Project description:Sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4.10H2O, SSD), a low-cost phase change material (PCM), can store thermal energy. However, phase separation and unstable energy storage capacity (ESC) limit its use. To address these concerns, eight polymer additives-sodium polyacrylate (SPA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Fumed silica (SiO2), potassium polyacrylate (PPA), cellulose nanofiber (CNF), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)-were used to explore several stabilization mechanisms. The ESC of PCMs deteriorated when thickeners, SPA, PPA, and CNF, were added. DSS-modified PCMs exhibited greater stability up to 150 cycles. Rheology measurements indicated that DSS did not impact SSD viscosity significantly during stabilization. Dynamic light scattering showed that DSS reduces SSD particle size and electrostatically suspends salt particles in a stable homogeneous solution, avoiding phase separation. This study proposes a promising method to improve the thermal stability of salt hydrate PCMs by utilizing polyelectrolyte-salt hydrate mixture for thermal energy storage applications.

Project description:Salt hydrate phase change materials are important in advancing thermal energy storage technologies for the development of renewable energies. At present, their widespread use is limited by undesired undercooling and phase separation, as well as their tendency to corrode container materials. Herein, we report a direct ink writing (DIW) additive manufacturing technique to print noncorrosive salt hydrate composites with thoroughly integrated nucleating agents and thermally conductive additives. First, salt hydrate particles are prepared from nonaqueous Pickering emulsions and then employed as rheological modifiers to formulate thixotropic inks with polymer dispersions in toluene serving as the matrix. These inks are successfully printed at room temperature and cured by solvent evaporation under ambient conditions. The resulting printed and cured composites, containing up to 70 wt % of the salt hydrate, exhibit reliable thermal cyclability for 10 cycles and suppressed undercooling compared to the bulk salt hydrate. Remarkably, the composites consistently maintain their structural integrity and thermal performance throughout the entirety of both the melting and solidification processes. We demonstrate the versatility of this approach by utilizing two salt hydrates, magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (MNH, Tm = 89 °C) and zinc nitrate hexahydrate (ZNH, Tm = 36 °C), to achieve desired thermal characteristics across a wide range of temperatures. Further, we establish that the incorporation of carbon black in these inks enhances the thermal conductivity by at least 33%. This approach consolidates the strengths of additive manufacturing and salt hydrate phase change materials to harness customizable thermal properties, well suited for targeted thermal energy management applications.

Project description:Thermal energy storage offers enormous potential for a wide range of energy technologies. Phase-change materials offer state-of-the-art thermal storage due to high latent heat. However, spontaneous heat loss from thermally charged phase-change materials to cooler surroundings occurs due to the absence of a significant energy barrier for the liquid-solid transition. This prevents control over the thermal storage, and developing effective methods to address this problem has remained an elusive goal. Herein, we report a combination of photo-switching dopants and organic phase-change materials as a way to introduce an activation energy barrier for phase-change materials solidification and to conserve thermal energy in the materials, allowing them to be triggered optically to release their stored latent heat. This approach enables the retention of thermal energy (about 200 J g-1) in the materials for at least 10 h at temperatures lower than the original crystallization point, unlocking opportunities for portable thermal energy storage systems.

Project description:Materials that change phase (e.g., via melting) can store thermal energy with energy densities comparable to batteries. Phase change materials will play an increasing role in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, by scavenging thermal energy for later use. Therefore, it is useful to have summaries of phase change properties over a wide range of materials. In the present work, we review the relationship between molecular structure and trends in relevant phase change properties (melting temperature, and gravimetric enthalpy of fusion) for about 200 organic compounds from several chemical families, namely alkanes (paraffins), fatty acids, fatty alcohols, esters, diamines, dinitriles, diols, dioic acids, and diamides. We also review availability and cost, chemical compatibility, and thermal and chemical stabilities, to provide practical information for PCM selection. Compounds with even chain alkyl lengths generally give higher melting temperatures, store more thermal energy per unit mass due to more efficient packing, and are of lower cost than the comparable compounds with odd alkyl chains.

Project description:The exploitation of shape-stabilized phase change materials with high thermal conductivity and energy storage capacity is an effective strategy for improving energy efficiency. In this work, sunflower stem carbon/polyethylene glycol (SS-PEG) and sunflower receptacle carbon/polyethylene glycol (SR-PEG) shape-stabilized phase change materials, utilizing sunflower stem and receptacle biomass carbon with high specific surface area and pore volume obtained by carbonization as frameworks and polyethylene glycol as an energy storage material, were prepared by the vacuum impregnation method. The ability to load polyethylene glycol into the pore structure of carbon materials in different sunflower parts was mainly investigated, and the micro-morphology, compositional structure and thermal properties were characterized and analyzed using SEM, IR spectroscopy, XRD, DSC and TG techniques. The results showed that the carbonized sunflower stems maintained the sieve pore structure, and the carbonized sunflower receptacle was a macroporous structure containing a large number of three-dimensional interconnections. At the same time, the interaction between polyethylene glycol and each carbon material occurred through physisorption. The melting enthalpies of SS-PEG and SR-PEG shape-stabilized phase change materials were 153.4 J g-1 and 171.5 J g-1, respectively, and the loading rates reached 81.9% and 91.5%, with initial thermal decomposition temperatures (T 5%) of 344 °C and 368 °C.

Project description:With the increasing demand for thermal management, phase change materials (PCMs) have garnered widespread attention due to their unique advantages in energy storage and temperature regulation. However, traditional PCMs present challenges in modification, with commonly used physical methods facing stability and compatibility issues. This study introduces a simple and effective chemical method by synthesizing seven ester-based PCMs through chemical reactions involving lauric acid (LA) and seven different alcohols. These materials notably broaden the phase change temperature range, exhibiting melting temperature from -8.99 to 46.60 °C, expanding by 203.18% compared to raw alcohol materials. In addition, these samples exhibit excellent thermal stability and high latent heat, with a maximum latent heat value of 182.98 J g-1. In subsequent application studies, this material demonstrates outstanding energy storage characteristics and proposed an innovative thermal management method for batteries based on the PCM immersion technique, allowing the battery to maintain a temperature below 60 °C for 20.5 h, while the blank group rapidly reached 60 °C within 0.82 h and increased to 75 °C within 2.35 h. This approach greatly improves temperature regulation, enhances battery safety, and boosts operational efficiency, highlighting the immense potential of the material in advanced energy storage applications.

Project description:To alleviate the increasing energy crisis and achieve energy saving and consumption reduction in building materials, preparing shape-stabilized phase-change materials using bio-porous carbon materials from renewable organic waste to building envelope materials is an effective strategy. In this work, pine cone porous biomass carbon (PCC) was prepared via a chemical activation method using renewable biomaterial pine cone as a precursor and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an activator. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and octadecane (OD) were loaded into PCC using the vacuum impregnation method to prepare polyethylene glycol/pine cone porous biomass carbon (PEG/PCC) and octadecane/pine cone porous biomass carbon (OD/PCC) shape-stabilized phase-change materials. PCCs with a high specific surface area and pore volume were obtained by adjusting the calcination temperature and amount of KOH, which was shown as a caterpillar-like and block morphology. The shape-stabilized PEG/PCC and OD/PCC composites showed high phase-change enthalpies of 144.3 J/g and 162.3 J/g, and the solar-thermal energy conversion efficiencies of the PEG/PCC and OD/PCC reached 79.9% and 84.8%, respectively. The effects of the contents of PEG/PCC and OD/PCC on the temperature-controlling capability of rigid polyurethane foam composites were further investigated. The results showed that the temperature-regulating and temperature-controlling capabilities of the energy-storing rigid polyurethane foam composites were gradually enhanced with an increase in the phase-change material content, and there was a significant thermostatic plateau in energy absorption at 25 °C and energy release at 10 °C, which decreased the energy consumption.

Project description:A novel mineral-based composite phase change materials (PCMs) was prepared via vacuum impregnation method assisted with microwave-acid treatment of the graphite (G) and bentonite (B) mixture. Graphite and microwave-acid treated bentonite mixture (GBm) had more loading capacity and higher crystallinity of stearic acid (SA) in the SA/GBm composite. The SA/GBm composite showed an enhanced thermal storage capacity, latent heats for melting and freezing (84.64 and 84.14 J/g) was higher than those of SA/B sample (48.43 and 47.13 J/g, respectively). Addition of graphite was beneficial to the enhancement in thermal conductivity of the SA/GBm composite, which could reach 0.77 W/m K, 31% higher than SA/B and 196% than pure SA. Furthermore, atomic-level interfaces between SA and support surfaces were depicted, and the mechanism of enhanced thermal storage properties was in detail investigated.

Project description:This paper describes the preparation of new PEG6000-silica-MWCNTs composites as shape-stabilized phase change materials (ssPCMs) for application in latent heat storage. An innovative method was employed to obtain the new organic-inorganic hybrid materials, in which both a part of the PEG chains, used as the phase change material, and a part of the hydroxyl functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-OH), used as thermo-conductive fillers, were covalently connected by newly formed urethane bonds to the in-situ-generated silica matrix. The study's main aim was to investigate the optimal amount of PEG6000 that can be added to the fixed sol-gel reaction mixture so that no leakage of PEG occurs after repeated heating-cooling cycles. The findings show that the optimum PEG6000/NCOTEOS molar ratio was 2/1 (~91.5% PEG6000), because both the connected and free PEG chains interacted strongly with the in-situ-generated silica matrix to form a shape-stabilized material while preserving high phase-transition enthalpies (~153 J/G). Morphological and structural findings obtained by SEM, X-ray and Raman techniques indicated a distribution of the silica component in the amorphous phase (~27% for the optimum composition) located among the crystalline lamellae built by the folded chains of the PEG component. This composite maintained good chemical stability after a 450-cycle thermal test and had a good storage efficiency (~84%).

Project description:Phase change materials (PCMs) are promising in many fields related to energy utilization and thermal management. However, the low thermal conductivity and poor shape stability of PCMs restrict their direct thermal energy conversion and storage. The desired properties for PCMs are not only high thermal conductivity and excellent shape stability, but also high latent heat retention. In this study, the boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were bridged by small amounts of GO nanosheets and successfully self-assembled into BNNS/rGO (BG) aerogels by hydrothermal and freeze-drying processes. The BG aerogels with interlaced macro-/micro-pores have been proven to be ideally suited as support frameworks for encapsulating polyethylene glycol (PEG). The obtained composite PCMs exhibit high thermal conductivity (up to 1.12 W m-1 K-1), excellent shape stability (maintain at 90 °C for 10 min), and high latent heat (187.2 J g-1) with a retention of 97.3% of the pure PEG, presenting great potential applications in energy storage systems and thermal management of electronic devices.
