarkably, the optimal Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 n-p heterojunction achieves the greatest Cr(VI) reduction rate of 100% within 75 min (λ > 420 nm, pH = 2); this rate is considerably better than the Cr(VI) reduction rate of pure Bi2WO6. The recycling experiment also reveals that the photocatalytic performance of the n-p heterojunction toward Cr(VI) is still maintained at 80% after three cycles, indicating that the n-p heterojunction has excellent structural stability. The capture experiment proves that the main active species in the system are electrons. The reasonable mechanism of Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 photocatalytic reduction Cr(VI) is proposed. Our work provides new research ideas for the design of ternary heterojunction composites and new strategies for the development of photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Project description:Photocatalysis is an important technique for synthetic transformations. However, little attention has been paid to light-driven synergistic redox reactions for directed synthesis. Herein, the authors report tunable oxidation of benzyl to phenylcarbinol with the modest yield (47%) in 5 h via singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) over the photocatalyst Zn0.5 Cd0.5 S (ZCS)/graphene oxide (GO) under exceptionally mild conditions. Theoretical calculations indicate that the presence of S vacancies on the surface of ZCS/GO photocatalyst is crucial for the adsorption and activation of O2 , successively generating the superoxide radical (• O2 - ) and 1 O2 , attributing to the regulation of local electron density on the surface of ZCS/GO and photogenerated holes (h+ ). Meanwhile, accelerated transfer of photogenerated electrons (e- ) to GO caused by the π-π stacking effect is conducive to the subsequent aldehyde hydrogenation to benzyl alcohol rather than non-selective oxidation of aldehyde to carboxylic acid. Anisotropic charge transport driven by the built-in electric field can further promote the separation of e- and h+ for multistep reactions. Promisingly, one-pot photocatalytic conversion of p-xylene to 4-methylbenzyl alcohol is beneficial for reducing the harmful effects of aromatics on human health. Furthermore, this study provides novel insights into the design of photocatalysts for cascade reactions.
